Orpheus gave a small nod, then a quiet, “Yes.” He knew that wasn’t the most useful, especially if L couldn’t hear him, but he wanted L to know that he was doing it right. Floating wasn’t the hard part, but it was the part that could save your life if you were in a tough spot. You could float for a pretty indefinite amount of time without consequence. Eventually you might get dragged down, but… floating was the first step to not drowning. Very, very carefully, Orpheus pulled his hands back so that L was floating in the water alone. He was standing in the same spot in case L needed support, but he wanted L to have the accomplishment of doing it right. Orpheus remembered learning to swim when he had been but a small child. He had been terrified when there was nobody there to hold him up, but when he had realized that he hadn’t needed anyone to, he had been ecstatic. He hoped it was similar for L.

It made sense that floating would be the most important thing to learn. As long as you were floating, you couldn’t be drowning. It wasn’t perfect of course, but it was a lot better than nothing. He could tell he was being supported. He could tell Orpheus was holding him up, which felt…oddly comfortable. Then Orpheus pulled back and he breathed in, trying not to panic. He wasn’t going to sink. He could float just like Orpheus could. And somehow…he didn’t sink. He opened his eyes a little bit. It was a very odd feeling, but not a bad one. “I’m floating,” he managed, his voice soft. He didn’t know how long it would last, but for now…

Orpheus could see the way L breathed in, the way his expression creased just a little bit as he was left to float on his own. Orpheus was right behind him, but it would be harder to tell that from the water than it would have been for an onlooker. Amazingly, L didn’t overbalance himself and sink. He managed to keep floating, which was a good sign. If he was in a desperate situation, he would at least be able to float. “You’re floating!” Orpheus confirmed, a smile spreading across his face. He tried to make his voice loud enough that L could hear without shouting at him. Even if it was for a purpose, shouting still felt… unnecessary. “You’ve got it,” he added, stepping back a little bit so he could see if there was anything he could suggest to make L’s floating any better. He didn’t immediately see anything. L, it seemed had good balance. After a few moments, Orpheus put his hand back against the small of L’s back, gently guiding him back up to a standing position. “How was that?”

Somehow, it was actually working. He hadn’t really expected to be able to do it this easily, if he was honest. Orpheus had made it look easy enough, but often enough, looks were deceiving. He had mostly expected to sink the moment Orpheus let go. Oddly enough, he hadn’t thought that was Orpheus’ intention. He had just thought Orpheus had known how to do it so long, he had forgotten how difficult it was when you were first learning. He assumed that was how the other immortal felt about his music, too…that was why it was difficult for a lot of people to believe they were actually really good at something. For them, it felt as though anyone could do it. The point was that he was floating, and though he felt like he would sink at any second, it hadn’t happened yet. He started a little as something touched his back, then relaxed as he realized it was Orpheus again and let himself be guided back to his feet. Water ran from his dark hair, and his clothes were soaked, but he still felt…light, almost. Like he was still floating untethered to anything but water. “I didn’t realize it would feel like that,” he admitted, glancing at Orpheus and pushing his wet hair out of his eyes so he could see. It had a tendency to fall over his eyes when wet, probably a side effect of its length. Too long to stay back, too short to be stopped by his shoulders.

“It’s nice, isn’t it?” Orpheus asked, a grin passing across his features. “It’s like the water is carrying your weight, so you don’t have to worry about anything but… relaxing.” He leaned back himself, floating for a few moments before he got back to his feet. His hair and clothes were sopping wet, though his hair was long enough that it didn’t fall into his face as L’s did. He resisted the urge to push L’s hair from his face, letting the other immortal take care of it. He still wasn’t sure how L felt about physical contact, and he didn’t want to cross any boundaries. They were still getting used to each other, in spite of how long they had travelled together. It really hadn’t been that long since L had stepped out of the shadows. Especially in the grand scheme of their life, the time they had spent together – together together, not just L following Orpheus. “That’s basically all you have to know how to do to survive. Of course… you either need to be able to find help or be pushed back to shore by waves unless you know how to actually swim, but if you get tired while swimming, or if you just need to take a break to breathe… that’s how you do it. Do you want to try again?” He tilted his head, unsure how quickly to move on to other steps. He had never really taught anything other than music before, and in that case he had just recreated what Apollo had taught him, starting with how to make notes and chords. This was entirely different.

