rose Making a separate thread because cats and not cats. Hope that's cool. I'll start brainstorming some characters today. I haven't quite settled on an archetype yet, don't know if I want to play into the assassin stereotypes or move against it somehow.

maybe just a short, mainly physical description? That way we don't have to do that awkward thing of describing every physical detail slowly in the first few replies and waiting for the other to drop a detail to use in our own posts kind of thing lol

Victoria Carter | captivating, reserved, prideful
Lightly tanned and with waist length, black hair, Victoria is quite the beauty. She's not the tallest - standing at merely 5'4, but that's nothing that a pair of heels can't fix. She prefers to leave her hair down, though will tie it up if the situation so calls for it; pieces are always out to frame her heart shaped face anyways, though. She has a charming, almost infectious smile, and a small button nose. Her body is composed of small curves (a fact that she often uses to her advantage), and she has large, brown almond eyes. She's one who cares quite deeply about her physical health - and while her shape is a product of that, so is her impressive body strength.

I apologize for how short it is, but I think I'm gonna sleep pretty soon and that's all I could come up with right now haha that's what i get for finally getting around to this at 1:30 AM
i used the format of adding a positive, a neutral, and a negative trait at the top, if that's okay; i don't like being too confined by restraints i made for a character before hand (especially in 1x1 settings), but i do like having a little to go off of (obviously you don't have to follow that format though) :-)

Kagan Beck | tenacious, resourceful, proud
Kagan looks completely average, a perk in his profession. 5'10, sandy brown hair, forgettable features. The only thing that stands out are his eyes: hazel, and always watching. And perhaps his voice, which is deeper than one might expect from his appearance. He often keeps a trim beard. His build is fit, but while he does occasionally do standard work outs, he prefers pushing limits with yoga and martial art forms. He mainly uses disguises and cunning to get close to his marks, only using brute force as a last resort.

up to you, I'm down for either. We can also have it so that the Assassin's mark is the Thief, like a setup.
though if it's not too much to ask, can you do the starter/scene setting? Cuz this has been an idea in my head for a long time (like, this is from my old plot shop from '17) and I have this really rigid idea of how it should be set and honestly, I want to work with something new (if that makes sense?). Like I don't want to fall into a worldbuild rut so to speak, and having a new base of someone else's imagination would be helpful (as long as its not too much to ask of you, since you said you're new to sci-fi-esques). I write a lot of sci-fi and having another viewpoint is always a treasure.
also, if I can ask, what time zone are you? because this is 4am for me, i'm just nocturnal but this is not Normal Person NA time

i like the idea of a set up a lot actually! let’s do it
i’m good to do the starter! just keep in mind that i don’t think i’ve ever properly written sci fi (more of a medieval leaning person if i’m being honest), so just bear that in mind haha
and i live in arkansas so CST i think? i sleep at around 3 am nowadays but i should probably try to fix that lmao

sweet! i can totally work with that.
I'm ready to jump in when you are. and we don't have to go too deep into the sci-fi either, I'm fine with just an alt-modern or something along those lines too.
sameeee I've been sleeping like 5-noon recently and probably should try and change that zzz i'm not a morning person At All so it has been nice to see the sunrise even if its 'late' instead of 'early'

