N E V E R M O R E ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—"
It’s like a flash of light, blinding, hot. It was relaxing before, a soft, sweet, almost lullaby-like sound. Gently, like a cradle, darkened, like a cloud.
Light thunder, it struck you down.
Those who know it call it the fall. The pull on your mind, the snapping of your mind, as you fade. It’s a very real fall, it’s very long. It’s like a bird shot from the sky. As you go, everything that made you leaves. Every memory whipped away in the speed of the fall.
This is the Fall, and as you Fall, you enter the Abyss. Everything is pitch black, because light is long gone. Everything is ash, and like a phoenix, you have burned out and died. No longer on fire, no longer alight with memories.
When you hit the ground, it’s like hitting stone. It’s painful, you can feel everything in you snap. But somehow, it fades away. You’re fine, alive, you’re breathing.
The stone under your feet is broken and cracked. The darkness is looming and cloudy, with a long dark starry abyss before you. The stone pillars around you outline a bridge.
As you look up, there’s a small, dilapidated sign, surrounded by fires. You, somehow, can read it. You don’t know how, you don’t remember learning to read.
All you remember is your name, is it even yours? Perhaps.
The fire near you, flickering torches of flame, lights the way as you read the sign.
You are in Nevermore.
A B O U T "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before" Nevermore takes place in a mysterious dimension, in which our heroes have awoken. They have no recollection of who they are, or where they are. All they know is that they do no belong. That and their name, or at least, a name that seems to fit them in the strange dimension of Nevermore.
Nevermore is strange, and has many differing locations. Some are pleasant and sweet, some are dark and horrifying. Each is never as it seems. The goal of our heroes is to survive and escape Nevermore, to find out who they are, and to find out why they are there. The secrets and clues lie in Nevermore, but it is up to our heroes to find them.
Not every clue is as it seems, and some clues are better left alone.
As a member of Nevermore, it should be known that everyone is a victim of chance and choice. Not every choice is your own, and sometimes your fate is in the hands of Nevermore itself. Not everyone is as they seem. R U L E S and C O N T E X T "Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore— Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore" In Nevermore, you should follow common Forum Rules. Also accept tallies, rolls, and decisions. While decisions like Death and becoming Lost are not going to common place, the decisions of others and chance may injure your character. This is a mystery too. As such, not every decision is up to you. Often times, the choices will be random or group made, as such, you should have respect for others.
You need to accept decisions as they come. There will be times of confusion, and times where every person will be left in the dark. Including myself and ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧ . Again, that is the purpose here.
Also note that each character lost their memories, there's no magic character who will remember things, not without you asking ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧ or I first. You should plan out the backstory to your characters slightly, but keep in mind that, for plot, some of that backstory may change. All that will be revealed for now is that every character was connected in some manner in the past. How is an entirely different story.
A lot of the story will be completed by chance, individual decisions, and group decisions from the characters. If a secret is revealed to you, it is suggested you follow what the character would most likely do. If they would most likely be secretive, have them be secretive. If they would reveal, maybe reveal some but not all. Not everything revealed to you will be as it seems, you should keep that in mind.
We suggest you join the Discord for Nevermore if you join. Here, you will be PMed when you get to make a decision by yourself. Decisions you make are up to you and you alone, this adds to the mystery.
Any other questions can be posed to the Discord. While this is based on an RPG type format, feel free to have your characters build connections with others. Feel free to have them develop into heroes, villains, or anything in-between. This is a mystery, but there's still room for development!

"Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly, Though its answer little meaning—little relevancy bore;"
To start in Nevermore, you must first join the Discord and make your character(s). You may make up to three, but all you may publicly include is their name in Nevermore, age, spirit creature, and faceclaim.
To join, each character should be associated with an animal. This will play an element in the future of this RP. When joining, you should use 35 points, and divide these according to your choosing to the following traits: Charisma, Wisdom, Agility, Strength, and Hope. Each trait should have 1-10 points, all five equaling to 35. For examples, check the Character section.
