It wasnβt until the family meeting dissolved that the reality of the situation began to sink in for Devarah. There was a slight shake to her hands as she maneuvered her way through the throng of people. Some partygoers seemed to notice that something was amiss, watching quietly as Devarah walked by, but thankfully the majority were distracted by their drinks and their surroundings. The musicians continued to play and delicate flower petals continued to rain from the rafters.
In the chaos, Devarah found herself separated from her brother. She could see him pausing after a near-collision in the fray, but she did not pause to wait for him. He had his own tasks to accomplish before they departed. It would be more efficient if they made their arrangements independently and then reconvened when they were ready. After all, Dev still had a number of things she needed to do. First and foremost, she needed to find her older sister. She had not seen Junai since the start of the party. Perhaps she was already going over the news with palace officials and making arrangements of her own. More likely, however, was that she was off somewhere with no idea of what was happening. After all, the only reason Devarah was up to date was because she had been with Grandfather Mors when it happened. The vast majority of the people in the palace had no idea that Invictus was under attack, nor that the world eaters had returned.
Devarah walked swiftly, clenching her multi-colored skirts in her hands to avoid tripping on them. Her mind was overflowing. She meant to track down Junai but had no idea of where her sister could have disappeared. So, for no conscious reason reason, her feet led her to the familyβs residential wing. Perhaps she would find her siblings there, or run into Keela to help make preparations for the ship.
Instead she encountered her father. He was standing in the lounge, where the family conducted most of their business. He was dwarfed by the arches of the palace and the bookshelves that nearly reached their peaks. The room was bathed in warm, comforting light. The silence contrasted starkly with the din of the ballroom. Without exchanging any words, Devarah knew the king had heard the news. He opened his arms and she fell into him, thankful for the wordless embrace. He kissed the top of her head, squeezed her for a moment, then released her.
βChrys and I are going. Maybe Jun too if we can find her,β Devarah stated without any more explanation. She looked up at her father to find that his face shared none of the hardened resolve her motherβs had shown. Instead, he looked worried and helpless. Her heart constricted.
βAlright,β he said simply. Dev paused, expecting him to forbid her from going. But he did not. Instead, he added, βBe careful.β
She nodded. It had been easy to lie to her mother, to tell her she would watch others die before jeopardizing her own life. But she made no such promise to her father. Thankfully he did not ask her to, and she suspected that was why his cheeks were wet.
βIβll be fine,β she assured him firmly. She allowed a performative cockiness enter her voice as she stated, βBe back before you notice weβre gone.β
They hugged again, then Devarah stopped by her room to get some shoes. The ones she selected were made for combatβboots of stiff black leather. Not wanting to waste time on changing outfits, she slipped them on and then vacated her quarters. Only once she was halfway to the ship did she realize it might have been the last time she would ever see her room, or her parents, or the ragged old cat that frequented the halls. Then she pushed such sentimental thoughts away.
The Illusionistβs ship was not far. In fact, the palace was in a crescent shape, and the landing area for all ships was within in the arch of that crescent. It was constructed to be accessible from all parts of the palace both for convenience and in case of emergency. Devarah made her way through the quiet side halls, passing the occasional bustling servant. The landing dock itself was also rather empty. There were a number of ships there, both a mix of Illusionist vessels and those belonging to guests. Theirs was one of the largest, an imposing craft with billowing white sails and rows of cannons. Devarah could spot a few lights already lit on its deck.
When she arrived, she discovered Keela had made quick work. General Penya was at work readying the ship with a few men, and Keela jumped up when she saw her mistress appear. βI packed some things for you and put them in one of the cabins. Penya said we can leave within the hour if you and the others are prepared by then.β

((hhhhhhh what a week! thank you for being patient with me! junai's up next!)) qβΊΛ*ο½₯ΰΌβΎγE M B E R Eγβ½ΰΌο½₯*ΛβΊο½‘ Embereβs gaze shot across the garden so fast he could feel his mechanic eye whirr in its socket. To him, it was as if the grandma melted from the shadows into the light of the lanterns that lined the garden path. (She probably just stepped out when he wasnβt looking, but the thought that she just sort of manifested lined up better with the impression he's got going on in his head.)
Alantaβs swat to the arm made Embere jump and hiss. βOw, come on!β
He frowned at the old lady. He wasnβt very keen on speaking with her again - she did use him to jump the wall and promptly abandoned him after all - but for some reason Alanta seemed dead-set on figuring this ladyβs deal. As Alanta confronted her, Embere tried to sneak away, only to be dragged right back.
Gran Georgina seemed amused. βHe admitted such, did he? So candid,β she said. She tilted her head a little too sharply, like an inquisitive bird. βYou donβt seem worried. Not going to call someone to escort me out? No guards on your arm, I see.β Her gaze fell upon Embere, who stiffened, before meeting Alantaβs. βForgive me for my presumption, but despite being part of the royal family, you are not one for rules, are you?β
She smiled benignly as she shuffled closer. βMy goal? Why, I simply wish to greet the betrothed and give them my congratulations, of course.β Sincerity dripped from her words, like a cake lathered with too much frosting. βWhat a clever alliance, a brave stand against the perceived enemy. Donβt you think?β Gran Georgina then let out a sad little sigh. βWhatβs unfortunate is that your family is standing against the wrong enemy.β
She shook her head, as if what she said was a mere passing thought, or a comment on how cloudy it was. βBut thatβs beside the point. Whatβs your name, my dear? It is an honor to meet one of the heirs to the ruling class.β Gran gave a gracious bow, hands clasped in front of her. βOh? Whatβs this? You are searching for something, are you not?β She leaned forward, suddenly quite close, looking into Alantaβs eyes. βThereβs something missing from your life. Something you crave, no?β
Embere was quietly prodding Alantaβs shoulder, wary. Heβs heard these snake oil salesman pitches in the marketplace all the time. The familiar wording strikes him hard, and he tugged at her sleeve in a way he wouldβve never dared had the princess not been hauling him left and right the entire night. βPrincess,β he muttered, before amending, βAlanta. Remember? Dragon?β

