Orpheus gave a small nod at that. He had developed an internal clock over the years, at least when it came to baking. It meant he couldnโt play when he was in the middle of making something, as that was the best way he had found to make himself lose time, but otherwise he tended to be fairly accurate. It wasnโt as though there were many other reliable ways to tell time, especially when the sun was going down. It wasnโt as though it was feasible for him to carry around a sundial to time just how long he needed to bake his bread. It was all based on estimation, but Orpheus found that worked perfectly well for him, especially once he figured out the perfect timing. That did, unfortunately, require plenty of failed attempts that were either burnt or undercooked and, in some cases, both at once. That was one Orpheus remembered well. It took a few moments for Orpheus to get situation, but once he did he turned so L could see his whole face as he began to raise the bread to his lips. Exceptโฆ L was already eating. Orpheusโ eyes widened and he felt his hand drop back down to his lap, but he said nothing. Was it appropriate to comment? Had it been intentional?

L chewed the bread thoughtfully for a long moment, savoring the taste. It was goodโฆas always, Orpheus was a very good baker. L didnโt realize anything was different until he opened his eyes and met Orpheusโ surprised gaze. He hesitated, blinking, trying to figure out what was the matterโฆand then dropped his gaze to Orpheusโ untouched slice, his own eyes widening as he realized what had happened. โOh,โ he said softly, expression started as he glanced at Orpheus again. He hadnโt meant toโฆhe had forgotten. He had actually forgotten. And what was even more shocking, if that was possibleโฆhe wasnโt suddenly terrified that heโd just been poisoned, either. Even though Orpheus hadnโt even nibbled the dough as he sometimes did. Even though he could easily toss it away now. L met his gaze, eyes wide, and tried to find something to say.

Orpheus didnโt say anything at first, just watched L for a long moment to make sure he was okay. Had he been starving? Was Orpheusโ tolerance for time without food longer than Lโs? Was there a reason he had eaten without even waiting for Orpheus to take a bite? The whole situation was distracting Orpheus enough that he almost forgot he was holding his own slice. L didnโt eat before Orpheus proved it wasnโt poisoned. He justโฆ didnโt. Which meant either something was very, very wrong, orโฆ or L was beginning to trust him. Orpheus didnโt dare let himself believe that, so it had to be that something was the matter that Orpheus had somehow failed to notice. โIs everything alright?โ he breathed, concern coating his voice even as he broke off a piece of his own bread and chewed it mindlessly, brows furrowed as he watched L. โDidโฆ did I wait too long to make the food? I didnโt mean to make you suffer or anything, I justโฆ I guess I stopped us when I was hungry and I didnโt think to ask you before, so itโs possibleโฆโ he trailed off, cheeks turning red as he realized he was now rambling. That was no way to solve a problem, no matter how unnerved Orpheus was.

L had been hungry, but it was far from the hungriest heโd ever been. Following Orpheus, not losing him, keeping himself fed at the same timeโฆit hadnโt been easy to pull off, always. He had ended up allowing hunger to overpower paranoia more than once, when heโd been desperate enough, and even then, sometimes finding anything had been a challenge. He knew the difference between hunger and starvation. He knew he could have waited, if heโd wanted to. He met Orpheusโ gaze, seeing the concern there, written as clearly as if heโd said it out loud. Orpheus was worried. About him. He dropped his gaze to the bread, and took another small bite. Was everything alright? โI wasnโt uncomfortable,โ he replied after a moment, voice low. It was the truth, delivered hesitantly, like he wasnโt sure whether it would bite. He looked up, meeting Orpheusโ gaze once again, and gave a tiny nod. โI thinkโฆeverything is fine.โ

