In Barley's story, it's said that Scourge doesn't allow families to stay together because they might threaten his power. But Ice and Snake were allowed to stay together and even promoted up to Scourge's guard, so what gives? Graystripe's Vow also seems to indicate that the no family rule doesn't apply to some cats as Scraps freely defends Gremlin and no one points this out as rule breaking(they took issue with him defending a "traitor" but not the defense itself).
So what exactly are the rulings here? Or is it just awkward field guide writing at work again?

Probably a mistake, if I know the Erins. But realistically, maybe there's a number limit. Maybe only two or three can stay together. That, or what they define as "families" is just a mother with her kits.
Or Scourge shows favoritism and bends the rules for cats he deemed "worthy" and loyal enough for him.

I figured Snake and Ice weren’t living together so much as working together on Scourge’s guard. Maybe the rules are different for his guard as well. For Scraps and Gremlin, they may not have lived together either, and maybe the rules on family for a little more lax after Scourge died.

I don't think her change in management would have led to the rules softening up, though it is possible.

i was thinking what if the remaining bloodclan cats were like "fury, we'll follow ur leadership if u let us stay with our direct kin" or something like that.

i figured snake and ice were allowed to stay together since they vowed loyalty to him, unlike violet and barley, who just lived on the fringes of bloodclan.
as for gremlin and scraps, maybe something similar, but who knows. maybe the writers just forgot about that rule, or maybe fury didnt care about it.

I guess it really depends on how loyal that said family is to Scourge.

I think that since both proved to be strong allies when they worked together, Scourge let them work together as long as they still followed his command and were extremely loyal to him.

I didn’t mean so much in a “softened the rules to be nicer” way, more in a “Scourge is dead and he was the glue holding BloodClan together and now everyone’s scrambling to take over in the new power vacuum and maybe upholding some of the rules isn’t their top priority while they’re vying for power”
