Touka | loosening up a bit | Cloverleaf |"Oh god, okay stop stop," said Touka, shaking her head and almost laughing in pity as Xichen practically contorted himself to try and avoid making her uncomfortable. "Yeah, no, my folks are dead, it's fine, it was a long time ago, I'm not gonna start crying in the middle of the quad, or whatever. So just...yeah. It's fine." She cleared her throat, glad to have cleared the air but feeling a little awkward about it now. "Yeah, so, I had it last night, then I left this morning to go to breakfast, and then I didn't go to breakfast. So it's maybe in my room, but if we're lucky, maybe I dropped it somewhere."

Hange | on a journey | strider |"Oh, I know where it is," said Hange brightly, starting off down the path towards where the quad met the main sidewalk. "It's not very far. Just a few blocks away from here." As Newt asked his question, they smiled, staring straight ahead as excitement ran through them at the thought of it. "Chemistry," they said, swinging their arms. "And pre-medicine. Aren't human bodies interesting? I think they are. I'd like to become a surgeon, I think. What classes are you in?"

Sal had no idea what Nico had been through. He didn’t know about any of the things Nico had dealt with his whole life. He wasn’t even sure whether Nico really knew how to fight. He nodded a little, meeting Nico’s eyes and considering. He would definitely take a drunk person over a cannibal, but he still would rather deal with neither. Then again...this was college. He wasn’t under the impression that he wouldn’t run into any drunk people. “Yeah,” he agreed, swinging a little as he nodded. “That’s a relief. Honestly I really didn’t know what to expect, y’know?” Nico was just the only one worried about teens being teens. Sal, too, had been concerned about having a roommate who was nothing like him. Not that he really had anything against alcohol and girls and loud parties and whatever else people his age did, he just would rather they not happen near him, and certainly not in his room. He didn’t know how challenging he’d find his classes, but he was prepared to pull all-nighters to study if need be. He didn’t know about monsters. Ghosts, sure, he’d seen those, but monsters? He had never seen a monster. “Yeah, they were fun. And I knew everyone there so it wasn't weird or anything,” he added. “And I even convinced them to keep the noise down so the neighbors didn’t get mad.” He hoped he could be friends with Nico. He hoped they could find a good routine to settle into. He didn’t want them to end up asking for a different roommate, even if he wouldn’t be upset with Nico if he chose that. “Fair enough,” he continued, nodding a little. “I can see why you’d want that. Anyway, I’m just glad it won’t be anything either of us have to worry about. He noticed the lack of comment on Zuko. He really hoped they would be able to work out their differences...he didn’t want them to fight. Zuko seemed...honestly Sal didn’t know much about him, but he was wiling to give everyone the benefit of the doubt here. This was a whole new world to him and he didn’t want to ruin it by alienating anyone who might just be having a hard time settling in. Still. He wished Zuko had been willing to give any reason at all.

| Xichen | Fourth Floor | Keycard Adventure with Touka | Great. Now he'd gone and made it awkward. He whistled a few notes of a song snippet, just letting go of some nervous energy. "Alright, yeah." He nodded. He offered a smile half self-deprecating, half understanding. "No one ever knows what to say, do they?" "So you realized it was gone at breakfast?" He asked, just to confirm. "Let's look for it between here and there, and if we can't find it we can ask the front desk if someone's turned it in." "Oh- you couldn't grab breakfast without the card- are you hungry? I have snacks in my dorm ro-" He cut off, realizing just how silly that was to say. The whole reason they were out here was because they both couldn't get into their dorm rooms. "Scratch that. For now."

“Oh, wow. You know the area pretty well already, then. All I know is that there’s a Taco Bell a few blocks away.” Newt shrugged, then gave a small smile. “A pet store is a lot more exciting. I’ve never had pets, but I used to go to pet stores all the time to look at some of the animals they had.” He followed Hange from just a few steps behind, already getting excited about helping them with the salamander. He wasn’t sure exactly what they needed at the pet store, but Hange seemed to have it under control. “That’s cool. I’m in engineering, but I might switch to biochemical engineering depending on how things go. I’m taking intro to engineering right now… and calculus… and a couple of my general education requirements.”

