My theory for the way this book could end is with Bramblestar's death. Ashfur then possess Squirrelflight and drags her to the Dark Forest. That's if they want to make it hella dark tho

I think Squirrel needs to let Bramble go
Alderheart and Lionblaze are willing, and they're his sons. I feel like Bramblestar would be willing to let go of his body if it meant slowing Ashfur down
Who is freaking evil af
I like that he makes a dig about Violetshine having a non-clan cat as a mate. Man, he's salty

You never know. idk if i even want him to be their dad because of how mean they used to be to root...and we dont even see harry interact with them (as far as i remember) and leafstar doesnt act like they are her kin or has any special affection for them...
i'd bet if leafstar's only remaining kit had his own kits, she'd act differently since her other direct family members all died (billy, storm, and fire).

Okay wow, that scene really was just as creepy as it sounded. Awesome! Again, this is perfect for Halloween. And wow, Hawkwing! Still don't care for you, but still, wow. As for who Nectarsong's mate is, the cats clearly don't care about inbreeding and neither do I as far as this series in concerned. Besides, Dewspring's a great cat.

Chapter 19: Rootspring
Rootspring pads into the camp, as his clanmates awake. Leafstar is eyeing her guests thoughtfully. Dewspring and Nectarsong are watching Beekit and Beetlekit. It's the kits' first day outside. Beekit begins running around, almost crashing into Snow until Dewspring stops her, and carries her away, but Snow seems amused by it. Rootspring can hardly believe that last night, their camp was filled with angry spirits. He shakes his pelt and wonders if Hawkwing, Frecklewish, and Alderheart have finished questioning Ashfur yet. He looks around for Bristlefrost, but doesn't see her. He thinks that if they lived in the same Clan, they'd hunt together, eat together, and even wake up in the same nest together. Sunrise interrupts his thoughts, and says he did well last night. Rootspring thanks her, but wishes they could have found out why the spirits were so angry. Sunrise says he can try next time, and she reveals that he doesn't need the Sisters to use "the gift". He says he doesn't think he can manage so many spirits on his own, but she says he just needs the strength to do so. Rootspring asks how he can even strengthen a power he doesn't understand, and Sunrise explains that if he reaches out to something of theirs, whether it be a nest or a tuft of fur, he can reach out to them.
Sunrise demonstrates how he can use the power on his own (basically the same digging into the earth stance he did while summoning the ghosts and helping Moon), and as Rootspring does it, he feels his heartbeat slow, and Sunrise tells him to feel his heart press against the earth with each breath. Rootspring feels like he's aware of every hair on his pelt, and feels like his heart is falling into rhythm. Sunrise asks if he feels it, and when Rootspring confirms, she says that's all he needs to do. He asks if it will be enough, and she says he needs to open his heart, to let power flow through it, and trust he'll find a way. Rootspring says he'll try, and Sunrise tells him it's time the Sisters left to make a camp of their own nearby. As the other Sisters begin to leave, Squirrelflight hurries to Sunrise and asks if they can try to find Bramblestar one last time. Sunrise gently tells her that if he didn't appear last time, he likely won't this time. Squirrelflight says they have to try, and Sunrise says they won't be far away. Snow thanks Leafstar for the shelter, and remarks they've made the place into a fine home. Sunrise tells Squirrelflight that she knows where she can find them if she needs them. Sunrise is the last of the Sisters to leave, but she beckons Rootspring just before she leaves. As he comes to see her, she tells him to not let go of Bristlefrost, as he's in love with her, and she's in love with him. Rootspring tries to deny, but she tells him that it's quite obvious, and she doesn't understand why he needs to lie about it. Rootspring says it's complicated. Sunrise shrugs, and says that the Clans seem to make the easiest thing always seen difficult, but tells him to take care of himself as she leaves. Rootspring then thinks that he needs to talk to her before the ThunderClan cats leave, and goes to see Squirrelflight, who is talking with Leafstar.
