Poor Daisy! And Coriander and her kits, too. I was literally getting Silverstream flashbacks from that scene.

Oh, this made me sad. Poor Daisy is reflecting on her lost kits. At least Mousewhisker is trying to comfort her. I'm glad they remembered that he's her son.
Poor Coriander, and her kits. I felt rather bad for Smoky too. Poor Coriander had one stillborn, but at least the other two seem to be alright. I'm willing to bet there's a chance they're going to be joining ThunderClan by the end. Or they'll be adopted/raised by Daisy. Or both. I would like to see Mousewhisker's interactions with his new half-siblings.

"A swell of fury rose in Daisy’s chest, but she forced it down. Where did being a “ helpful Clanmate” get me? she asked herself bitterly. I’ve lost all but one of my kits. Now Mousewhisker is my only surviving kin..."
Daisy! No! You still have Cherryfall and Molewhisker! I guess they forgot those two were Berrynose's kits. What a shame.

That was certainly intense to read through and now it got me wondering if Daisy perhaps decides to permanently stay with her former mate at the horseplace or will come back to ThunderClan in the end.
Maybe Smoky would even join them and she could raise his and Coriander's kits which also gives Daisy a new purpose in continuing on with her position as a permanent queen in the nursery.
Her only surviving kit Mousewhisker was great in this as well and I hope he eventually has kits of his own so that the bloodline of Daisy and Smoky lives on besides that of Cherryfall and Molewhisker.

I wonder what's happened at the horseplace that made Smoky and Coriander move. Maybe it/them was partly or was the cause of the complications with Coriander's birthing? For those saying that Smoky and their kits might move to ThunderClan, I can't see much of a chance of that happening. Coriander's dying wish included her kits not growing up in the Clans, and Smoky promised her. I do wonder though how the kits will be fed, since it appears clear that they will not be given to Twolegs. And there's no nursing queen in ThunderClan to feed them temporarily. Maybe a queen in another Clan?

Oh, poor Daisy. Now Mousewhisker is the only one of her kits still alive. Speaking of which, I don't like how the book specifically said Mousewhisker was her only surviving kin. Did they forget that Cherryfall and Molewhisker are Berrynose's kits? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Mousewhisker is a good son though and this is the first time he was called muscular in the books. Finchpaw and Flamepaw were apprentices for how many moons? 4? Idk. I think they were 6 moons at the end of Lost Stars, but I could be wrong. Though, they were already apprentices when TST started. Weird... repeat. I'm hoping this isn't in the actual book. And here's Smoky. Daisy seeing Smoky in Bramblestar's Storm is given a mention as well as her wondering if Mousewhisker remembers Smoky is his father. Smoky and Mousewhisker are also stated to look exactly alike. Both of them are strong and muscular with fluffy gray-and-white pelts. Hazeltail also has a fluffy gray-and-white pelt. Though she's smaller than her brother. Mousewhisker looks completely awkward. Makes sense, since he doesn't really know his father.

I'm not really that surprised that Smoky and Coriander are mates. It was hinted at in BrS. So Daisy, Alderheart, Mousewhisker and Sorrelstripe are going to help Coriander with her unborn kits. Not that surprised Daisy wanted her son there, but he was back in the Clan in DW after Daisy left. So he clearly came back. No comment on Sorrelstripe. She only appeared at the beginning of DW.
True, she didn't tell Smoky about Hazeltail's death the last time she saw him. I was confused as to why, though I know Daisy was upset at the time. Seems like Smoky realized that Berrynose and Hazeltail were dead without being told. It's so sad. :c
This is the first time Whistlepaw and Songpaw appeared in a book, though they have no speaking roles. Hootwhisker was friendly until he saw Smoky. Lol, Crouchfoot. Poking at Hootwhisker like that.
I wonder why Smoky and Coriander had to move. What things have changed?

Hot take: "Nofurs" is a dumber name than "Twolegs." And I hope this novella will make people who read and hear of it stop calling Daisy useless. She's obviously far more than that. Coriander died? No! It's so sad, I wished to see more of her...