It was going to take Nico a long time to open up, if he ever did. These were people who might become friends, but in all likelihood they would probably end up as casual acquaintances. Just people he knew as he tried to get a degree so he could have a somewhat normal life. He had never dreamed he’d even survive long enough to go to college, but here he was, and he wasn’t going to squander the opportunity. Fortunately, it seemed like Sal wasn’t planning on getting in the way of Nico getting his degree. They seemed to have a similar idea of how they wanted to spend their time, and that was good enough for Nico. “I’ve never been great with people,” he admitted, letting himself swing a little bit higher. “I mean… I figured it was probably best I didn’t have a roommate because I didn’t want to get in anyone’s way or ruin anyone else’s college experience, but…” he shrugged, trailing off for a long moment before finally finding the words he was looking for. “I mean obviously you can ask for a new roommate if you end up wanting one, but I’m… grateful that we seem to have… I guess some sort of agreement already that there won’t be a lot of drugs or drinking or bringing girls home.” It was nice to know that not everyone expected college to be like that, even though that was nearly all that was depicted in movies. Sal wasn’t likely to be able to convince Nico to go to a party, even if it was a small one. He could imagine the suite having a party – there were only eight of them, and if they got along, that was fine – but Nico wasn’t sure he’d be able to bring himself to participate even in that. It wasn’t that he was against parties, but the likelihood of people getting a little too close in that situation was higher than Nico was comfortable with. Besides, he was here to get his degree, not necessarily to make friends. If he ended up with friends, that was just an added bonus. He kept that thought to himself – he didn’t want to seem unfriendly, because it wasn’t like he was actively against making friends, it was just… if he thought he was going to make any, he was just getting his hopes up for no reason.

Hange | Pet Shop Adventure | strider |"They call it Taco Bell, but there isn't even a bell inside," noted Hange, swinging their arms as they walked along with their new friend, happy as a clam now that they were on an adventure with someone else. Most of their adventures, no one else wanted to join them on, which was okay, but people were fun to be with. "I like to explore," they explained further. "I've been all around here already - there's a pet store, and some restaurants, and a regular store that doesn't sell any pets." They paused, putting the brakes on their tangent with some difficulty in order to listen to Newt's response. "I like mathematics," they said brightly, remembering what their parents had told them about connecting interests being an important step in making friends. "What are you going to do once you graduate?"

Juuzou wasn’t doing much, really. Just lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling. His phone lay abandoned on the floor, where he’d promptly dropped it when Myrnin had stopped answering him. Myrnin was coming. A small, thrilled smile curled at the boy’s lips as he considered that. Mynrin was coming and he was going to get to finally meet someone. He was excited, too excited to sit still any longer, so he rolled off the bed and caught himself with both feet, then began to pace - or, if not pace, then perhaps skip - around the room. He didn’t quite hear the knock, so he didn’t come towards the door, but he did hear the word and stopped moving, then turned, slowly facing the door. ‘Snack!” He called back, then walked forward and swung the door wide open, grinning and he faced Myrnin. “Come in, come in, I have plenty of snack!”

Touka | keyfinding quest | Cloverleaf |"Ha, dumbass," said Touka reflexively, drawn into Xichen's friendliness enough to drop her guard without exactly meaning to. "Or, uh. Aaaaaaanyways...so the front desk lady doesn't like me." She paused, walking along with Xichen along the path she'd taken to get here in the first place. "So you might have to go in by yourself, or she'll definitely keep trying to make my life a living hell. She might be helpful to you though," she said, shrugging. "Worth a shot."

“There’s the bell on the sign,” Newt replied with a small shrug. “I dunno, maybe they just thought it would be a memorable name? I don’t know how advertisement works.” There was a reason he wasn’t a business major. Actually, multiple reasons, but he didn’t really want to whine about business majors to his new friend, especially when he didn’t know what their opinion would be. It would be pretty stupid to gain a friend and lose them on the same day because of a stupid comment. “That’s cool,” he said instead, letting Hange take the lead on the conversation. He was more than happy to let Hange talk and just… listen to them. “Did the not pet store have anything interesting?” he asked, unplugging his earbuds from his phone and folding them up neatly before sticking them in his pocket. “Hm?” Newt considered that, giving a low hum in the back of his throat. “I’m not really sure,” he admitted with a small shrug. “I’d like to… to try to invent things that help people, but I don’t know how to do that yet. I guess that’s why I’m not sure what engineering to go into…” he glanced back over at Hange, tilting his head. “What about you?”

