is that Yellowfang is really ugly.
now, like, hear me out.
as far as female characters go, she's one of the few unattractive mains, isn't she?
Ragged fur, yellow teeth, flat squashed face, not to mention the personality of a cactus. She's an old lady even when she's a teenager.
Compare her to other female pivotal characters, those who were mains in a series or had their own super edition: Squirreflight, Leafpool, Sandstorm, Cinderpelt, Leafstar, Spottedleaf, Silverstream, Feathertail, Dovewing, Bluestar etc etc - Regardless of your opinion on them as characters, design wise, we can all agree that they tend to be described as 'sleek' or 'beautiful' or are compared to powerful and stunning natural features, like fire or water. They're all attractive by regular standards and all end up with one, or more, love stories.
I'm not here to cut down other female characters, I'm a big fan of most of the ones I just mentioned, but in all mainstream media, the main characters tend to be conventionally attractive, and if they're not, they don't get love interests. Ugly characters are usually punch lines, not heroes. Or they do get love interests after going through a period of hating their appearance and either a) learning to love it or changing it to feel happier.
Yellowfang does neither of these things.
Side note, but that's one thing I actually quite like about Warriors, physically marred or disabled characters tend to have happy endings, in the majority. Crookedjaw, Deadfoot, Brightheart - they all end up with families and mates, so they break this rule most other shows and books have where only the pretty are worth a second glance. But they all have personalities that make us love them and want to root for them; Crookedjaw is diligent and hard working, Deadfoot is loyal and patient, Brightheart is compassionate and intelligent, whereas Yellowfang is ugly and abrasive.
She is literally the opposite of allure.
and she gets a love plot.
I don't like Ragged x Yellow
it was forced and not that healthy, and tragic in the end, but Yellowfang did have someone who fawned over her for some amount of time, and thought she was beautiful, and that's kind of... cute?
I would have loved it if the rest of the clan respected and feared Raggedstar but he was basically Thrushpelt over Yellowfang (tough characters who melt for their sweethearts is a personal weakness of mine.)
The Erins however had other plans "lol no he's gonna be a jerk and next to nobody will be sad he's dead" and I think they missed a trick. I think a gooey, sloppy, old-school romantic relationship between Yellowfang and Raggedstar would've been interesting for both of their characters, and made it super tragic when Brokenstar happened and everything falls apart.
Give us a secret sweet side to to of the toughest, roughest characters and then tear it to pieces, make us loathe Brokenstar even more.
though anything would've improved Yellowfang's secret let's be honest
so, I guess this is just a long winded way of saying, as much as I hate that pairing, I am glad Yellowfang got love at one point in her life, because it was refreshing to see the gross and rude female character get love without having to change her personality or appearance for it.