((comedy is oft derived from suffering, so they say rip junai lol))
β§ΰΌΊβ₯ΰΌ»βγJ U N A IγβΰΌΊβ₯ΰΌ»β§ A smile stretched across Junaiβs face at Aeverβs hopeful interpretation of the lonely whale. βYeah,β she said softly. She felt a little giddy - these were her favorite kinds of conversation, ones that mused and speculated. It was rare the conversations in her life ventured further thanβ¦ the weather. Marriage. Debate on whether the dessert spoon was still relevant.
Speaking of, despite of how weary of marriage talk Junai had grown, she found herself listening eagerly to Aeverβs thoughts. Again, it was one of hope. Of looking forward to the future, despite the inevitable challenge. She looked up at the starry sky; hearing that made her a little hopeful too. βI donβt mean to be a devilβs advocate, but,β she said, βtechnically speaking, you both do have a choice. You could refuse. Disguise yourself and disappear onto a starship. You could run off to another planet and leave everything behind.β Junai twisted her hands in the skirt of her dress. It felt both good and terrifying to speak out loud the thoughts that had been drifting through her head. βBut you feel like you canβt, because you have duties and responsibilities and also it wouldnβt be good if the universe were consumed, so. You donβt. But you can.β
She shrugged. βIs staying the right choice? The obvious choice? Of course. But itβs still a choice. And thinking thatβ¦ helps.β Junai bit her lip and looked away. It was far too easy to speak to this man.
βAt least my voice isnβt 52 hertz,β Aever offered, and Junai snorted, covering her mouth with her hand.
βIβd need special equipment to even comprehend what youβre saying,β she said, smiling harder.
Then Aever said, βPerhaps Iβll see you around here after the wedding,β and Junai froze.
She stared at the cobblestone beneath her wheels, mind spinning. She should just tell him now. She should tell him now or it was going to be so awkward when the wedding comes up. But how the heck is she going to admit it? βOh, I kinda panicked and just straight up lied haha gotcha'? Would it somehow break the marriage agreement? Should she instead make up something about looking very similar to the princess? Mention that she was going to be shipped off to another planet before the wedding? Oh, why was she so foolish!
βActually,β Junai said, trailing off as she struggled to make up her mind, but before she could utter another word, one of her servants came running up the path to greet them.
βYour Highness,β panted Iana, eyes wide with urgency. βKeela just notified me. I -β As the tall servant girl spoke, she awkwardly bowed at Aever, clearly recognizing him as a royal. She flicked away her long black braid and kept her hands neatly pressed behind her back, her posture practically perfect.
βI apologize if I am interrupting your night. I was recently informed that the Queen is in need of you.β This she directed at Junai, who suddenly found it difficult to breathe. βIt concerns Invictus andβ¦β Here she faltered, gaze darting towards Aever. She quickly made up her mind, however, clearly deciding that his royalty status deemed him worthy of the knowledge. βAnd the World Eaters.β
Junai felt the pit of her stomach fall away, and she was left drifting, untethered. βThank you, Iana,β she said faintly. She barely heard herself saying a courtesy, βI have to go,β towards Aever before her numb hands landed on her wheels, pushing herself towards the ballroom. Some small part of her hoped Aever would come with her, but she pushed that part away. She couldnβt even think about that right now - her family needed her.

[ Hi guys! Update: things are going better for me than they were the last few months. I'm just generally in a better headspace. I also have some time off through July. So I'm hoping I'll be able to write a lot more this summer.
I'm actually thinking of turning this concept into a novel. I've been thinking of writing a book for a while now, and this world has developed so easily in my brain. I think it might actually translate well into a series of some kind. I did want to get all of your permission first. I obviously won't be using any of your characters. But I figured I should ask anyway because you all helped with the concept and everything <3 Also hmu if you want to help with the process at all.