L had to admit that Orpheus was right. It was nice…comfortable, even. He should have felt a lot more nervous about it, in theory. It was a form of giving up control over his surroundings, even if it was only in a very minor way. And there was always the fear of being at all vulnerable, even if he didn’t think Orpheus would attack…nor having his feet on the ground meant he would have no leverage to fight back. Even if he actually knew how to fight back, which he didn’t. It turned out that there weren’t all that many ways of learning self defense while not existing. Still, floating was surprisingly soothing. And fairly safe, as long as Orpheus was the only one there. “Alright. Let’s do it again,” he agreed, breathing out and beginning to lean back, slow enough for Orpheus to be able to support him again. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to find his balance otherwise, but he supposed he’d need to try it, since Orpheus wouldn’t be there to hold him up in a real emergency. “Would this be harder if the water was moving more?” He added after a moment, glancing at Orpheus. “I don’t know what it’s like further from land, but…I doubt it would be this steady.

Orpheus kept one hand out to brace against L, but he didn’t plan on using it unless L needed him to. He figured L was perfectly capable of floating by himself if he was given the chance, so Orpheus was more than happy to give him the chance. Besides, the worst that could happen here was L sink. Orpheus would be able to grab him almost seconds after it happened, and then they would be able to figure out why L sank instead of floated. He watched L for a moment, keeping his hand behind L’s back to steady him if he needed it. Somehow, Orpheus found he doubted L was going to need it. He was extraordinarily capable, and as far as Orpheus had seen, a quick learner. “It might be a little bit harder,” Orpheus replied quietly, looking out at the open ocean. “Where we are right now is about as turbulent as it gets unless you’re in the middle of a storm. You still have the waves buffeting you here. When you’re out on the ocean, the waves aren’t really… waves. Not like this, at least. You saw where they crested… beyond that, they’re just sort of… movements in the water. If you’re floating right, they just carry your body with them. You might get a little water in your ears or your nose, but you aren’t very likely to be pulled under or anything.”

L noticed immediately that Orpheus wasn’t supporting him this time. He didn’t mind, it made sense that he’d be learning to do it on his own next, even if he was a little bit nervous about the idea. It wasn’t as though he was going to drown. They were in very shallow water. If he sank, he could just stand back up. He just wasn’t sure he wanted to risk breathing any water. It wouldn’t kill him, but he’d done it while drinking before, and he hated the feeling. He leaned back the rest of the way, trying to stay as relaxed as he could. He assumed it would help. He hoped it would, at least. “I thought it would be choppier further out,” he admitted, breathing out slowly as he floated again, his body cradled by the water. “Is it really the same as it is here? Interesting…”

Orpheus gave a quiet nod, very carefully reaching a hand out to support L as a wave came crashing through. He lifted L above the crest of it, then let the other immortal continue floating. Ideally, they would be out a little bit further for this, but Orpheus didn’t want to risk them getting too far away from shore. He didn’t know how deep it was past the crest of the wave, either. He was confident in his own ability to make it back if something happened, and he was almost positive he could save L as well, but he would prefer not to scare either of them with such a situation. It would be best to just do it here and avoid the wave crests. “The waves here are actually more powerful,” Orpheus replied, well aware that his voice was probably muffled and difficult to make out. “The waves here can carry you all the way into shore. The waves out there… they can move you places, but they aren’t powerful enough to drag you in.”

Floating was easy, it turned out. It wasn’t so much doing something as it was not doing something. Not moving. Not panicking. Not thinking too much about sinking. Not doing things wasn’t always easier than doing them, but that was how it usually worked. It took less energy, anyway. It was passive. It got a lot harder when reflexes were involved, though. He tensed as he felt the wave, trying to keep his balance as best he could, he breathed in sharply as he felt himself sink a little, overcompensating the other direction. Orpheus’ hand did stop him from sinking completely, but he coughed as water splashed into his face and flailed for a long moment before he made it to his feet again, rubbing at his eyes. “Sorry,” he said when he could speak again, shaking some of the water off. “Wave.”