After joining, you may start out with your character(s) entering the Abyss. Depending on when you join, your character(s) may be with a group. These groups will be set apart at random. If you join at a later time, there will be another route for your character(s). If others join at the same time as you, you may be place in a group with them for the Abyss. If not, this stage might be skipped, depending on what is happening elsewhere.
In entering Nevermore, the mysterious dimension, one goes through a fall where they lose all of their memories. They are in a pitch black area, with faraway stars, and a bridge high in the sky, with an endless darkness awaiting them should they fall off the bridge once more. This specific location is called The Abyss. As the RP continues, more areas will be discovered, some at the choice of members.
L O C A T I O N S "Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor." Locations that have been explored throughout Nevermore will be listed here. Along with anything known about the Location and Clues found there. If any people are Lost the location that they were Lost in will be included her as well.
The Abyss: A void of starry sky and endless darkness. Small torches line a bridge for those who fall into Nevermore, lighting the stony path. A sign overhead reads Nevermore, cluing the heroes into their mysterious location. This was the first location discovered.
L O R E "Respite—respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore; Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!”
Here the known Lore of Nevermore will be shared. Once the clues are known, more will be revealed. Beware, for some of the clues mentioned may not be all that they seem, or perhaps, may not be whom they seem.
Nevermore: Strange Dimension where the heroes have found themselves fallen into, losing all memory of who they were before.

- - "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore"One moment, the young boy had been reaching out towards....someone, and suddenly he was separated from everything he knew. Everything he knew about them. They fell out of sight, and he was alone. Alone with fright as he kept falling and falling and falling.
Lost, confused, so very scared. Nothing made sense, and every time he felt like he felt like he knew something, it would fade back into the crevices of his mind, stripped away like a flame when it had nothing to hold onto and destroy. All he knew was terror, terror and something else, a nag on his brain, that lifted away too as he finished his plummet into the abyss.
When he landed, there wasn't as much pain as he would have expected. Something had broke his fall, though he still felt a small amount of pain as he rolled away. He grunted slightly, lifting his arm to see a tiny scratch. The small beads of blood themselves caused him to stagger as he attempted to stand, disoriented and confused.
Blood, no, no, he already didn't like it. His mind supplied what it was ever so helpfully, and he knew he needed it to live. He decided he didn't like seeing blood. Not the tiny trickle, and surely nothing else either.
Something else whispered at him that he should have died. No one survives a fall like that, but he had no idea where his mind got such an idea. Obviously people could survive, he did, and he had been falling forever.
As he stood, he took in the area around him, eyes catching the torches that lit the smooth stone surface they were on. Though strangely, ahead of this platform, other groups of people were present on other smooth surfaces. Separating them all were these grooves and bricks. Remus (for some reason, he could remember that) decided to start glancing around wildly.
Interesting indeed. Though he let off an undignified noise of terror as he spotted the thing he landed on. Was that....another person?
---
An absolute terror, that whole "falling" ordeal. She would rather not deal with such a thing. Huffing, indignantly, the girl pulled herself to a stand. She had frankly no idea what anything was, or why it was, or honestly what was anything? That didn't make sense.
Whatever, she'd ponder it later. She was in...what's the word? Oh yes, she was in pain. It was unpleasant. She had many scrapes over her body, luckily nothing seemed horribly broken. There were more pressing matters than that.
Standing from her strange, smooth platform, she noticed a boy and some dead looking person on a nearby surface, just a sew stepping stones away. She regarded them carefully, before teetering towards the edge of the bridge they were on.
A black abyss stared back at her. Perhaps staying upon this...bridge would be best, for now.
---
Upon landing, she had the instinct to roll. It seemed to help, bracing her muscled, rolling forwards. It only helped slightly, though she had a horrible feeling of pain in her ankle. It wasn't broken however, so that much was nice.
Her gaze didn't meet the path at first, instead, she glanced at the torchlights over head, bright blue eyes flickering to and from the flames. Somewhat calmed, somewhat panicked, the pessimist in her won out.
"What's going on?" She whispered in horror, voice croaked as she stepped back. Fear, yes, she was scared. Her head hurt so very much.