Heels clacked against hard pavement as Victoria made her way down Tamford Alley. She walked briskly but not too fast - she never did things too fast. Just mere minutes prior, she had been busy partying in a small night club - dancing awkwardly to random electronic beats that she had yet to hear before. She had been offered many drinks, but as strangers began to add her drink onto their own bill faster and faster, the faster she was to pass her drinks on to the woman she had decided to bring with her that night - Celia Byers. Celia had seemed to take no notice of the fact that Victoria hadn't been nearly as wasted as she was - in fact, Victoria had opted out of consuming anything the entire night, not that Celia had probably noticed that either. She didn't need anything to calm her, and besides, anything that could've potentially stolen her chances of completing her mission today was simply out of question. Her handbag jingled with the noise of her tools - it was cheap, and could be easily discarded. She hadn't brought this bag into the club; no, that wouldn't been too big of a risk. Rather, she had gone in without it; but despite the lack of a bag, she hadn't come completely empty handed - she had come with a friend. To Victoria, though, the term "friend" could easily be replaced with the word "alibi". Who was to believe that a woman who had spent all night drinking had somehow managed to steal?
Besides, "stealing" wasn't her favorite term. What she did professionally was not just a thing that was comparable to something a child could do when faced when faced with a cookie jar before them; no, she was a thief. This wasn't the life that she had chose, but it was the life that had found her; doing just a few "favors" here and there could turn into something larger very quickly, she now knew - but besides, this life was something that she was damn good at living. Victoria liked to think that she wasn't one to gloat but - oh, who was she kidding? Yes she was. She had managed to steal it all in the past: jewelry, large sums of money - hell, she had even been commissioned to steal a will years ago. Most importantly, though, she had built a name for herself. She was no longer just "apart of the Carter family"; she was Victoria Carter.
But the most recent call had come two days ago. It had been an anonymous caller - just as they all were. They had wanted something called a "peach diamond" stolen, and had told her an address. It wasn't something she had heard of before, and honestly, she had thought she'd heard it all. They had claimed it to be of great value, but it was far from her why something of such great importance wouldn't be stored under lock and key at some prissy museum. Her hand had been ready to cut off the call and decline the offer almost immediately - the excitement was a large factor of her choosing which jobs were worth doing - but then the caller had told her the sum that they'd offer her. Victoria trusted that the peach diamond was probably very beautiful, but nothing was prettier than the amount the caller had said on the other end of the phone line that night. Had it taken a second longer for her to accept, she would've slapped herself. That much for a job that seemed this simple? She knew she was a renowned figure when it came to these kinds of things, but that? She smirked, repeating the word she had said right when the call had ended. "Idiot."
Now, all she could do was continue down the alley, the address they had given her repeating itself unremittingly through her mind. She came up to a large dumpster rather quickly; if the authorities chose to go the hound dog route, then this would certainly take care of her scent. She began changing quickly - removing her heels first and replacing them with some cheap black sneakers that she had purchased years ago instead. She unzipped her dress and pulled it over her head quickly, changing into her all black attire. She smirked knowingly - not many who she had met tonight, when dancing or otherwise, would think she was the type for a completely monochromatic outfit.
"Surprise," she muttered under her breath quietly. "I am."
She threw the bag she had brought with her into the dumpster in a rapid fashion - the night had reached optimal darkness; or, as she liked to call it, the "cloaking hour". She pulled the mask on with a trained ease, brown eyes blinking quickly to make sure she was fully adjusted to the dark. Victoria smiled slowly; she was now ready for one of the biggest pay days of her life.
Now where the hell is that damn house.