Orpheus watched L, not letting the concern leave his expression until L guaranteed that he was alright. It was justโฆ odd, that he had eaten without checking to make sure Orpheus had taken a bite first. Orpheus had hoped to earn Lโs trust, and he had hoped to make him more comfortable by cooking in front of him, but he had never actually allowed himself to imagine it happening. L was paranoid by habit, and habits took a very long time to break if you had built them up for centuries. Besides, paranoia wasnโt an unreasonable habit to have. It was something that Orpheus needed to get a little bit more of. Perhaps not paranoia, but suspicion at the very least. So the idea that L might be starting to trust him, at least when it came to foodโฆ it wasnโt so much alarming as it was merelyโฆ unexpected. โIโm glad,โ he said after a long moment, his smile widening as he took a bite of his own food. It tasted like nothing, though perhaps that was just because Orpheusโ mind wasnโt on the food. It was entirely on the fact that L had eaten without giving it a second thought. Maybe it would happen again. Maybe not. But the fact that it had even happened once felt like an accomplishment. Orpheus was actually making progress when it came to winning L over. They may never be friends, but at the very least L wasnโt quite as afraid that Orpheus was going to kill him. Baby steps, but wasnโt a babyโs first step an accomplishment to be celebrated?

ReallyโฆL knew this was long overdue. He had already confessed to himself thst he did on some level trust Orpheus when heโd stepped out of the shadows for the first time. He had put himself in a vulnerable position then, and he hadnโt died. Thisโฆthis caution wasnโt suspicion. This was paranoia. This wasnโt a logical fear. Orpheus, if he wanted L dead, had more ways than poison at his disposal. They werenโt even sure whether poison could kill either of them. And if L found out, Orpheus had to know he would never give another chance, ever. So he wasnโt afraid, rationally. It was just how his brain worked, to act afraid a long time after heโd stopped. He was grateful that Orpheus was willing to put up with him, more than he knew how to tell him. He nibbled his bread. This wasโฆthis was a subtle shift in their relationship. This was Orpheus managing not only to win over Lโs rational brain, but his paranoid one, too. He hadnโt really thought that possible, if he were honest. โIf you make something with mint sometime, Iโll eat it โ he said after a moment. Heโd already said that, he knew. But this timeโฆhis meaning was just a little bit different. He meant, I will trust that you are trying to make it taste good. He meant, I will be there whenever you decide to make it, even if itโs in the future. He meant, I will eat it even if you donโt. If was possible Orpheus wouldnโt understand what he meant. But he found he hoped he did, at least partially.

Orpheus took another bite of his bread, trying to figure out what L was saying. Perhaps just trying to determine what had made this time different from all of the others. Perhaps it wasnโt different. Perhaps it was just that they had already spent a lot of time together. Perhaps it was that Orpheus had been making food for L long enough that if he had wanted to poison him, he likely already would have. He didnโt want L dead, though. He didnโt know how to explain that to him. It seemed, however, that the way he made him food was proving his point for him. When L spoke, Orpheus froze. It wasnโt the same voice L had used before. It wasnโt an intense, scary voice. It wasโฆ soft. Loud enough to be heard, but quiet enough that it felt a little bit gentle around the edges. It sounded like a promise, but he couldnโt quite tell what for. This was a turning point. Orpheus knew it was. This wasnโt the point where they decided that they were going to keep traveling together for the rest of their life, but it certainly seemed to be going along that track. Orpheus didnโt know if he would ever have to part ways with L, but if he didโฆ it would be after they had a day where Orpheus made something with mint in it. Orpheus could fool himself by avoiding making it for a long time, butโฆ he knew that logic didnโt hold up. L wasnโt saying he would leave as soon as they had something with mint. He was just saying that he would be here for it. And though Orpheus may not have been able to understand all of the meaning behind Lโs words, he understood enough. And it was enough to nearly reduce Orpheus to tears.