Hange | major talks | strider |"Mmmm, not really..." said Hange, thinking back to their adventures in the not-petstore. "Mostly things you need, like food and soap and cooking utensils. Ah - they do sell lighters, though!" They smiled turning to Newt in complete certainty that he would find this as exciting as they did. "Inventor," they repeated, looking him over with wide eyes as their brain placed that label mentally over the image of him they had in their head. "I think you would be a good inventor," they decided with a firm nod. "You should definitely do it." They turned in a little circle in response to the question about their major, bleeding off their interest in the subject through their spinning arms. "I'm going to be a surgeon," they told him, still spinning as they continued along the path. "Surgeons get to learn all about how the human body works - it's just a big machine, so engineering and medicine is pretty similar, I think. Everything has to work right or the whole thing breaks down."

“Oh,” Newt replied, nodding seriously, “that’ll probably come in handy eventually.” Probably more useful than a pet store, but then again… Newt was walking to the pet store before he had even heard of the other store, so maybe the pet store would prove more useful. He gave a small smile, glancing at Hange. “Thanks,” he said sincerely. “I hope so… I guess… I’m here so I can learn how to be a good inventor, eventually.” Hange was more upfront than most people Newt had met, and he found he appreciated it. They didn’t seem to be afraid to say what they were thinking, and Newt thought they were probably being genuine when they said things. A tiny smile touched his lips as Hange began spinning. He may not have really understood why they were doing it, but they thought it was probably a good thing. They seemed happy, at least, and that was all Newt cared about. “There’s a lot more of a risk if something in a human body goes wrong,” Newt replied, sounding a little bit concerned. “I don’t know if I’d be good enough at fixing that – you don’t really get that many second chances. But… I think you’ll be good at it.” He gave a firm nod. “At least… if how carefully you’ve taken care of the salamander is any indication.”

Even if Nico never opened up, Sal hoped they could get along. It wasn’t like they ha for be best friends in order to not get on each other’s nerves, right? He thought so, at least. And it seemed Nico probably did, too. Not that he was against becoming good friends, he wasn’t, but it was too early to really tell whether they would even get along. They both just wanted to get a degree and do what they could with their lives, really. Sal listened and nodded, letting his momentum swing him for a long moment as he considered that. “I’m not really worried about you ruining anything,” he told the other boy, giving him a quick glance. “Roommates are supposed to coexist anyway, it’s not like I’m expecting to never notice you’re living there too, you know? Like you’re gonna notice I’m there. Nothing wrong with that.” He fell silent again. Then he gave a nod, tilting his head just a little as he looked at Nico. “None of the above, most likely,” he agreed. “Don’t want to try alcohol or drugs and I’ll let you know if I start dating someone and invite them, so if there’s any boys or girls or anyone else in our room without warning, they probably broke in.” He wasn’t sure whether he was hoping for a party or not. Truthfully, he would probably go if they invited him, but he also wouldn’t mind some quiet while he got used to things here. He didn’t mind if Nico wasn’t interested, really. It was his call, his decision whether he wanted to or not. It wasn’t like anyone was going to drag him of he decided he wasn’t really into parties of any sort. Was he here to only get his degree? Or was he here to make friends, too? Honestly...he thought he was just here to try and find himself a little bit. To figure out that he wanted to do with his life and maybe even to find some people he could be close with. He wanted to see where life took him, and college seemed a good first step to that.

“I’m really good at disappearing,” Nico deadpanned, then glanced at Sal. There was the trace of a smile on his face, but it might have been hard to see for someone who didn’t know Nico very well. He wasn’t really joking – he was used to spending time in the shadows, unseen except when he wanted to be. He lifted his hand off the chain of the swing, eyes narrowing as he checked to make sure it was still opaque. He had gotten better at using his powers only when necessary, but he still had nightmares about turning to shadow. And there were times when he didn’t feel all there. He wouldn’t be able to hold on long if he had to spend too much time in the shadows to make Sal feel more comfortable. It wasn’t an option. “But… I’m glad to hear you don’t mind my being there. In theory. I guess we’ll figure out soon enough if either of us minds.” He hoped they didn’t. It didn’t seem likely that Nico would be able to find another roommate as understanding as Sal was, if things didn’t work out. And he had a feeling that all of the singles were already taken. He really wasn’t going to like Zuko very much if it turned out that he and Sal didn’t turn out to be good roommates. What reason did Zuko have to need the single? Nico had a hard time imagining a better reason than either he or Sal had. “And I mean… like I said, any time you need me out of the room so you can take off your prosthetic or whatever, just tell me. No matter what time it is.” The swings made quiet creaking noises, audible only when there was a lull in the conversation. Nico didn’t mind it. It was… well… it was like a conversation in and of itself, the noises getting a bit louder when he was near Sal, when he could hear the creaking of Sal’s as well as his own… then again, perhaps he was reading too much into silence. And then there wasn’t silence anymore and Sal’s words processes and Nico stopped kicking, letting the swing slow to a halt. Boys or girls. Right, okay. He shouldn’t have been surprised, but… he was. The world was different now than it had ever been before. He breathed out, trying to get his mind to start working again. Nobody now was supposed to bat an eye, but it still made Nico’s heart constrict in his chest and look around to make sure nobody was there to have overheard. “I’ll keep an eye out for intruders, then,” he managed, pleased that his voice came out sounding mostly not strangled.