“You don’t have to apologize,” Orpheus replied, brows furrowed in concern as he did his best to help L right himself. The wave had been relatively strong, and Orpheus understood why it had bowled L over like it had. It was hard to float when the waves were that strong, particularly after they had crested. Orpheus glanced out at the ocean, then back at L. “Are you alright?” he asked after a moment, making sure that L hadn’t been too frightened. “Can you breathe alright?” He knew how terrifying it was to be bowled over like that, even when you did know how to swim. It was difficult to tell which way was up, and that sort of disorientation… he pushed the thought away. L seemed to be alright. “It might be hard to believe,” Orpheus managed, looking out at the deeper water, “but it might actually be easier to practice floating if we can get you out a little bit more. You might not be able to stand in the water, but you’ll be able to float without having to worry about waves like that knocking you over.”

L was a little shaken, but he was doing his best to ignore it. It wasn’t a big deal…so he’d gotten knocked over. He was in the shallows for a reason. He couldn’t drown in this amount of water, even if he was physically capable of drowning, which wasn’t a certainty. Still. It had been a little…surprising. He hadn’t been ready for it. It was just a little bit…frightening. So he had to hesitate at the suggestion, eyes narrowing as he looked out at the water. “If I can’t stand up, how will I stop floating?” He asked after a moment, glancing back towards Orpheus. “If I can’t swim or touch the bottom, if I stop flowing, won’t I just…sink?” Maybe he was supposed to start floating here and let Orpheus pull him a little further out? He wasn’t sure about it, but he did want to learn to swim, and he didn’t know when there would be another chance.

Orpheus looked out at the crest of the waves, considering L’s concern. The last thing he wanted to do was frighten L instead of teaching him, but… he didn’t know how to teach this without having L take at least a few risks. He pondered the question for a moment before he looked at L, a small smile touching his lips. “You’ll sink, yes, but I’ll be there to hold you up. The next thing you have to learn is how to tread water, anyway. It’ll be easier when you can’t feel the bottom. And the floating will be much easier when you don’t have these strong waves to contend with. Don’t worry, you might be able to feel the bottom… I don’t actually know how deep this water is, but… it won’t be dangerous. I won’t let you breathe in any water.” It wasn’t so much a concern about L drowning – they had no proof that they were even capable of drowning. But Orpheus knew that breathing in water was frightening even if it wasn’t capable of killing you.

L glanced out at the waves, trying to decide how he felt about going further out. It didn’t seem too reckless, really, but then again, he didn’t know for sure that he couldn’t drown. If he could, going out further was probably a bit dangerous. Then again, everything was dangerous. He could theoretically die from most things. He’d said he wanted to learn to swim, hadn’t he? He looked back at Orpheus and gave a firm nod. “Alright,” he agreed, beginning to move a little bit further out. “Do you think there might be fish further out here? I’d like to see a fish, I think. I’d like to see most things that live here.” Like the crab. He wanted to see more things like that. Not having any sort of idea what to expect here was sort of thrilling, in its own way.

Orpheus looked out just a little bit further, then gave a small nod. He was about to start leading L out further when his eyes widened and he froze in place, spellbound. He grabbed L’s wrist, his other hand pointing out towards beyond where the waves were cresting. “L!” he gasped, tone filled with abject delight, “Look! Do you see… there! Out… follow my finger… dolphins!” He grinned, turning to look fully at L instead of at the dolphins. They weren’t very close, but they were close enough to see that it was a pod of four or five, leaping over the waves and surfacing for just a moment before they dove back down again with nothing other than a small flick of their tails to betray that they had ever been there in the first place. “I think they’re striped dolphins!” He added, referencing the black stripes that ran from their eye to the tips of their tails. It was hard to see from this distance, especially with their images refracting off of the waves, but… still.

