ยป Erin Lavellan ยซ the deep roads
Raised in the woods as a wandering nomad, relied upon by her clan for food as a hunter, Erin was no stranger to living and working in the wilderness under varying conditions. Rain or shine, snow glistening upon the ground or insects buzzing around her head in the humid summer heat - she'd been through it all. Hunting in difficult weather had become a sort of game for her, learning to use the elements to her advantage to get the upper-hand over her prey. The rain muddied things and washed woodland scents away, leaving the deer none the wiser to her approach. Footsteps hidden by crashing thunder, she would leap through the storm shadows and let her arrows fly, striking the deer like lightning.
But even when she wasn't on the hunt, she loved being in the forest. The quiet hush of leaves swaying in the breeze brought her peace, shielding her from the outside world. In the forest, she could climb up and up and up into its highest branches to survey the land around her. It felt like being on top of the world, like she could reach out and scoop the sky and the sunlight into her hands. She was untouchable.
But this? This was ridiculous.
In the time since she'd left Kirkwall, it had decided to snow and rain and hail all at once. She had expected the entrance to the Deep Roads to be hidden deep in an uncharted forest somewhere, concealed by dense foliage and long-forgotten. But no. Instead, she found herself carefully picking her way down a rocky slope in a downpour, struggling not to lose her footing. The ground beneath her suddenly gave way and she jerked back, her foot loosening a shower of pebbles that bounced away down the hill.
If only she'd met up with the other recruits in time! When the Warden-Commander had found her and extended an invitation to join, he'd pointed her in the direction of the Hanged Man Tavern. Intrigued, she'd agreed to at least come and see what this Warden business was all about, but not before she informed her clan. So she'd returned to a lightly wooded area just outside the city where the aravels were camped to pack up her things and say a few goodbyes to her closest friends and family. She hadn't planned to tell the Keeper.
But of course, things were never that simple.
Her friends were excited for her and encouraged her to go; a few even expressed the desire to come with her. Her parents were less than enthused. And somehow, at some point, the Keeper found out -- it was probably Arlanan, she'd never liked him and he'd always been an ass even though he supposedly had a crush on her -- and before she knew it, the whole clan had converged on her. The Keeper had taken quite some convincing, but finally relented. "If the Wardens are going to be risking their lives to keep Thedas safe from darkspawn," he'd sighed, "then I suppose they could use someone of your talent."
And then, finally, once she'd extracted herself from what was quickly becoming a clan going-away party, she'd returned to the tavern the next morning with her things all ready to go ---
--- And the Wardens were gone.
Relinquishing what was left of her dignity, Erin crouched down and slid the rest of the way to the Deep Roads entrance on her butt. She stood and brushed the dust from her clothing and carefully approached. To her surprise, the ground was littered with broken planks and shards of stone, as though the entrance had once been boarded up. A short distance away, the blackened remains of a campfire smoldered weakly just out of the rain's reach. It looked like the Wardens had already been here, and recently.
Thank the gods, she thought, relief flooding through her. Though they'd gotten a head start, she wasn't as far behind as she'd feared. And besides that, something emanating from within the dark hole seemed to be tugging her forward... something sinister...
Relief replaced by caution, she ventured over the threshold. Her footsteps echoed all around the walls as she advanced down the tunnel. Oddly, she felt more exposed in this dank cave than she had outside in the rain. At that moment, she was fervently grateful she was Dalish, for elves seemed to have better eyesight in the dark than humans. She brushed her damp bangs away from her forehead and removed her bow from her back. She knocked an arrow, just in case, but didn't draw back. Every muscle in her lean body tensed, she made her way forward on high alert.
After an indeterminable amount of time had passed, she began to hear noises up ahead. Whispers. Not quite voices. The black feeling in her chest expanded. Darkspawn? She froze, listening intently. No, it couldn't be. I'm just jumpy. Only full Wardens could sense Darkspawn, and she was as green as a branch in spring. But as she rounded the corner, she couldn't shake the foreboding feeling.
Then, suddenly, several things happened at once:
A flame sparked to life. An otherwordly shriek echoed down the tunnel. And someone screamed.
Reacting instinctively, Erin sprang forward, drawing back and whirling around to assess the situation. The Wardens had assumed fighting stances as a ghoulish creature pounced on one of the recruits. He screamed again, but this time it came out as a howl unlike anything Erin had ever heard before. It chilled her right to the bone.