Leafstar tells Squirrelflight that she must see now that they have no choice. Squirrelflight objects that they don't even know if Ashfur will do something, but she's cut off by Leafstar who says that the best chance they have now, is to kill Ashfur. Squirrelflight asks what if it doesn't work, and they'd have killed Bramblestar for nothing if Ashfur can just leave Bramblestar's body, and what's stopping Ashfur from just stealing another body. Rootspring flattens his ears, not wanting to hear any more of the conversation. He spots Bristlefrost, and asks her to come with him. He leads her behind the warriors den, up a grassy slope, to where beech trees crowd the top of the slope. Bristlefrost asks if something is wrong, and Rootspring says he loves her, and he thinks she loves him, and he wants to be together. Bristlefrost is speechless, and Rootspring reiterates that he loves her. Bristlefrost says that she loves him too, but says their feelings don't matter and they can't be together. Rootspring says that it does matter what they feel, and the Sisters think Clan rules are stupid, and so does he, and he thinks they make each other stronger, and asks if she agrees, and why shouldn't they be together. Bristlefrost asks how, and Rootspring says they can join a Clan. Bristlefrost says she knows he's asking her to leave ThunderClan, which she can't do, as they need her and her kin is there. Rootspring says he won't leave SkyClan. Rootspring argues that SkyClan is stronger, since ThunderClan has been torn apart by Ashfur and is weak. Their warriors are leaving, and their leader doesn't even have nine lives, and asks what if ThunderClan will never recover from this.
Bristlefrost gets angry, saying that it's not a reason to leave. She says she cannot abandon her Clan when it's in trouble, and if Bramblestar is truly gone, then she, and the other warriors, need to do everything they can to rebuild and help Squirrelflight grieve. She adds that she promised Spotfur she would help raise her kits, and says that she needs to stay in ThunderClan. Rootspring hates that she's thinking this way, but knows she's right. Bristlefrost asks if she's willing to leave SkyClan for her. Rootspring thinks, but isn't sure he's willing to abandon Tree, Violetshine, Needleclaw, and the cats who raised him. He quietly says he'll have to think about it. She nods and says she understands, but says they should head back now. They go different ways to not arouse suspicion. As Rootspring enters back into camp, he scents Hawkwing, and realizes he must be back from interrogating Ashfur. Hawkwing, Frecklewish, and Alderheart are reporting to Squirrelflight and Leafstar, explaining that Ashfur refused to tell them anything and didn't even seem scared when Hawkwing and Tigerstar could have easily killed him. Squirrelflight flinces, and says that Ashfur obviously doesn't care what happens to Bramblestar's body. Leafstar says that Ashfur is no use to them now. Squirrelflight says he's keeping Bramblestar's body alive. Leafstar replies that Squirrelflight keeps saying that, and says that she thinks it's time for the ThunderClan cats to return home. Squirrelflight thanks her for sheltering them and allowing the Sisters to stay briefly. As Bristlefrost follows the patrol, she avoids Rootspring's gaze, and he wonders why deciding to leave SkyClan isn't an easier decision. He pads towards the fresh-kill pile. Tree might understand if he left, but wonders if Violetshine and Needleclaw would.
He's so lost in though that he doesn't see Beekit and Beetlekit start darting between his legs. Rootspring, caught off-guard, tells them to slow down. Beekit asks who Rootspring is, and Rootspring thinks about how he was bullied by his denmates as an apprentice, and how he could possibly tell two young kits that he can see ghosts. He introduces himself, and both kits are amazed, revealing they know him to be the one to bring the Sisters to SkyClan and he can see ghosts. Rootspring prepares to see fear in them, but he is surprised when they're amazed by him. Beekit says that it's really cool, and Rootspring asks if it is, and Beetlekit says that it is, and he wishes he could see ghosts. Beekit pushes in front of Beetlekit and asks if she can be his apprentice. Beetlekit nudges her out of the way and says he wants to be his apprentice. Beekit says she said it first, but Beetlekit says he's older, and the two begin to play fight and tussle around the camp. Rootspring watches them happily, and he's never imagined he'd become a warrior that kits want as a mentor, and he thinks that his powers aside, he may be able to help his clan differently. He sees that the Clan is still lively. Hawkwing is organizing patrols. Kitescratch and Turtlecrawl are clearing out old bedding. He thinks to himself that he's embraced his father's strange heritage, and it's made him a better SkyClan warrior. Now his Clan not only needed him, but wants him, and he wonders if he could ever leaving the place where he belongs.