L wasn’t looking up when Orpheus spoke. He was watching the water, trying to make sure he didn’t step on any crabs or into a deep part by accident while still going further out. He didn’t want to be submerged if he could help it…he wasn’t sure that would be very pleasant. Orpheus seemed fairly comfortable in the water and L was willing to give it a try, but that didn’t mean he was going to stop being careful. Anything could happen if he wasn’t paying attention. He wasn’t watching Orpheus, though. He started and turned as the other immortal seized his wrist, searching his expression with wide eyes as he tried to figure out what was wrong. Only nothing was wrong. He followed Orpheus’ finger, searching for the source of his excitement until his gaze caught on the figures he was pointing at. Dolphins…he’d called them dolphins, hadn’t he? He stared, eyes wide in something like awe as they disappeared again, diving deeper to go wherever it was they wanted to go. He wasn’t even thinking about the water anymore, or the depth, or the waves. He was vaguely aware that Orpheus was still holding his wrist, but he wasn’t quite thinking about that, either. “They’re so…pretty,” he managed after a second, still looking out where they’d been a moment earlier. “Dolphins…”

“There!” Orpheus exclaimed, pointing where the dolphins had resurfaced. He was curious what they were doing. It didn’t seem that they were just coming up for air. They seemed to be… hunting? Or perhaps playing. He had heard stories of dolphins playing as though they were people, but he didn’t know if those stories were true. He wanted to believe that they were. They were… oddly human creatures, for animals that didn’t look anything like humans. It had been years since Orpheus had seen any, but he felt his heart swell a little bit at the sight of them breaching the water once more. They were majestic in a way he couldn’t really describe. Not as fantastic as whales, perhaps, but he thought they had a little bit more character than whales did. They were certainly more playful, and almost definitely more curious. “They are pretty, aren’t they?” Orpheus asked, a grin crossing his lips and seeming to get stuck there. He didn’t want to look away, but he also wanted to see how L was reacting to the dolphins. He had seen L react to the Northern Lights, and that had been nearly as beautiful as the lights themselves. Perhaps more beautiful, because the reaction had been so human. It was like that now, too. There was always more to discover. The two of them could still be astounded by things they had never seen before.

L stood on his toes (or tried to - seeing as he was standing on wet sand, he went down, not up), craning his neck to try and see the dolphins better as they reappeared. He had thought they were probably gone after they’d dived under the waves again, but he was surprisingly pleased that he had another chance to get a look at them. Odd creatures, so different from humans, so…fragile. Mortal. He didn’t follow that thought. This was no place for wandering minds. The sand was soft and ever changing under his toes, and the wind was sharp and salty to the taste, tugging lightly at his wet clothes and hair. He supposed there was something impressive he could say about them. Something profound, or fascinating, something that would impress Orpheus. He didn’t know when that had become a factor in what actions he took, but once he’d had the thought, it was hard to pretend he hadn’t. He didn’t say whatever deep thing he could have thought of, though. What he said, very softly, was… “Wow.” And then he found himself looking at Orpheus instead. Trying to catch all the magic in the moment, not just the half that was out there. He didn’t want to miss it. He didn’t know how long it would last. And maybe, just maybe he wanted to beat Orpheus to it. If he looked quickly enough, he might be able to see how Orpheus looked when he didn’t think L was watching. And that felt…important, somehow.

Orpheus hadn’t seen dolphins often, but he found that when he did, they were usually up to something that took a while in one area. They had followed the Argo for a while, jumping out of the water whenever a crew member threw a bit of fish overboard. They had been joking about how the dolphins were likely to follow Atalanta home. She hadn’t seemed terribly opposed to the idea. Orpheus shook the thought away. He wasn’t sure what the dolphins were doing here, but they were the only two people in sight. Surely the majestic creatures weren’t there for them. They had just… gotten lucky, it seemed. He gave a quiet laugh at L’s reaction, turning back to watch the dolphins for a few seconds more. They really were impossible to describe. It was easy to forget sometimes that there were things beyond what they saw every day. Orpheus wondered sometimes if there were enough animals in the world for them to see a new one every day and not run out. Dolphins had once seemed relatively commonplace to him. Now… his smile never left his face. He didn’t know if the cetaceans knew they were there, but he was half afraid to move in case it alerted them that there were humans nearby. When Orpheus turned back to glance at L one more time, L was already looking at him. Orpheus held his gaze for just a moment, a blush moving across his features. “Thank you for sharing this with me.” The words were soft, almost snatched away by sea breeze. But the meaning was unmistakable.