- It had become habit faster than L had expected it to. He had been alive a long time, now, and he had assumed his brain would take a while to shift in any direction, though he hadnโt known for sure how long. He didnโt know why, but this had been almost instant. He had stopped making sure Orpheus ate first entirely after the first time. Once he had admitted to himself that he wasnโt genuinely afraid of being poisoned by the other immortal, it had been a lot easier to let it go. He had also started sleeping a little better. Not more often, he still didnโt sleep much at all, but when he did, it was deeper, less restless. He was still waiting for Orpheus to make something with mint, though he hadnโt brought it up again. He didnโt know when it would happen, or what exactly it would mean, but he wanted to prove he had meant what heโd said. Heโd be there for it. Even if it didnโt happen anytime soon. He wasnโt guaranteeing his presence forever. But he didnโt have any plans to leave, either. It felt a bit like he was waiting for something to happen. Something that would either tell him to go, or make him decide to stay permanently. It hadnโt happened yet, though, so he was going to have to wait and see. For now, at least, he intended to stay. Especially today. He didnโt know for sure where they were going, but it was somewhere Orpheus was excited about, and he was curious to see it. He hadnโt said much, but it wa more the quiet that came from being lost in thought than one that meant anything.

Orpheus had noticed how quickly the change had happened. It was as though one moment L wasnโt comfortable with his presence, and the next he had decided he was okay with it. Orpheus didnโt know ow long L intended to stay, butโฆ he liked having him there. He wouldnโt ask him to stay forever. That was a request he didnโt know how to make. A request he wasnโt sure it was his place to make. Stillโฆ he found he didnโt want to imagine a future without L. He didnโtโ want to imagine a future alone (he never had), but now more often than not, when the thought occurred to him, that nebulous โother personโ was L. Perhaps he would lose him. Perhaps L would decide that he didnโt want to stay. Orpheus figured he would deal with that when and if it happened instead of worrying about it now, though. There were things that he wanted to show L. Things that had taken his breath away once, and that he was secretly hoping might be capable of doing the same now. He didnโt know if they would be able to go out onto the ocean, but at the very least they could wade into its shallows. Orpheus had avoided travelling by boat most of the time. You needed records to travel by boat, and there was the added factor that L might not have been able to follow him when he was still just รrebos. Orpheus didnโt want to risk losing his shadow then. Besides, it wasnโt as though land travel would kill him. He could withstand harsh weather and days of hunger much better than he probably could drowning. He didnโt know that for a factโฆ he had never tried to hold his breath underwater since heโd been cursed. โWeโre here,โ Orpheus whispered, the lapping sound of waves cutting straight through his thoughts. He took a step forward, then reached down and peeled off his shoes. โHave you ever waded across a shoreline?โ

Forever was a long time to keep a promise. L may have come to the conclusion that he didnโt think Orpheus was trying to kill him, and that he enjoyed his company. He couldnโt see himself choosing to leave, but he knew now how much time could change someone. He didnโt know what would happen to them, but he didnโt want to make any promises he couldnโt keep. So for now, he took it a day at a time. He wasnโt used to living without a long term plan, but so far, it seemed to be working. So far, he was just trying to let himself see where this took him. Even without knowing where they were going, he didnโt mind following Orpheus. As usual, he considered whether it could be a trap, but it wasnโt really an actual consideration anymore. It was almost like how heโd considered leaving later on in the four hundred yearsโฆit was habit to think it, but it was no longer something he genuinely might act on. Now, it was habit to consider Orpheus might try to hurt him, but it was no longer likely enough that he genuinely considered doing anything about it. Also, he could hear something, and he was curious about it. He wasnโt wearing shoes, naturally, so he didnโt need to take them off. Instead he moved past Orpheus, eager to see the place the other immortal had been excited about enough to suggest visiting. He didnโt know for sure that Orpheus was wary about choosing where they went, but considering heโd been picking for four hundred years already, it wasnโt a leap. โNo,โ he replied, looking back at Orpheus and tilting his head to one side. โIโve never been to the ocean. Are we going to wade across the shoreline?โ

