L wasn’t intending to think about the case, but Orpheus had mentioned it and given him the pieces to work with and he had a hard time making himself step back, well...ever. He was close, he could feel it. All he needed was that little spark of inspiration to tie the pieces together again. All he needed was that moment where it all clicked into place. “The bank,” he explained, lifting a finger. “If they were attempting to throw me off, what better way than to create a case I can’t ignore? Which means they know my rules, which means they know me, which narrows it down a lot.” And makes it personal. He didn’t mention that part. If they knew his rules, then they knew how to get to him. Putting him in danger, probably. But he was always in danger, so he didn’t see the need to start panicking just yet. He wasn’t Orpheus. He wasn’t as good a person. He solved puzzles because they interested him, he broke some laws when it was convenient, he did what was necessary to close the case. Orpheus wouldn’t have done some of the things he had done, he knew. Yet...Orpheus seemed to have an influence on him. He found himself wondering what Orpheus would do in situations where he needed to make a choice, and often these days, that was what he ended up doing. “I am onto something,” he confirmed, tilting his head to look at Orpheus. “This case is almost closing itself.” He didn’t think about Xichen’s sleep schedule. Didn’t occur to him that some people might have one of those. He was used to himself, and Orpheus, neither of whose even made the attempt. He also wasn’t thinking about this being the last night they might have to themselves for a while. If he had, he might have been sad. Instead, he focused on Orpheus, expression serious. “You’re more important than my case,” he said simply. “And you’ve had a frustrating day. I want to do whatever you want.”

“Ah,” Orpheus replied, nodding a little bit as L spoke. It made sense, he supposed, though he didn’t know how L could possibly prove that until he caught the people responsible. Even then, there was really no way to prove why they did what they did, even if they confessed. He wasn’t sure whether or not he hoped the bank robbery was a red herring. On one hand, it would probably make the case easier for L to solve. On the other hand, if someone knew L well enough to try to throw him off like that, they probably knew him well enough to know how to put him in danger. The thought made Orpheus uncomfortable, though he knew L had been in danger before. Was near constantly in danger, actually. He had accepted that the danger was just part of L’s life. That didn’t mean that he had to like it. “If you’re that close,” Orpheus murmured, looking up from the braid he was working on, “you can finish. I really don’t mind.” He knew a case like this could take L anywhere from seconds to days to unravel. Very rarely longer than that. He didn’t have a few days, but they did have a few hours. “Although… if figuring it out means you’re going to rush out of here, selfishly I wouldn’t mind if you waited.” He didn’t see why figuring it out would make L leave, as he could contact Watari from here, but… it was a possibility. And Orpheus didn’t want to lose out on any of the time he had with L. He didn’t know if L knew that their time was probably a bit limited. He did plan on inviting L over whenever he had overnight on-call duty, if only so he could tell Xichen not to stay up and wreck his sleep schedule to keep him company (he knew Xichen well enough to foresee that as an issue). Also because it was hard to fall asleep when L was right there to talk to. “I know,” he said after a moment, locking his fingers between L’s. “Spending time with you in any way possible is worth it to me.”

Myrnin | Juuzou's room | ®Hawkpath®Hunger pushed him toward Juuzou's room. As for how he knew where it was, it wasn't that hard. He could track smells easily enough and the fact of the matter was, Juuzou seemed ... unique. So Myrnin didn't find much trouble in reaching the door and oh so lightly knocking on it. He wasn't sure how closely rooms were watched. Weeeeeeeeell ... Xichen was supposed to be asleep, so everything should be okay. He assumed so. And at any rate, they were supposed to feed him and he had seen proper food everywhere and he wasn't getting any of it. So his solution was very obviously going to be to search it out himself. So here he was, mouth pressed against the door, going, "Heeeeello? I am here for snack!"