It was odd to think that the dolphins weren’t there for them. Did they even know anyone could see them? This felt like such an important moment to L, but to the dolphins themselves, it was just another day. They hadn’t intended to impact anyone. They would never know that they had. Had L ever impacted anyone that way? He had lived long enough that anyone he had was almost certain dead by now, and he had been invisible for the vast majority of that time, so he had to assume he probably hadn’t. How many people had ever even noticed he existed? And how many incredible things had he himself missed, simply because he hadn’t been in the right place to see them. He wasn’t a fool. He knew why Hades had called this a curse. Immortality was not an easy weight to bear, but… He’d never have stood on the beach and seen a dolphin, if he hadn’t happened to be walking down that road at that moment. He gave his head a small shake. As it turned out, life was stranger than he had ever given it credit for. He was still watching Orpheus when the other immortal looked back. L felt a bit of color rise in his own cheeks too as their eyes met, but he didn’t look away. Orpheus was a part of whatever strange life this turned out to be, now. Maybe one permanently, but maybe that didn’t matter so much after all. He hesitated at the words. First he took in the fact that his presence on this day, this hour, this second in their lives was worth being thankful for. Then he weighed his response. Finally, he just said what he was thinking. “I am… grateful. To be here. And for all of this."

Orpheus didn’t know if he’d that kind of effect on anyone’s life. He hoped he did… he hoped that he crossed into his life for just long enough to remind them about something important to them, but there was nothing he could do to influence that one way or another. He had lived long enough that it seemed almost impossible that he hadn’t, but… chance was a strange thing. Once, Orpheus had believed in fate. He had believed that everything was laid out in front of humanity, that there was a plan that people followed and steps that they took that they couldn’t quite get out of no matter how hard they tried. It had been long enough that he found he doubted that now. He was far more inclined to believe that life was driven mostly by chance. The things that weren’t pure luck were driven by human choices. Or… perhaps it was human choice that created chance, with a few small exceptions. Human choices couldn’t make a volcano explode, but they might be responsible for the destruction of a village. That was far from the point. Nobody – human or god – had decided that this specific pod of dolphins was going to come by this specific beach while L and Orpheus were there. It had just happened, and there they were. Two immortals seeing something that was more beautiful than it had any right to be. Orpheus had a feeling that life would be defined from this moment forward by what they thought of as beautiful. This moment here… while it wasn’t quite as beautiful as the lights, it was just as beautiful as any masterpiece Orpheus had seen painted. “I’m grateful, too,” Orpheus whispered, his gaze not leaving L’s. If his heart was beating more quickly than usual, he didn’t notice. “I think there’s still a great deal for us to show each other, and… and discover together. I’m glad we get this chance.”

L had never been good with words. Not the way certain other people seemed to be, at least…he could usually carry an argument or make a point, but he was blunt. He didn’t know how to weave emotion into it, or how to sound kind, even if he really did mean to be kind. But somehow, he didn’t feel like he needed to be eloquent here. He watched the dolphins, trying not to blink, in case they were gone when he opened his eyes again. They were fast enough to disappear, he thought, in even a moment. He hoped they stayed just a little bit longer. His hair was still damp, but it wasn’t dripping as much anymore. The breeze should have made it cold, but it didn’t. And Orpheus seemed to feel it as deeply as L did. “I wonder if they can see us, too,” he said after a moment, breathing out in a quiet sigh. “Maybe they’re as excited to see a couple of humans on this beach as we are to see them.”