Orpheus, in theory, had learned from making promises he couldnโt keep. He didnโt want to tell L that they would be together forever, that he would make the world safer for him, that nothing could separate themโฆ he knew those kinds of promises tempted fate. Those sorts of things, no matter how hard he tried, were out of his control. Besides, he doubted L would even want those promises. L was with him out of convenience. Out of necessity, actually. There was nobody else like them. If they didnโt want to be alone, they were forced to be with each other. It was cruel, in a way. L didnโt get to choose who to spend this time with. Orpheus had forced him into this position. No matter how many times L told Orpheus not to blame himself for what happened, Orpheus knew he was always going to. It was his fault that L had been cursed. His fault that L hadnโt been allowed to grow older. Distantly he wondered if being ready to accept death, if feeling like you had lived your life was something that came with age. Not the number of years, exactly, but the number of wrinkles on your face. Orpheus was old, but he had never aged. He was never going to age. โYes,โ Orpheus replied, shaking away the more morbid thoughts. He wanted to enjoy the moment they had now, not worry about the future that may or may not be coming. โEspecially if youโve never been to the ocean. You might get sand between your toes, thoughโฆโ he glanced at Lโs feet, then shook the thought away. โItโll be okay. The water will wash it away. I just hope the sand doesnโt bother you too much.โ Orpheus gave a small smile, then hurried towards the sound of waves. The sand was hot under his feet, but he didnโt mind. He could still burn, but it wasnโt something he was concerned about. Before long he had broken into a run, racing down towards the sight of the waves lapping lightly onto the sand.

L could guess that Orpheus still blamed himself for what had happened. He hadnโt been repeating it out loud, but he didnโt really need to. Orpheus seemed to be the sort of person who struggled to let things go, and it wasnโt exactly like L was making it easy to forget, since he was there at his side every day. StillโฆL hoped, eventually, he would stop blaming himself. He hadnโt asked for this. He was no more at fault than L was. Hades has cursed them, so it was Hadesโ fault. But he wasnโt thinking about that now. He knew there was a reason they were prone to considering their pasts, butโฆhe wanted to try and experiment the present, too. He had felt true awe when heโd seen the lights. Heโd have liked to see if he could feel that again. โOh, sand,โ he replied, shaking his hair back as they grew closer. โWeโll see. It depends on the sand.โ He followed, walking at first, then giving a small grunt of surprise as Orpheus ran, much as L had done when theyโd first seen the lights. He hesitatedโฆshould he follow, or let Orpheus get ahead of him? The sand was hot, and he was curious to see the ocean, so he put aside his worry and ran after Orpheus, letting his arms fly out to his sides as he did, the wind tossing his hair back.

Orpheus splashed into the waves, a grin crossing his features at the cool feeling of water against his bare feet. The sand had been hot, but the chill of the water immediately relieved any temporary pain he had felt. He could feel a piece of seaweed wrapping itself around his leg, but he didnโt mind it much. It was justโฆ nice. The air was salty and smelled like home, and Orpheus couldnโt help the wild freedom that swept across him, filling every crevice of his being. It was different from how he had felt seeing the lights. He had a feeling it was different from how L had felt seeing the lights, too. It was something L had never seen before, something he had likely been dreaming about for decades. This, for Orpheus, was like coming home, though there was no risk of running into anywhere that was filled with too many memories. He had been to the beach with Eurydice, but he had been to the beach with a lot of people. It was a neutral place. A place that usually meant moving on somewhere elseโฆ a place that meant something exciting was on the horizon. A journey, of sorts. There was no journey now, at least not one that Orpheus was aware of, but it filled him with awe nonetheless. โWelcome,โ Orpheus murmured as L joined him, the smile on his face soft and genuine. โI spent a lot of my childhood down by the seaโฆ I guess it still makes me feel like thereโs a little bit of wonder in the world. A whole life ahead of me thatโs about to unfold.โ

