A fanfiction by Kestrelpaw
"I, Petalkit, one and only daughter of Goldenstar and princess of LionClan, order you, Sunkit, stripey-warrior, to go and get me some prey, or I shall have you. . . Exacamuted."
-Petalkit, Chapter 1 𝕊𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕒𝕣𝕪 It is the time of the legends. Big cats roam the forest--LionClan, led by Goldenstar; TigerClan, led by Shadestar; LeopardClan, led by Swiftstar. And left on the border, found by Goldenstar, is Sunkit. He was brought into LionClan, but is most definitely not welcome. Everyone knows he has a tiger's pelt; he must prove he has a lion's heart.

ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕖𝕣 𝟙
I am not normal. I know that by now.
My pelt, I assume, is the reason for this. Though it is the gold of LionClan, faint, almost nonexistent silver stripes cross over my pelt; the marks of TigerClan.
Petalkit tells me it adds "character." My other clan-mates glare at me as if I'm dirt (or at least, my stripes are). And I, personally, have no idea what to think. I like my stripes to some extent. It's better to wear them proudly than to dig myself into a hole of despair and self-pity over the way my clan treats me. Honestly, they are that prejudiced to TigerClan.
It's not that I don't want to be like them. I do, desperately. I want to be a normal LionClan cat, not a cat that makes my clan mates think "you come from where, now? Good, I'll send you back there the second Goldenstar isn't looking." I swear, that's the look I'm given by about half the cats of my clan.
They don't want me here.
I've heard the elders gossiping about me when they think I'm not listening. They immediately quiet as I walk by, but I've pieced the story together enough.
I was barely a day old, left between the borders of TigerClan and LionClan. Metaphorically, I'd say that sums up my life well. On the border, and most definitely unwanted. Except for by Goldenstar, it seems. I have only a few friends--more like only one half friends. Petalkit, of course, has the most ridiculously positive outlook on life. It's enough to be infuriating, but it comes in handy friendship-wise.
The only other cat that's remotely nice to me is Ryepaw. He's a moon older than me, and acts like a haughty version of Goldenstar; He has a "I'm-the-ruler-and-so-I-have-to-be-nice-to-half-TigerClan-cats" kind of relationship with me. He actually talks to me, though, so that's nice, even if it is in short, clipped sentences. If this wasn't in writing, you would be hearing me sigh right about now.
They said that I should have been lucky Goldenstar was there to stop them. That the mangy flea-pelts from Tigerclan would’ve mauled me and I was lucky to be alive. Supposedly he talked his way into letting Lionclan keep me. I doubt you can convince Tigerclan to do anything, but sure, we’ll go with that side of the story.
The rest of the clan undoubtedly wishes that Goldenstar had left me to die. I can tell by the way they look at me, that why do you exist when you should be dead? kind of look. This clan drives me crazy. They always go quiet whenever I walk by, not the kind of respectful quiet they give Goldenstar, the kind of quiet where it makes you feel like someone died — or at least someone should have, I suppose.
Sometimes I wonder if Goldenstar regrets his decision. From the reception he gets from it, I'd say he would, but he doesn't act like he regrets it. Indeed, oftentimes I can see him watching me when I "play" with the other kits. It's not the same stare the other cats give me, and there's something hidden deep in his wise amber eyes.
I do know for a fact, Goldenstar seems very protective of me. Once, when I was playing with Blossomnose's kits (before they had gotten out of the nursery), they had been playing rougher with me, and had had their claws out. Goldenstar shooed them away, checked me for injuries, and went to have a long talk with Blossomnose.
Us kits had hidden in one-time unity behind the elder's den, fearful of Goldenstar's wrath. He can be very scary when he wants to be.
"SUNKIT!" was the only warning I got before suddenly I was flat on my back, looking up at a very happy Petalkit. I struggled in vain for a moment before going limp in defeat. She always managed to pin me down--even though I was at least a moon older than her.
"Hello, Petalkit," I said with a mock sigh of exasperation, weakly batting at her ears. She swatted at me.
"What, are you not happy to see royalty?" Petalkit gasped, jumping off of me and batting at my paws.
I got up, shaking my pelt to get the dust off. "Oh!" I mock gasped, 'astonished.' "You're royalty? In that case, I growl at your feet," I stretched my forepaws in from of me in a bow.
"It's grovel, genius," Petalkit sighed. "You can't get anything right. We practiced this! Aaaaanyway, guess what?" She bounced from our game to another topic so fast it took me a moment to answer.
"Er, chicken but?" I guessed, sitting back up and curling my tail around my paws. I'd heard Rowanpaw and Volepaw use the phrase, though I had no idea what it meant.
"What? I don't even know what a chicken is," Petalkit tilted her head, confused. She was very cute when she did that. Er, not that I thought that. I, uh, had heard Rowanpaw say that. Yeah. "Father said your apprentice ceremony is today! Just after--Oh. I wasn't supposed to tell you that." Petalkit went from bouncy to plain happy. That was about all of her mood range. Different levels of happy.
"Really?" I asked, perking my ears forward questioningly. "You're not kidding?"
