THE DRAGON GEMThis is a casual, advanced fantasy roleplay which anyone is welcome to jump into. The setting and story are somewhat inspired by the new disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon, but we are using creative license to make a few changes. For example, the themes and characters will be a bit more mature. The dragons will be scarier and more powerful, as will the villains. All of the necessary information will be listed here, in the first post. But this roleplay will follow a more casual structure. The Setting:Similar to Raya and the Last Dragon, this is an Asian-inspired dystopian world in which a great disaster has occurred. The "druun" have infested the land, turning all of their victims into stone. This has left the world fractured and unstable. Many former powers which once stood between society and chaos have been destroyed. The Sacred Army, which was composed of dragon riders, was once tasked with keeping the peace. But it too has been eviscerated. The ancient temples were overrun with druun five years ago. Only a few survivors and their dragons made it out alive, and now many live as nomads in the desert region known as The Tail.
The Plot: The surviving members of the sacred army have been living as nomads and outlaws in the tail for five years. Those who remain have found a peace of sorts, drifting from village to village and occasionally stealing to survive. Their dragons must be hidden in order to be kept safe. Little do they know, however, a sect of their army survived the disaster and have been accumulating power under their young leader, Ichiro. He has a powerful weapon, a dragon gem which can be used to steal the powers of living dragons and given to his own. He has his own small army growing and plans on uniting all the land under his rule. But he has been blinded by his own power and ambition, and he will not stop until every man, woman, and child bends a knee. His brother and former lover flee to the Tail to find the other dragon riders, hoping to summon a force powerful enough to stop Ichiro.

(Hey howdy hey - this RP seems really interesting! I haven't seen Raya and the Last Dragon yet but I love the concept and am a sucker for any kind of dystopian setting. Is there any kind of joining form to follow and does each character have to have their own dragon or could they be without one [i.e. never had one, their dragon is dead, etc...]?)

(Okay wonderful! Yes, what exactly are the Druun? Do they have any special abilities/powers or specific goals? And I'd love to get a couple character forms up (: are there different roles for characters to be? If so, what are they? I know I have a lot of questions and I appreciate your patience!)

(Okay, gotcha! I'll try and make a character for the nomads and ichiro's forces so I can get involved and learn more about both. Is there any direction you wanted the plot to go starting off?)

TIENLOCATION: THE TAIL โStay here,โ Tien commanded. She was speaking to her dragon, and the two of them were crouched in the shadow of a large sand dune. They blended into the environment so well that they would have been difficult for anyone to spot, even from the nearby dirt road which was littered with carts and hat-wearing merchants. Over the crest of the dune, there was a small trading village with stacked houses made of mudbrick. Colorful flags and draped fabrics danced from the lines between the homes.
In contrast to the rich colors, Tien looked like she had emerged from the desert, which wasnโt far from the truth. Her loose fighterโs pants had been bleached to a pale gray by the sun. Her torso wrapped in a twisted white linen that clung to her lithe figure. A light green scarf was draped over her head and shoulders, protecting them from the sweltering warmth. It also served to cover her unusual white hair which pooled like water down her back. Her hands were dirty, sand embedded under her fingernails and skin dry. But she felt strong, and she looked it too, if not a bit hungry.
Her dragon, Lanh, was half buried in the sand. Her tendrilled head bobbed in annoyance at her riderโs command. She wanted to be involved, but she was always forced to hide out of sight so as not to attract attention. She grumbled, sounding like a small earthquake, as she nudged Tien with her snout.
โDonโt worry, I wonโt be long,โ Tien assured her, running a hand over Lanhโs rough beige scales.
Before the large reptile could protest further, the young woman stood and trudged up the dune in the direction of the village. She fingered the two coins in her pocket. They were practically worthless, only enough to buy a loaf of bread or some dried meat if she was lucky. She would have to rely on either bartering or her charm if she wanted anything better than that. It was a foolโs hope, but she wished to buy something to bring back to the other nomads. Maybe a special treat which they could all share.
To the small villageโs credit, it had a bustling marketplace. The square was packed with venders in covered booths and people carrying baskets of goods on their arms. They were mostly too occupied to pay Tien any attention. When anyone looked in her direction, she lowered her gaze and scanned the tantalizing supply of goods around her. She paused at one stand which boasted a rich bounty of delicious, bright fruit. Tien felt her mouth water. It had been years since she had something so fresh. It reminded her of her childhood, sucking on sweet fruit from the trees of the sacred temple. The merchant was bartering in a fast, sniping voice with a woman a decade or so older than Tien. While the two fought over the price, Tien slipped one of the plump fruits into the pouch at her hip.
It was not the first thing she had ever stolen, nor did she intend for it to be her last. In fact, she felt quite pleased with herself as she stepped back into the flow of the crowd seemingly unnoticed. She managed to spend her coins on a large bag of rice which would last the nomads a few weeks when combined with hunted meat. Once her pocket was empty of coin, she drifted around the market for a little while longer, just happy to breathe in the sights and colors. At last she began to feel badly for leaving Lanh waiting in the sun, so she shuffled through the crowds toward a narrow backstreet. Just as she was slipping away from the market, she felt a strong hand close around her upper arm and pull her back.
Her head whipped back, half expecting to see the fruit merchant she had stolen from, or maybe an armed guard who had witnessed her theft. Instead, the hand on her arm belonged to a tall, tanned young man. He had tousled dark curls and a handsome face. She pulled away instinctively but felt his grip tighten. His chest was exposed under an open black robe, and a golden necklace in the shape of a dragon rested on his collar.
โYou gonna pay for that, Tien Ngo?โ he asked gruffly.
Her dark eyes narrowed first in anger and then in surprise. How did he know her name? โLet me goโ she demanded, voice hoarse. Her gaze shifted back to his face, looking for anything familiar. And then she froze, shock blooming across her face.
โKosuke?โ she blurted. Before his name even breached her lips, she could see his mouth pulling back into a smile. She launched into a breathless hug, tightening her arms over his shoulders. And then she quickly stepped back, examining him with renewed interest. โSurely youโre not the scrawny, gapped toothed boy who used to drive Master Lin mad in class.โ She laughed, overjoyed at the sight of a person she had long assumed dead. The laughter faded from her voice as she asked in disbelief, โYouโre alive?โ