Nico may not have been easy to be friends with, but Sal didn’t think they’d have too much of a problem. At least, from what he could tell of Nico, they seemed like they at least had a shot at becoming friends, if Nico wanted that. Nico didn’t have to be exactly how everyone else was for Sal to like him. He didn’t have to be “easy to get along with”. As long as he wasn’t mean, Sal was likely to think he was alright. And so far, he’d been nothing but kind. Normal was overrated. It was a bad descriptor of humans. Humans were not normal because there was no norm for being human. Anyone who said they were normal...well. He wasn’t willing to judge them too harshly, but he didn’t understand them. He hoped he would be a good roommate. He didn’t know what that meant but he would try his hardest to achieve it. He was fairly sure as long as he didn’t leave a mess or invade Nico’s space, it would be alright. “Yeah, that’s fair.” Sal nodded a little. “I’d take a drunk person over a cannibal any day. Having had experience with both, though, I’d rather steer clear of either one.” He swung a little, considering the sky. It sounded like Nico had been in his share of fights. Or at least that he knew how to hold his own in one, however he had learned it. Sal...Sal wasn’t a fighter. He knew some martial arts but he was far better at diffusing conflict before it got that far. He glanced at Nico, blinking a little. “Some college kids at my apartments held parties all the time,” he answered thoughtfully. “They weren’t bad. Just friends hanging out doing things. They even invited me after a while. It was cool.” He didn’t mention he hoped that something similar might happen with the group they had here. He wasn’t sure about all of them, but there was yet to be anyone he actively disliked. That was a step right? He hesitated, then swung himself a little more, still looking at the sky. “My family has a bad history with alcohol. I don’t wanna risk it, y’know? So I just don’t drink anything.” He let himself slow a little, glancing at Nico, blue eyes searching as the other boy continued. “Yeah, I get that.” He agreed. “Some people are way different over text. I want to meet everyone though, and hopefully get a feel for them. I know Zuko hasn’t said much but I actually kind of like him so far? He seems cool.”

Nico had never really been in a normal fight. He knew how to end fights when he was allowed to kill his opponent, but a normal fight without weapons? He would probably fare better than most people, but that didn’t mean he really knew what he was doing. “I’ve experienced drunk people too,” Nico admitted after a moment, giving a small shrug. “Don’t know if they’re worse than cannibals in practice, but… they’re not great.” He turned his head, searching Sal’s gaze for a long moment. “I guess neither of us has to worry about the other trying to smuggle alcohol in the room, then,” he said after a moment, giving a tentative smile. He had been worried about a lot of things that might come with having a roommate, but most of all he was worried about them just being a normal teenager. Bringing girls home, smuggling alcohol in… anything that might highlight how different Nico was. Sal… Sal seemed different, too. Not in the same ways (Nico didn’t think anyone could be different in the same way as him, but that was a different story), but still both different. Nico didn’t think he’d have to worry about judgement, which was a relief. If they stayed together long enough… eventually there would be a monster attack. Eventually, he might need to explain to Sal part of what made him different from other people. He just hoped that Sal couldn’t see through the Mist. Then he would really need to find a convenient excuse for the constant monster attacks. Either way, Nico would probably need to spend some time teaching Sal to defend himself if wasn’t familiar with battle already. Hopefully, Sal wouldn’t think it too weird. “Small parties with friends don’t seem that bad,” Nico conceded, though he decided not to mention the fact that you sort of needed friends for that to work. Maybe Nico would find friends here. Maybe, if things went well, he might even end up being friends with Sal. He fell silent as Sal went on, looking at the ground for a very long moment. “Right,” he said after a long pause, “that makes sense. Well… I promise I won’t pressure you to drink or anything. I don’t… really want to try it, either. I’d prefer to have my wits about me whenever possible, I guess.” He didn’t respond to Sal’s comment about Zuko. He was willing to give the other boy the benefit of the doubt, but he wasn’t going to change his mind about the fact it was rude of Zuko not to provide any explanation whatsoever about why he deserved the single. It would be a lot easier to handle monster attacks if Nico had gotten the single… he shook the thought away. He didn’t want to start out a relationship with an unfounded grudge.