L didnโt have the same feelings tied to this place as Orpheus did. Heโd never been here, because Orpheus had never wandered here when he was following. It wasnโt the same as the lights, of course, he didnโt think anything would be, but he didnโt think that meant it was better or worse. It was justโฆdifferent. As every place was. He splashed into the water behind Orpheus, looking down in surprise at the difference in temperature. The sand had been hot, but the water was cool, and it wasnโt painful to walk in it. The sand was an odd texture, though not an unpleasant one. He stepped a little further in, eyes fixed downward so he could avoid stepping on the shells, though that proved harder than heโd anticipated. There wereโฆa lot of them. After a moment, he decided there were enough that it was likely alright to step on them, and moved in a little faster. He looked up, catching Orpheusโ smile, his own expression curious. What memories were trapped here? What feelings did this place evoke? โIโve never seen anything like it,โ he admitted softly, reaching down to feel the water with his fingertips. โI donโt even know how to swim. I suppose I never expected to be anywhere with enough water to be able to swimโฆI didnโt realize so much water could exist in one place at the same time.โ

You could see the ocean almost anywhere. There were very few kingdoms or countries that didnโt have a coastline. It wasnโt as rare or as breathtaking as the lights had been, it was justโฆ different. Familiar, but in a way that made Orpheusโ heart soar in his chest. He let his eyes close for just a moment, let the salty sea air soak through him, then gave a quiet sigh as his eyes flitted open to once again meet Lโs. The water was rushing over his feet, cool in a comfortable way โ not frigid, but enough to cut through the warmth of the day. It felt like coming home, in a way. It was odd, that there were still things that could do that. Things that, though he hadnโt experienced them in centuries, could make him feel comfortable and safe. He wasnโt necessarily safe here. He might never be safe somewhere again. But there was something about this, something about allowing himself this moment that made things feel like they were going to be okay. โYou should probably learn how to swim at some point,โ Orpheus murmured. From anyone else, the words may have sounded judgmental. From Orpheus, they were just concerned. โYouโre going to have to be near water at some point if you live for a few more centuries. It might save your life.โ He gave a small smile, wading just a little bit deeper so the water came up to his knees. He had his back to the waves so they wouldnโt bowl him over. โIโve always thought it was beautiful,โ he admitted, looking out over the water. โItโs a reminder of how big the world is. How much more there is to explore.โ

L watched the waves quietly, his eyes on the horizon, where the water just seemed to keep going forever. How much water was here? More then he could wrap his head around, probably. He hadnโt realized how big it wasโฆ He glanced down, watching the way it moved over his skin. His feet were covered completely, and the heat felt less intense that way, though the rest of him was still dry. โSave my lifeโฆโ he murmured, giving Orpheus a quick glance, head tilted. โI wonder if we can drown? Do we need air? Perhaps it would just take longerโฆโ He was thinking of how they still needed food and sleep, just less of it. Maybe air was that way, too. Maybe if they were stuck without it for a while, theyโd be okay, just not forever. He stepped a little further in, curiosity getting the better of him. It was peaceful. He wasnโt used to the waves, though. That was alrightโฆhe wasnโt going to be left behind. โIt is beautiful,โ he agreed quietly. โWe havenโt seen everything yet, have we? Somehowโฆthereโs more. Even if you have technically already seen this part.โ

Orpheus looked at L, a tiny smile crossing his face as he listened to L muse. Death felt like something far away and incredibly divorced from them. They were likely going to die at some point. Everything did, and it was built right into the curse. There were things that could kill them, they justโฆ wouldnโt age. They hadnโt tested if they would starve or die of dehydration either. If they did, though, it would take a much longer time than it would for a normal person. Orpheus pushed the thought away, kneeling down so he could press his hands into the sand. โI donโt know if we can drown or not,โ he admitted after a moment, letting the words hang in the air. He closed his eyes for just a moment, then pushed his fingers into the sand, coming out with a small creature in his hands. โThereโs always more to see,โ Orpheus confirmed, covering the small creature with one hand so it was protected from the sunlight. โI found a mole crab,โ he explained, giving a quiet laugh as it scuttled across his hands, tickling him with its little feet. He turned his gaze fully towards L. โIt canโt hurt youโฆ its pincers are small and they donโt bite or anything. Do you want to hold it?โ

