โ overview
Come one, come all to indulge my recent obsession with vikings! This roleplay has a number of inspirations ranging from the show Vikings to Assassin's Creed: Valhalla to the Bernard Cornwell books/show (Last Kingdom). But though I'm drawing my muse from a certain range of places, anyone is welcome to join and there is no prior knowledge required to be involved. The idea is to create a rich world with subplots and avenues for joiners to explore. Hopefully there will be something for everyone whether you're interested in romance, action, history, mythology, mystery, or politics. The story revolves around a clan of Danes who have staked their claim in England, much to the chagrin of the neighboring Saxons. The plotlines will revolve around their various exploits.

โ thornestead
The settlement is only five years old, but already it is teeming with life. Set into the curve of a hill, Thornestead is large enough to house the entire clan, which is comprised of about seventy people, as well as a number of allies. The land was selected for its fertility, with its large trees and rich soil. In the summer, the nearby hills are littered with wildflowers. The town is fortified by a low wooden wall, just enough to give intruders. At the base of the hill is the river where the ships are docked. Behind the fishermens' huts are more houses belonging to the members of the clan. The houses are generally modest, but functional, each customized for their owners' needs. Further up the hill is the longhouse, where the jarl and his family live. It also serves as a massive dining hall for feasts and a meeting area for the entire clan. The longhouse is massive and richly decorated in the sigil of Thorne Clan: a falcon with a thistle in its talons. The clan colors are yellow and black, which can also be seen on many shields and on the boats.
Given the settlement is self sustaining, each person in the clan has their own role to play. Of course there is a political hierarchy with the jarl as the head of everything that happens. Below him are the councilmen (and women) who are mostly trusted warriors to the jarl who assist in everything from alliance formation to territory expansion to raids and settlement-related matters. After that are a select group of warriors where fighting is their primary concern. These men are often on the road. Beyond that, everyone else contributes in varying degrees to the fighting as well as the settlement. The various jobs include fishermen, merchants, blacksmiths, hunters, builders, tattoo artists, healers, tattoo artists, ship builders, map makers, etc. These people live across the settlement and closely rely on each other to sustain the healthy ecosystem that is Thornestead. โโโโโโโโโ
โ important places
The Longhouse: The largest and most prominent building in the territory. It is primarily a large gathering hall featuring tables, hearths, benches, a throne for the jarl, and high ceilings with thick beams. A few rooms on either side of the longhouse are residential. If the settlement is ever under attack, the longhouse is where everyone would gather.
The Docks: This is where the boats are kept on the river. It's also the main stomping grounds for the fishermen, so it features hanging nets and freshly caught fish on drying hooks. The river itself is deep and slow-moving.
The Square: The busiest center of the settlement is near the base of the hill, around which many of the most essential buildings are centered including Skalpa's Inn. This is where any guests to the settlement stay, but it is also where many of the residents gather on casual nights to drink, play games, and socialize.
The Cemetery: Outside the fortifications is a shady hillside which hosts the graves of the lost warriors. It has other functions as well, though, given it is one of the closest landmarks outside the settlement itself. This is where traveling parties tend to meet, and it is also a good spot for collecting fresh berries and herbs. The children of the settlement do believe it's haunted, but that is to be expected.
The Stables: On the western side of the town, just inside the wall, are the stables. This is where all of the horses are housed. It is also a go-to spot for secret meetings and trysts. It's the closest building to the western entrance as well, and there is a gate that is usually left open.
The Waterfall: A short distance uphill from the town is a stream which leads to some cliffs. Tucked into the cliffs is a waterfall and a small pond. The stream runs parallel to a road which leads into the wilderness. The waterfall is generally considered the last point of security, as it is a short walk from town.

โ the world
I'm not going to set a specific date for the roleplay to take place in firstly because the historicity of the story will be of little relevance and secondly because I don't know enough about the history to be an authority on it. I want everyone, including myself, to feel free to be creative regardless of whether or not it is accurate. If it helps to think of it as a fantasy inspired by Vikings, then that's great! This section is just to be used as a reference point for what the general context of the plot. Point is, the roleplay takes place in England but the characters from Thorne Clan are mostly from Norway ("Dane" is a term specific to people from Denmark but it can also be used interchangeably with the term "viking."). This is an England that is very fractured, with various regions and groups fighting for control. The Saxons are generally Christians and the Danes are pagans with their own gods and culture. Major powers in England will be the monasteries, various regional rulers/kings, and the invading Danes. There are some cities but they function mostly as military strongholds. It is not a great time for wealth and prosperity. โโโโโโโโโ
โ the culture
Just a recap of viking culture for the purposes of this rp: The vikings have a rich culture which originates in northern europe but which expands at the time of this roleplay. They believe in their own pantheon of gods (Loki, Thor, Freya, Odin being some of the most important ones) and origin myths. Beyond their religious beliefs, they have a strong warrior culture which is bolstered by the need for resources which are more easily found the the south, which is one of the reasons they expand. Britain in particular offers wealth from the monasteries, which until recently were easy pickings for the invading Danes. Most of the people in the culture, including women, are encouraged to learn how to fight. Dying a glorious death is one of the only ways to get to Valhalla, which is the ultimate goal. The vikings raid using their boats which are large enough to carry a few dozen men but small enough to navigate the rivers of Britain. Vikings travel both on horseback and in ships. Contrary to popular belief, they are not dirty barbarians. They actually put a lot of value in hygiene and aesthetics such as jewelry, armor, hair, and tattoos.