Touka | locked out...............again | @ anyone
"Piece of shit!"
Touka slammed her foot into the door labeled 4A, temper flying outward and failing to send the object crashing down into her dorm room like she'd wanted it do. And now her foot hurt. And she was still locked out.
She could not go to the RAs about this after she'd already gotten locked out once, and she'd rather tear her arms off than talk to that bougie front desk lady again. She already felt out of place here, with her patched-up backpack and Goodwill shoes. She didn't need some rich lady looking down her nose on top of it.
"Well, maybe if your clumsy ass hadn't dropped the key somewhere..." she mumbled to herself, pressing her head against the door in defeat and allowing herself to wallow in it for a moment.

Hange | having a great time | @ anyone |
Between the sun shining through the clouds, the bright green grass of the quad, and the birdsong cutting through the air, Hange Zoe was having an excellent day. They had awakened to find their new roommate missing, and so, with no fear of disturbing him, they had decided to go for a walk.
They wandered down the pathway, arms extended straight out from their sides, fingers spread to catch the breeze as they walked, slowly spinning in circles as they went to better feel the fresh air on their face. If there had been snow to make footprints, theirs would have been a progressing spiral, leading back from where they'd started.
They knew why Dad and Papa had been worried about them here. There were a lot of rules - not that they weren't good at rules. Ok, they weren't good at rules. Especially confusing ones. And okay, most rules were confusing. But they would be fine! The people here were nice, especially Myrnin, and the Super College Not-Boss people hadn't yelled when they'd broken the window screen. So everything was going to be fine.

| Lan Xichen | 4th Floor Hallway | Xichen padded down the hallway to his dorm room, carrying a laundry basket of clothes- unfolded and just tossed in. He had class later today, and a homework assignment to work on- he'd just finish it later. He stopped outside his door and set down the basket. He reached for his pocket to grab his keycard and then froze. Oh shit. He quickly patted his other pants pocket, but he was quick to discover that he had forgotten to grab his keycard. Not a good look... He told himself. He was pretty sure that Orpheus had not returned in the time it had taken him to go to the laundry room and come back but, hoping against all hope, he knocked on the door. "Orpheus?" No answer. He heard someone else in the hallway and looked over. Touka was leaning against her own door, looking to be in a similar predicament. "Hey." He greeted, a bit of an ironic smile on his face at the situation they both found themselves in. "You're locked out too?"

At the sound of a voice, Touka looked up, jolted out of her misery session by the sight of someone else standing in the hallway, apparently in the same bind she was.
What was that saying about misery and company? Because suddenly, she was feeling a whole lot better about the whole situation.
"Yup," she confirmed, turning to lean with her back to the wall so she could see him, arms crossed. "Since this morning. Was hoping I'd figure out where the hell I left it, but....eh. No dice." She paused, tilting her head. She didn't recognize who she was talking to, so she hadn't met him yet. At least not in person.
"So, you pissed off the RAs yet?" she asked jokingly, trying to lead with something to lighten the mood.

| Lan Xichen | 4th Floor Hallway | Xichen set his laundry basket down in front of the door, since he wasn't opening it any time soon. Worst case scenario, he just got back inside when Orpheus got back. He turned, seeing the other student in front of the single room. Touka, if he remembered correctly. "Oof, lost it, huh? I just left mine in the room. Have you checked all the places you've been? Any chance it might still be in the room somewhere?" He asked, mind automatically going to the standard "lost keycard" questions. "Well, I'm certainly not happy with myself for forgetting my keycard, so yes." Xichen responded with a lighthearted smile- hoping Touka wouldn't feel too embarrassed about not realizing he was an RA.

It had been a halfway decent morning. Not that Newt was surprised – it was fall, and the weather was still nice, and he didn’t even have class until the afternoon. Which meant it was the perfect time to go for a run and explore campus. He still needed to explore where some of his classes were, because he didn’t recognize the building codes, but he figured now would be as good a time as any to explore a little bit. There weren’t that many people up and about. He didn’t have to weave to avoid that many of them, and there didn’t seem to be anybody who seemed weirded out by the fact that he was running through the main parts of campus. He was on his way back to the dorm when he noticed someone walking, spinning to catch the feeling of the fresh air. He thought he had seen them before. In class? It was possible, but everyone’s face had sort of been a blur in his first class the day before, and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to pick anyone from that lecture out of a crowd. “Hey,” he said, running up besides them and slowing to a halt, making sure to give them enough space to keep spinning, if they wanted. “You… live on my floor, don’t you?”