Squirrel sweetie... just let Bramble go. He's toxic for you.
Rootspring and Bristlefrost just annoys me more now lol. They're both boring, although Bristle is more boring imo. Their romance sucks.
I am a bit disappointed that Nectar's mate isn't Harrybrook. Leafstar's last kit needs some attention. But Dew is a good cat so I can't be mad at that.

Aw, the kits are adorable! But Sunrise, you're sweet, but no. Again though, I'm glad Rootspring and Bristlefrost are at least having an actual conversation regarding their relationship. They're being mature about it, which is more than I can say for most of the other forbidden relationships in this series. I also like how they're basically differentiating the difference between a crush and actual love with them.

This is giving me Leafpool/Crowfeather vibes tbh (but Bristle and Root seem to realize that their clan needs them and they're loyal to their Clan above all and have important roles in it, so it's like they're both Leafpool?) I don't know, watch them also run away together for 1 day anyways after an extremely rushed romance plot lol. (And I say that as someone who doesn't mind either pairing.)

That said, Bristlefrost's feelings definitely came out of nowhere and it'd be interesting if she was projecting her old feelings towards Stemleaf onto him without even realizing it (seriously, she's not a bad cat), but I feel like that'd be giving the writers way too much credit.

So I'm reading through chapter 20 and I think we've found out what Daisy's novella is about: "Daisy, it seemed, had gone to help Smoky with his new kits while Bristlefrost had been fetching the Sisters. She hoped it was just to help Smoky, and not because Daisy, too, was thinking about leaving ThunderClan for good. With Spotfur's kits coming soon, Bristlefrost would feel better know that the cat who'd helped raise generations of ThunderClan kits would still be around"

