I know that in canon, if a cat is deaf, blind, or has any kind of disability, they either become an elder or a medicine cat. The fandom has been calling this ableist (God I hate saying that word, it has been overused to DEATH) so many times I don't think I have to delve into that. But this raised a question. The fandom wishes better for these characters, but how can they become warriors if they clearly have things about them that could hamper their work. Hear me out, a blind cat could use their ears and sense of smell, but when it comes to battling, wouldn't it be incredibly difficult for that cat to fight? wouldn't they either die or get seriously injured? I can kind of see a deaf cat fighting, but I have a feeling their hunting would be sub-par, you have to be quiet in order to hunt and a deaf cat wouldn't know how to since they can't hear anything. As for cats with lost limbs, it has been shown irl that cats with broken/lost limbs get around just as well as normal cats, so I can kind of see that. Idk anything for Briarlight's case though. What do y'all think? How can these cats with disabilities become warriors? Is it even possible?

They might not be the best at hunting, but I can see a deaf cat doing well in WindClan hunting wise, since they rely on sight and speed, unlike in most of other clans, (SkyClan, ThunderClan, and ShadowClan) where you have to focus on being quiet. I think they could do well in RiverClan as well, but I still think WindClan would be the best for a deaf cat.
As for a blind cat, probably not SkyClan or ShadowClan, Jayfeather proved that they can fare well in ThunderClan, and RIverClan, they might can make it in RiverClan. Def not WindClan though.
I always thought Briarlight would do well in RiverClan, since they're the water clan, and you don't need to walk in water.

It reminds me of this AU where all of the clans work together in unity, and a cat can choose what clan they best fit in. For example, if a cat in Thunderclan thinks they could do better in Riverclan, they could move over there with the consent of BOTH leaders. It was a good AU.

Ngl I thought Briarlight could have been written better. Would have been fun to see her figure out walking on her two front paws and while she probably couldn't fight or hunt, she could definitely have done more. Also, you can see stray blind and deaf cats and they seem to be doing just fine. They could probably become warriors given the right training.
Love the idea of cats with different disabilities doing better in different clans. It would have been something cool to explore within the books.

That kinda makes me think of disabled cats given special training by certain cats. Maybe deaf and blind cats specifically can be given a guide to help them out. I saw someone talk about this au where deaf and blind cats are given a service animal (That was trained by the medicine cat), and I just found it really cute and ugh.

Disability in Warriors is a controversial issue for a reason. It's really not as simple as "disabled cats should be able to do anything they want" or "disabled cats are completely useless and shouldn't even try to be warriors". (I've seen both of these opinions circled around unironically).
Some disabilities could have minimal effect on a cat's life, depending on where they are. For example, a blind cat in ShadowClan would probably do just fine as a warrior. Same for a deaf cat in WindClan. But swap those two (blind cat in WindClan, deaf cat in ShadowClan) and suddenly you're looking at so much adversity that the cat should be strongly encouraged to pursue other paths.
But "pursue other paths" doesn't need to mean elder or medicine cat. This is why I'm a big fan of diversifying jobs in the Clans (this has more benefits than just the disability issue). Maybe once you become a warrior, you then specialize in something like medical assisting or building. You still have basic hunting/fighting skills common to all non-MCs, but you pick a specific job that you are responsible for. This is for all cats, not just disabled ones.
If that were the case, cats with disabilities don't need to worry about the specific thing they'd be terrible at. That deaf cat in ShadowClan could become a builder-- able to defend the Clan in emergencies, but spends most of their time inspecting and fortifying dens and the camp defenses. The blind cat in WindClan could become a messenger, responsible for sending messages between patrols or to other Clans, never having to worry about actually fighting in a proper battle, because if a fight does break out, their job is to fetch backup. They'd still be Warriors, but they wouldn't face the same pressure of (for example) "you can't fight well/at all, so you can't be a Warrior".