L knew they would almost certainly die eventually. Technically, it got more likely with each passing dayโฆevery time they evaded death. L didnโt know that heโd had any major near death experiences, but he was sure he would if he lived long enough. Technically, traveling with Orpheus made both their chances worse, not better. Two immortals meant twice as many potential mistakes, which meant twice as many possible causes of death. He shook the morbid thoughts off. They didnโt really bother him, but they werenโt needed here. He might die, but heโd always known that. All things consideredโฆbeing immortal did make him a lot safer. It probably balanced out in the end. He focused on his companion, and the water, and the breeze. The waves tugged are him, threatening to unbalance him at their strongest, but he didnโt think he was in any real danger. Worst case scenario, heโd fall over. They were in the shallows for a reason. โMole crab?โ He repeated with interest, coming closer to Orpheus at the words. โI donโt know what that is. Itโsโฆโ He leaned in closer, stretching his neck out and tilting his head to get a better look at it. โOh, itโs small.โ He looked at Orpheus, blinking for a moment before he straightened up and hesitantly held out a hand, expression almost shy. โYes.โ

Orpheus didnโt think that travelling together decreased their chances of living. He figured that it increased it, actually. If there were two of them, they could look out for each other and make sure the other was safe. Two heads were better than one, it seemed, and humans were more likely to survive in groups. Maybe they were more conspicuous travelling together, but they had technically been โtogetherโ before. Orpheus had always been careful not to stay in one place for too long. It was easier to live somewhere quiet, completely alone except when he needed something, butโฆ it was lonely. On the other hand, big cities were good as long as you kept moving around, butโฆ Orpheus wasnโt sure he really wanted to stay in one place for long periods of time. He liked moving around if there was someone willing to move around with him. Carefully, Orpheus tilted his hands so that L could see the tiny creature inside. It was good size for a mole crab, and it seemed to have more or less adjusted to Orpheusโ palm. It would get restless in a minute or two if there was no water, but for now it seemed to be okay. โIt is pretty small, huh,โ Orpheus breathed, then very carefully lifted one hand to expose the crab to the sun. It scrambled back, but Orpheus shifted so it would back itself right into Lโs hand. Gently, he cupped his free hand over Lโs to comfort the creature and give it the shade it desired. โThey live under the sand, so they donโt like it when thereโs a lot of sun. It means theyโre exposed to predators.โ

L didnโt know how this would play out. He didnโt know what would happen, but that was true whether he stayed or not. It wasnโt like he could stay completely safe, no matter what he did. And, like it or notโฆhe had to admit that it was lonely, being a shadow. He had been invisible for so long, it had gotten used to it, but it didnโt make it less painful. And nowโฆnow, standing with the sand under his feet and the cool water against his skin, he could almost see himself staying indefinitely. Maybe Orpheus would stay, too. He watched as Orpheus shifted his hand, letting him see the small creature he was holding. It lookedโฆodd. Not what heโd expected, but not in a bad way. Orpheus clearly knew a lot about it. He knew how to keep it comfortable, and how to hold it without hurting it, and L couldnโt help being just a little bit nervous about letting it sit on his hand. What if he dropped it? Then it was crawling back and his eyes widened as it ended up on his hand, slightly heavier than heโd expected it to be, but not too much. He watched it for a long moment as Orpheus gave it some shade, protecting it from the sun, which it didnโt seem to like very much. โOh, I see,โ he replied, nodding a little. โThat makes sense. I suppose it can probably pinch other things that arenโt as large, so it isnโt completely defenseless.โ

Orpheus gave a small shrug, kneeling down to dip his hands in the water to clean the sand from them. He smiled at L as he looked at the small creature, then carefully placed his hands back over Lโs so that the crab could have a little bit of shade. โI donโt know if it really uses its pincers much, or if those are justโฆ something they have just in case. They mainly protect themselves by hiding out under the sand where nobody can find them. Except birds, sometimes, when they come out to get food from the ocean. The birds watch the tide come in, and they wait until the crabs come out of the sand to feel the waterโฆ or to feed, or something, I donโt really know details.โ It wasnโt as though the pincers were going to be very effective against a bird, either. Birds werenโt quite as big as humans, but they were probably more difficult to pinch if only because of how covered they were in feathers. Orpheus gave a small shrug, taking a few steps into deeper water. The tide seemed to be going out, so they would need to be careful to be gone before it came back in, butโฆ that was alright with Orpheus. He was just enjoying the time they did have here. โWould you like to learn how to swim?โ Orpheus asked suddenly, eyes catching on Lโs and staying there. It was a nice day for itโฆ if L wanted to learn, there was all the time in the world to teach him.

