When I went to the official Warriors website yesterday I saw that the current Warrior of the Week (#94) is Hawkfrost. Looking at the Fan Art Gallery made me start thinking again about how much of a missed opportunity this character really was.
Granted, he got better in the OotS arc but during TNP, his involvement regarding the overall storyline of Brambleclaw's family issues was a bit too obscure for me. His first death scene was great although I wouldn't have minded for him to stay alive longer and actually evolve into an even bigger threat on his own, without being responsible for doing other cats so called favours. After he had become a Dark Forest cat, I liked that he had a bigger role despite me still not understanding why the other evil spirits were so respectful towards him, because he honestly did not even achive any of his goals except getting his sister Mothwing a promotion and stealing one life from Firestar. That, at least to me seems very little of an accomplishment compared to the other villains, though I suppose anyone looks like a second hand antagonist next to the likes of Brokenstar. Hawkfrost's final death scene came as a complete surprise to me when I read the fourth arc as a teenager because I had fully expected him to stay around a bit more, for some reason. I also wrote an AU afterwards in which he killed Brambleclaw in The Great Battle finale instead, as a sort of getting even plotline, but that's besides the point.
I am, however, very excited to see him in the upcoming Graphic Novel Winds of Change and thought that he had a rather good characterization in Mothwing's Secret.
So, what is everyone's opinion on Hawkfrost and his overall development in the series?

I think they make him out to be some devious mastermind, but he doesn't seem to work in reality as one. His plans didn't seem much good like his plans with Mudclaw making him as deputy of WindClan and expecting cats to follow him. And then his plan of him and Brambleclaw going to a Gathering and killing other leaders didn't seem well thought of. And his complete misreading of Bramblestar assuming he'd be willing to kill Firestar rather than just doing the job himself. He always struck me as somebody insecure, when he's a kit he doesn't seem crazy, but I think Tadpole's death (who he looked up to as a strong figure) could have caused later attachment to Tigerstar. This doesn't excuse his crimes, but I think this aspect of Hawkfrost could've been explored more and how much he was manipulated by Tigerstar. Always struck me as an enforcer to Tigerstar or Brokenstar and Tigerstar even congratulating Bramblestar on killing him, which kinda shows how Tigerstar might've not even had much respect for Hawkfrost.
Tbh I haven't read OOTS much besides excerpts, but I've heard his manipulation of Ivypool was cool, maybe it could've worked with him realizing he may have been conned as well. Maybe this could've resulted him attacking Tigerstar but dying or something, but he isn't presented with much nuance and moreso as this mastermind which just doesn't work well imo.

I think he could have been handled better if they hadn't jumped the gun so fast and killed him off so quickly. Not saying the whole Firestar getting attacked by him shouldn't have happened, but I think if it had been different in that in some way he was allowed to live and escaped to RiverClan, that would have made future dynamics a lot more interesting especially with RiverClan. I could totally see Leopardstar with her favoritism taking Hawkfrost for his word and not believing Firestar and Bramblestar's claims, heck Mistystar might even be driven out in a major plot twist as she believes them and Hawkfrost finds a way to get her kicked out like Stormfur. I mean seriously, "you attacked a clanmate, bye"... uh yeah Leopardstar jumped the gun way too quickly, if that had been Mistystar instead, I wouldn't be surprised if she was demoted on the spot or even driven out herself. If every leader kicked out everyone who got in a fight at least some point in their lives they wouldn't have a clan left.
Not saying all villains have to be geniuses. Hawkfrost in this scenario made some key mistakes that ended up in his downfall. I'm relatively ok with this version of Hawkfrost.
I just would love to have seen Hawkfrost not only alive during POV- where he might have played a bigger part in getting RiverClan to help attack ThunderClan during Eclipse, where we could see him and Bramblestar be rivals, not bros, and if anything keep RiverClan in the spotlight for at least a bit longer with most of ThunderClan thinking RiverClan's harboring an attempted murderer who'd try again with Leopardstar defending him.
And I'd mean sure I'd love an unrelated random pov in RiverClan but if the authors are so hung up on their bloodlines... then have a kid of Hawkfrost be a main pov in RiverClan. Just. It was right there, waiting :c but welp
But anyways, I guess all that's just gotta be an au.

Not gonna lie, I actually would have loved it if Mothwing was the evil one of the two and if Hawkfrost remained good, possibly the next deputy of Riverclan, or at least one of the cats on the journey.

Hawkfrost is lily white from living in Tigerstar's shadow. How embarrassing it must be to be a villain who in both life and death can't do anything without daddy telling him first. The one interesting thing he ever did was manipulate Ivypool, but I'm pretty sure Tigerstar told him to do that too. He ultimately ends up basically being a vaguely inspired thug.
I think that's why Ashfur's double cross on him worked out. Hawkfrost is smarter than Ashfur, but Ashfur is a lot more creative and driven. He has the motivation to try to screw everyone over more, whereas Hawkfrost is basically just an automaton with no creativity or personal will to do anything but fulfill daddy's desires.

I think Hawkfrost just wanted to kill everyone he hated. That's all I saw from his character and even though he is smart, I just found Hawkfrost really boring as he seemed to bend to Tigerstar's will and try to be a Tigerstar 2.0.

Third'ing that the "Mothwing was evil and Hawkfrost was good all along" au would have been so much more interesting than canon.
