Prologue
The three of three of them looked up the clouded skies that brought forth a light rain. Droplets slipped down their wet fur, failing to soak in as they were already damp from the long swim. The biggest of the bunch shook out his fur, sending water through the air. Their eyes were locked onto the darkness that lay in front of them.
One of them stepped forward, and turned to the other's. "It's finally time, this is what we've been working for all of our lives." His voice was stern, and his face filled with exhaustion. They had spent years working for this, and it finally came. Lightning crackled across the sky, highlighting just how dead the forest had become.
"Are we sure this is it though, what if we made another mistake, just like last time?" The smallest of the group said, her voice filled with concern. Her voice wavered across the trees, it was clear that this was not their first time thinking that this would be the end of a many moons journey.
The three of them held a silence, as they were clearly pondering if this could actually be it. If their life's work had actually come together. They stared in silence, hoping for one of them to speak up and confirm that this was it. Instead, one of them just nodded and signaled to move forward.
Quietly they crept across the damp grass, which was cold under their cracked pads. The trio's eyes were locked on what lay before them. But, on further investigation, it was another wall. The largest of the bunch unsheathed his claws, a low growl rising in his throat. "Foxdung! Why does this keep happening! Are we a bunch of mousebrains who can't figure it out. I thought we finally had it!" With that, he slashed at the stone wall, leaving a good scratch mark.
"I-it's fine." The weaker one stepped forward, his voice shaking. It was clear he was here for mostly moral support.
The larger one turned around, his glare piercing right through his eyes. "It's not fine! None of this is fine!"
"Stop!" The smaller one stepped forward, her voice commanding him to stop. "If you keep freaking out like this, we'll never find what we've been searching for!" She growled. She was very protective of the weaker one.
"Let's just keep moving." The larger one growled, pushing passed them forcefully, grunting at the fact that they had to continue on the journey.
She burst through the forest, jumping over roots and fallen logs. Fallenpaw needed to get back to camp, and quickly or else Reedstar would be extremely angry with her. He had given her his last warning quite some time ago and she had just barely managed to escape it the past few nights. He had been getting mad at her for staying out late in the forest, Fallenpaw assumed he was suspicious she was doing some shady business. Of course she wasn't, Fallenpaw just enjoyed how peaceful it was out there.
It seemed that everything was so noisy and overwhelming at camp, but down in the darker part of the forest it was quiet. Fallenpaw was always considered strange by the other apprentices, she didn't enjoy training and certainly was not excited nor worthy to get a warrior name anytime soon.
What she usually did in the forest though, was to go to her stream. It was a secret stream that no one in Duskclan knew about. It was hidden behind a thick wall of bushes and an assortment of other plants. There you could hear the birds singing their songs, and the stars glittered far above her head.
Although Fallenpaw hadn't seen the stars there in quite some time because of her knew curfew. She had to be back at camp by the time the sun set. And she had to stay in camp until the sun had risen above the horizon. It was like Duskclan didn't want their cats to see the stars.
Weren't the stars their warrior ancestors though? Why did Reedstar want to hide them from her. You couldn't see the stars from camp, the thick forest ceiling made that nearly impossible. The only light in camp you could have was the sun streaming through the trees.
Fallenpaw tried to shake the thought off of some deeper rooted issue as she needed to focus on getting home as fast as she could. The apprentice forced her legs to carry her swiftly and quickly, even though they seemed to be burning.
As she bolted through the forest, camp was in sight. It came closer with every paw that landed on the damp dirt floor. Her breath was heavy and quick, but she was almost there. Fallenpaw saw the camp entrance, and swerved in the direction it was in. With that, she ran through the entrance.
Luckily, the sun hadn't even dipped below the horizon yet. It was a little disappointing to know that she could have stayed later, but Fallenpaw didn't want to get into more trouble. If she received one more warning from Reedstar, she would be banned from training for two moons.
She wasn't big on training, but that would be embarrassing. The other apprentices would be even more baffled by her. The thought of not training was good, but the thought of the other apprentices bullying her overtook it quickly. Instead she just shrugged to herself and padded over to the fresh kill pile.
Fallenpaw picked out a nice vole, and moved over to sit down in the comfort of some tree roots. They were curved in such a way that it would support you while laying down. This was why she sat here a lot, it was by far the best tree in all of the forest.
Just as she took the first bite of her food, pawsteps quickly approached her. By the sound of them, she knew it was trouble. "Look what we have here?" A voice snickered. A few menacing laughs came from behind the voice. Her big brown eyes looked up to see it, and of course, as always, it was Barkpaw.