Calm down, Azareth, She thought to herself, unsure why such a name seemed to come to her, but deciding not to question it, Freaking out will do you no good.
---
You have fallen into Nevermore, with no memory of who you are or why you are here. You have a few choices, but they aren't ones you can choose to select from...yet. Instead, you notice a strange stone path. The places you and the others have landed, while separated out, are rather smooth stony areas. The places between are uneven, jagged pillars of bricks and stones. That's...odd?
There's torches near you, and that darkness under the bridge look like a night sky. You don't remember night skies, but...it seems to fit in your head. The bridge leads to an odd looking building much further down in the distance, and on the other end...it looks like pretty much nothing. A vast expanse into darkness.
Well, you ought to get to it then. As of now, you are free to make your own decisions, there's not yet a set course or path for you. You'll just have to learn as you go. Remember your name though, that'll do you some good.
And remember that strange sign, Nevermore.

Allelujah, Tilly, Dex The fall had lasted for ages. Darkness and that pit in your stomach as you crested and dropped on a roller coaster. Wind whipped through her hair as she continued and continued to descend. What had happened? How did this happen? Did I trip? Then pain. It hurt for sure. It hurt a lot. Her wrists had braced her fall, like one always tries to do when they fall. Those ached now. The air was thrown from her lungs and her eyes pinned themselves shut to try and process what her body had gone through. It wasn't fun. That definitely wasn't fun. As her lungs started to pull air back into her body, she carefully pushed herself up. Wincing at the pain that moved through her wrists and up her forearms. Once sat up she opened her eyes. Allelujah. It wasn't a grateful prayer. That must've been her name. Almost like a distant call of someone trying to reach her. Allelujah. It didn't feel quite right though. Like it was the name was too much. Too long. Too formal. "Lulu" she murmured to herself. Cradling her hands to her chest. "That's right." Lulu nodded and then finally began to take in her surroundings. There were others. A wave of gratefulness washed over her. Then fear. Should she trust these others? Did they know what had happened? Were they falling like she had been? Lulu's head ached then and she pinched her eyes shut once more. Deep breaths, she had to take deep breaths. She had to calm down. It didn't feel right to panic in the face of unknown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as she'd landed. The smaller blonde quickly pulled herself to her feet. Though she favored one leg over the other. That fall had hurt. She had no clue how long she'd been falling, but that sure had hurt. Shouldn't she have died though? How long had she fallen for? How high was that from? Her eyes moved up to see if there was something above for her to have taken that fall from. Nothing. She scoffed. Then her gave moved around. Trying to take everything in. Smooth stone platforms. Others nearby. The only light from these torches. The way the flames danced on their perches made it hard to distinguish anything else around her. But there were other forms for sure. Others were here. Then she spotted that structure. A strange building off in the distance, pillars and stony paths between her and the building. Her first instinct was to run towards it. But then that hesitant and thoughtful side warned her otherwise. Patience Tilly. Another scoff. Fine. I'll wait for now. Tilly's gaze moved around again taking in each of the others here. Some seemed older....but how old was she? Some were men, girls, others all around. How many were there? Did she know them. Had they all come from the same place? There was nothing when she tried to pull those memories. Absolutely nothing. Just her name. Or what seemed to fit her as her name. Tilly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as he hit the ground the boy huffed and growled. He rolled to his back and stared at the icy dark above. Seeing flickering out of the corners of his eyes. He tried to remember back. How the hell did I get here? Think. Think Dex. Arching a brow at that name. Dex? What sort of name was that. Huffing once more he pulled himself to his feet. He hadn't been hurt too badly. Which seemed....odd. Didn't it? No maybe not. Maybe this was right. Nodding, it had to be. He couldn't not know where he was. That was just preposterous. Of course he knew where he was, Dex always knew what was going on. Brushing a hand through his hair and scratching his head, he did just as all the others seemed to be doing. Taking it all in. Assessing. Confirming. And concluding. Though what was there to conclude? He recalled nothing. He knew none of these people. Their face were all new. It was as if he'd been thrown from where ever or who ever he was before and into this....place. Dex hated it. None of this sat right with him and it brought a bit of a flush of frustration to his cheeks.