(I can edit the form if anything needs to be changed! I made Hai as kind of a 'hitman' type character for Ichiro - someone who doesn't mind doing his dirty work should he desire it. I'd also like to make a nomad, but I wanted to ask beforehand; is there any kind of personality that you think would go well with the current group/any role that would be helpful?)
Hai, male, 26 - Member of Ichiro's forces - Quiet, skilled, cold, loyal - Tall, thin man with a serious expression. his clothes, hair, and everything else always seem to be neat and in order. [ I love Hai! The idea of him sacrificing his dragon is really interesting too! As for the nomads, not really! Tien is the only real nomad so far (plus Kosuke now) unless ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ makes one as well. So you could give her a buddy of some kind if you want. Or they could meet someone else in the town to team up with. Really any kind of personality is great! :D ]

(Thank you! I thought that would help push him over the line from just 'some bad dude' to a character that really doesn't mind sacrificing anything or anyone as long as it benefits him. I'll make a friend for Tien! Maybe it could be a villager she came across at some point who decided to travel with her and learn from her?)

(Thank you! I appreciate it. Also, I had an idea where Nami could 'befriend' Lanh in a way. Since she is passionate about saving the dragons but doesn't have one of her own, I can see her really becoming fond of Tien's dragon.)

ICHIROLOCATION: THE SPINE The gem was heavy and cool in his hand. If he closed his eyes, he could imagine that it was a river stone that had been smoothed over by thousands of years of erosion. But it was not a common rock. It was something far more precious than that. It was as clear as glass save the suspended white cloud of magic within it. It pulsed with power, like a living thing. The sensation was familiar in his palm, but he remembered the surge of electricity he felt when he first touched it five years ago. Now it was practically an extension of his body.
His other hand was placed on the flank of a panting dragon. The creature was muzzled and chained to the ground. It wriggled when he touched it, but he knew it wasnโt capable of freeing itself. His men were adept at capturing dragons. This one was young, he guessed fifteen or sixteen years old and about the weight of a single-horse wagon. Its scales were a gray color that matched the heavy cloud cover above their heads.
โAnd whatโs the power?โ Ichiro asked, dark eyes flicking up to the handful of men standing nearby. All were dressed in the black and midnight blue of the Ascended Order. The first, a slender man named Boqin, cleared his throat and answered:
โTelekinesis, my lord.โ
A look of subtle surprise passed over Ichiroโs face and he seemed impressed as he regarded the small dragon a second time. โThatโs a mighty gift for such a young creature.โ As he said it, a few rocks near the head of the dragon began to levitate. Ichiro, unphased, strode to face the dragon and held out the gem. โFighting will only prolong your suffering,โ he stated coolly. One of the rocks shot toward his head. He side-stepped it with ease and then released a sharp whistle. A few seconds of silence followed before a strong gust of wind bellowed through the tops of the bamboo trees and a dark, twisting shape appeared in the skies. Ichiroโs dragon was longer than an old oak tree, and his middle as thick and sturdy as a boulder. He landed in the clearing with a thud that shook the ground beneath their feet. His fearsome maw open to release a shuddering exhale as he greeted his rider.
The young dragon struggled as he realized what was about to happen. He must have sensed the power radiating off of Hibiki, the dragon the color of the night sky. It was an unnatural power, as palpable as electricity on the air. Fittingly, thunder clapped in the distance.
Ichiro knelt by the head of the young dragon and placed his free palm on its snout. โPlease,โ it begged in its grinding, reptilian voice. Dragons rarely tried to communicate with strangers in human tongue, despite being capable. It was too unnatural for their vocal cords to mimic the softness of mammalian speech. But the young dragon pleaded anyway, and Ichiroโs noble mouth formed a disapproving frown.
โQuiet,โ he commanded, and the dragon complied except for a low, uneasy whine. The creature watched, eyes widening, as Hibiki prowled closer so that his head peered over his masterโs shoulder. โQuiet now, little one,โ Ichiro murmured, his voice gentle. As he said it, the orb in his palm flashed with a blinding white light.
The young dragonโs head hit the ground with a sharp thud. In an instant, his wriggling, breathing body had been transformed into one of solid stone. He would remain there forever, as much a part of the landscape as the hills and trees. Eventually moss and vines would grow over his paralyzed body, which was now as peaceful as a deep slumber.
Ichiro stood and ducked under Hibikiโs looming head before walking back to his men. โLet us return,โ he prompted, referring to their fortress which was tucked into the nearby mountain. It had once been a palace for an emperor, but he had adapted it to suit his own purposes. Today it housed all of his forces, mostly foot soldiers, dragon hunters, and the few riders that remained. It would only be a short walk to return to the safety of the walls.
Hibiki knew he was no longer needed. He launched into the sky and disappeared over the tops of the trees, off to hunt and sail freely in the clouds he had summoned. The surrounding area housed no predators that could threaten him, especially with his growing collection of powers.
"Oh, and retrieve the chains. We can reuse them for the next one."