Hange | Doing the Social | strider |Hange, as usual, wasn't very sure what they'd said that was funny, but they were pleased that their new friend seemed happy. "Newt," they repeated, thinking that over for a moment. "A newt is a salamander - your parents named you after a semi-terrestrial salamander." They laughed, conjuring up a picture in their mind of the boy in front of them growing gills and flopping into the nearby pond. They ignored his question, thinking it to be a hypothetical, and smiled big at him, offering him a small salamander they'd had in their pocket since earlier that morning. "Come sit down, you'll be able to see it better."

Newt’s brows raised for just a moment, then dipped his head in acknowledgement. “They named me after Sir Isaac Newton, actually,” he replied, stretching his arms for a moment before looking back at Hange. “I always thought it would be cooler to be named after the amphibian.” His eyes widened at the sight of what Hange pulled out of their pocket. “Woah,” he managed quietly, not hesitating for even a moment before he came and sat down besides Hange. “I’ve only seen a couple salamanders before,” he admitted, shaking his head. “At least… in the wild. I’ve seen plenty in zoos and stuff. Where’d you find this little guy?”

Hange | s a l a m a n d e r | strider |"I like Sir Isaac Newton," replied Hange, shifting focus easily. "I think it would be more fun to be named after the amphibian, too. People aren't as interesting as amphibians, because they don't start out as tadpoles." As he sat down next to them, they smiled even wider, and held the salamander up to their face so the both of them could get a better look at it. As salamanders go, they thought it was an impressive one - it was pretty big, and black with yellow stripes - both colors they liked. Yes, this was a good salamander. "It was under the log that's in the trees next to our building," they explained, looking between Newt and the salamander as they explained. "Salamanders don't like to be dry, so they go under things where it's wet. If you find a wet place that's out of the sun, you might find one."

“I liked Sir Isaac Newton too until my calculus class decided to assign sixty problems on the first day,” Newt replied, giving a small laugh. “At least salamanders don’t make you focus on complex integrations.” He met Hange’s eyes for a moment before he shifted his gaze towards the salamander. “And yeah, the human life cycle is a bit more boring, I guess.” He had to admit the salamander was pretty cool. It was bigger than he thought they tended to get, and it almost seemed to be looking at the two of them. He supposed he’d also be looking at the giant things that had scooped him up out of his home if he were the salamander, but… that was beside the point. “Are you gonna keep it?” Newt asked, turning his full attention back towards Hange. “I mean… I don’t think there are any rules against pets or anything. A guy in my suite has a cat.”

| Xichen | Move-in day | Room 4C | Xichen handed the instrument case to Orpheus as he reached for it. While he wouldn't let just anyone carry the case, he trusted the other musician with his flute. Orpheus was gentle, and Xichen had seen the care he took with his lyre. "Awesome, thanks for the update. Plus, I'm sure we'll meet most of them at the meet and greet tonight." Xichen said. He turned, taking in the sight of the room. It was regular dorm sizes, but homey, and after two years of living in the dorms already Xichen felt that they could manage it. Besides, with both of them being musicians, there would be less of a chance to bother the other with any practice. He rolled the suitcase to his side of the room, then turned to see the nametags Orpheus was planning. "If they don't like them they can be polite for five minutes, say "Thanks RAs!" and then make their own." Xichen countered, only half joking. The conflict resolution trainings he and Orpheus had attended as part of their RA training had not prepared him for... whatever was going on here. It would be fine. They could do this. "But yeah, it sounds like there's some more musicians here. Good. The jam sessions will be fun!" He added, offering an optimistic smile. "I'm still parked up at the curb, so I'll go grab another armload of things, park, and head back up." Xichen told Orpheus.