“Oh,” Orpheus whispered, pulling his gaze back from the dolphins to watch L instead. He had a point. The dolphins likely didn’t see humans on the beach very often. It wasn’t like there was a settlement anywhere nearby. They were the only humans around, likely for miles. Orpheus considered that for a moment, a smile passing across his features for just a moment before he gave a tiny nod. “I think… they might be able to,” he said after a moment. “Do you see the one that looks a little bit smaller than the others?” He pointed, eyes flashing with excitement as it broke the surface again. “That one. I bet… I bet it’s younger than all the others. I wonder if this is the first time it’s ever seen humans before. If it’s the first time for you, and the first time for it. If this moment is something you’re both sharing. Sharing deeper than I can understand, deeper than its parents can understand as they guide it towards the proper hunting grounds.” It may have been a fanciful idea, but there was no way to prove it wrong. Which made Orpheus tempted to believe in it.

L turned his attention to the dolphins again, searching for the one Orpheus was trying to point out. There…he didn’t see one that seemed to be smaller than the others. Not by too much, but it was noticeable if he was watching for it. Was Orpheus right? Was it the first time it had seen a human? Was it possible that he was as strange and wonderful to it as it was to him? He found he wanted to believe that. He knew it probably wasn’t true, but…the way Orpheus said it made him feel like it could be, somehow. Like maybe they were as amazing as the things they could see, if only anyone ever saw them. “Then I’ll remember it,” he said quietly. “Even if it doesn’t. I’ll remember for both of us.”

Orpheus had decided a long time ago to believe the best of a situation. It hadn’t saved Eurydice, and it likely couldn’t save either him or L if it came down to it, but it made living an immortal life far more tolerable. If he could just… believe in the best, then maybe it was true. Maybe the dolphin was sharing a moment with L. Maybe it was wondering the exact same thing they were. It was a wide, mysterious world. There were so many things they couldn’t prove, and there was no harm in believing in small miracles. “Good,” Orpheus breathed out, watching one of the dolphins throw itself into the air, arcing high above the water and splashing all around it as it dove back down under. He gave a quiet laugh, then turned back to look at L. “I think it appreciates it. And… I think it’s kind of you to remember. It’s… odd to think that there are so many things that have existed on this Earth and who have since left… things that have nobody to remember they were ever here.”

The leap surprised L a little, and he leaned forward without meaning to, trying to get even a tiny bit closer. He couldn’t actually come near enough to touch it, but…even an inch nearer felt better than not. It was the lights once again, a similar sort of wonder, even if it wasn’t quite as extreme as that had been. He briefly considered whether it wasn’t as strong…but he didn’t think that was it. It was the same feeling, the same unbearable joy, the same incredible love for existing, for not only being a thing himself, but for sharing that experience with other things…if he were a poet, he might have chased this feeling. If he were an artist, he’d have wasted canvas after canvas trying to capture it in the way the colors curved and edged. But he was just L. He didn’t know if there was a way for him to express it. So he settled with feeling it instead, and quietly hoping maybe someone else felt it too. “Secrets,” he murmured, the thought mostly remaining in his head. He realized a moment later that the fragment wouldn’t be understood as well without context. He glanced at Orpheus. “Secrets, only no one carries them. It’s hard to imagine how many things there are that no one knows…whether someone did, and didn’t tell anyone, or no one was in the right place at the right time.”

“There are no secrets that have no carriers,” Orpheus replied, glancing over at L. “The things that no person was alive to witness, the things that nobody can speak of… the trees saw them. They whisper their stories to the saplings that grow beneath them, the seeds that are carried by the wind… or maybe the mountains saw them, or the waves. And if no one else… then the wind. Just because we can’t understand the wind doesn’t mean it isn’t trying to say something.” Orpheus knew it was a poet’s way of seeing the world. He knew that L might not see it the same way he did. He knew that there was so much knowledge lost every day because people died, or because nobody human was around to capture a moment. There were experiences that nobody in the world would ever live, and that was… a devastating thought, if he were honest. But those moments didn’t just cease to exist just because nobody was there to watch. “I’ve heard someone ask… if a tree falls down in a forest, and there’s nobody around to hear it… did that tree make a sound? I think… yes. I think that those sorts of moments aren’t lost just because nobody human was there. Just because the only people that were there are gone. The dead carry secrets. They share them with each other, and… and maybe one day they’ll share them with us.”