Olvido, Dziki, Sintika
Falling... That was the only thing he could feel. Air was rushing past him, as if it was eager to leave to leave him behind. To leave him alone in the darkness... The further he fell, the worse it felt. That incredible loneliness, as if he might be the only thing in this world. It hurt. He curled into himself, cringing in pain and squeezing his eyes closed.
I don't want to be alone.
Bam! He crashed into the floor with a loud grunt of pain. After several moments, he opened his eyes and stared up at the... sky? It was dark and eerie, though it was the stars that really drew his gaze. There he lay, with his back against the cold stone floor, staring up at the distant specks of light. Why must they be so far away..? The sound of shifting and shuffling reached his ears and he abruptly sat up before wincing. "Ah-!" He reached behind him and rubbed his lower back. That was when the firelight caught his gaze. He froze and stared at the flickering movement. It seemed like it was almost alive, filling him with a sort of warm glow. A warm glow of hope. The firelight seemed to illuminate a sign of some sort. Letters were scrawled across it. "N- Never- Nevermore..." he read, blinking in surprise at his own voice. He swallowed. "Nevermore," he repeated in a whisper. He didn't know what exactly it meant, but it gave him the chills. Whispers and murmurs drew his attention to the creatures shifting in the firelight. It was... other people. Other people like him. He looked down at his hands, then lifted his gaze to gaze over the others that were gathered. He felt a sense of relief. It seemed he wasn't alone after all. --- "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- Mmph!"
Dziki landed hard, bellyflopping onto the stone, and silence followed for a few seconds. He slapped his hands down and lifted his face, gasping for breath. Blood dripped from his face and onto the stone below him. "Huh?" Dziki shoved himself to his feet and touched his face. In the flickering firelight he could see the red gleam of blood. "What is this?!" he exclaimed. Now that the original shock wore off, his nose began to throb. Actually, his entire front began to sting and ache. "Ow!" He cupped his nose with his hands, looking around angrily at his surroundings as if he could find someone to blame. --- Sintika squeaked when it began, but it was as if the rushing wind stole her breath. What was happening? She was so confused. Everything was a blur- No, not even that. It was as if everything had been cut away, leaving her with nothing. She was... nothing. She hit the stone feet first. Her legs buckled and she tumbled a short ways along the platform. When she came to a stop, she sat up, looking around in fear. There were other people here. What was going on? She subconsciously brushed her cheek with a hand and her fingers came back wet with tears. Tears? Had she been crying? Looking around at her frightening and strange surroundings, she realized she still felt like crying. Swallowing, and tightening her lips, she looked around for something to hide herself. Too frightened to actually go anywhere, she used a hood she found on the back of her knitted sweater. She pulled it over her head and quietly observed the others, all the while hoping that nobody noticed her.

Lukas Life has a funny way of ripping the rug of happiness right from under you. One minute Lukas had been laughing and having the time of his life. Suddenly, he found himself falling endlessly into a pit of darkness. Confusion, panic and fear coursed through his veins and all he could do was stare at the darkness above him. Worst feeling of all was a cold empty feeling in his chest. Something was missing but, he had no idea what it was. He ends up hitting the ground and winces in pain. Lukas takes a moment not wanting to move before sitting up and rubbing the back of his head. "What the hell?" He muttered as he starts looking all around. Lukas takes notice of a few things. One there appeared to be other people around and second a sign that said 'Nevermore' Where am I? Who are these people? Wait who am I? Lukas blinked as he tries really hard to remember anything about himself. ~~ Regina Regina finds herself falling face first into the ground. She grits her teeth in pain before slowly putting herself up to her feet. She attempts to steady herself as her limbs begin to ache. Regina looks around as she tries to figure out where she was. There appeared to be others but who were they? She frowned unsure of what to do at the moment. Seeing the nearby sign, she decides to slowly walk over to get a better look at it. "Nevermore." She mumbles to herself. Well that's rather dreary.

Arcadia
She seemed to have been saying something to someone, but the words were ripped both from her mouth and her memory, to be replaced only by blackness and falling.