Orpheus did his best to be careful – he knew how much instruments cost, and that was only part of it. Instruments cost far more in sentimental value and familiarity than they did in money. The flute was lighter than most of Orpheus’ instruments, which made it a little easier to be careful with. Holding the case, it felt delicate. “I hope so!” he replied after a moment, glancing down the hall. Some of the residents seemed friendly enough, and Orpheus found he was excited to get to know them. He was excited to get to know the others, too, even if he was more uncertain about them. He was hoping they just had funky senses of humor. After all, he had been nervous about Hange, but they had been very kind when he’d gone to replace the screen and check the room. It seemed likely they had all just got off on the wrong foot – the potential for miscommunication was so much higher over text than it was when you were face to face with someone. “I’m not sure many of them are very practiced being polite,” he added, a small smile flickering across his face. “That’s alright, though.” He wasn’t sure how this year was going to go, but after getting settled for a night, he felt a little bit better about it. L’s presence only had a little bit to do with that. Okay… maybe more than a little bit. It was a fresh new day and Orpheus was ready to see how it went. “Maybe we can organize a jam session later this week, before classes start,” he recommended, carefully setting the flute down on Xichen’s bed. “Do you want me to come down and help you unload?”

| Xichen | 4th Floor | Locked out with Touka | Touka looked miserable, and Xichen's smile wavered. She really did seem like she wanted to make a good impression. He looked over to his door, jiggling the handle- he knew it wasn't going to open but it gave him something to do with his hands as a distraction from the awkward moment that hung in the hallway. "That's me! And you're Touka, right?" Xichen asked, trying to push past the awkward moment in a friendly manner. "Hey, I'm locked out until Orpheus gets back. I could help you look for your key if you'd like?" | Xichen | 4th Floor | Move-In Day with Orpheus | "I suppose we'll find out." Xichen answered. "And besides, in-person might be very different from online. And as everyone fits into a pattern I'm sure it'll smooth out." "Yeah, a jam will be fun. We can ask folks when they're free at the meet and greet. And maybe send something in the groupchat." Xichen agreed. He'd brought his melodica too, for more casual or goofy music sessions. "Oh, no need- you don't have to!" Xichen waved a hand at Orpheus' offer automatically. But... they could get the job down more quickly together, and then work on nametags. Plus they could chat and catch up before the semester started. "But if you don't mind, I'd appreciate it."

Hange | chillin | strider |"Sixty!" said Hange, surprised. "I would be happy to get that many. My first class only assigned me 20 questions and a few pages to read, and I finished it yesterday, so I think it would be fun to have more. Ah - too bad we can't split up homework, or I could do some of yours." They held the salamander up again, watching it stare at its own reflection in their glasses, a placid expression on its amphibious features. "Woah.....they allow that, huh?" they said, their eyes widening in delight. "If I kept him in my room, he wouldn't have to worry about getting eaten by anything that lives outside, I suppose." They looked back up at Newt, tilting their head. "Do you want to come with me to the pet store?"

Touka | really trying, ok | Cloverleaf |"Yeah, Touka," she confirmed, her stomach twisting as the RA recognized her on the spot. Why hadn't she thought to take a closer look at everyone's profile pictures? It wasn't like she'd wanted to make an enemy of one out of their two RAs on the very first day, even if her tongue got her in trouble sometimes. "Look, about what I said, I - wait, what?" She interrupted herself, blinking in surprise as what Xichen had actually said caught up to her. She had autofilled in the blanks as soon as he'd started speaking, but instead of yelling at her or scolding her for being disrespectful, the guy had taken a completely different route. "Uh.....are you, y'know, sure?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "Uuuuuuuuuusually people don't offer to help you after you like....insulted them to their face. Is all I'm saying?"