Yes. I’m fairly certain the writers don’t consider actual disabled cats, especially ones with three legs. Blind and deaf cats do alright for themselves.
Also the “well they couldn’t hunt/fight so they’d be useless” argument is, and Im sorry, absolutely stupid. There’s more to being a warrior than just hunting and battling. That sounds like a shitty existence for anyone.

I was just thinking about how it would be in the actual canon of the book without anything like headcanons added into it. Again, sorry for poor word choice, I understand that there is more to being a warrior than just hunting and fighting, but apparently the narrative of the books don't.

The problem is really just that battles and hunting as marks of honor and pride are so important to the Warriors society. They have a very samurai or knight-esque culture with respect to the glory of battle and hunts, but even more extreme because they don't have any other real ideals besides that. This really has to do with the lack of job diversity but also the culture behind it. Who in the clans would tell brave stories or give honor to someone who builds a den? Not anyone, and that's precisely the problem.
This hits the disabled the hardest because their ability to fight and hunt has been hit in varying degrees. Someone like Brightheart who is only missing one eye or Deadfoot who is only missing a frontpaw, they are not terribly hampered in terms of what they can do in a fight or hunting. A deaf cat is in the middle here, probably able to fight well enough but being poor at hunting and greater tactics. A blind cat's in a really bad spot, blindness is an absolute killer in a battle and a horrible handicap when hunting too. And poor Briarlight is in a place where she is not merely hampered but simply CANNOT do these things.
This wouldn't be such a big issue if Warriors society had more diversity, but it's such an honor through battle and hunting culture that it would be difficult for a disabled cat to succeed as a warrior.

They probably could be warriors, or at least warriors with some limits.
This is probably the 497324 time I've wished something in Warriors had been written better ngl

I think disabled cats (depending on the handicap) can do at least some of the jobs as able warriors, but that's part of the issue. They can only fulfill part of the responsibility. It can lead to a feeling of second-class citizen or inferiority to constantly be surrounded by cats who have to do part of your job (even if they don't mind). The helplessness of not risking your life like the rest of your clanmates in battle or being able to hunt when friends are starving to death.
I'm not saying that actually makes them lesser, but it definitely contributes to low esteem. It's why characters like Jayfeather and Cinderpelt would rather be a medicine cat, a job they can do 100%, than to settle for being half a warrior. People want to feel like they pull their weight, even if it means abandoning their dream. Just fixing leaking roofs isn't enough, they need a job they can feel irreplaceably good at.
I agree career diversity would solve part of the issue, though. A deaf cat can specialize in, say, tracking or tree climbing as well as (or perhaps better) than their clanmates.

Briarlight could have trained her tail to maybe become a replacement leg? Briarlight's spine is broken, not her legs. Her tail is just as limp and unable to move as her legs are. She can't train a paralyzed limb.

I never understood the debate about this a couple of months back and I thought many fans were overreacting. The only disabled cat I feel was treated badly was Snowkit. Everyone else had a good life. Jayfeather became a respected medicine cat and saved the Clans, all the Clans loved Cinderpelt, and everyone loved Briarlight. Why did everyone make a big deal about this? It's just cat books. It's Briarlight wars 2012 all over again, lol. Nobody was treated like shit.
Anyway, to answer your question, I really don't think it'll work. If anyone had to go on patrol sometimes there's fighting. The rival Clan would know nothing about their disability. Yes, a blind cat might be able to sense someone behind them, but they wouldn't be able to see how the cats were attacking the victim. Remember when Jaypaw needed help to fight? Yes, he managed to be in a battle without getting too much damage, but he needed help, and Lion ended up telling him where Owlpaw was. A blind cat would need someone's support. This has already been proven to be difficult with Jay.
Now for being deaf.... It's possible this could work, but remember there's "tools" the cats can use. We've seen them using sand and getting them in their eyes. And what if someone clawed their eyes so they can win the battle? Cats have been dishonorable and gruesome before; just look at Scorchfur. He nearly blinded Tawnypelt out of stress.
So, no, I don't think a blind or a deaf cat could work. They'd need help. And if these cats even met any of them at Gatherings, the rival Clans could take advantage of their disability and hurt them.
It's dangerous for them to be out in patrol and not worth the risk. There's been fighting over stupid shit before (remember that one time in The Forgotten Warrior when Ivypool and Birchfall almost started a fight for washing their paws? Even Sorreltail called them stupid for that) so it really isn't worth the risk to take them on patrols. They're best assisting inside the Clan, like what Briarlight did with Jayfeather.
Please don't take this personally btw, I'm just saying my opinion. I'm not attacking anyone. I just think the fandom takes these books way too seriously sometimes, and it's starting to become frustrating now.

