Jayfeather and Dovewing have the same power.
I kind of feel like the authors got so used to writing in Dovewing's POV that they forgot that not every cat can just casually tell what's happening on the other side of the lake. I know he's sort of implied to have done this before in Long Shadows, but 1. that was before Dovewing existed, and 2. that scene can at least be interpreted as his imagination rather than what's literally happening. Whereas with this one, he can literally tell what's going on. It's not as sharp a picture as Dovewing gets, but it's actually more useful; because not only can he tell what's going on in any location, he knows how everyone in said location feels about what's going on.
Anyway. I actually like OotS. It's an enjoyable mess. But... it's still a mess.
Personally I feel like Jayfeather should have a distance limit on his empath powers. Perhaps no further than he can hear would be a convenient boundary?

Whoa. That's messed up.
Reason #1365 why OotS is a mess: Characters are all annoying

NGL, when I'm writing something I am so peculiar about the details, it's so important to me. I know they shovel these books out multiple times a year and multiple are writing them, but like... the quality control who revises these books need their own quality control.

This is the reason why the authors should've just brainstormed harder for that Hollyleaf power. She could have made cats speak the truth or been able to easily sway opinions. Imagine the mind games and a showdown with Sol in which he gets absolutely wrecked by her.
Then there probably also wouldn't have been all that love drama which kind of ruined OotS for me. Dovewing as a normal warrior and not ending up with Tigerheart/star or Bumblestripe is my ultimate headcanon.

geez, i always thought jay and dove's powers were just a bit too similar, but i never realized it was this bad. it makes no sense that they casted out hollyleaf because they couldn't think of a power for her, only to give dovewing what is essentially jayfeather's power. i remember thinking yellowfang's power in her super edition was similar to jayfeather's as well, but correct me if i'm wrong on that since it's been years since i read it. the erins must have really liked jayfeather's shtick. Yellowfang had psychic hyper-empathy which enabled her to feel the pain of cats around her while Jayfeather has the ability to read memories, walk in dreams, and feel emotions.

I think instead of super-hearing, Dovewing could have had a power similar to Goosefeather's. She could have the ability to see possible futures, but would differ from Goose in that she would have the ability to change them. Maybe she could see things in the recent past, too.
So for example in The Fourth Apprentice she wouldn't smell/hear the fire starting, but rather would have a vivid image come to her of it. Later, she catches a glimpse of a beaver and gets another overwhelming image of the beavers blocking the water. The issue, though, is that she'd constantly be having low-grade and inconsequential flashes of the future and past that she has to try and tune out. Like if she bumps into a clanmate, she might see that later they'll get a thorn in their paw; or if she sees a bird flying past, she gets a brief vision of it returning to its nest. This is what makes her resent her powers - once she learns that not everyone experiences reality in the way that she does, she wants to be able to talk to people normally and to have a normal experience of the world.

Since we have had so many power cats, they could have had Hollyleaf do a mimic power if they couldn't think of something. I know having her make cats tell the truth is commonly interesting, but I also like the idea of Hollyleaf having something where she can take something from someone. Guess I see her as Rogue more than Wonder Woman, heh.

biggest reason OotS sucks: the Three's powers don't do crap in the big battle anyways. Jay already did his job by uniting Starclan BEFORE the battle. Lion's power is generic enough that just fighting in the battle is his participation points in "helping saving the clans." but dove's powers are the most useless. all she did was call out stuff and nothing else important. the three as a whole were wasted in both Po3 and OotS. also hard agree with BҽɾɾყႦʅσσɱ if they just planned the three's powers in advance, hollyleaf's power could be way more useful than dovewing's. they didn't plan how the three's powers would actually help in a final dark forest battle AT ALL and it 100% shows. so not only did they waste hollyleaf, but her replacement dovewing is way more useless.
