Without further ado...
Every clan has their own unique skill except one, ShadowClan are the best at stalking, RiverClan can swim, SkyClan can jump really high, and ThunderClan can fight/hunt with a lot of underbrush.
WindClan however, there is nothing unique about them anymore.
When the series first started, WindClan was hailed as the fastest clan, the only clan to be able to catch rabbits. It was seen as a deal of great skill and talent, when Sandstorm, a ThunderClan cat, managed to catch a rabbit.
However, that is all in the past now, because every clan seems to be catching rabbits these days.
What is it that makes WindClan unique then? Is it their snarky attitudes? The way they attack their opponents several cats to one, and still lose?
Perhaps, but what are the good ways in which WindClan is unique?
I can name one, something that was sadly abolished a few generations ago, and that was tunneling.
Tunneling was what set WindClan apart from the rest, it was what made them special, Barkface even points this out in Tallstar's Revenge.
Not only is tunneling unique, but the tunnelers in TR were a lot nicer and a lot less snarky and full of themselves than the moor-runners were.
Though, it is hard to see why the moor-runners were so arrogant, pretty much anyone can run, but it takes a special kind of skill, dedication, and mind set to be able to tunnel.
Tunneling is a skill that requires a great deal of strength, paying attention to details, and thought, tunnelers use their minds just as much, if not more than their bodies.
Another positive thing about tunneling, is that you pretty much get a designated best friend, since every tunneler has to have a partner, and it is the duty of a tunneler to look out for their partner, no matter what.
Tunnelers also excel in hearing and smelling, to the point of basically having super senses, as shown here.
Woollytail knew EXACTLY where Cloudrunner caught that rabbit, just from the smell of sand alone.
Hickorynose then follows it up, by saying that they only find sand tunnels on the high moors, but that just shows that they have a great memory, and pay attention to details.
Here are two more instances of tunnelers having exceptional senses.
The only sense that a moor runner has that is stronger than tunneler, is their sense of sight, at least in the light.
In the dark though? Tunnelers are the clear winner there.
Now, to the biggest argument, tunneling being too dangerous, which brings to mind this quote:
The circumstances surrounding Leafshine's death, which was also the cave-in that damaged Lilywhisker's leg, isn't explained, but the other instance of tunneling being dangerous is.
That instance in question, is when Sandgorse broke one of the major rules of tunneling, and went into the tunnels without a trained tunneler with him.
That had nothing to do with tunneling itself, but with Sandgorse's lack of good judgement.
Another instance, where tunneling might be seen as bad, was when ShadowClan attacked, and the tunnelers were busy with their tunneling, but even if they were there, could they have helped much? They had no fighting skills.
That did not mean they were useless though, tunnels are EXTREMELY useful, cats can sneak onto other clan's territories, they can make for quick escape routes, someone once said, that hiding in the tunnels, could have helped them out when ShadowClan chased out WIndClan, and I agree, not to mention, it could give way to sneak attacks.
If tunnelers were trained to fight, they could pretty much be an unstoppable force, think about it, they could sneak up out of pretty much anywhere, and attack. They're also used to navigating the tunnels, the dark, etc, so they would have a HUGE advantage over their opponet.
Speaking of the dark, blind cats, since tunneling is done in the dark, I believe a blind cat could have a pretty good shot at being a tunneler, instead of getting shoved into the elder's or medicine cat den.
In real life, cats can see in the dark, maybe not perfectly, but at least better than humans can, but apparently, in this series they can't?
In Battles of the Clans, it states "Often, the tunnelers grew so accustomed to working in blackness that they lost any daylight vision and were clumsy and nervous above the ground."
Which, could also be seen as a weakness in cats with sight, but I don't think it would make much difference if the cat could not see.
I think this post is long enough, so I will end it by saying that even though tunneling can be dangerous, I still think it is a skill deserving of recognition and respect, Shattered Ice and Jackdaw's Cry did not spend all that time and hard work, for their discoveries to get thrown into the dirt pile.
Tunneling helped out WindClan through a lot of hard times, and sure they may be doing fine now, but that leads me to the start of this post, what makes them unique now?
