From mythology, of course. That, and dragon-related mythological creatures.
I'm bored, and I've seen a lack of these threads lately. Love 'em or hate 'em, I just created one.
Anyway, post away!

Rainbow Serpent.
![](http://mythicalarchive.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Rainbow-Serpent-284x450.jpg) A mythological creature of the Indigenous Australian people, it was often referred to as the "Rainbow Serpent" or "Rainbow Dragon". The people believed that Rainbow Serpents brought forth rain and was connected to life and fertility. The mythical beasts were supposedly responsible for floods and storms, which were summoned to punish the people if they went against the laws of nature. Yingarna was the mother Rainbow Serpent, who was the original creator of Earth itself, while her mate Ngalyod—the father Rainbow Serpent— was the transformer of its land.

Amphisbaena Amphisbaena was created from the blood that dripped from Medusa's head as Perseus flew over the Libyan Desert with it in hand. Its name means "to go both ways" due to, evidently, it having a head in the front, and the head on the back. When threatened, it raises one of its heads like a scorpion about to strike. It is generally known to be a creature of pure evil, often attempting to kill the innocent in legends. However, if killed, its skin could be used for medicinal purposes.

Wyvern
![](http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonvale/images/d/de/Wyvern_(1).jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120803184253) One of the most well-known species of dragons, the wyvern's easily identifiable by its two legs. There are two types of wyverns, however. The land wyvern comes mainly from medieval folklore, and is mainly associated with cold weather and icy landscapes. It will sometimes possess a venomous bite, but rarely has the ability to breathe fire. In some tales, it even as a poisonous barbed tail. Unlike their four-legged cousins, wyverns were not shown to express the same strength, grace, and intelligence. They were more malicious and animal-like.

Amphiptere
![](http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/003/b/a/amphiptere_sketch_by_awesomedarkdragon-d5nqthg.jpg) Amphiptere strongly resembles the Quetzalcoatl, with its serpent body and feathered wings. In some depictions, the beast has dragon-like wings and a dragon head instead of a snake's. Interestingly enough, in many tales, the Amphiptere is related to the wyvern. It lives in treetops and attacks the unsuspecting victims that get too close. It has two tongues, one normal forked tongue, and a tongue in the shape of an arrow point.

Tibetan Dragon
![](http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonw/images/2/25/Yoyo.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100412081320) Obviously a cousin to the Chinese Dragon, Tibetan Dragons developed in the Buddhist culture. They were much smaller than their Chinese counterparts, and many art pieces showed them bright red in color. It was the representation of communication, power, creativity, and enlightenment. It was thought that they controlled bodies of water, rain, floods, and storms. This dragon was highly worshipped, and it was believed that they only took home in the highest of mountains.

Lindworm
![](http://65.media.tumblr.com/77c8c814b65184565ae260042762a0d7/tumblr_nmhx7yZmam1tqfyozo1_1280.jpg) The Lindworm was a dragon in European mythology that was wingless and bipedal. They were well-known for their venomous bite that scared many heroes in tales. This dragon was in constant threat of getting killed and skinned in folktales, for it was seen as a cruel symbol of evil and poor fortune. The shed skin, not skinned, of a Lindworm was believed to greatly increase a person's knowledge about nature and medicine. Oddly enough, Lindworms could naturally be born albino. These were referred to as "Whiteworms" and they were a symbol of good luck.

![](http://st-listas.20minutos.es/images/2011-11/310764/3262427_640px.jpg?1322466124) The European Dragon's obsession with treasure and killing knights makes it the most famous and well-known dragon in the world. It's large body, fire breathing abilities, and leathery wings reveals a powerful beast that were feared in fairytales and folklore. In legends, the blood of a treasure-guarding dragon contains magical properties, which makes them live longer and gives them magical abilities. They are cave-dwelling beasts, representing all that is evil and terrible in the mythical world.

Japanese Dragon
![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Hokusai_Dragon.jpg) Yet another version of the Chinese Dragon, the Japanese Dragon is its more benevolent cousin. With three toes on each foot, slender body, and white coloration, the Japanese Dragon resembles a snake more than it does a traditional spiritual dragon. It represents the watery realm, having control over many bodies of water, including oceans, seas, and lakes. It also lived in caves, devouring young children and foolish adults.

Kur
![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c3/Chaos_Monster_and_Sun_God.png/800px-Chaos_Monster_and_Sun_God.png) Kur is the most unique dragon in the world, due to it being the first ever dragon being created in history. The mythology around him stated that he was essentially the guardian of the underworld. He frequently angered the gods and other deities, and even went so far as to steal a goddess from her home. Many think that the idea of dragon slaying also came from Kur, though not much is known about him and his tales.

Ouroboros
![](http://www.stephenlinsteadtstudio.com/Images/ouroborus/Ouroboros.png) Ouroboros is famously known for the fact that it eats its own tail. It's an ancient symbol, often representing either a dragon or a serpent. It was first an Egyptian legend, and it strongly symbolized self-reflexivity, introspection, and cyclicality. Eternal movement and recreation was also another symbol for it.

Ooh, this looks interesting! The Zmaj
![](http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y189/mitchtanz/a03zmaj0sk.jpg) The Zmaj is a strange type of dragon that really isn't well-known at all. With its legends coming mainly from the Republic of Slovenia, and it's uncanny resemblance with other Slavic dragons, it's not surprising that it isn't much heard of outside of its homeland. Three heads grow back if the dragon is decapitated, and many depictions show it having green scales and the usual fire breath.

Shenlong
![](http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y6G7zNWiXBA/U9ri8_K8CvI/AAAAAAABJLs/laCWCghMXIo/s1600/fantasy-dragons_00242290.jpg) Shenlong, also known as Shen-lung (Which means "god dragon" or "spirit dragon") was a highly respected dragon in Chinese mythology. It was not quite a Chinese Dragon, but similar in the aspect that it was a long serpentine dragon with a large mass, incredible antlers, and a mane of fur on its face. But all Shenlong Dragons were azure in color—rather than the varying colors of normal Chinese Dragons—and governed the wind, clouds, and rain. The people of China depended on them to assist their agriculture. Due to this, they would desperately try to avoid offending them, for an angry Shenlong Dragon means bad weather, droughts, floods, and thunderstorms.

Níðhöggr
![](http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/mythology/images/0/00/Nidhogg_chewing_on_Yggdrasil.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160302111549) Níðhöggr, also known as Nidhogg, was a dragon in Norse mythology that gnawed at the tree roots of the world tree, Yggdrasil. It is a being that selectively gnaws at only one of the three roots of the mystical tree. It is unknown specifically why the dragon actively does this, but it is to be assumed that Nidhogg was represented as an evil being in tales who ate the life of the sacred flora. Many other animals that lived on the tree actually assisted Nidhogg in its work, for even the squirrels and the birds were shown to be a burden, whereas the root-eating dragon killed the tree directly at its life source.
