Let's say that the imposter somehow isn't Ashfur, but it's simply another antagonist with blue eyes; that narrows it down to these two cats, though Hawkfrost's eyes are specifically ice-blue and is, y'know, double dead.
But if this weren't the case, which of these two cats would you have liked to be the imposter and what sort of hints do you think there'd be? For example, the imposter's obsession with Squirrelflight is one of the biggest hints that it's Ashfur, and this clearly wouldn't be the case with either Hawkfrost and especially Darktail.

I honestly wouldn't have minded it being Darktail. Though I was hoping it would be an entirely new villain

Onestar's dead so Darktail would have no beef, especially towards TC.

I mean. If I HAD to choose? Hawkfrost makes more sense as he'd totally have a grudge against Bramble.
But I'm definitely happy with Ashfur because it fits, which makes sense since the plot was written around him.

Hawkfrost would arguably make more sense to me over Darktail, given that he once followed the code and his relationship with Bramblestar.
Though between the two of them, are there really any defining traits that they have to help deduce who the impostor is? With Ashfur you have his obsession with Squirrelflight and all, but with these two...it'd just kind of be "evil", no? Hawkfrost and Darktail, as far as I remember, didn't have a defining personality trait outside of "bad guy". That wouldn't really narrow it down to a cat using process of elimination like TBC has done for us. With Ashfur we have cats who still have issues with him (namely Squirrelflight, and probably Lionblaze and Jayfeather). Darktail's issues were with Onestar, who is dead, and I don't think Hawkfrost had any majorly underlining issues with alive cats.
In any case, I'm happy it's Ashfur and I think he works well this arc as the main villain.

Which is the only way I'd choose him over Darktail Ashfur >>> Hawkfrost >>>>>>>>>>>>> Darktail

Probably Hawkfrost, since Darktail probably had no idea who Squirrelflight even was and wouldn't know so much about the TC territory. And Hawkfrost, even though he's double dead, probably still hates Bramblestar.

I love that scene when he hears the word apprentice and starts immediately treating them like honored guests because he thinks that's some impressive title. He's kind of insecure and a bit of a failure in many regards as a villain with the kinds of cat that he puts his trust into, a villain-in-training sort of, but it makes him stand apart from the pack in his own way. Most villains in Warriors seem to know exactly how to do it from the start, but Darktail has to learn on the fly and we see him do that. So I guess if one were to look at it that way, the Impostor's utter failure at running a clan could be seen as Darktail's inexperience rearing its head once more. Though the Impostor's big emotional funks and asking for drugs isn't really Darktail's style, along with many other things of course.

Darktail, only because Hawkfrost died twice and wouldn't want them to retcon that. Which is why I'll be pretty disappointed if Tigerstar, Brokenstar, or Hawkfrost got involved in any cases.

Honest confession: When I first read Lost Stars I really, REALLY wanted it to be Oakstar.