L glanced to the side, watching Orpheus’ face as he spoke. He might have been looking for a lie he wouldn’t be able to hear…trying to see if he was being deceived. He didn’t think that way why he looked, though. He may have held everything like it could be something else, he may have trusted little and believed less, but… This time, he thought he was trying to see what Orpheus looked like when he said it. Maybe it was because he didn’t know how to think like that. Maybe it was because he wanted to. Or maybe he just wanted to remember it. The expression and the words as one. “It doesn’t seem possible,” he murmured finally, looking away again. “It’s not…I don’t think the question is whether it happened, exactly. A tree falls…when it hits the ground, the ground is what makes the sound. It doesn’t matter if anyone hears it. I think the question is whether that moment can be said to exist after it happens, if there’s no one’s memory to carry it. When a candle is blown out, the fire doesn’t exist anymore, does it? Not unless someone remembers it. And then only in that person’s mind, unless they tell someone. I suppose…I don’t understand. How anything without a memory can carry a secret.”

“Do you think,” Orpheus whispered, “that the mountains have no memories?” He glanced over to his left, noting the mountain range sprawling several miles to the side. He hadn’t spent nearly as much time in the mountains as he had at sea, but he knew enough about them to know the sorts of secrets they carried. The sorts of memories they held. There were only a few they were willing to yield to human eyes, but there were plenty more that existed. “I’d like to show you some of the secrets they’re willing to tell,” he admitted, grabbing L’s hand impulsively. He wasn’t sure if the other immortal would shake him off, but he wasn’t entirely sure he cared. He wanted to show him how many things weren’t entirely forgotten. How many things weren’t just lost to time. “Have you ever seen a tree when it’s been cut down?” Orpheus added, hazel eyes searching dark. “There are rings that show its growth pattern. It shows how well a tree grew each year. You can see which years held rain and which ones were years of drought… I’ve met people who base their faith around just that. The trees have memories. And the waves… well, do they not come back to the same spot? Do they not wax and wane and reveal the same stretch of beach, reclaiming things and leaving shadows of secrets behind? He bit his lip, then pulled L a little bit deeper into the water. “Here,” he whispered, leaning down to grab a seashell. “What is this, if not a secret? What is this, if not a memory of the creature that once called this home?”

It was impossible not to listen. It was impossible not to hear the way Orpheus’ voice, quiet though it was, seemed to grow, existing as something in the air, something apart from either of them. It felt like there was more of Orpheus than merely stood beside him, somehow. Like this was a feeling that shouldn’t have fit into words, but somehow did, so long as it was Orpheus saying it. He didn’t pull away as Orpheus took his hand, though he couldn’t have said whether it was because of the surprise, or something else. That, too, was a language he had never learned. A language he had assumed couldn’t exist, because…because it was a language he had always associated with loneliness. He didn’t know how he could be feeling it without also feeling the loneliness. He let himself be pulled further into the water, the words more than the hand tugging him in. His eyes caught on the shell - curved, ridged, had it always looked like that or was this too what Orpheus meant, a memory that could be touched - but only for a moment before he was looking at the other immortal again, his eyes, the intensity of his features, so different from L’s, but no less. It occurred to him that he was looking at the lights again. That somehow, that thing he had never understood, that thing he had thought would be lost if ever he tried to do more than allow it to invade every inch of him, was being spoken. Orpheus knew the language of the stars. He didn’t let go of his hand. He tried to keep meeting his eyes. It was impossible not to. “I wish…” he managed at last, his voice rough to his own ears in comparison to Orpheus’. “I wish I saw the world you do. I wish I could live in it, if only for a moment.”
