So I wrote this short story about Sunstar's death scene in more detail as it happend offscreen and in the story I gave Thistleclaw a better reason to be in the dark forest and this story is also my canon interpretation of what really happend behind the scenes. There may be spelling and grammer issues but I hope u guys enjoy!
Thistleclaw's last resort:
“So, are you ready to carry out our plan?” His former mentor, Thistleclaw approached Tigerclaw confidently, malice showing in his eyes.
“Yes, I have been watching that twoleg; they let their dogs roam around this time so we need to get going if we want this plan to work”. Tigerclaw responded to the grey and white tabby tom who nodded sharply.
For a while, his apprentice, Darkpaw had been eager to show off his skills that he had learnt as an apprentice to the Thunderclan leader, Sunstar. Tigerclaw and Thistleclaw had come up with their masterplan that they were going to watch unfold where he, Sunstar, Thistleclaw and Darkpaw would go on patrol to snake rocks, using Darkpaw’s urge to impress the leader with his hunting and tracking abilities. Meanwhile, the two toms rounded up Darkpaw and Sunstar and they all went out on patrol.
“So Darkpaw, let’s see if you can pick up any scents” Tigerclaw meowed gruffly. The lean tom piped up and immediately started sniffing the air. He was one of the best trackers in the clan and was always willing to please Tigerclaw in training and he’d been even more enthusiastic to please the leader.
Suddenly Darkpaw jerked his head up startled. “I smell dogs!” He gasped, frightened, his ears were back and he was shaking. The tom may have been an enthusiastic apprentice and amazing tracker, but around fighting he always talked about how he dreamed of fighting, but in an actual fight would always shake and run away just like a coward.
Indeed Tigerclaw had smelled dogs, just as the plan was supposed to go and he and Thistleclaw showed each other a subtle, satisfied glance.
“There are two by the sounds of things” Sunstar meowed darkly “and they must be able to smell us as I can hear them getting closer. The sound of barking and excited drumming of paws got louder and louder. The dogs were roaming free as the twoleg let them roam wherever they wanted and could emerge at any heartbeat.
Suddenly the dogs burst out, thundering toward the cats as they all braced themselves.
“Darkpaw! Go back to camp and get Bluefur and a patrol to get help!” Tigerclaw ordered his apprentice sharply
“But-but…” Darkpaw stammered before Sunstar cut him off, ordering to find help before all four cats were ripped to pieces.
The young tom then bolted away, he clearly wanted to please the leader by protecting his clan, but the apprentice was far too much of a coward to do so. The plan was going according to plan as Bluestar was sure to lead the patrol to come and help them herself as she’d do anything to protect her clan as well as the fact that she was very close with Sunstar as leader and deputy. This was good as they had plan to lead Bluefur into a trap too so that Thistleclaw could become leader as he was popular and many cats thought he would. Sunstar was also weaker as he had been ill with greencough recently, lost a life and was still recovering from it.
“Quick! Climb that tree!” Thistleclaw yowled to the patrol. Tigerclaw and Thistleclaw bounded towards the tree, but Sunstar was slower in his weakened state. Tigerclaw scrambled up onto the first branch, Thistleclaw scrambled up beside him and they were able to perch on one more branch above that one so that they were out of the dog’s reach. Sunstar was trailing up the tree much slower with the dogs’ mouse lengths away from his tail.
But the still strong ginger tabby tom was able to whisk himself away from the dog’s snapping jaws just in time as they growled after him.
“Fox-dung the dogs were supposed to catch up him by now!” Tigerclaw thought to himself angrily wondering what to do.
Sunstar was able to get over the first branch slower and climbed toward the branch Tigerclaw and Thistleclaw were on. But Thistleclaw stood on the branch so that he blocked Sunstar from climbing onto the branch.
“Thistleclaw, help me” Sunstar puffed, clearly out of breath from the climb. Instead, Thistleclaw smirked down at the leader, eyes narrowing. At that point Tigerclaw knew exactly what he would do.
At once Thistleclaw slashed Sunstar’s cheek, violently shoving him from the branch - enough to make him fall from the tree. Sunstar’s face had an unimaginable look of terror on his face at his clan mate’s betrayal as he saw both cats mercilessly watching him fall.