(Seriously, I CANNOT tell you how many times I have seen a WC fan use the word ableism/ableist incorrectly, I could go on for 40 hours smfh) About the part of deaf and blind cats needing help, I actually have this AU where the medicine cat trains other animals (Like rats) to do service work for blind and deaf cats. So they are basically service rats. I know that sounds SUPER unrealistic on paper, and it is. But hey, it's a book about cats with cat heaven and hell, superpowers given by the cat gods, and unrealistic genetics, so if fans don't make a big fuss about that, then I don't see a big fuss in service animals helping out the blind and deaf.

They missed an opportunity with this on Jayfeather and Hollyleaf switching their roles. Would've been more interesting to see then both overcome their hurdles rather than "follow your true destiny laid before you!"
Like imagine the Hollyleaf drama if she was actually a Medicine cat, spicy.

Snowkit - could've been trained under Brackenfur easily had Bluestar not denied them that and had Snowkit not been taken away.
Cinderpelt - could've still fought, but I think it was shown that she liked being a medicine cat?
Jayfeather - might be able to fight, still mad the med cat position got forced upon him =/
Briarlight - highly doubt she's gonna be able to do any hunting or fighting. unless her clan could invent a wheelchair she's not gonna be able to move around quickly.
the thing is not every disabled cat can do every job. there are some with minor disabilities that don't hamper them much and then there are some that have disabilities that hinder them a lot. i don't think it's ableist to consider the fact that briarlight probably won't be able to do much since she's paralyzed and wheelchairs aren't a thing in warriors. i find that the erins could've been much better in some regards (cough jayfeather and snowkit cough), but even within warriors there has to be a reasonable limit. i can believe jayfeather developing a super heightened sense of hearing and smell more than i can believe briarlight to be able to fight.
then again these are just my thoughts. i could be wrong.

I just think the fandom takes these books way too seriously sometimes, and it's starting to become frustrating now. I think people have a right to be frustrated when a children's series has inappropriate messages. I think most of the fandom takes it way too far (that ableism hashtag a few weeks ago made me want to claw my eyes out), but there are DEFINITELY incidences that are worth making a fuss over. We have repeated occurrences of a disabled cat not given help due to sheer laziness (you're too hard to train, so go be a medicine cat-- Cinderpelt and Alderheart), an extremely ableist society that doesn't ever change that aspect of themselves, and at least one incident of a disabled kitten being killed because of their disability. If these were adult books, it'd be one thing. You can get a lot more nuance into your portrayal of disability when you can assume your readership is primarily adults who have already formed their view of the world and aren't impressionable. In an adult book, the Snowkit thing would be bad, but everyone would see it as such and take it more as a sign of how harsh life in the wild is (which is likely what it was intended to be). In a children's book, you've essentially told a young deaf reader that cats like them don't survive, which is a really shitty message to send. Hell, I read AVoS as a late teenager and I was still massively put off by Alderheart's situation. It's one of the only things in Warriors that I find actually offensive. Seeing a character suffer from the same illness as me be told "you suck at everything, go do something else" and being forced to be a medicine cat while literally begging and screaming not to? That hurt, man. Basically what I'm trying to say is that "these are just children's books" is the exact reason so many people get upset about these things. Though I will say Briarlight is actually very well-written (lack of research notwithstanding), and I never got the outrage around Jayfeather. Both of these cats were portrayed as well as possible while still taking the realistic disadvantages they face into account.