But the other elf reacted quickly, driving his dagger deep into the darkspawn's chest. It screeched and collapsed on the ground. Emboldened, Erin stepped forward into the light cast by the mage's staff. "See what happens when you leave without me?" she called, trying to draw the darkspawn's attention toward her. She clucked her tongue. "Tsk. How unprofessional." She fired an arrow at the Genlock Archer, but not before it nailed the recruit right above the waist. "Dammit," she hissed, rolling to the side.
I'll have to be better than this if I'm going to be a Warden. "So sorry to crash the party," she taunted. "Hope you don't mind!" She dodged away again, focusing on picking off the darkspawn around the edges while the more experienced members of the group fought at melee range. She'd never had to fight in such close quarters before, and she'd never fought anything so terrifying as darkspawn; her hands were shaking so badly she was missing more shots than hitting them.

โซ โซ THE DEEP ROADS โซ โซ
Lucan Hawke
There were times in oneโs life where you questioned every decision that had ever led up to a particular moment.
This was one of those times.
Lucan froze at the sound of the darkspawn approaching; his blood ran cold at their growling, chattering and their laughing as they raced up the tunnel towards the Wardens. โMakerโs breath,โ he breathed. He stared open-mouthed for what seemed an eternity as Corryn, Daya and Gemma prepared themselves for battle. The mage swung her staff forward to hold in front of her, as a defensive measure, while the other two pulled out their weapons. โPrepare yourselves,โ Corryn warned them. Lucan still didnโt move, frozen to the spot he stood with panic. His heart was beating so hard he thought it would pound right out of his chest, and the sound of his pulse in his ears only made the darkspawn louder, somehow. Corryn shot him a sharp glance, and the look in her eyes managed to snap Lucan out of it. He shook his head and removed his bow from its place over his shoulder. Thankfully he was already wearing the leather glove of sorts that protected his palm and fingers from the snapping of the bowstring. At his waist, pressed against the small of his back, was his quiver of arrows.
He had enough time to think the number of arrows he had was no where near enough, judging by the sound of the mob approaching, before an inhuman howl of panic burst from behind him and startled him into motion. He spun, pulling an arrow free and nocking it onto the string, and in the same movement pulled the string back, ready to fire. He blinked at what he saw โ a darkspawn had dropped from somewhere unseen to tackle Rhys to the ground, but the elf had quickly recovered, grappling with the darkspawn for a moment before he managed to stab the monstrous creature. The darkspawn shrieked and fell back, but Rhys ensured its death with another of his daggers.
Lucan stared openmouthed, but the sound of a bowstring drew his attention. Instinctively he jerked back, turning his body to the side, but Rhys again cried out; an arrow had found its way to his gut. The elf didnโt give much thought to it apparently as he jumped back into the fray. Lucan drew the string back on his bow, sighted and let an arrow fly, and a Hurlock went down with a gurgle. Before he could draw another arrow, things were turned upside downโฆ again.
An arrow flew from behind them, and for a brief instant Lucan had the fleeting thought that theyโd been surrounded. He hadnโt realized darkspawn could be so clever โ they were supposed to be mindless. Soulless. Corryn whirled in the direction of the arrow, magic sparking along her fingers, but she stopped at the sight of another elf.
Lucan raised a brow at that. Well, he certainly had expected someone else to show up โ I mean, who went into the deep roads for fun? It wasnโt his first choice of party location, that was for certain.
โSee what happens when you leave without me?โ the she-elf called, and Lucan studied her a bit closer for a moment. She had a shock of red hair cut short framing her head, and when he saw the tattoos on her face he realized she was yet another Dalish. Heโd never seen so many Dalish in one place, considering they werenโt keen on outsiders, let alone humans. She had a bow as well, and had an arrow readied. โTsk. How unprofessional,โ she chided, before firing the arrow at the archer that had put an arrow in Rhysโ gut. The latter managed to tackle his attacker again and engaged the darkspawn in a flurry of knives.
โSo sorry to crash the party,โ the new elf said, voice haughty and taunting. โHope you donโt mind!โ
โDonโt die,โ Corryn warned to her, Rhys, Gemma, Daya and Lucan, and with that she focused entirely on combat. Darkspawn swarmed in, and she wielded her staff and magic with terrifying accuracy. Fire and ice flashed through the deep roads, searing darkspawn to ash and freezing them where they stood. Others were sent flying from telekinetic blasts, some where knocked aside by Corrynโs staff, slashed to ribbons by the blade attached to the end of it, but more still kept coming.
