Tom was the biological father, but Gray Wing raised them. Sparrow Fur, Owl Eyes, and Pebble Heart thought Gray Wing was their father, didn't they? But still, when they knew Tom was their dad, Sparrow Fur wanted to get to know him, and I think Owl and Pebble did too. Anyways, Sparrow Fur wants to get to know "her real daddy", which is understandable, and almost gets killed because of her pride, and Tom dies.
Later, when they're grown up, Gray Wing meets Slate, and he thinks at some point he'd love to have "biological" kits. And he dies when the kits are there. How lovely.
So what do you think about this? And not just Turtle Tail's, about the whole adoption concept in Warriors. Some people are upset because Hollyleaf's last words was to Leafpool and not Squirrelflight. Because the Three think Leaf is their mom.
To me, tbh, this is just too complicated. Gray Wing was upset about Sparrow Fur saying she wanted to know her real father. And he wanted a blood connection...?

Having biological kits was simply important to Gray Wing as well. It doesn't mean that he didn't love his adopted kits any less just because they weren't his actual offspring.