Hai / The Spine / Indirectly; Ichiro
Hai leaned against one of the studier trees surrounding the group of men. Some of them were watching Ichiro with interest, eyes darting warily to the chained dragon beside him. However, he was uninterested in the dragon struggling against its bonds, his thumb playing absently with the tip of one of his daggers. This was something he had seen countless times before and after a while one got used to the eventual cry for help from the dragon, or, for some of the prouder dragons, the look of indignation masking the fear they surely must have felt. Even rarer were the dragons who felt no fear, only betrayal. The first dragon he had ever seen with that look was his own. Pressing down on the blade harder with his thumb, Hai's eyes narrowed. He thad traded his dragon for a position, for power. What was the purpose of a dragon, after all, if not power? Companionship? Maybe to those weaker than he, possibly; to those who were incapable of getting what they wanted on their own. The fools who had to rely on another creature to feel whole.
Hibiki's arrival was what finally pulled Hai out of his thoughts. Unmoving, he shifted his gaze to follow the arrival and departure of the dragon. He gave an almost disdainful exhale. This dragon wasn't a companion, but a weapon to Ichiro, surely. A powerful weapon, no doubt about it, but coupled with the gem his leader was holding? Seeing displays like this regularly only reinforced Hai's idea that all of his actions were justified. That he was really on the winning side and only greatness lay before him.

