Alright.
This has bugged me literally forever.
But why the heck do Firestar's Quest and Mapleshade's Vengeance share so many character names, and yet they aren't the same cats? It makes no sense to me. The time period there was too small to have allowed for it. Larkwing was the MC of Windclan for both sets of allegiances, and was the only cat revealed to have been the same in both books. Based on that, why on Earth aren't the rest of the cats the same? It was around the same time period. I would guess that there would be maybe 10 years in-between the books, but idk that for sure. This ties in with my previous post about having the completed list of leaders, deputies, and medicine cats from start to finish. I would make things so much easier to understand!
I know I can't be the only one confused by this. Thoughts?

It's all just a big coincidence. Vicky originally thought they were all the same cats though, but then said she made a mistake after being made aware of the timeline. She also thought Reedshine, Eeltail, and Darkstar from MV and Reedshine, Eeltail, and Darkstar from CotC were the same cat even though this was impossible since the latter three were alive in the early days of the code and MV clearly takes place much closer to the present timeline.
There's also only about seven years in between SkyClan's exile and MV (SkyClan left twenty years before Bluestar was born), but the thing is, some cats in the allegiances don't exactly match, either. You might be able to make an exception for the two Seedpelts even though they have completely different descriptions, but the others? Milkfur from FQ is WindClan's deputy while Milkfur from MV is a regular RiverClan warrior, and Sloefur from FQ is RiverClan's deputy while the one in MV is ShadowClan's medicine cat. Save for the gender, Larkwing is the only one to match up with FQ almost exactly.

it boggles my mind why the editors dont have some big document where they roughly keep track of timelines to prevent this exact mix-up

i agree. it's super annoying (especially for me bc i make family trees and i have to look through all the lists and see how many reused names there r).
my fave is that there's multiple larkwings and milkfurs/mintfurs

it boggles my mind why the editors dont have some big document where they roughly keep track of timelines to prevent this exact mix-up Honestly, I don't think the editors really care as much as the fans do about keeping the timeline consistent (hence why they don't keep track). I'm not sure I blame them - if I were a children's book editor at Harpercollins/Working Partners, I'd assume that my target demographic wouldn't mind if two cats shared the same name or if there's a minor continuity error - but unfortunately, they'd be very wrong. Even as a kid, I remember the Warriors Wiki keeping an intensely detailed family tree on each character, and pointing out continuity and naming issues.