- - - boop - - - Kagan 192 Fletcher Street . . . Kagan's disguise was flawless.
When asked what skills an assassin should have, most would put weapons skills and combat at the top, perhaps stealth, maybe strength somewhere in the list, always meticulous planning down to a single heartbeat. Kagan knew all these things were inferior. He spent more hours working a sewing machine than he did at the shooting range, kept more cosmetics brushes in his kit than knives, and trusted flexibility more than a careful plan. The only thing he conceded to was collecting information: good intel is king when walking on a field of lies.
It was a shame he hadn't much time to be as thorough as he would have liked for this job. Alas, the call had come only two days prior. But Kagan had worked with this client before and like most everything now, it went through his handler before it even reached his ears. The handler, an AI only known as "Edge", acted like a job posting board for the people Kagan ran with. It filtered the petty requests from the ones that would turn a profit and assigned them accordingly. This job had been flagged as particularly lucrative. Edge mentioned that it was offered to Kagan by name. At first this was slightly troubling until he learned it was a repeat client. The job itself made him even more uncomfortable, but again, the numbers Edge gave him soothed that fear as well.
And so as Kagan leaned against the wall out back of 192 Fletcher Street, rolling a scrap of paper between his fingers, he appeared nothing more than a bored server taking a quick break. Inside the building there were at least a dozen servers in the same costume --red jacket, black buttons, white trim-- going about their duties. The bottom floor hosted a restaurant, some sort of posh middle eastern cuisine with a name he couldn't pronounce. But what Kagan was interested in were the apartments above, specifically unit 3A. That was where the thief would be.
Kagan was wary of taking on a job as a guard. But his client assured him that he could do the job however he pleased, so long as the thief was dead by the end of the night. Kill them, that was what the client had said. And if Kagan was good at one thing in life, it was creating death.
Kagan placed himself between the back door to the restaurant and the doors to the staircase that lead to the suites above. His client had generously given Kagan a keycard, saving him the time and money to forge his own. He watched the alley carefully. A mirror in his hand gave him vision of the window above without having to openly at it. Of course, there were other entrances. He couldn't cover them all. Cameras facing the front and roof of the building were set to ping his earpiece if they spotted movement, hopefully those would give him an early warning. If all else failed, every window and door in the apartment were similarly trapped with small motion cameras that would alert him if the thief managed to bypass the first layer.
He twisted the scrap of paper in his palm again, fidgeting with it as he kept alert. He almost felt bad for the thief. Kagan didn't know what intel his client had, how he had known that a thief would come that day --or at all. Maybe this whole place was a setup, a trap. He almost hoped the thief wouldn't show up at all. Not that he was bothered with the killing (even if he was, the price tag was enough to quell his conscience), but that it was one of his own that needed to die. Usually his marks were political or at least for personal vengeance. But a thief, who, like Kagan, put their own life on the line to satisfy some rich person's whims... He understood that he was only one mistake away from being caught; that was half the allure, knowing that to do a job was to do it flawlessly or not at all, that his skills were sharpened, honed, for that one grand purpose. One slip up and everything he built would be gone in an instant. He sighed and let the paper drop from his fingers. It tumbled down the alley, a spark of white in the darkness.
No, Kagan only regretted that if this thief showed up, he would have to be at the end of it. - - -