โ rules for joining
1. Literacy: Anyone is welcome to join so long as you are ready to write about 2-3+ reasonably sized paragraphs per post. Matching the length of your partner is a good approach. Some posts, like starters, will probably be longer. Dialogue heavy scenes and fights can be on the shorter end.
2. Formalities: Just follow the forum rules, be nice to each other, all that jazz. This forum has matured, so I haven't run into any problems the last few years but it feels compulsory to add. Mature content (gore, sex, etc) can be skipped.
3. History: Please don't be a stickler for the history of things. This RP is for fun and I'd rather people let their imaginations roam than feel compelled to do research. This ain't school, bruh.
4. Creativity: Please come prepared to plot, throw ideas at the wall, spitball, whatever. The more ideas we all have going, the better. Characters will lots of relationships within the settlement, involving backstories, are probably going to be the most fun to rp.
5. Activity: 2020 is wack, being an adult (or close to one) is wack. I'm not going to hunt you down if you disappear. Just make an effort, please, for the sake of everyone involved c:

โ possible storylines
I'm going to run the plotlines a little differently than other roleplays, just because I think it will give people more flexibility and hopefully more options to explore what you're interested in. Instead of doing one main plot, I'm going to list a bunch which people can claim or use as inspiration for their own ideas. That way, every character has a lot going on and won't get stuck in one plot. If an rper disappears or a certain plotline is no longer interesting, we can just do something else! Just to be clear, not all of these have to be used. They're just a jumping off point, and a single character is encouraged to be involved in multiple plotlines.
Plots:
โพ Character A Freyjr and Frejya decide to raid a nearby monastery without the permission of the jarl, and they recruit a few friends (2-3, Idunn) to assist them โพ Character B has begun to distrust the jarl's intentions, and is seeking allies to lead a mutiny โพ Character C has been having strange dreams, and looks to the seers to find answers โพ Character D has made friends with danes in a nearby settlement, and agrees to help them in their raids, but they are not to be trusted โพ Character E wishes to marry the eldest of the jarl's children, but he/she must prove themselves by accomplishing increasingly difficult tasks โพ Character F and Character G are siblings, and their father, a councilmen, has gone missing. โพ Character H is caught in a love triangle with Character's I and J โพ Character K has been exiled from the settlement because of a bad omen, but some of their old friends (L and M) wish to help them reintegrate โพ Character N wishes to steal something from a nearby Saxon village which could prove very valuable โพ Character O is a female warrior from a neighboring settlement with eyes for the jarl, but another, character P, has also grabbed his attention โโโโโโโโโ

โ idunn
She woke to the sound of indistinct voices. Idunnโs eyes pried open like squeaky shutters and were flooded with pale golden light. She moaned softly and rolled onto her side. Only then did she notice something jabbing into her ribs. The sharp pain was enough to drag her into consciousness and she sat up to find she had been sleeping on her axe. It was her hilt that had been jabbing her. It lay before her unapologetically strewn across the bear skin where she had slept.
โOh yeah thatโs not a safety concern,โ she murmured under her breath.
She glanced to her left. There was the sleeping form of a great boulder of a man. He too had fallen asleep on the floor in all his clothes. His armor glinted in the morning light as his stomach rose and fell. Next to him, there was another sleeping companion, and he snored peacefully beside the waning fire pit.
Idunnโs fuzzy eyes drifted up from the floor and surveyed her surroundings. Above them was the cavernous wooden ceiling of the longhouse. To either side, two parallel rows of tables, still strewn with dishes and plates. Across the firepit, another three or four vikings lay asleep on a bed of bear skins and heavy wool blankets. Idunn had no recollection of finding her way to the floor. The last thing she remembered was resting her drunken cheek on the table as her full belly and the loud music of the hall lulled her to sleep. It had been a feast for the ages, her first since becoming a true warrior.
She yawned and gingerly pulled herself to her feet without waking any of the others. Her head was spinning. The great empty hall was quiet, but shadows of outside figures drifted across the floor. The voices from outside were loud enough and the light pure enough that she guessed it was mid morning. She ran a hand over her head and found locks of blonde hair had wriggled loose from their braids at some point in the night. She wished to go back to bed, perhaps trudge down the hill to her small house beside the water.
Instead, she elected to find her friends.