"Would I lie to you?" Petalkit gasped, offended. "Why would I joke about something like this?" Oh, I don't know, because maybe the cats that hate me in this clan have been rubbing off on you and so now you agree that playing tricks on the half-TigerClan cat would be a great idea? Really, though, I knew she'd never joke about something like this, unlike most cats in the clan.
"Ummm," I over-exaggerated thinking it over, "Maybe because the last time you told me Goldenstar said we could do something we ended up cleaning the elder's ticks for a week--even though that's an apprentice's job." It was true, Petalkit had convinced me that Goldenstar said we could go out of camp and of course I had trusted her. We'd barely gotten three steps out before one of the warriors had dragged us back in to see Goldenstar. "And what about that time when--?"
"Okay, okay!" Petalkit yelped, "That was one time. Anyway I'm not lying."
I gave her a skeptical look.
"I'm not!" She half-growled at me. "If you don't trust me, I'll have you. . . exacamuted!" She said that like it was a bad thing, growling the last word in a menacing tone, but I was ninety-nine percent sure she had no idea what "exacamuted" meant. Neither did I, so I wasn't one to talk.
"Oh great StarClan, not exacamuted!" I gasped in mock terror, stumbling as if the terrible weight of the word was enough to knock me over. She cuffed me on the head.
"Yes, exacamuted," Petalkit meowed, before straightening up into a "regal" posture. "I, Petalkit, one and only daughter of Goldenstar and princess of LionClan, order you, Sunkit, stripey-warrior, to go and get me some prey, or I shall have you..." She drew a paw across her throat. "Exacamuted."
"Sir, yes, sir!" I saluted with my tail, dodged her attempt to swat at me, and headed over to the fresh-kill pile in the center of camp, where the dawn-patrol warriors had just brought back their prey. I watched as Ryepaw laid a squirrel onto the pile, then as Rabbitfoot added two mice; Pigeonflight, a crow, and lastly, Goldenstar, leading from the back of the patrol, placed a rabbit onto the now-large pile.
The border/hunting patrol then went their separate ways, Ryepaw carrying his squirrel over to the elder's den while the rest had their pick of prey. Goldenstar went over to Amberheart, both the deputy and his mate, and began discussing in low tones while Petalkit ran up to play with his tail. I smiled at her a moment before going to pick up the two of us breakfast.
There was suddenly a wall of tawny fur in front of me before Autumnpaw came crashing into me. Trotting towards the pile, I had no time to stop, and ran headfirst into Autumnpaw's thick fur before bouncing back off and landing on my back. Autumnpaw, being much larger than me, managed to stay upright.
I now understood the phrase "shooting daggers out of her eyes." Autumnpaw was doing just that. "OW!" she yowled, though it probably didn't hurt her much to have a striped ball of kit-nearly-apprentice run into her. "What was that for!"
I sighed and mentally prepared myself for what was to come. "What, you think that because you're a kit you can do anything you want?" Autumnpaw yelped in my ear, "Well, that's not true! What do you want? Huh, Stripekit?"
Oh, great. I'd hoped she'd make it at least halfway through before she started calling me "Stripekit." "My name is not Stripekit," I sighed, "And I was going to go get some prey." It crossed my mind that it was probably a bad idea to talk back at her, but I'd already had a rough morning with Rosekit and Sparrowkit attacking me and pretending I was a TigerClan warrior.
Strangely, though, she went from highly annoyed to just plain disgruntled. "Whatever," she mumbled, slumping her shoulders tiredly. I supposed getting up for dawn patrol and not catching anything must have been exhausting for her, because she slouched off muttering about how I was lucky and that I shouldn't expect this every time.
This was strange to me. I'd been raised in a clan that was told to hate TigerClan and everything about them and so, of course, the clan disliked me (to put it nicely). Most of the time Autumnpaw managed to get it to sound like everything was my fault when I had conversations with her; she'd never left me alone before.
I hurriedly brought the mice over to Petalkit (who was now chewing on her father's ear), dropping one mouse beside her and sitting down to eat my own, my thoughts full of why Autumnpaw hadn't bothered blaming me for all her problems. From there my thoughts circled around to the question always in the back of my mind--how could I prove my clan that I was loyal to them when they always seemed to think I was up to something terrible? They always thought I was the cause of their problems; a nuisance; an annoying, weak, tiny half-TigerClan cat that could never do anything right and never be a true warrior of LionClan.
I would just have to prove them wrong.

This is really good! I'm enjoying what you have so far. You've done a good job writing this. -100 Minus 1
This looks amazing! I can't wait to read more! In the first chapter you've already set the tone, established the important characters, and told us the conflict! I've read a bunch of fan fictions that take until the third chapter to get that far -- and it still has the kit's view of the world; "exacamuted" and the fact that they've "practiced" addressing royalty is hilarious. I can't wait to see where this goes! -FåwnFrøst

Ooh, I'm so glad you guys like this! I'm working on Chapter 2, but with school and staying after school for clubs plus homework, I hardly have any time to get on and write. That's not to say I haven't been thinking of ideas. I'm certain you'll like this next Chapter, and I'm glad you guys are excited for it! I'll try my best to have it up by next weekend, hopefully sooner.