Chapter 20: Bristlefrost
Bristlefrost looks at the camp entrance and is frustrated that she didn't wake up earlier to join Lionblaze, Cherryfall, and Bumblestripe on patrol. Alderheart tells Bristlefrost that if she's bored, she can help Flamepaw and Baypaw clean out the bedding. Brackenfur mutters that he doesn't think they need any more help. Baypaw grunts that they don't, and that Cloudtail and Brightheart are giving them plenty of advice. Brightheart pops her head out and reminds Baypaw to take the old bedding to outside the camp. Cloudtail calls from the elders den to bring ferns, as bracken is too prickly for Brightheart. Brightheart calls back that bracken stays fresh longer. Baypaw rolls his eyes and drags the old bedding away. Bristlefrost thinks that the whole of ThunderClan is trying to stay busy. Mousewhisker and Finleap are clearing stones that had fallen from a rock tumble. (There's actually a mistake here, Larksong is said to be clearing stones with them despite him dying in SQH. Oops)
Twigbranch and Birchfall inspect the camp wall for holes, while Dewnose and Poppyfrost help Jayfeather fix holes in the medicine den, and Spotfur creates a nest in the nursery. Bristlefrost thinks of how Daisy left (the text I posted earlier) and hopes she returns. She wonders what Rootspring is doing, and if he's considering leaving SkyClan to be with her, but she feels wrong for wishing him to make the choice to leave his Clan.
Bristlefrost looks at the fresh-kill pile, and it's still full from yesterday. Lionblaze has organized so many hunting patrols that there isn't a point in even sending any out today, but the warm weather means the prey will spoil easily. Spotfur finishes her nest, and concludes that it needs moss. Plumstone offers to get some, but Bristlefrost offers to get it herself. She hasn't been able to settle down in ThunderClan since leaving SkyClan the other day. Squirrelflight has hardly left her den, and Lionblaze is sullen. If Ashfur's spirit left Bramblestar's body, they needed to do something, and it'd be crazy to wait for Ashfur to make the first move. As she leaves camp, she runs into Lionblaze, Bumblestripe, and Cherryfall. Lionblaze asks where she's going. Bristlefrost says Spotfur and Plumstone need moss. Lionblaze tells her that with Ashfur's spirit potentially out there, he doesn't want cats to be alone outside of camp.
Bristlefrost suggests she take a patrol, knowing that there must be a few willing to step out of camp for bit. Lionblaze has also noticed that cats are anxious, and tries to keep them as busy as possible. Lionblaze agrees to her idea, and searches the camp for a cat to go with her. His eyes land on Bumblestripe, and Bumblestripe is irritated with the thought of going on a moss gathering patrol. Lionblaze tells him that there's more to Clan life than hunting and marking borders. Bumblestripe huffs "But moss gathering?". Cherryfall speaks up, saying there's more important problems to be dealing with. Lionblaze implores she means Ashfur. Cherryfall confirms, and reminds him that they were going to wait until the Sisters were consulted. Lionblaze flexes his claws and agrees, saying they should be dealing with him. Bumblestripe mews that should just get on with it. Bristlefrost feels anxious, seeing how ready to kill Ashfur Lionblaze seems. She tells him that they wait for Squirrelflight to decide. Lionblaze scowls and says "Squirrelflight's clearly not ready to make a decision. She's trying her best, but her loyalties are divided. And truly, she's not a real-"
Squirrelflight overhears this, and steps out of her den. She tells Lionblaze to finish his thought. The Clan has stopped what they were doing to hear Lionblaze's response. Lionblaze says that she's not a real leader. Squirrelflight pads towards him, asking what would make her a real leader. Lionblaze replies that StarClan needs to give her nine lives. Squirrelflight asks how they can do that if they're not even there. Lionblaze says that getting rid of Ashfur might solve that problem. He adds that if they can drive out Ashfur, Bramblestar can get back into his body and things will go back to normal. Squirrelflight says that Hawkwing reported that Ashfur has left Bramblestar's body more than once, and Bramblestar hasn't been able to get back in.