Lucan tried to keep an eye on his fellow recruits and Grey Wardens, but the battle quickly became to chaotic. When he nearly took a darkspawn arrow to the eye because of his distraction, he let out a curse and focused fully on the fight. He wasnโt particularly interested in dying here. As was often the case, once Lucan set his mind to something, he became utterly focused on it. Everything else faded away save for the twang of his bow as he fired his arrows. Though terror still coursed in his veins, he managed to force the panic away. Lucan was a master archer, and it showed; each shot he fired went right where he intended. Some darkspawn fell with arrows sticking out of their necks, others with an arrow in their chest, others with an arrow through their skull. After a short time, the darkspawn grew too close for Lucan to have enough time to draw his bow properly, so he resorted to wielding the thing like a club. He swung it in an arch, slamming it into a darkspawnโs skull on the forward swing, and jamming it into a darkspawnโs stomach on the backhanded movement. He ducked a sword that swung so close to his head it shaved a bit of his hair away. Lucan slammed his bow into that oneโs throat and drew another arrow, using it like a dagger in one hand while he kept bashing darkspawn with his bow. Once heโd managed to clear those that had grown to close, he went to draw another arrow.
And then he found himself suddenly flat on his back, ears ringing. It felt like heโd been kicked by a horse, and for a moment he struggled to breathe. โEmissary!โ he heard someone shout โ Corryn? โ and as he rolled over, staggering to his feet, he watched as she slew another darkspawn with the bladed end of her staff. He followed her line of gaze to the emissary in question; it was another horrid creature, tall and lanky, lips pulled back over its dagger sharp teeth, fingers as long as daggers. It twirled its hands and went to cast another spell, sending what looked like green fire rushing towards them.
Corryn bit out a curse and thrust her palm forward; the green fire struck a wall and spattered out, but nearly singed Lucan as it did so. With a grunt he got to his feet again, grabbed his bow from where it had fallen, and fired his last arrow at the emissary. The magical darkspawn moved at the last instant, and instead of burying itself in its chest, the arrow slammed into the darkspawnโs shoulder. It roared in anger and turned to Lucan.
Well, sh*t. That wasnโt good. It raised its arms to strike Lucan down. He lifted his bow in a defensive position, readying himself. The emissary snickered at him, and Lucan prepared himself to die.
What he wasnโt prepared for was the giant ass bear that slammed into the emissary, knocking the creature to the ground. The animal bellowed out a roar and reared up, slamming its front paws into the emissaryโs skull. Lucan just stared at it, really, really confused. It was a black bear, as tall as Lucan himself was, and he just watched as the animal galloped forward, straight into the main group of the darkspawn, knocking the monsters over as it went, slashing out with its razor-sharp talons. Lucan looked behind him to see if anyone else was seeing what he was seeing โ honestly, he wouldnโt have been surprised if he was hallucinating the bear; stranger things had happened โ and where Corryn had stood a moment before, she was gone. Her staff had been discarded on the ground. His brow furrowed. And then rose into his hairline.
Corrynโฆ was the bear? How was that even possible? Heโd never even heard of such music. The momentary shock the darkspawn experienced at the sudden appearance of the bear faded, and they began to swarm again. Still, there werenโt many left โ only a dozen or so stragglers. Lucan returned his bow to his shoulder and withdrew his hunting knife, launching back into the fray again.
And as quickly as it had begun, the darkspawn attack was over. Lucan stood still, panting, to survey the end result; darkspawn corpses littered the deep roads before them, piling up in some places. How many had attacked them? he wondered. His body stung in numerous places from several wounds; none of them seemed to be deep, but Maker, did they hurt.
From deeper in the tunnel Corryn appeared, brushing her clothing off. He raised an eyebrow at her, confused. โWhat was that?โ he asked her.
โA darkspawn nest,โ she responded, voice dry.
โThatโs not what I meant,โ he shot back. โYouโreโฆ a bear?โ
Corrynโs following eye-roll was so intense her eyes nearly fell back into her skull. โNo,โ she responded. โItโs magic, and now is not the place to discuss it.โ The white-haired elf strode closer until she stood in front of the sudden newcomer โ the other red-headed elf. She looked as exhausted as the rest of them did. It had been quite the fight.
โTimely intervention,โ Corryn said wryly. โI am Corryn, leader of this little group. Who are you โ and what in the Creatorsโ names are you doing here? Where is your clan, lethallan?โ
โNot that we arenโt grateful for your arrival,โ Lucan added. Corryn glared at him for a moment, before turning back to the new elf.