L gave a small nod, watching the small creature for a long moment. He didnโt know if itโs pincers were useful at allโฆhe figured they had to be good for something, but he didnโt really know for sure. Maybe they werenโt. They couldnโt really hurt L, anyway. He looked up finally, checking for any birds nearby before he leaned down and carefully released the mole crab back into the water. He watched it, waiting for it to disappear before he followed Orpheus a little deeper in, careful not to let the waves unbalance him too much. It got a little harder the further in they got, but he was confident he could still stay upright as long as they didnโt get too strong. โHm?โ He asked, looking up as Orpheus looked at him and hesitating. He had a point. It was a good day to learn, and they didnโt know when theyโd be back near water, not to mention how useful that skill could prove eventually. โI think so,โ he replied, giving a small nod and glancing at the water. โIt would be safer to know how, even if I canโt drown. Would you be alright with teaching me?โ

Drowning seemed about as likely for them as starving to death was, butโฆ that didnโt really mean much. Orpheus didnโt know if they were capable of starving to death, after all. All he knew was that they could get hungry, if enough time passed. And the hunger hurt the longer they went without eating. It seemed possible that they would die eventually if they stopped eating entirely. It seemed likely that they would die if they were deprived of air for a long enough time. They could probably survive longer than most humans, but that didnโt mean it would be very pleasant. โI wouldnโt have offered if I werenโt alright with it,โ Orpheus replied, voice quiet but genuine. He wanted to be helpful. Besides, he didnโt think there was a better use of time at the moment. There were other things they could do, of course, but they were here, and one of the most fun things to do in the ocean was swim, soโฆ โThe ocean is a good place to learn,โ Orpheus added, pooling water in his hand before letting it drip back down into the ocean. โThe water is different because itโs salty. It makes it easier to float than in freshwater.โ

Even aside from the chances of drowning, L knew there were other reasons to learn to swim. If he couldnโt drown, all that meant was he could end up at the bottom of rat ocean, very much alive, but trapped. That didnโt sound very appealing, Plus, someone else could be drowning, and he would be able to help if he didnโt know how to swim. Overall, it was probably just a good idea to learnโฆthere was certainly no harm in it. He blinked, half wanting to point out that Orpheus hadnโt technically offered to help, just asked if L wanted to learn, but since Orpheus had already said he was alright with itโฆit didnโt seem relevant. He looked at the water instead. โOh, of course, the salt in the water would make floating easier,โ he noted, putting a finger in the water and swirling it around. โItโs also a lot safer when we probably canโt drown. The worst thing that could happen is getting pulled out, but that probably wonโt happen if we donโt go very far.โ

They seemed to have somewhat different communication styles, which they would need to take note of if they were going to be spending much more time together. It didnโt really seem like it mattered in the meantime, though. Orpheus gave L a smile, leaning backwards so he was floating in the water. It was just deep enough that he was able to do so without ending up half in the sand. It would just continue to get shallower where they were as the tide went out, but for now it seemed okay. โThe difficult thing is that the waves may knock you over when weโre out here,โ Orpheus told L, considering that for a moment. Orpheus had learned in the ocean, but not on a shore. He had learned at a port, where there were fewer waves that could knock someone over. There was, of course, deeper water. โYou need to be careful of rip currents,โ he added, thinking. โTheyโll pull you out pretty quickly. If you get caught in one, donโt move. Just float and let it carry you out. Iโll come out and bring you back if that happens. If you struggle, youโre just likely to get hurt.โ