HANAKOLOCATION: THE SPINE Hanako watched from a distance as Ichiro approached the small gray dragon that was chained, prone, before him. The dragonโs serpentine body was quivering, legs clawing at the ground, in his desperation to escape. But there was no escape, was there? Over the past five years, Ichiro and his men had gotten very good at capturing and subduing dragons. Hanakoโs hands curled into fists at her side, but she did not move, expression impossible to read as she watched Ichiro โ the man she loved. Surrounding him were several soldiers of the Ascended Order, outfitted in similar colors as Hibiki, Ichiroโs dragon โ black, and a deep, glittering midnight blue. Hanako herself was dressed in similar colors, but she stood a distance away from Ichiro, staying out of range of the dragon gemโs magic, and staying out of Ichiroโs way. Hai stood a little ways off from Ichiro as well. Hanako narrowed her gaze at him, but still said nothing.
In one of Ichiroโs hands was the dragon gem โ the thing that was supposed to stop the Druun once and for all. She listened as Ichiro asked what the dragonโs power was โ telekinesis โ and watched as the little grey beast tried to fight back; the rock that was no doubt intended to end Ichiroโs life missed as the man stepped out of the way. In response, Ichiro let out a sharp whistle, and Hanako knew what its purpose was โ a summoning. From the distance, there was a blast of wind that caused the bamboo trees to wail and moan. A dark, twisting shape snaked down from the sky, rippling with strength and power. Hibiki slammed to the ground next to Ichiro, jaws cracking open in greeting. Hibiki was massive, extending tens of feet in length, his form rippling with muscle and strength. Next to Hanako, her own dragon let out a guttural rumble, and she reached to her right, laying her hand on the dragonโs snout to calm him down a bit. Rin was nothing if not impulsive, and currently he was less than pleased with Hibiki. When Ichiro lifted the gem, bringing it closer to the chained dragon, Hanako closed her eyes and looked away โ and yet she still saw what happened in her mindโs eye.
Saw the dragon gem fill with a sudden brilliant light, the glow rippling outward to wash across the grey dragon. Saw as the dragonโs body stiffened, its sides growing still as the breath left its body. Saw as its scales lost their gleam and became dull; as its eyes darkened and its life faded away, leaving only a stone skeleton behind. She did not open her eyes as she heard Hibiki leave, and as she heard Ichiro begin the journey back to the fortress. She focused on the dragon beside her; listened to the air that thundered in his lungs, at the magic that prickled beneath his scales. After a long moment, she opened her eyes, and stared into Rinโs gaze. There was no need to speak; were both thinking the same thing.
Ichiroโฆ something had changed.
Five years ago, when heโd first told her of his plan for the dragon gem, of his idea to banish the Druun once and for all, Hanako had believed him. The first few dragons that given their magic to the dragon gem had done so willingly; they had been old, and had wanted their deaths to further the battle against the Druun. But with each dragon that the gem devoured, something within Ichiro had begun to change. As Hibiki swelled with the stolen magic, Ichiroโs heart had darkened, like the dragon gem had cast a shadow over him.
The Ichiro sheโd fell in love with โ the Ichiro that loved her โ was still in there. She had to believe that, because if she let herself lose hope, let herself accept what Ichiro had become, then her world would be finally sundered. Ichiro and Rin were all she had left; she would not survive the loss of either of them. She closed her eyes again briefly, and exhaled. She lifted her right hand, and stared at the ring that was wrapped around the third finger. Ichiro had given it to her, beforeโฆ before. Before everything had become dark and uncertain. She clenched her hand into a fist.
Hanakoโs face settled into an impassive mask again, and she headed after Ichiro. But within, a storm was raging.

ICHIROLOCATION: THE SPINE Ichiro walked up the path back to the fortress. He could hear some of his men stay behind to deal with the cleanup and the other half follow behind him. He would have to organize another patrol to go out before night. Each hour without hunting was an hour wasted. Dragons were becoming harder to find around the Spine, which meant they had to dedicate increasing amounts of time to scouring the forest. They were also beginning to run into dragons with powers that overlapped with the ones Hibiki already had. There was little point in using the gem in those instances, and he usually just let the creatures go. Some time ago he had considered offering such powers to his closest allies. But something prevented him from doing it. When his brother left, his resolve hardened.
He spotted Hanako up ahead, and his expression lifted. She was dressed in the colors of the Ascended Order: black and midnight blue, but her robes were nicer than those of common soldiers. Much like his own, they were made of fine silks and lined with sturdier fabrics to provide both structure and protection. But her clothes were not all that set her apart from the others. Compared to his entourage, she was smaller and more elegant. A flash of silver glinted on her finger. The ring he had given her.
He paused when he reached her, and cupped her face in his hands. She was much shorter than him, and he studied her from above, drinking in her familiar features. โHow are you, my love?โ he asked before lightly kissing her forehead. He sensed an uneasiness in her mood, but guessed it was nothing more than afternoon gloom. He was well acquainted with her energy. Wariness was not unusual and he paid it little mind other than to ask with a half smile, โIn need of a nap?โ
Before she answered, he was reminded of his own plans for the afternoon and he called out to his advisors as they passed. โHai, Eito, Naozumi! Meet me in the courtyard.โ His gaze followed the men back into the safety of the fortress before drifting back to Hanako.
The smile on his mouth faded as he noticed the storminess in her expression remained. His hands released her head and he asked, incredulous, โWhat is it?โ They had known each other long enough that it was impossible to keep secrets from each other. The muscles in his jaw tightened and he looked past her to the palace where his advisors were waiting for him to join.
โLetโs get back,โ he stated, and he placed his hand on the small of her back as he guided her in the direction of the fortress. Hopefully whatever argument they were about to have would be a quick one. He could sense from her sudden iciness that she was angry with him about something. And that he did not want to accept. After what happened with Kosuke, his fuse was growing shorter. He was tired of justifying his actions. There was still work to be done, and it would all be easier if his allies complied rather than slowing his progress. He prayed silently that she was about to scold him for something insignificant, like the fact that he was leaving their bed each morning before the sun lightened the sky. Or the fact that he was skipping meals to spend more time in the war room. But he knew deep down that it was something more serious than that. Before she even began to speak, he was preparing his counterpoints.