Suddenly the weightlessness was all she knew, the rush of an unseen air on her skin and the flip of her stomach as she plummeted toward the ground.
She landed unceremoniously but without much injury, the young woman scrambling to her feet to examine her body in the flickering golden light of the torches. Only some scrapes, she noted as tiny beads of blood gleaned ruby-like on her skin.
“What...?” she murmured
She couldn’t remember anything. Her mind only seemed to helpfully supply her with information, drip feeding her as if explaining something to a toddler. This is blood, you should know about blood. That golden light is fire from the torches.. She knew that fire was life-giving but should be respected.
But the important stuff like who she was? That she didn’t know. Or at least she didn’t know until her mind fed her one last scrap.
Arcadia
What kind of name was that?
Still, there were more important matters to attend to. She looked from the smooth rocky platform on which she had landed to the other figures around her, who seemed to have had varying degrees of luck in the way they had fallen. She searched their faces for a moment, desperate to find something, anything, that she might recognise. But it was pointless. All it did was make her mind ache and feel foggier than ever.
Finally, her eyes drifted to the sign, its careful lettering visible in the torchlight and engraving themselves indelibly on Arcadia’s mind as the only information she had so far.
“Nevermore.”
—————
Maira
Her lungs drew in rushing oxygen like a gasp as she tumbled towards the ground, reaching and grasping for air that would not support her.
Her collision with the ground was perhaps not graceful, but it could be worse; she observed only a scraped knee. It would bruise, most likely, but other than a throbbing ache it wasn’t too painful.
She rose to her feet, already finding that her body felt confident. Like she could leap and trust herself to reach the other side. Like her body would always take her where she needed to go, like she knew it could get her to do what she needed to do.
It moved with precision and confidence, shoulders back. Core strong. If only she could remember what she had done before any of this she might be able to explain these details.
Once on her feet, the girl took in the environment around her, eyes scanning over the torches that shone the only light visible to her over the scene. She wasn’t alone, either; there were other people here but she quickly discovered that she didn’t (or couldn’t) recognise any of them.
She didn’t remember anything, not even her name.
Maira
As soon as she thought about not knowing her name, the name popped into her head as if she should have known it all along. Maira. That was a nice name, but without her memories she felt as disconnected from it as she did everything else.
Finally, though, she took in the sign. It was like it had been left there for them all to find. A little clue, the only thing they were allowed to know yet.
They were in Nevermore.
That didn’t mean anything to her, but at least it was a start.
—————
Miles
Some instinct told him to roll, and he did so, falling from blackness to suddenly landing on a stony area of ground. His landing had thus been fairly smooth, the young man barely even getting a single little scrape, though he had made a little rip in his clothes at his knees.
His mind felt full of the same blackness he had fallen through. He tried to reach through that void with the hope of grabbing onto even a single memory, a single point of reference to anchor him, but found nothing.
Nothing except a name.
Miles.
Miles. He could live with Miles, that was a decent name. He’d kind of hoped for something cooler, like Ace, or Flash-
Not the time. Really, really not the time.
Some of the other people around him - because indeed he was not on his own - seemed to have had worse luck than him and gotten hurt in the fall. Comfortingly, though, they all looked just as confused as he was. Which was kind of nice - at least he wasn’t the only one with no idea what the hell was going on. The only unfortunate part was he didn’t recognise any of these people.
“Hey, you guys okay?” he offered, not to anyone in particular but just generally to the room around him. It was good to make sure nobody was seriously hurt; not that he’d know what to do if they were.
His gaze finally moved to the sign that seemed to have everyone else so enraptured, brow furrowing as he noted the word written on there.
Nevermore.
What the hell did that mean? Nevermore wasn’t a place. Right?

- "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore"
---
Ever since hitting the ground, the girl with the strange smoky looking black hair with the silver mixed in had taken notice of those people surrounding her. A skittish looking young girl, is one the girl took notice of. Stuffing her hands into a jean jacket she had, the girl retracted her hand, pulling out a small note. She screwed her eyes at the singed thing, before stuffing it back in her pocket.