L watched as Orpheus leaned back, trying to see whether he was doing anything to stay afloat, or if it was just happening naturally. It looked easy enough. He wasnโt sure whether he wanted to try it just yet, but heโd have to if he planned to learn how to swim. โDo the waves get much bigger than this?โ He asked curiously, glancing out at the water. He still couldnโt believe how much of it there wasโฆit was possible that a lot of it could come in at the same time and knock him down. He didnโt know how it worked, but it did feel possible. โRip currents?โ He added, looking back at Orpheus. Heโd never heard of those beforeโฆhe had no idea what they might be. Heโd probably know it when he felt it, though. โHow far out would a rip current pull me?โ he asked. It felt relevant. If it was too far, Orpheus would have a hard time getting to him.

โThe waves might get bigger if the temperature goes bad,โ Orpheus said after a moment, glancing at the waves. They were fairly calm at the moment, though he didnโt know if that correlated more with the time of day than it did with the weather. Either way, Orpheus would make sure they both got out if the waves started to get aggressive. Nonetheless, he sent a quick prayer to Poseidon just in case. He doubted the gods were still looking after him, but he could hope. Besides, he thought they probably liked it when people prayed to them, especially now that there were more people in the world who didnโt believe in them. It couldnโt hurt anything to think a quick prayer for calm waves. He sent one to the winds, too, and a fond thought Calaisโ direction, just in case. โDo you see where the waves are breaking?โ Orpheus asked, pointing out where the white began crashing. โIt would likely only pull you out a little bit further than that. Just donโt panic if you get caught in one. I donโt see any near where we are, but there might be some as the tide starts to rise again.โ

L had never really paid the gods much attention. He knew about them, but theyโd never been a huge part of his life. Wellโฆat least until one of them had made himself a very big part of Lโs life, permanently. It didnโt mean he thought of sending a prayer now, though. He looked at where Orpheus pointed, nodding a little. He could see itโฆhopefully, it wouldnโt happen, but he wouldnโt panic if it did. It was just water. As long as Orpheus didnโt betray him and leave him to be pulled further and further out to see until he ended up too far to ever return, he would be fine. โAlright. Soโฆwhat do I do first?โ He asked, looking at the water again. It didnโt seem like it would be very easy to move in without touching the ground, but he knew it had to be possible. He leaned down, feeling the water with one hand, grateful it at least wasnโt too cold. Cold water was bad enough when you had to drink it in the winter, he couldnโt imagine being submerged in it.

Orpheus was used to warmer ocean temperatures. The first time he had ever stepped into a colder ocean had felt a little bit like walking right into ice. It was a bad feeling. Thankfully, he didnโt have to deal with it in this ocean. It was an actually tolerable temperature. Orpheus dipped down beneath the water, wetting his hair before appearing at the surface again and wiping the salt from his eyes. โOkay, so what youโre going to want to do is justโฆ lay back,โ he told L, demonstrating what it was like to lean back and trust the water to take your weight. He stood back up, then placed a hand gently on the small of Lโs back. โIโll support you like this so you donโt have to worry about going under. When you feel like youโre stable, just say โokay,โ and Iโll let go. You wonโt be able to hear yourself very well, but Iโll be able to.โ He didnโt know how to describe the weird feeling of having your ears underwater, but he figured it was probably a good thing to mention so L didnโt freak out.

L gave a small nod, preparing to lean back. Orpheus had done itโฆit would be fine. All he had to do was just hope the water would hold him. He looked at Orpheus, breathing in for a moment before he leaned back, closing his eyes and holding his breath in case it didnโt work. He didnโt really want to accidentally swallow salt water, and he had a feeling it would sting his eyes. He waited, half expecting to sink. The water felt stableโฆor maybe that was just Orpheusโ hand supporting him. Things really did sound very different, though. He couldnโt hear anything very well, it was all sort of muted. โIs this right?โ He asked, keeping his eyes closed. He was floating. He was actually floating, sort of.