โ freyja and freyjr
โYouโve gone mad,โ Freyja hissed, glaring at a face that was identical to hers. Her twin brother met her glare just as fiercely, jaw clenched. Freyjr crossed his arms across his chest in a stubborn gesture that Freyja recognized well. She mimicked his actions, and he huffed at her.
โCome on, Freyja,โ he argued. โThis is our chance! Did you not hear the merchant? About the great monastery? Itโs a few days by horse โ less by boat!โ
โI heard,โ Freyja huffed. โI also heard father say that we were not to go raiding this season โ that our place is here, in the village. Did you not?โ
Freyjr waved a hand at that. โFatherโs just superstitious. That old seer said something to him, and now heโs paranoid. Just like he always is. This is our opportunity to make a name for ourselves, Freyja! Our first chance to experience life outside the village! Our first chance to bring honor to the gods!โ
Freyja let out a long, heavy sigh and pinched the bridge of her nose. โFreyjr,โ she told him, voice low. โI am as eager as you to experience the world. I want to make my own name out there, but there is a time and a place for these things, and I am concerned that you are running into a battle that we cannot win. We know nothing about this monastery โ nothing about the people there, whether theyโve guards or warriors. Nothing.โ
โI am not afraid, Freyja,โ he replied. โThis is our chance, and I will not squander it, no matter what you or father say.โ The siblings stared at each other for a long moment. It was as if Freyja was peering into a mirror; they were the same height, nose to nose, eye to eye. He had the same dark blue eyes as their father, brimming now with a barely checked fire of excitement. His features were like hers โ fine and more elfin in nature, much to his chagrin. Freyjr sometimes thought he looked too womanly; when they were young, the others in the village would often tease him about it. His cheekbones were high, and his eyes were framed by dark lashes. Added with his dark hair, currently drawn into a braid that ran down his back, Frejyr was quite different in looks to his father. Considering that Freyja was identical in appearance, she was also quite different to her father โ and to the others in the village, for that matter. The twins took after their mother in all by demeanor.
Freyja heaved a heavy sigh. โI suppose Iโll have to keep you from getting yourself killed.โ Freyjrโs face split into a wide grin at that, and he yanked his sister forward into a tight hug.
And then the pair froze at the sound of footsteps approaching. Freyja whirled around to meet the strangers (who were coming from the longhouse, by the direction of their footsteps).

โ idunn
The morning light was bright enough the make her eyes ache. Flecks of snow drifted through the air, though Idunn could see silver rays of light breaking through the clouds. It was cold, but it was nothing compared to her old home. She remembered the deep ache of the winters in Norway, where the cold would penetrate into her bones and settle there, as if she was freezing from the inside out. It was not so bad in England, but her nose turned pink as she marched down toward the docks.
She was halfway down before she spotted the twinsโstanding several feet apart as they always did. It was rare to find them more than that distance away from each other. From far away it was difficult to distinguish brother from sister between their dark hair and their slender builds. It always struck Idunn how different they looked from their father. The jarl was tall and fair like a birch tree. His children, by comparison, were naturally smaller and darker. One thing they shared with Brandr, however, were his fine, elfin features.
Even from a good distance, Idunn could tell that they were discussing something important. She approached with her clock wrapped around her snugly, and her pale complexion indistinguishable from the winter surroundings. As she grew closer, she could hear Freyjr and Freyja's whispered voices talking over each other. It was then that Idunn noticed the boat beside the dock equipped with the heavy shield she recognized as Freyjr's.
"Where are you two going?" asked Idunn as she strode over to meet them. She joined them as casually as one would family members. After all, the three of them had grown up in Thorne Clan together. They were practically siblings, even though Idunn was clearly the odd one out in appearance. There were never many children in the clan at one time, so they had all been forced together from a young age. Idunn had more stories which included the twins than those that did not. Most involved her tagging along on some ill-advised adventure. She was two years younger than them, a number which actually mattered when they were small. She still remembered being a pig-tailed six year-old who ran after the eight year-old, troublemaking twins. They were always getting into trouble. Never had they faced a punishment too steep to deter them.
The carefully prepared ship was enough to immediately tip Idunn off. She knew they were up to something. Her blue eyes shifted between the two of them, simultaneously suspicious and curious. Whatever they were about to do, she wanted in. Even if it meant skipping a much needed day to nurse her hangover.
"Whatever it is, we should go before the fog clears. Otherwise the whole clan will see us floating downriver."