“I wish I was good at disappearing sometimes,” Sal replied, shaking his head a little. He wasn’t sure whether Nico was joking or not...he didn’t know him well enough to tell. So it was best not to laugh, unless he was sure. He did notice Nico checking his hand...almost as if he was actually making sure he didn’t disappear. Sal glanced at him, suddenly wondering whether he might be a ghost...no, that wasn’t likely. You could tell people were ghosts, because they were see through and floaty. Nico was perfectly solid and opaque. He shook his head a little. He needed to get over how strange his life had been up to now...it wasn’t that way anymore, college was going to be perfectly normal and paranormal activity free. He nodded a little. He couldn’t promise he wouldn’t mind Nico, just like Nico couldn’t promise he wouldn’t mind Sal. They’d just met, after all...they knew almost nothing about each other. He wasn’t going to judge Zuko for wanting the single. Not when he didn’t know the reason, or why the other boy had been so unwilling to talk about it. Maybe...maybe Sal would drop by sometime. Not to invade his privacy, just to say hi, maybe get to know him a little better. He wasn’t an extrovert by any means, but he wasn’t nearly as introverted as a few of the others seemed to be. Maybe if he could get them to talk a little, he could smooth things over before they even became a problem. Peacekeeping. It seemed to follow him everywhere. He blinked, glancing quickly at Nico as he spoke...sounding a bit...well. Uncomfortable? Sal ran over the conversation in his head, trying or see what might have...oh. Oh no. There was no need to jump to conclusions or judge anyone just yet...he hadn’t even fully intended to come out on their first meeting, he was just used to being around his friends and family only, and no one cared what he said there. One of his best friends had a boyfriend, after all, if anyone was going to get judged, it was him. And okay, Sal had never dated before, but he was used to it being an option...and he technically knew that, if he happened to fall for a guy or a non-binary person, he might have to be careful, but...then again, with his style? He was probably going to get judged no matter who he ended up dating. Then again, not everyone was as lucky with the people they found themselves surrounded with. His dad may not have been winning any awards, but he had never shown any sign of caring who Sal might date. Nico might not have been so fortunate. He realized suddenly that an awkward pause had settled between them as he’d been thinking. Well...he refused to make any snap judgments. He liked Nico so far. He would just...have to be a little more careful with what he said until he figured out more. “So, what’s your first class?” He asked, and he was pleasantly surprised to discover his voice was just as light and friendly as it had been before.

“Useful skill to have,” Nico returned, allowing his tone to drift into something a little bit more serious. He glanced at Sal for a long moment, then managed what he hoped came across as a friendly smile. “I don’t… know you, obviously… but if first impressions serve, I think you probably can’t disappear for good reasons. I know… it’s nice to be able to escape people’s notice and attention, but… I guess what I’m trying to say is you have my attention because you’re nice. And because you’ve been genuine and… and generous since we met, even if it was only like… what? Fifteen minutes ago?” He fell silent, letting himself swing through the air for a few more moments. “I don’t usually make snap judgements,” he added after a long moment, letting himself glance back in Sal’s direction. “They’re not usually very accurate. But… I also don’t like a lot of people. Through no fault of their own, it’s just… who I am. So… I guess do with that what you will.” Nico lifted a hand from the chain of the swing, awkwardly rubbing at his neck. He wasn’t used to being open, and he didn’t like making himself vulnerable. He felt safer in his shell, where people feared him but didn’t dare look closer. He isolated himself for multiple reasons. Because he didn’t want to burden people with who he was, because he didn’t want to have to hide what he had gone through from people who cared… because he was afraid of being known… there were any number of things. But something about talking to Sal made him want to open up, at least a little bit. He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. It was dangerous, he knew, sharing yourself like that, but… he didn’t think Sal would use it against him, so long as he was careful exactly what he shared. Nico’s hand dropped down to his side and he stared at the sky, tense as he waited for Sal to say something. He hadn’t meant to freeze up, but he was still astounded by how different things were, now. Still not used to the fact that he could be open and free about who he loved. Every time he tried to even consider telling people… there was that voice in the back of his head, the voice that still sounded like Bianca, terrified about what would happen to her baby brother if he let slip that he didn’t love normally. Bianca hadn’t minded. She’d been too young to mind, really. But not too young to know that there were consequences. Nico grit his teeth, trying to shake the thought off. Now was when he was supposed to say something supportive to show Sal that he didn’t care who he liked: that it didn’t actually matter. But the words wouldn’t come. I’ll defend you at your trial, wasn’t exactly what you were supposed to say when someone came out to you. But did this even count? Nico groaned, burying his head in his palms. Which probably only made the whole reaction more obvious… “Physics,” he managed softly, trying to make his voice sound not quite as tiny. “Then Ancient Greek. What… about you?”

