Or is it that the editors just don't know for how long some of these cats have lived for?
I feel like the authors might have a slight inability when it comes to killing off parts of the cast in the Warriors series that have been with us for several arcs and to which they perhaps have formed a sort of attachment.
*looking at the current ThunderClan elders and RiverClan's leader Mistystar in particular*

I feel like it's a bit of both. It's really bad though, obviously, because it prevents good and natural storytelling just for the sake of keeping cats around. Like if you really love them and want them to be remembered as good characters, make them good characters, make them do things, and eventually, give them a proper death. Don't just keep them around just to have them around.

At least some of them are most definitely due to nostalgia, such as with Graystripe.

I think it’s both, especially in cases like Graystripe and Mistystar (The former should not have been able to make the journey to the old forest at his age, and the latter is noted as being the oldest cat in all four Clans despite being an active leader and not relying on her deputy very much). I think the other problem is that both the editors and the authors are caught in between a rock and a hard place. If they don’t kill off the old characters, people will accuse them of making these characters live too long and stifling newer characters. But if they do kill off characters, especially the older ones that have had a lot of time to develop, and especially off screen, people will get mad at losing their favorites or complain that they didn’t like how the character was killed off or why. No matter what, there’s backlash, and it’s something the authors can’t avoid. So it makes it hard to make a decision.

I think it's both. The authors are probably very reluctant to do radical stuff like kill off the old characters, or change any of the original rules. I wish they'd step up a bit and not change Warriors completely, but at least wipe out some really old things and characters.

100%...there is no doubt about it.
if it were up to me, cats would only last 3 arcs (4 would be pushing it for me).
this would mean all cats from the first arc would die by Po3/OotS. sandstorm, graystripe, dustpelt, brackenfur, cloudtail, brightheart, thornclaw, and all them would have been dead way before AVoS if they just let them die naturally...now a days cats die too old (cats used to be considered old in the first arc at like what? 5-8 years old or something? life spans should have remained short because...theyr'e in the WILD for christs sake). cats from the second arc would die by AVoS, etc.

I think it's due to nostalgia from the older books. And maybe some reluctance to kill them off could be because of the fans. Maybe they are afraid of how their fans will react if they kill off a character like Graystripe or Cloudtail?