Lionblaze's tail droops, and asks if it means it's truly gone for good. Spotfor comes over, and tells Squirrelflight she knows what's it like to lose a mate, and how hard it is, but Squirrelflight may need to accept that Bramblestar might not come back. Squirrelflight growls that she needs to be sure, and if they kill Bramblestar's body, then Bramblestar may never be able to come back at all, and it's too great a risk. Lionblaze says that it's an even greater risk to do nothing at all, yowling at her. Cherryfall agrees, saying Ashfur could be planning anything. Bumblestripe says the more they delay, the more time it gives Ashfur. Lilyheart says they don't know for certain that Bramblestar is gone, asking Lionblaze why he needs to rush it. Bumblestripe snaps that she has no proof that he isn't gone. Bristlefrost says they could just wait a little longer, but Mousewhisker claims they've waiting far too long already. Squirrelflight calls for them to be quiet, and she gives a speech which I quite like:
"We're not the enemy! We shouldn't be fighting one another. We're ThunderClan. We protect one another. We're bound by kinship and loyalty and the warrior code. Some of you chose ThunderClan. All of you have fought for your Clan, even when everything seemed hopeless. Some of you are preparing to bring new life into ThunderClan. Kits need to be protected and loved and taught how to live as warriors, and I know they will be, because in ThunderClan we protect those who need to be helped. We live, not for ourselves, but for one another. Everyone of you has put your Clan first before yourself in the past. No matter how young or inexperienced, you've all fought to protect your Clan. The bond that we've shared will not be broken now. We've all been through so much."
The Clan seems to relax a bit, knowing that Squirrelflight is right, but Bristlefrost thinks that this peace will only be temporary. Lionblaze pads up to the highledge where Squirrelflight spoke, and says she's right. Ashfur is the enemy, and they mustn't lose sight on that. Bumblestripe agrees, but says they still need to do something about him. Squirrelflight closes her eyes, and agrees. Cherryfall and Lionblaze bring up that Squirrelflight did promise that if the Sisters failed to find Bramblestar, they would consider killing Ashfur. Squirrelflight lowers her head, and concedes that she did agree, but she won't be the one to call for Bramblestar's murder. Lionblaze looks at her, and says that perhaps they need to consult the other leaders, and if Ashfur has been leaving Bramblestar's body, they need to act quickly. Squirrelflight hesitates, and says that whatever the other leaders decide, she will abide by their final choice. Bristlefrost feels sorry for Squirrelflight, as she's beginning to realize the grim reality of the situation, but she can't read Squirrelflight's expression. Spotfur begins to pad back to the nursery, but she begins to tremble. Bristlefrost asks if she's alright, and Spotfur replies she's just anxious. Thriftear rushes to help her, and the two help Spofur into the nursery. Bristlefrost is shocked on how close the Clan came to fighting. Bramblestar is still missing, and so is Thornclaw, Snaptooth, Flywhisker, Flipclaw, and Graystripe. She wonders if Spotfur really wants to raise her kits here, if it hardly feels like the same Clan she grew up in. Bristlefrost doesn't want to lose hope, but she doesn't know how to hang onto it when they've lost so much and things seem so bleak. She thinks that maybe Rootspring was right about ThunderClan, and wonders if it was time to leave and find a home elsewhere.