Not surprised Mousewhisker feels uncomfortable. This isn't in his expertise. He's a warrior, not a medicine cat. Poor Coriander. :c Something is clearly not right. There's too much blood and the kits aren't coming. This is more than just a hard kitting... Coriander doesn't want the Twolegs (Nofurs) to take away her kits, but she also doesn't want them to grow up in the Clans. Also "Greenleaf is coming". The events timeline on the wiki states that all of Darkness Within takes place during Greenleaf. Idk. Coriander knows she's gonna die and that's so sad. This is just like Silverstream all over again. Two kits made it... but the third ended up stillborn just like Flickerkit back in SqH. *Sniff* Now I just feel like crying. Coriander died in childbirth. Poor thing.

That was heart breaking. We didn't even get to see much of coriander and I was still sad. I also saw smoky as more of a tom who didn't care for kits much but he actually seemed desperately excited for this litter. Maybe he genuinely loved Coriander, more than Daisy or Floss.
I don't think they'll go to the Clans. First off, ThunderClan has no nursing queens. My sneaking suspicion is they'll be joining the Sisters, or at least staying there until they're weaned. They mentioned a queen close to kitting in their group.

Ah...this is heartbreaking. Between Daisy struggling with depression after losing almost all her kits, and then Smoky losing Coriander and one of his new kits as well...this is pretty sad. However, it does make me wonder what happens now...the kits are motherless...and Coriander's dying wish was that they didn't join the clans or be taken by twolegs. The kits need a surrogate mother to look after them if they even have a chance of surviving...I wonder if Daisy is going to stay with Smoky to help raise the kits?

P Poor Coriander and Smoky
I do LOVE the interactions we get with Mousewhisker and Daisy. Daisy is one of my favorite cats in the series and she deserves better
I also love Sorrelstripe getting more personality.

That was heartbreaking. I forgot how brutal deaths in childbirth could be in the Warriors series. I wonder if something was wrong with coriander, though, considering the series has never seen something like what happened to her... if a place of no stars takes place after this, then it’s possible that Daisy decides to return to the clans. I wonder if she’ll have them renewed sense of purpose, or maybe even retire soon... it makes me feel so bad for her, because she’s been through a lot, even compared to other characters...

I've never been the biggest Daisy fan. I'm certainly not one of the people that thinks she's useless or anything like that, but I just never thought she had much personality development outside of the whole Cloudtail fiasco. I would've loved to see more development of Daisy being part of the Clan and being seen as a valued member of the Clan (which I don't think she really was until much more recently).
However, this changes things a lot. I never thought a Daisy POV would be that compelling, but damn was this painful to read, and I am really excited to read the rest.

Let Daisy adopt Coriander's kits and let her remember that she has Cherryfall and Molewhisker as kin also. I'm hoping as well that the repeat was a website thing and not in the actual books. I got a little teary eyed at Coriander's death and really felt for Smoky though.