Then he completely stepped into the room, drawn by hunger more than anything. When the door was closed behind him and he'd properly turned back to Juuzou, he clapped his hands together, looking delighted look on his face. "Thank you for doing this! It is quite kind. I was very hungry undead." He looked the other student and tilted his head slightly. As if mildly waiting. He took a glance around the room, highly tempted to comment on the décor. But he was too hungry to be a good conversation partner. "Nice posters," he offered. Then he hurriedly drew in on Juuzou to bite him.

Juuzou gave a wide smile, ecstatic to be told he was kind. “I like snacks, too,” he told the other student, nodding a little. He didn’t know what Myrnin was doing, really, but he figured he was probably just waiting for Juuzou to pull out the snacks. Maybe they could even hang out together for a bit...isn’t that how you made friends? Juuzou had never been that anxious to make friends, but he was trying to be normal and have a normal college experience, so maybe this was the first step. He was about to turn to grab the snacks he’d brought when Myrnin moved, closing the distance and… His mouth slid a little bit open in surprise as the vampire bit him, and he didn’t move, everything in him going very still in shock. He didn’t understand what had just happened...he had been about to share his snacks, right...so, why…?

Sal blinked, caught off guard. Nico seemed to really mean what he was saying, too...he wasn’t just complimenting Sal for no reason. It was unexpected, definitely, but not unwelcome, and Sal felt himself smile even though he knew it couldn’t be seen. That was one thing he didn’t like much about his prosthetic...it was just one expression. He couldn’t smile at people. Even if it was kind of nice sometimes, that people couldn’t read his face...it was times like this when he thought having a normal face might be kind of nice. A smile that wouldn’t make people wince and look away...yeah. Sometimes he thought he would have liked that. He nodded after a moment, taking that in. Nico didn’t seem the type to compliment people often, or...to be that open. He said himself that he didn’t usually like people, after all. What did that mean? Did Sal really come across as that nice? He knew that wasn’t a universal opinion, but then...no one could be liked by everyone. And he thought he probably cared more what Nico thought than he did a bully, anyway. Not that he fully believed the bullies had hated him. Even when it was happening, he had come to the conclusion that it wasn’t actually about him, not really. It was about them. That helped take some of the sting out of their words. But...this actually was about him. Nico was being genuine, and Sal felt...seen. Not in the unpleasant way that came in the stares he got because of his style and his prosthetic. But in the warm, comfortable way of a friend getting you a gift you actually like. “Thanks, Nico,” he murmured, his voice giving away how touched he felt. “I’m glad I come off that way. I feel like I intimidate people sometimes, because of...well, y’know.” He didn’t need to reach up and touch his prosthetic, but he did it anyway. “And it’s just worse if they ever see me without it, so...I’m kinda stuck. But thanks. That means a lot to me.” He couldn’t quite reconcile Nico’s vibes to homophobia. He just couldn’t make the two fit in his head. And he thought he was pretty good at knowing people’s vibes, so...no judgement yet. He couldn’t know anything for sure, and Nico hadn’t actually said or done anything, so it was probably fine, he was just reading too much into it. He jumped a little as Nico groaned, and shot him a slightly worried look. Was he alright? The persistent little voice in the back of Sal’s head told him that Nico was groaning because he couldn’t believe his bad luck, but again, the vibes just didn’t fit. Sal didn’t want to think the voice was right. So he ignored it, determined not to make any assumptions. “Math,” he said, swinging a little higher. “Which I’m actually good at, so, yay.”

