โซ โซ THE DEEP ROADS โซ โซ
Corryn Sabrae
Corryn eyed the new elf โ Erin โ for a moment, studying her carefully. Her vallaslin was an unusual color โ a deep red, similar to her hair, and it wasnโt one that Corryn had seen before. Sheโd seen the design, of course; it was simple, elegant sweeping designs that ran along her cheekbones and up to her temples in a pattern dedicated to Mythal. Rhys had a similar design, as did many other Dalish. Mythal was situated higher up in their pantheon, after all; it made sense that many Dalish would wear her symbols. Corryn mightโve, if she hadnโt chosen those dedicated to June. When she was little, she thought sheโd be a great craftsman. And then her magic had come, and her dreams had been taken away. Sheโd been bitter for a long time, and if she was honest with herself, she still held onto those emotions. If she let them go, it would be letting go of that part of her life completely. Varryn had told her to let the past go, but how could she? She was Dalish, one of the People; their entire way of life was centered around preserving as much of the past as they could. To let all of that goโฆ to cut away whatever ties she had to the people sheโd loved and sacrificed everything to saveโฆ she couldnโt do it. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
โWell, I was in the area and it looked like you guys could use a hand. So I thought, โhey, why not? Itโs been a few days since I last faced imminent death.โโ The newcomer quipped, placing her hands on her hips. Despite herself, the corners of Corrynโs mouth twitched upwards in a smirk. She had a sharp wit, that was for certain, and a dry sense of humor. Sheโd fit right in Corrynโs little band, but the white-haired elf wasnโt sure if she could trust the newcomer just yet. Sheโd helped quite a bit against the darkspawn, but circumstances often pushed people to become allies, and that wasnโt always grounds for a real sense of trust; more of a begrudging acknowledgement and acceptance.
After a moment, the elf offered her hand in a formal greeting. Corryn took it in a firm grip. โActually, my nameโs Erin, and Iโm from clan Lavellan. In the Free Marches? I met your Warden-Commander in Kirkwall and he invited me to join you.โ Erin shrugged. โBetter late than never, I suppose. Sorry to ruin the mystique for you.โ
โLavellan,โ Corryn repeated. She searched her mind for a moment, and then clicked her fingers when she remembered. โYes, Iโve met members of your clan before. In the last gathering, actually, but I do not recall seeing you.โ Not that it was a usual occurrence to meet every member of a particular clan. Considering Corryn had been clan Sabraeโs First at the last gathering, most of her time had been spent with the Keepers and Firsts of the other clan, and Erin was clearly neither. For one, Keepers and Firsts were always mages. And two, Corryn had met Lavellanโs First โ and they were not this elf that stood before her now.
Corryn frowned. โVarryn is in Kirkwall already?โ she questioned, narrowing her grey eyes. Worry flashed through her gaze โ there and gone in a heartbeat, so swift it was almost impossible to catch. Varryn was not supposed to be in Kirkwall for a few days yet; theyโd agreed when Corryn left that heโd meet up with her one week after sheโd landed in the Free Marches. Thatโd give her enough time to corral the recruits, prepare them for the Joining, and then meet up with Varryn at Sundermount. There, heโd guide them through the Joining itself, and theyโd all pack up and head for Ferelden. If Varryn was here now, that meant something had gone wrong, or he suspected something would go wrong. It boded poorly and set Corryn on edge. In all the years sheโd known Fereldenโs Warden-Commander, he rarely strayed from whatever plan heโd laid out. He was punctual to a fault and was not a fan of surprises. If he was abandoning the plan heโd laid out before, something was very wrong.
But she kept her worries from the rest of the group, for now at least. The recruits had enough to concern them at the moment; Rhys had taken an arrow to the gut, and Lucan was decorated with several dozen shallow cuts that looked fairly painful. Corryn, Daya and Gemma were more or less unscathed, as was Erin by the looks of it, but that was likely due to their experience fighting darkspawn and a bit of luck. Despite the lack of physical injuries, Corryn was exhausted, and felt like sheโd been kicked by a horse. She sighed.
โEach of you,โ she ordered, pointing at Erin, Lucan and Rhys, โtake one of these vials and fill it with blood from one of these darkspawn.โ She reached in one of her packs and fished out three glass vials, handing one to each recruit. โBe swift about it, too. The sooner thatโs done, the sooner we can leave these damn deep roads.โ
When the recruits went to follow out her orders, Corryn let herself lean against her staff. The blade scraped on the rough stone ground, and was probably being dulled, but she was too tired to concern herself with that. They still had to get out of the deep roads without dying, seal the tunnels off again so no darkspawn followed them to the surface, and begin the trek back to Kirkwall. That would take two days alone, and then it would another dayโs journey to reach the Sundermount.
She pinched the bridge of her nose, and once again questioned the choices sheโd made that had led her here. Too many regrets. What was it that Ashaโbellanar had told her?
โRegret is something I know well. Take care not cling to it, to hold it so close that it poisons your soul. When the time comes for your regrets, remember me.โ
Ugh. Cheap advice from a dragon, but that was neither here nor there.
The recruits finished their tasks and gathered close again. โLetโs get out of here,โ Corryn told them. She turned on her heel and began the long trek out of the deep roads again. The journey took a few hours, and by the time theyโd reached the surface, the sun had long since set.
Once she was back into the open air, Corryn paused to take a deep breath. There was still the stench of the darkspawn and the deep roads, but it was permeated with the scents of nature and fresh air. She turned, and waited until everyone had exited the deep roads. She was still exhausted, but some of her magic had been recharged, sort of. So she waved her hand and lifted her arms, and with a touch of her magic lifted several large stones, jamming them in the entrance to the deep roads again. It wouldnโt keep the darkspawn out forever, most likely, but it was better than nothing.
โWeโll camp here for the night,โ she told the rest of the group, once sheโd turned to face them again. โTomorrow, weโll begin the trek to the Sundermount.โ