If there's one thing this series keeps being great at, it's speeches.

Chapter 21: Shadowsight
Shadowsight is trying to gather herbs for Ashfur's wounds, but is annoyed that he has to go through Puddleshine and Mothwing first just to do so. As Puddleshine is helping Shadowsight retrieve what he needs, Yarrowleaf asks for some help with her cough. She notices the herbs that Shadowsight has, and asks what they're for. Shadowsight knows she is aware they're for Ashfur, but he says they're for Bramblestar's sake. Yarrowleaf glares at him, and says that Tigerstar and Hawkwing should have just killed him. Shadowsight knew he was the only cat who wanted to protect Ashfur, but he's surprised to hear his Clanmates wish death on Ashfur out loud. Yarrowleaf says that they would all be safer if Ashfur was gone, but Shadowsight says he's still a medicine cat, and he has to try and save Bramblestar's body. Yarrowleaf says that Bramblestar is long gone, and he's just healing a dead cat walk around in his fur. Shadowsight doesn't know how to respond. If Bramblestar can't return, then Ashfur would have won. Shadowsight tells Puddleshine he'll come back later for the extra herbs and leaves with what he has. It's sunhigh, and most warriors are on patrol. Shadowsight scents ThunderClan, and wonders why they would be here. He spots Squirrelflight, Lionblaze, Bristlefrost, and Cherryfall at the entrance of the camp, talking to Tigerstar.
Shadowsight ducks outside, trying to remember what Lightleap taught him about stalking prey so he can listen silently. Lionblaze is reiterating to Tigerstar that the Sisters couldn't find Bramblestar, and Cherryfall says that he's gone, and not coming back. Cherryfall's words seem to make Squirrelflight shrink beneath her pelt. Lionblaze growls that they have to act, because if what the Sisters say is true, it won't be long before Ashfur is back causing trouble again, and they need to kill him. Tigerstar mews that he's ready to kill Ashfur if they are. Squirrelflight pads forward and says she understands why he's so scared of what Ashfur will do. Tigerstar growls that Ashfur doesn't scare him. Squirrelflight says Ashfur scares her, but she can't let them kill Bramblestar without defending him one last time. His spirit may still be near, and if they kill his body, she may never see him again, her voice shaking. Tigerstar looks puzzled, and says he thought they were going to ask for his help in killing Ashfur, not defending him. Squirrelflight says they wanted to hear his thoughts. Lionblaze's eyes darken with fury, and says that the plan was to kill him. Squirrelflight glares at him and says she will abide by the final decision of the leaders, not Tigerstar. Lionblaze mews through gritted teeth that there's always one more reason to wait. Squirrelflight ignores him, and says that ThunderClan thinks she's too close to Bramblestar to make a fair choice, and admits that they have a point. However, she says that one meeting between the five leaders would be best to make one last verdict. Tigerstar looks at her sympathetically, knowing how hard it is for her, and says that he understands, but if they're wrong, they're all wrong together. Lionblaze growls that if they're right, they need to do it quickly.
Tigerstar says he'll send patrols to Mistystar and Harestar, and Squirrelflight can send one to Leafstar. Lionblaze, without consulting Squirrelflight, says that they're going to be leaving now, gathering Bristlefrost and Cherryfall. Squirrelflight says that they will meet at moonhigh. Tigerstar blinks at her, and says he's sorry that this is so hard on her, but he doesn't think they have another choice. Squirrelflight is about to respond, but she scents Shadowsight, and jerks her muzzle towards his direction. Realizing he's been caught, Shadowsight emerges and apologizes, but Squirrelflight just stares at him blankly as if she didn't care. Shadowsight wonders how tonight's gathering will go down, as it will decide the fate of Bramblestar's body once and for all. Squirrelflight pads away, looking defeated, and Shadowsight wonders if she's given up all hope in saving Bramblestar.