Nico didn’t compliment people easily. It wasn’t necessarily intentional, just that… he didn’t tend to say things he didn’t mean, and there weren’t very many people he knew that really deserved to be complimented. Sal, though… Sal was nice. He didn’t need to be. He didn’t need to be, but he was, and that made a huge difference to Nico. He took in a deep breath – it wouldn’t do to get attached to Sal too quickly. They could be friends, maybe, but he wasn’t going to count on that. If he got attached and Sal decided he hated, him, actually… well, it wouldn’t be the first time that had happened to Nico, though he wasn’t going to bring that up now, not when they were just beginning to get to know each other. He didn’t want to give a bad first impression, though he wasn’t sure there was any other sort of impression he was capable of making. If Sal didn’t like him yet, though, he was much better at hiding it than most people in Nico’s life. “I know a little about intimidating people,” Nico replied quietly, shaking his head. “Actually… most of how people see me is by intimidation.” He didn’t say that it was mostly his fault. He didn’t’ do anything to stop people from seeing him as just the Son of Hades – in fact, he’d staked a good deal of his comfort and safety on the reputation that had begun to build around him. “Of course… I guess that’s probably a lot more intentional than people being intimidated by you because of your prosthetic, but…” Was he talking too much? If he was… he sighed, then blazed forward. If he was digging himself a hole, he might as well continue. A hole could turn into a tunnel very easily, if he dug in the right direction – which was an unusually optimistic thought for him. “For what it’s worth, I don’t think the prosthetic is intimidating. And anyone who isn’t willing to look past it probably isn’t worth getting to know anyway. They sound like assholes.” He wasn’t going to ask what was under the prosthetic, but… if it was bad enough that Sal didn’t want people to see it… if it was intimidating… Nico could take a guess. And he wasn’t ever going to make Sal take it off if he didn’t want to. That was one of his secrets. Nico had plenty of his own. At least Sal seemed to gloss over Nico’s reaction. He realized just a little bit too late that it could have been taken as homophobia, but he couldn’t really backtrack now unless he wanted to out himself, and… he didn’t think he was quite ready for that, even if Sal was going to be understanding. “I hate math,” he said automatically, then shook his head a little. “Sorry, that was… a little blunt. I just mean… I think it’s cool that some people can do math well. I have a lot of respect for people who can, but… it’s not me. Maybe… you can try to walk me through stuff you get confused on, though. If you can explain math to me, you definitely know it well enough to pass a test.”

L knew he probably couldn’t actually prove his theory. The why was always the hardest part to figure out, since human motivations were complicated and often hidden, either on purpose or accidentally. Especially people like criminals who often had a lot to hide. The kind of people L went after...they were very complicated people with very complicated motives. He didn’t pretend to fully understand them all. Then again, everyone was like that. L himself was complicated, his motives far from straightforward. Orpheus...Orpheus. He glanced at his companion, eyes softening. Orpheus was complicated in his own way, but not like L and the criminals were. He never said it out loud, he knew Orpheus would protest, but he thought Orpheus was the better of the two of them. He considered his options as Orpheus braided his hair. He could go after the case, of course. Continue working on it, he was close, very close. But did he want that when he could also spend that time watching something with Orpheus and helping him relax after a long day? He glanced sideways at him, trying to read his expression. “I can multitask,” he decided after a moment. “I do that most of the time anyway. I can figure out this case, and you can tell me about your day, if you want. Or talk about anything. I don’t mind.” He wasn’t really aware of how limited their time might be. He hadn’t fully realized that he wouldn’t be able to just drop by anytime anymore. He was glad Orpheus had gotten this job, he knew he would be good at it, but he was definitely going to miss the days when he didn’t have to make plans before coming over. But he wasn’t thinking that now. He was just happy to be here. “What would you like to do?” He asked, settling in a little closer.