Touka | keycard search and rescue mission | Cloverleaf |Touka narrowed her eyes at Xichen, trying to make up her mind about him. He seemed nice, even if he did have kind of a slimy teacher vibe around him - he talked like he was older than her, even though they were in school together, which got on her nerves, but - she was starting to suspect it was just how he was personality wise, instead of it being a choice to act high and mighty. Yeah, no, she wasn't sure what she thought of him yet. "Sure," she said, shrugging and moving to join him in the hall so they could get going. As they walked, she glanced at him, rolling her eyes. "Right...family rules." A family. That was something people generally had when they went to college. Something Xichen probably assumed she had, and she wasn't feeling up to a long walk full of pitying stares, so she wasn't going to correct him on it just yet. Besides, he'd probably find out, right? The admissions people would gossip, and it would get around. Best to enjoy it while she could. "So, what're your folks like?" she asked, moving down the hall to start down the path where she'd last been. Best to retrace her steps.

| Xichen | Fourth Floor | Keycard Adventure with Touka | "Oh- I, uh, live with my uncle. My little brother and I." If he was surprised at the unexpected question he tried to smooth it over quickly. He didn't like to lead with Oh, my folks aren't around. It made the conversation awkward, and it made him feel like he was bringing others down. He didn't want to be the star of a sob story. He just wanted to be some dude. And as for Touka's assessment, she was right. He wasn't trying to act high and mighty. He was just a bit of an old soul. Xichen had grown up as an older brother, and ever since his parents had passed, it had been up to him to look out for his little brother- they'd both been in their uncle's custody afterwards, yes, but he was sometimes distant, and strict. Xichen felt like it was often up to him to be the responsible one. "My uncle's nice. Strict, I guess. But supportive- he's fine with me being a music major, since I've got the comms major with it. So, you know, back up plan." Xichen answered. "How about your folks?"

That spoke for itself, and she, like Xichen, didn't feel like filling in the blanks. "My grades in high school were always best in science, and that stuff's cool, so...I dunno. Gonna give it a try."

| Lan Xichen | 4th Floor | Keycard Adventure with Touka | Xichen nodded. He had been lucky enough to have other family to fall back on. It was a stark reminder that others... weren't as lucky. Something clicked together in his brain as he remembered how she'd mentioned that she wasn't moving in with much stuff. "Yeah-" I'm sorry, always just felt sort of empty or useless. So he didn't say it. Instead, he offered, "Science? Nice. Glad you're giving it a try. And if you ever want to-" talk? His brain supplied sarcastically. He knew how cliché it sounded. "-hang out, or need to ask about how something works, I'm around. Seriously, no judgement or anything. College stuff can be weird, and arbitrary." "So, when did you last use your keycard?" He asked, offering a new subject in case Touka wanted to move on quickly.

“I forgot how stressful move in day was last year,” Orpheus commented, giving a small shrug. “My RA wasn’t really a lot of help. I just… want to do a better job than he did, I guess. If we can make this week any easier for these kids, I’ll consider it a job well done.” Orpheus knew he wasn’t going to be able to get along with all of them, though he did dislike the idea of being disliked. He was still learning that he couldn’t win everybody over, no matter how hard he tried. As long as the students on their floor knew he was there… that was all he could do. “It’ll be good to start planning things,” he agreed, giving a soft smile and holding the door open for Xichen as they headed back out. “And I’m more than happy to help with your stuff. I’m not doing anything except the nametags, and I’d rather have you helping with those, anyway.”

“I don’t mind the questions,” Newt admitted, giving a small shrug, “It just worries me if they’re assigning sixty problems on the first day how much work I’m gonna have to do before the midterms. Especially when we get out of topics that are sort of review and into things that I don’t know yet.” He laid back, staring at the sky for a long moment before he turned his head to look at Hange better. “What classes are you in?” he asked, realizing he knew next to nothing about his new friend. He didn’t even know their major, although he was getting a little bit sick of every single conversation just being ‘hi what’s your name what’s your major oh cool hope to see you around bye.’ This conversation… had not been that, and honestly, Newt was relieved. “Sure!” he said after a moment, pushing himself back to his elbows. “I don’t… know where the nearest one is, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find.”