So it's confirmed that the imposter is Ashfur? Confirmed earlier in chapter 2 of this book.

This book is so incredibly intense, it's already passed PoT, OoTS, TPB, TNP, and AVoS on my favorites. In 3 books and a couple of spoilers. This series is really promising. Way to go, Erins!

rant tw oof
if this arc ends with bramblestar getting his body back somehow and he resumes his awful leadership, then i think im honestly done with this series lmao.
at this point, im hoping that by the end of this arc that: - bramblestar actually dies - either squirrelflight becomes leader or she dies, dont care which happens as long as bramblestar isnt a leader anymore - the clans realize how awful most of the rules are in the warrior code - also they realize how shit starclan is
whats likely going to happen: - they kill ashfur somehow, brambletar gets his body back and resumes his leadership, him and squirrelflight realize how much they love each other because they can only forgive each other during a crisis, and the next arc only has like 3 lines calling back to this arc.
the tried and true warriors formula. ive been reading this series for 13 years. :' )

Chapter 22: Rootspring
Rootspring presses himself closer to Tree as Mallownose and Lizardtail push past him, heading to the gathering. As they enter, Harestar and Tigerstar are already there in the great oak. Leafstar and Mistystar are on their way to join them. Squirrelflight is hunched on the branches, her pelt ungroomed. Rootspring whispers to Tree that it's Squirrelflight's last chance to save Bramblestar. Tree mumbles he isn't sure she'll be able to, as every cat is certain Ashfur will only cause trouble. Rootspring says that Bramblestar doesn't deserve to suffer, but Tree says that perhaps Bramblestar's suffering is over already. Plumwillow asks if they've decided what to do about Ashfur, and Macgyver grunts that it's about time they did something. Tigerstar begins the gathering, and reminds them that they've all heard by now that the Sisters were not able to contact Bramblestar, and he asks Rootspring to explain what he saw. Nervously, Rootspring explains the spirits seemed in pain, and angry. Lizardtail asks if they were warriors. Rootspring replies that not all of them were, but there were warriors among them. Upon more pressing from Tigerstar, Rootspring explains that he also saw the spirit of Ashfur, but he wasn't in pain, and he looked pleased. Tigerstar says it's time they put a stop to Ashfur, and when asked how, Tigerstar replies by killing him. Lionblaze calls from among the other deputies, saying that Ashfur shouldn't be using poor Bramblestar's body anymore. Hawkwing agrees, saying that without the body, Ashfur couldn't stay in the forest. Dovewing pushes her way through the crowd and says they don't know that. Puddleshine claims she's right, as they don't know what Ashfur is capable of. If Rootspring saw him at the ceremony, then Ashfur may not need the body to survive. Dovewing faces Lionblaze and says that if they kill the body, Ashfur may just steal another. Lionblaze snaps that it won't happen unless another leader loses a life. Dovewing asks what's going to stop Ashfur from just going in the body again, and if they have to kill Bramblestar over and over again until he has no more lives. Squirrelflight speaks up, saying "You say he's gone, and then you say we need to kill him so he can return. You don't really have any idea what you're doing, do you? You think murder will solve everything. Bramblestar has always been a loyal warrior and a good leader. He'd never murder any cat, not like this. He'd never give up, but you're ready to give up on him. Please don't do this..."
Kestrelflight says that if Ashfur is torturing spirits, then surely they must kill him, as he may have less power over them. Squirrelflight says he doesn't know that. Tigerstar cuts in, and says that they've argued enough. They don't know what will happen, but they need to act quickly, as Ashfur must be plotting something. Rootspring remembers seeing Bramblestar's ghost for the first time, and how desperate he was for help. Lizardtail, Yarrowleaf, and Emberfoot shout to kill him, which is chanted by the other Clans. Tigerstar gazes at the crowd, and Harestar dips his head in acknowledgement. Tree asks if the Clans are so eager to kill in cold blood, and he says that while it's been a long time since he was with the Sisters, they would never deliberately sacrifice a cat to change destiny, and the Sisters only kill in self-defense. Tigerstar says that this is self defense. Leafstar asks if he can truly say that the Sisters would be doing this any differently, as they seemed frightened when they saw the spirits. Harestar says that they'll be putting Bramblestar out of his misery, and it's the right thing to do. Tigerstar says that they'll be protecting all the spirits since Ashfur is torturing their fallen warriors, and Bramblestar would want them to stop him in any way they could. Mistystar says the leaders must vote to decide, saying that the leaders who think he must die to go to one side of a branch, and if he must live, to go to the other side of the branch.
Squirrelflight and Mistystar want to keep Ashfur alive. Tigerstar, Leafstar, and Harestar want to kill him. Leafstar apologizes to Squirrelflight, saying that she must do what's best for her Clan. Tigerstar squares his shoulders, and says that they must now decide how to kill him. Mothwing says she can give him deathberries, as it will be easy to hide and he wouldn't realize he's dying until it's too late. Tigerstar flicks his tail and says Ashfur must die like a warrior, and that's by their own claws. Harestar agrees, saying that Ashfur doesn't deserve an easy death after all he's done to the Clans. The warriors he's killed didn't have an easy death, and asks why he should have one. Leafstar says they must kill him together, and looking at Squirrelflight, she cites that so no one cat is to blame. Squirrelflight only mutters "I could never..." before breaking down, sobbing.
Leafstar says she understands, and Tigerstar says they should do it now, and any cat who wishes to be part of it can follow. He leaps down from the oak, with Harestar, Mistystar, and Leafstar following him. The Clans watch the leaders go. Crowfeather, Lionblaze, and Hawkwing follow the leaders, and they're being followed by Lizardtail, Mallownose, Bumblestripe, and Emberfoot. Rootspring looks around, scared that it's actually happening. He looks for Squirrelflight, but realizes she's disappeared, as the branch she was crouched on is empty. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots the long grass quivering, and recognizes Squirrelflight. Foreboding worms beneath his pelt, wondering what she's planning to do.