Orpheus managed a small smile, though he wanted L to know that he didn’t mind if he wanted to work on the case. He wasn’t thinking about how things would change when Xichen moved in. His roommate the year before hadn’t much liked that L popped in as often as he did, but that hadn’t stopped L. The issue here wasn’t really Xichen, it was that Orpheus had to be on duty some nights, and when he wasn’t, he didn’t want to disturb Xichen too much. It might’ve been easier to get a single in another building that only needed one RA per floor, but that felt like a lot of responsibility. He would much rather do the job with Xichen than have to do it alone just so he had a little bit more time with L. Deep down, he wished L had made a bit of a better first impression on Xichen… it might’ve been a little easier to ask permission for L to stay over more often if their first interaction hadn’t been L hacking into a private group chat. Ah… too late to change that now, and he knew L hadn’t meant any harm by it. Xichen also knew that L hadn’t meant any harm by it, though it had to have been rather jarring… he pushed the thought away. He would deal with Xichen when he got there. For now, the room was theirs, and Orpheus found he was grateful that L was willing to multitask. “Mm,” he considered softly, moving on to another small section of L’s hair. “I don’t want to spend the time we have together complaining. You already know I’m nervous about some of the residents, but… others of them seem nice. I’m hoping it was just… bad first impressions over text.” He didn’t mention he got the sense that some of the residents didn’t like him much. It was only the first day – it was far more likely they didn’t have an opinion of him at all yet.

Sal liked Nico so far. He didn’t know him, maybe, but he liked him anyway. He seemed...genuine. And nice. And he didn’t have to be nice, he didn’t even know Sal, but he was. If Sal didn’t need to be nice, Nico didn’t either, and here they were, being nice to each other. If only all interactions went this smoothly. The thing was...Sal didn’t really hate people. Maybe he didn’t like everyone, maybe he had some people he disliked, even, but hate? No, not hate. He had a bad habit of getting in people’s heads, and once he was there, it was entirely too easy to see their perspective and feel for them. Which sabotaged hatred quite nicely. So Nico probably didn’t need to worry about that happening, unless he turned out to be a heartless murderer or something. And if first impressions were any indication, he was going to go beyond not hating him, all the way to liking him. He listened as Nico spoke, and gave a tiny nod. “Thanks,” he murmured. “I don’t really like being intimidating. I guess...you can probably tell that much.” He gestured at his electric blue pigtails, which were decidedly not intimidating. “But you’re right, and it’s not a big deal, really. And hey, you’re not intimidated, so that’s good.” He had met people in the past who didn’t mind it, but he had also met people who had, so he never knew what to expect when he first met someone. They might care, or they might not. He hadn’t yet met someone who wasn’t curious about it, but that was to be expected. Humans were like that. Sal couldn’t hold curiosity against anyone, even if he did get tired of the intrusive questions sometimes. It was like the moment you were different, you became something to talk at instead of to. And it did get a little old after a while. Nico had been incredibly respectful so far. He hadn’t asked why Sal was wearing a prosthetic face, or what was under it. He was actually treating Sal like a whole person. It was...nice. He blinked, then gave a small laugh at Nico’s reaction. “Yeah, I guess a lot of people hate math,” he agreed, swinging a little higher. “But thanks. I bet college math is going to be harder than high school math, but I like the equations...they make sense to me. Now I just need art to work for me, and then I’ll be all set.” He felt oddly touched by the offer. Nico didn’t have to offer to help with a class he wasn’t even in, but he had, and not only that, it actually sounded helpful. “I may take you up on that,” he added, glancing at Nico. “If you don’t mind. Teaching is supposed to be the best way to learn.”

Myrnin didn't seem to notice Juuzou's surprised look - why would he, never mind the way he'd have to turn his head to do so wasn't really practical for what he was doing. But it was, as he said, the snack he was looking for. He didn't seem inclined to pull away either as he drew blood from Juuzou's body. Unless Juuzou interfered, he'd likely remain that way for quite a bit. At least enough to stop the pounding hunger in his chest. The fact that Juuzou has misunderstood didn't even cross his mind. (I figured I'd leave a chance for him to respond. )

“At least… if how carefully you’ve taken care of the salamander is any indication.” Hange | pet store bros | strider |Hange paused in their spinning to give Newt a wide grin, excitement lighting up their whole face at his words. "Oh yes, the human body is very complicated," they agreed. "Lots to get wrong - I think that can be exciting, though. We're just machines, after all - just very, very complicated machines. And I'm good at figuring out how machines break. How they work. My therapist says it's part of my autism - I'm specially interested in things like that." They paused, looking down at the salamander in their hands, a softer look in their eye. "Do you think so? I wondered if I ought to take him away from his home...but I don't think salamanders get homesick. Their brains aren't big enough, so I think it will be fine if I get the humidity and temperatures right. I think if I were a salamander, I'd like to live in a glass house where no one could get inside and eat me."