Time seemed to go in slow motion as the leader fell to his demise, when he finally hit the ground with a thud, despite landing on all four paws the dogs rounded on him and he was soon thrashing wildly as the dogs sank their fangs into his flesh.
Soon there were yowls from their clanmates heard in the distance and both cats immediately skirted down from the tree to pretend to fight the dogs so that they didn’t look suspicious. The Thunderclan patrol thundered out of the bushes, Bluefur in the lead closely followed by Leopardfoot, Redtail, Brindleface, Lionheart and Dappletail.
Sunstar was clearly already dead by the time they reached the ground and Thistleclaw sprang into action attacking the bigger dog, raking his claws down its back. While Tigerclaw rounded on the other dog, sinking his teeth into its leg. Bluefur and Leopardfoot came to help Tigerclaw while the rest of the patrol helped Thistleclaw. While fighting, Tigerclaw glanced to the side at one of the rocks hoping that there would be an adder inside as it was early new-leaf when adders were common around snake rocks.
The plan was to shove Bluefur beside one of the rocks, disturbing the adder, making it emerge and bite her so that she would die from the venom and that way Thistleclaw would be the obvious candidate for leader while Tigerclaw would be deputy.
Tigerclaw quickly slipped away from the dog, hoping he could find a way to disturb an adder that was nearby to where Bluefur was fighting the dog, luckily neither Bluefur nor his mother, Leopard noticed him move away as they were too busy fighting the dog.
Tigerclaw flicked a big enough stone against the rock making a loud thud, hoping an adder was in there and it would emerge from the hole in the rock. And sure enough, Tigerclaw saw its beady eyes and it’s tongue flick out as it started moving to see what was going on. Relieved, he sprung back into the fight, away from the snake and saw that Bluefur was fighting the dog with her back pretty close to the rock and he needed to find a way to shove her toward the rock as the snake was poking its head out now.
Tigerclaw moved towards Bluefur while slashing the dog, hoping that would work in order to kill the deputy. “Come on move closer!” he thought impatiently.
Suddenly he heard a startled yowl. Satisfied he knew he heard Bluefur’s yowl signifying that she was bitten. The dogs then started fleeing, scared. The cats were so intent on watching the dogs flee that only then did they hear a yowl of pain. They whipped around and then Tigerclaw took a closer look and realised it wasn’t Bluefur’s yowl…it was Leopardfoot.
His mother had two gaping snake bite marks on her shoulder; she struggled to get up, only to fall back down again from the burning pain and gasping.
“Leopardfoot!” Bluefur gasped. The two she-cats were good friends as they’d grown up together. Redtail stood beside her shocked at what had just happened to his older sister. “It’s an adder bite.” Bluefur gasped before turning to Thistleclaw and Tigerclaw “Did the dogs kill him?” she whispered her voice fraught with panic.
Thistleclaw nodded pretending to look solemn “The dogs caught him before he could climb a tree to escape.” He told her.
“We have to get both of them back to camp!” Brindleface gasped “Leopardfoot needs to see Featherwhisker and Spottedleaf immediately!”
Tigerclaw knew that their plan had failed, but he was too shocked and numb from his mother, his only kin left, having been bitten to even process the fact that their plan had failed.
By the time they had got back to camp Leopardfoot was already seizing and sometime later despite the medicine cats’ best efforts she had died too from the poison. As for Sunstar, the clan believed the lie that Thistleclaw had told them about his death.
It took Tigerclaw a while to process that their plans may have succeeded in killing Sunstar, but that he was also indirectly responsible for his mother’s death. Thistleclaw may have been furious that he didn’t get to be leader as Bluefur would go to receive her nine lives, but inside Tigerclaw was hurting, however he would never show this to his clanmates as he didn’t want to show weakness in front of them.
As time passed, Tigerclaw didn’t want to have anything to do with Thistleclaw blaming him for his mother’s death as the plan was Thistleclaw’s idea, but Tigerclaw decided that he would rule the forest with or without Thistleclaw.