192 Fletcher Street. That was where she needed to be.
Admittedly, the first thing Victoria had been inclined to do was just walk in. The all black attire she was wearing would have been the perfect way to slip into such a building; of course, only if had it been quiet like she had thought it would be. As it turned out, though, fate had decreed that that was the opposite of what was happening that night. Typically, she would've scoped out the apartment well in advance, but after having gotten the call just a mere two days ago, she had decided that being seen at such a place a few days in advance would've been too big of a risk. Of course she had done her research, but she hadn't expected there to be this many people there tonight. Who the hell is dining at this hour? And why so many? This must've been a hell of a good party for people to still be there. She tugged the mask on her face off quickly. It wasn't unusual for someone to be wearing all black, but the mask she was wearing just would not do. It reeked of suspicion. And her? She reeked of the lingering scent of dumpster. The alley she was in gave way perfectly to the back entrance of the building, but there was a man there. A waiter, by his garb, though she didn't dare go close enough to study his face. Frankly, she didn't care to read his plain name off his plain, corporate name tag, because frankly, what that was didn't matter to her. What mattered was the fact that there had to be another way in, and that it was her job to find it. She cursed herself inwardly for already having thrown her dress away - would it have blended in perfectly to match the elegance that the people dining in the restaurant seemed to wear? No, but it was a hell of a lot better than whatever she was currently wearing. So, getting in via the front entrance was a no go. It seemed like the back entrance was too. Spies and burglars in the movies had always seemed to have a back up plan, always armed with a grappling hook and forever ready and prepared to scale a building whenever that seemed to be an available option. And Victoria was no different - when it came to the back up plan part, not the grappling hook.
After a few minutes of tedious searching, she finally found a window. It was situated on the side of the building, and it seemed just big enough for her to get through. Though it was on the second floor, that didn't seem to be a problem; she had found a few boxes nearby that, if she was quick enough, hopefully would be fitting to be fashioned into a stepping stool of sorts; and plus, she was good at climbing. It was an odd building when it came to the architectural side of things; the windows were scattered about and varied in size - lacking uniform and being placed in something far from an array. Quite frankly, it was ugly; but that was just modern architecture, Victoria supposed. But before going to said window, she kept low. She had to make up for her lack of preparation somehow, right? There was yet another window, placed meticulously (for once, it seemed) under the window she planned to enter through. This one showed into the first floor, and based on just a brief glance at the two, the hallways they peered into seemed almost identical. That was certainly a good sign. Places like these didn't always have hidden cameras, but places that allowed people to continue dining into the ungodly hours of night definitely would. Victoria reached into her back pocket and took out her flashlight. It was an old fashioned thing - chunky and much too big, but she liked keeping it for a small sense of security; she never knew when she may have to knock someone out to help her getaway. Had the need for it arisen yet? No, but it very well could.
And so, she turned on the flashlight, shining it quickly through the window. With the light, she could now see the hallway of that particular floor clear as day - carpeted in a blue and white wool. Again, she clearly wasn't proving to be the biggest fan of the owners' tastes, but she wasn't here to give a critical review. There was another window near the one she was looking through, angled in such a way that if that window was a person, it could almost look through the window she was currently looking into. And, though she couldn't yet tell exactly, it seemed that the rod in which the window's curtain was hanging on seemed to be hollow. If there was a camera, that'd certainly be a good place for it. She took a breath and shone the flashlight in the general direction of the rod and, surely enough, there was a glint. It happened fast and disappeared once the direction her light was coming in made the slightest shift in angles, but it was there. Well, would you look at that; these owners really thought of it all, didn't they? She almost wanted to give them a reward - what with how genius they must've thought their plan to hide their camera in a curtain rod was, but what they probably didn't know was: it was one of the oldest tricks in the book. From experience, she could infer that if the cameras were placed in the curtain rod on the first floor, and the second floor looked identical to it, then the general trend was to follow suit on the second floor as well. She only hoped that these owners weren't crafty when designing their building, nor in a mood to switch things up.
Victoria climbed atop the stack of boxes, opening the window in such a manner that it almost looked rehearsed, and then pulled herself in. She gave the stack of boxes a hard kick as she climbed onto the second floor - not the best thank you, for sure, she could give them that; but now, the boxes looked as if they had been left carelessly by some janitor who hadn't wanted to do his duties that night, and not like they had been used to let a thief into the building. Though usually, she'd do things like this quickly, she took her time with this particular situation. That motion sensor was a powerful thing. She liked to think she was skilled in evading them - she'd done it for years and had yet to get caught - but she didn't know if that would catch up with her eventually. All she knew was that, so far, the reason she hadn't been caught wasn't due to lady luck. She didn't believe in luck. It was a skill - and one that she had been honing for years, at that. Her body temperature was low, and she kept out of the general line of sight of the camera. She took a small number of baby steps at a time and barely found it in her to breathe. Hell, if every window had a camera, then the entire hallway was probably bugged as well.
She took the stairs to unit 3A. So this is where the famed peach diamond is located. Entering through the front door was ballsy, but what choice did she have? She pulled the key card out from her back pocket quickly, fiddling with it between two freshly manicured fingers. Had this been the olden times, Victoria was sure that she would've been a famed lock pick. Alas, these were not those times. But though she didn't have the skillset to pick locks (purely due only to the fact that most places were secured with key cards now, and thinking of normal locks as useless), she definitely had the skills to pick pockets. In truth, when the caller had told her the price that they'd offer her and she began going busily over the details of the job again (with a serious intent, this time), that had been her first option to find a way in - pick a keycard from some unsuspecting person's pocket. The other option had been to sweet talk a receptionist, but the odds of that working were purely based on who was working that day. But to her avail, just a mere day later, a key card had appeared in her mail. It was odd - the caller having access to a means of getting in but not using it; but that was just how the elite worked, she supposed. Willing to play in the mud, but appalled at the prospect of getting their hands dirty. Besides, the caller had been very persistent in saying that no one would be home today. Usually, Victoria liked to give herself the freedom to pick her own days to finish certain jobs, but the person with the modulated voice on the other end had repeated over and over that this was the first day in months that the place would be completely vacant.
But as she swiped the card through the key slot and heard the familiar beep indicating that the door was ready to open, all she could do was hope that the caller was right.
For their benefit, not hers.