Nico actually managed a smile as Sal gestured to the pigtails. They were, as Sal had implied, far from the most intimidating things he had ever seen. “I don’t know,” he replied, voice light, “With hair like that you’re probably a soccer mom’s worst nightmare. I mean… blue hair and not traditionally masculine? Pretty scary.” Nico knew he wasn’t the best at making jokes, but he couldn’t help but hope that this one managed to land. He wanted his new roommate to like him. He wanted to make a good first impression, he wanted this to be a fresh start, even if he did have to find a way to take care of the monsters that would inevitably follow him here. Hopefully he’d be able to manage that and classes and everything else… he really didn’t want to be forced to drop out after everything he had put into getting here int he first place. He glanced at Sal a little bit nervously, hoping the joke landed. Hoping that he hadn’t overstepped because he didn’t really know how to be friends with people. It certainly wasn’t as easy as some people made it seem. “I’m pretty good at art,” Nico murmured, sounding a little less hesitant now that the conversation was drifting somewhere a little bit more comfortable. “I want to add it as a minor, if I can make my schedule work out. I don’t… know if that’s possible, though. Point is… if you ever want help with art, that’s something I can probably actually help with.” He forced himself to relax, swinging just a little bit higher. “I don’t tend to say things I don’t mean,” Nico added after a moment, daring a glance at Sal. “You’re welcome to take me up on my offer at any time, if you want to. Or not at all, if you’d prefer.”

Newt was a little bit surprised by how open Hange was about things, but not in a bad way. It was just that most of the people in his life didn’t talk about mental health at all, but here Hange was, not only openly talking about their therapist, but also being autistic. A glimmer of respect rose up in Newt’s chest, but he didn’t give voice to it, just nodded as he listened. “In that case,” he murmured, pulling open the door to the pet shop, “I think you’re really going to be a good surgeon. Especially if you can figure things out without taking them apart… when I was little my parents used to get really frustrated with me because I would take apart their clocks and stuff to try to see how they worked, only it took me a while to figure out how to put them back together, so they weren’t really in one functional piece by the time they were needed.” Newt turned his attention back to the salamander, looking at it for a long moment before he nodded. “Don’t most animals in captivity have a longer lifespan than wild ones? I mean… if it were endangered or something I’d say you should probably put it back, but… taking one to keep safe if it’s not necessary to help the species live a little longer… that just seems like a genuinely nice thing to do for it.”

Hange | serious time | strider |Hange took in what Newt was saying, but they fell silent for a moment, letting it run through their mind once, twice, and a third time until they'd pulled all the information from it and worked it through their mind. "I think people get frustrated with us because they don't understand how we work," they said, gently placing the salamander back in their pocket. "I'm sorry your parents didn't try to understand. And..." They pursed their lips, pushing their glasses a little further up on their face. "Thanks for not underestimating me. Even though I don't talk like a college person."

Newt searched Hange’s expression, wanting to take in everything they had to say. Wanting to make sure they felt heard, because he hadn’t really expected to find a friend this quickly, but here they were, and Newt didn’t want to mess this up. He gave a small smile, hugging his arms to his chest. “You don’t need to sound like a college person to still be smart or worth knowing. Actually, I think sounding super academic is… not what people say it is, because then most people don’t understand you anyway. Point is, you sound smart and you seem nice, and that’s all that matters to me.” A thin smile pulled at his features at that – he didn’t know if he had come close to saying the right thing, but he had said what he felt, so… it had to be close enough.

L | Room 4C | strider
Would Xichen’s presence stop L from showing up without warning? Probably not. It hadn’t before, after all, and he wasn’t really aware that Orpheus’ previous roommate had had a problem with his appearances. Orpheus knew him, though. If he wanted something, he knew how specific he needed to be. L wasn’t likely to pick up on annoyance from anyone else, especially not Xichen, who he hadn’t ever met before and therefore wasn’t practiced at reading. He could read Orpheus because he’d had a long time to practice. Hopefully...hopefully he wouldn’t cause too much trouble. He also wasn’t really aware that he’d made a bad first impression. They hadn’t seemed angry, or told him to leave. Xichen has offered to make a separate group chat, but that hadn been necessary, since they already had one, and L had merely wanted to meet Orpheus’ friend. He’d wanted to say hi, and do the social thing people kept saying he needed more of. He didn’t quite know if had backfired, and no one had told him. “Yes, that’s understandable,” he agreed, considering. “It’s hard to make a good first impression. People tend to misunderstand your intent, though...I don’t think I’ve ever brought up cannibalism on a first meeting.” He paused. “No, I did once, never mind. It was relevant to the conversation though. And I don’t think anyone minded.” Not that he would know, but no one had told him they minded.
