...who died instead of Willowshine. And this is coming from someone who really likes Mothwing... I think it would've made more sense and it would have had much more of an impact on the characters like Shadowsight and the other meddies. I mean I would've been shook and sad either way but I would've felt more satisfied as she has been kicking for a good long time. I guess they just wanted a reason for her go back to RC. :[

i agree. i want misty, reed, moth, and willow to all die, but i had a specific order in mind when i would like to see it happen. mothwing goes first, then reed, misty, and then lastly willow.
but now it's canon willow dies first and im very upset about it. u're 100% right. mothwing should have died first before willowshine. not only bc she's older and i have a vendetta against old characters, but bc mothwing could have done something more meaningful and allow willowshine to carry her legacy for her when she's gone.
in a fanfic i was workig on when TBC started, i implemented that plan of riverclan's leadership group dying off (in the order i specified earlier). and in it, willowshine was very sad about mothwing sacrificing herself in the final battle of TBC (which i dont specify bc idk how the actual last book of TBC will go). willowshine trains graykit/paw (one of curlfeather's kits) to be medicine cat. and in the end, willowshine ends up getting sick and dying, naming graypaw graystorm (or graywing if we want to name him after mothwing, but tbh it'd get confussing bc we have graywing from the guide books as well as gray wing from dotc).
i would have liked canon mothwing to die saving someone in a dramatic way. maybe she takes a blow for someone and show her warrior spirit one last time bc she was a warrior before being tricked into being a medicine cat by hawkfrost...it would have been nice if mothwing died saving willowshine, or maybe she died saving bramblestar (unpossessed). if she died taking a blow for her half brother, it'd tie everything nicely and maybe bramblestar could have a positive interaction with her as her half brother...

I actually feel like it should have been Jayfeather, honestly. Mostly because once he dies I can stop paying attention to these books.
But actually. Before I read that she actually dies, I was really hoping Jayfeather would be chosen to go. He has (limited, but still) experience in the DF and would have a better connection to Squilf. He's more experienced with the realm of spiritual shenanigans. Plus, this entire arc (and AVoS too) has been a completely missed opportunity for Jayfeather to be a mentor figure to at least one of the main characters.
Then they sniped Willow as soon as she fell asleep and I was like "ah. That's why they didn't choose Jayfeather." Though can you freaking imagine if they sniped him instead? Oh my god, the riots that would occur.
Edited to add spoiler tag.

Circumstance-wise, it makes more sense for it to be Willowshine, not Mothwing. Especially because of Mothwing's lack of faith, although she acknowledges StarClan and knows they're real, it doesn't mean she's fully committed to them like most warriors are. And that's okay. She has her qualms with StarClan, and so for her to do something like this, with this much level of spiritual requirement, I don't think they'd get the best results. Willowshine is also neither Tiger or Firekin, so she has no connections with Squirrelflight or Bramblestar.
It also gives Mothwing more incentive to leave and go back to RiverClan too, without a medicine cat, she doesn't have much of a choice. It would mean RiverClan would possibly suffer from her absence, now that Willow is gone for good. It also opens up the window for a new protagonist possibly? A RiverClan medicine cat that can train under Mothwing until her final days, Misty and Reed going as well would also be suitable too. It can signal the end of an era for RiverClan and hopefully new beginnings.

I agree with Maple and Cloudy Sky. It makes sense Willowshine volunteered first, didin't she have such a strong faith in StarClan? I remember Mothwing saying that she would jump off a cliff if StarClan told her to. It makes sense for her to go first.

I guess Willowshine dying did make sense for the plot... but I'm still so sad. I was not expecting her to be offed just like that. RIP my girl.
