Jaypaw was incredibly rude to Brightheart, thinking her as less because of her missing one eye. He irritated me so much when I was reading The Sight, and he still does. When Jaypaw decided to go medicine cat-train, Brightheart was incredibly crestfallen and I say she had a right to be upset. With the way Jaypaw had treated her, she would have come to the conclusion he disliked her, and she would've thought Jaypaw just changed his course because he didn't want to train with her. Then Firestar promises Brightheart Icecloud or Foxleap and obviously she doesn't get one. Personally, I wish Hollyleaf's mentor was her, not Brackenfur. Brackenfur has had too much apprentices. He'd temporarily mentored Tawnypelt, and he mentored Whitewing, too. Later on he trains Sorrelstripe as well. Brightheart's injury did help her training with Jaypaw, but Brackenfur didn't have any special skill for Hollypaw; Brightheart was just as suitable for the job as her brother was. If she could mentor Icekit or Foxkit later, why could she Hollypaw now?

I agree that it is unfair that Brightheart did not get to apprentice Icecloud or Foxleap, especially after Firestar promised one of them to her, and I also see no reason why Brackenfur was chosen over Brightheart to mentor Hollyleaf. I would say that it was because Firestar probably figured she was the best cat for the job to train Jayfeather, because she is missing an eye, and maybe he did not think she was up for training Hollyleaf, but that doesn't sound like Firestar, and he did promise Icecloud or Foxleap to her, so it could not have been that. The only thing I can think of, is that Brackenfur seems to be more patient and calm than Brightheart from what I've seen, so maybe that has something to do with it? As for Jayfeather being rude, he was a young cat, who felt like an outcast in his own clan, and Brightheart was not helping matters. Instead of training him like all the other apprentices were being trained, she was just showing him around camp, I can imagine he must have been very frustrated, and he probably felt like Brightheart was thinking of him as less because of his blindness.

As much as I agree (and Brightheart 10000% deserved an apprentice of her own), Iβd like to point out the friendship that Jayfeather and Brightheart developed as he got older. Once he became a full medicine cat, and Leafpool decided to become a warrior instead, Brightheart was a huge ally for him, especially since he struggled without his mentor (not because he didnβt know what he was doing. I think it was more because he didnβt want to do it alone). Yes, Jaypaw was incredibly rude to Brightheart - but she also treated him as inferior because he couldnβt see. They both made assumptions about each other based on their diminished eyesight instead of actually taking the chance to get to know each otherβs skills. I personally really like the friendship they developed in OOTS.

Jaypaw/feather is rude to almost every character in the Warriors series because that's just part of his personality and stems partly from his own frustrations with being completely blind (except in dreams until OotS ended). Also, like Harestar already pointed out and which Jaypaw thought in The Sight as well, it was him who actually suspected that Brightheart didn't want to train him because of it seeming hopeless due to his blindness. None of The Original Three (Hollyleaf, Lionblaze and Jayfeather) had "special" mentors except for Lionblaze getting trained by Tigerstar and Hawkfrost in the Dark Forest later on.

I remember when I first read The Sight, I took Jaypaw's side and sympathized with him more, but when I re-read it a year later, my opinion had flipped. I understand Jaypaw's feeling towards Brightheart, and why he felt that way. It was pretty obvious that Brightheart had been chosen because Jaypaw was blind. But seeing him act so rude to her still rubbed me the wrong way and really annoyed me throughout The Sight until he became a medicine cat and redirected that rudeness to Leafpool.

Well than I'm glad because he at least has that to continue giving him some sort of comfort while he sleeps. Being a blind Clan cat is already enough of a challenge for Jayfeather, after all. Good for him!