It was no help at all. Best not to even question it. She spotted that young girl again, near her, a hood now over her head. She scoffed, unwilling to spend time worrying over whoever that girl was. No time to waste, none at all.
Instead, she glowered at the stones and torches. Feeling a small bout of childishness, she went to start walking forward, though she paused when her foot landed on one of the stones. Immediately, the stone sunk down lower, and she backtracked immediately, barely missing a pillar of flame that seemed to shoot out from one of the torches. Back onto the flat stone, she rubbed at her temples in annoyance.
"Just great." Man her voice sounded odd, she didn't remember it sounding like that. She didn't remember it at all, to be fair.
---
Azareth jumped when the smoky-haired girl stepped on the stone and jumped back, scorching flames missing the older girl by mere inches. She scuttled back on her own platform. Those same stones separated her from any of these other people. Some people were on these platforms together, the smoky haired girl was with the skittish hooded one, and that curly haired young boy seemed to have landed on another guy.
Azareth was alone on hers, just how it should be, and she shook her head to dislodge that ideal. She'd rather not consider that haunting thought at the moment. She would rather get out of there.
Her gaze snapped towards the boy who asked if they were okay. Okay is subjective, her mind helpfully supplied, we're very far from okay. Though she decided not to voice that, instead just fixing him with a look, a plain one, a bit. "I don't think anyone is particularly dead." She scouted the area to assure that, some people looked a little close to be fair, "But I don't think we've reached the standard of doing okay."

SINTIKA Sintika held on to the sides of her hood, tugging it further over her face. She peeked under the lip of her hood at the scary black haired woman walking around on their shared platform. Negativity seemed to pour from the woman like a thick, dark cloud with intensity that frightened Sintika to the core. To her relief, the woman didn't approach her. Instead, she seemed to be leaving the platform. The woman stepped onto one of the rocks, but wait- Something wasn't right. Fwoosh! Sintika gasped as a pillar of flame narrowly missed the smokey haired woman. A sick feeling churned in Sintika's gut. What was this? Those flames were clearly something dangerous. Something meant to deter them from going any further. She pulled her legs closer to herself. --- "Hey are you guys okay?"
DZIKI Dziki's head snapped towards the voice, a snarl on his face. He removed his hands from his bloody nose and spread them apart. "Okay? Okaaaay?! Do you think this is okay?!" he challenged, stomping over to the edge of his platform. Fwoosh! Dziki's gaze flashed over to see some wispy haired lady narrowly missing a plume of flame. He glanced down at the stones beyond the platform, merely a step away. While he was distracted, it seemed a redhead had begun to address Mr. Okay. "Tch! What I really want to know, is who did this, and what is going on here!" He shouted, pointing into the air. The first thing he could remember, was falling from the sky. There was nothing he could remember beyond that point, but he honestly didn't care what happened beforehand, if it was anything at all. What he DID know, was that he was currently in a very bad mood and he really wanted to smash someone in the face. There had to be someone to blame for all this, there always was... but now that he thought of it, no examples came to mind. No matter. Now, he just had to deal with all the idiots around him. He'd take them all on if he had to. --- OLVIDO People seemed to be talking more now, one fellow was asking if they were okay. Any response he could have made was cut short by an angry sounding man with messy hair and a bloody face. A man who was yelling across the platforms, edging on hysterical. Deciding not to say anything quite yet, the man with an afro pushed himself to his feet with a grunt and a wince. He was wearing a short-sleeve plaid shirt and black pants. His left arm from the elbow down was black and silver. It looked like a sort of long metal glove. He didn't take much notice to it, because it felt like a part of him. Besides, the people around him were all different colours. What would be so different about having a black arm? The afroed man brushed off his pants and took another look around at the people around him. Fwoosh! His eyes widened when flames burst out from one of the torches, narrowly missing a girl on another platform. "Are you alright, miss?" He asked instinctively, surprising himself at how easily the words simply flowed off his tongue as it was something he said all the time. To his relief, she looked to be relatively unharmed. Somewhere behind her was another girl sitting on the ground, her knees pulled close and her hood casting her face in shadow.