I am a Daisy and Ferncloud stan first, and a human being second

I've been MIA in the fandom and only vaguely checking upcoming stuff, but as soon as I saw the excerpt for Daisy's novella was out, I almost had a heart attack. Head full, no thoughts -- just remembering how much of a Daisy stan I am. Okay, but really: just when I thought I couldn't love Daisy more...it seems like this novella is going to prove me wrong. Apparently my fondness for her knows no bounds. Ramble tiiimmmee. Some scenes were lovely (like her and Mousewhisker's scenes, and her thinking about many cats she had seen grow from kits to warriors). Other parts are just plain distressing, because her aforementioned reflections about helping raise most of the Clan's current generation barely means anything to her, beyond feeling useless to them now that there's no kits for her to take care of or queens to assist.
Her thoughts about burying Berrynose and Rosepetal after already having lost Hazeltail and Toadstep a while ago is so sad. You can really feel her distress when she remembered helping Sparkpelt with Flamepaw and Finchpaw, who now didn't even acknowledge her when they walked past. She's so depressed that her Clanmates were genuinely surprised to see her leave the nursery; that's not even mentioning how she didn't even have the energy to clean her fur of the mud that had caked it for the past few days! She's in so much pain, and nobody except Mousewhisker seems to be reaching out to her.
These parts did make me happy, though:
I love how protective her Clanmates are of her, and not really in a "damsel in distress" way. This reaction is basically what makes the Clans who they are. They respond somewhat overprotectively of every member of the Clan, whether it's an experienced warrior or beloved queen, when they don't know what sort of intentions an outsider might have for wanting to speak to one Clanmate directly. At the same time, I'm very desperate for more one-on-one and personal interactions from them showing how much they care about her, considering how clearly detached she feels from them.
Don't even get me started on her realizing Smoky didn't know Berrynose (and Hazeltail) had died, and not being sure how to break the news to him. She couldn't even for the words, yet he figured it out. Smoky requesting Daisy's help with Coriander's kitting made Daisy feel so hopeful and excited to have a new purpose again. She loves kits and helping other cats so much...only for Coriander to die. She knew it would probably happen, but she wanted so badly to save her. Gahhh!
By the way...WHAT GAVE YOU THE NERVE TO WRITE THIS, ERIN:
Oh, and that part where the WindClan cats confronted them before they reached Coriander hurt me so damn much. Poor Daisy was suddenly overwhelmed by terrifying thoughts of Mousewhisker collapsing and dying of horrible wounds in front of her if a fight broke out. She was so scared that she automatically moved in front of him to stand between him and the WindClan cats. Every action and thought shows us how traumatized she is by her other kits' deaths, and her fear that her last kit might die. It's not often we read such stark depression and invasive thoughts of loved ones' deaths through the eyes of a POV character.
I mean, it's faintly been touched upon here and there, such as Lionblaze thinking about murdering Heathertail once or twice during PO3, but that plot petered out. We've also seen it a little before in side characters, which were always described well. Palebird comes to mind, then Sparkpelt in recent memory is a perfect example. This is a fresh and different change, though, since Daisy's character is relatively unique. All other modern day queens we've had were trained as warriors prior to having litters and can technically always go back to their old ranks if they want to. Daisy didn't have that experience. She's not a warrior-turned-queen who can return to her former duties, or a medicine cat, who also have constant busywork even if there's no prophecies, wounds, and/or sicknesses to tend to. As a permanent nursery queen, she thinks there's nothing else for her to do if there's no kits or fellow queens who need her help, and that she's just...there, doing nothing for the Clan.
Honestly, her thoughts and emotions here remind me way too much of my own, to the point where it's almost disconcerting. I'm legitimately not sure if I'll be able to read her novella more than once or twice, once I get it lmao Daisy is too sweet to be going through so much tragedy, and deserves the world a thousand times over. TLDR; This preview has left my thoughts in a constant loop of "BABY GIRL, YOU DON'T DESERVE THIS 🥺" and I have no clue how I'm gonna make it through to the end. All I want for Daisy at this point is to be happy, even if it's not in the Clans. I do hope she goes back, though, because I think in spite of how detached she feels from them right now, they are her family and they care. Hopefully we'll see other ThunderClan cats aside from Mousewhisker explicitly show that to her.

I can't wait for this book! I hope we get to see a lot more Mousewhisker, and it doesn't turn out like Graystripe's Vow, where they have the perfect chance to develop these cats who have been around awhile, and possibly will be around for awhile, in favor of focusing on a group of cats, who we'll probably never see again.

Seeing Daisy’s point of view also reminds me that she never intended to stay with the clans. She was going to just stay until her kits could look after themselves, and then either return to the barn or become a loner. When she realized that she wasn’t fit for the latter life and didn’t want the former, she basically had no choice but to stay with the Clans. So while helping others and kits may give her a purpose, serving the clan really doesn’t or doesn’t completely because she doesn’t have the background and ingrained loyalty that the other characters do. And I think that makes her interesting, but the result of that shows up here. I also wish we got more points of view from permanent queens like Ferncloud and Clovertail to see how they felt about the whole role of being a permanent queen and trying to make themselves useful. It might have been less of an issue, because those two were trained to hunt and fight before becoming permanent queens, but I still wish we knew more. Purdy is another interesting case because he was unable to hunt and fight from the get go, and retired immediately as soon as he joined the Clans. He seemed to have found his purpose passing down Clan history and his own, but it would be interesting if he had some feelings of uselessness once in a while. It’s also implied that he may have known how to defend himself at least a little bit, because he was on his own for quite a bit by the time the Clan cats found him. And I believe it was also stated that he had several owners and lived in several different places before that, so he had already seen and done a lot.
