Spiderbite flattened his ears. He bit his tongue to keep a sharp reply from escaping his lips. Nettlesting may have lost faith, but Spiderbite knew SkyClan would survive this. Half the clan wouldn't die in another fire. StarClan would watch out for them. Spiderbite had to believe that because he had nothing left.
"There's been enough venomous words today, Nettlesting." Spiderbite finally found his voice. He stepped forward and held his head up. "If you're going to leave, leave. Don't punish us when we suffer together. I pray StarClan goes with you wherever you end up and I hope you find what you're looking for."

Nettlesting looked at Spiderbite again, his eyes still steeled, but his voice far more civil now than when he had spoken to his stricken mother. He mewed. “Thanks. I appreciate it. But I think Starclan will be better off here with you. Not with me.” He turned then, unable to look at his sister. Plumwillow was looking at him with a look of such heartbreak and agony that for a second he felt an urge to stay.
The feeling was gone quickly though, as he reminded himself that Starlingdust and Plumwillow would be fine, with cats who loved them. They didn’t need him there too. He would miss them, but he wouldn’t miss Skyclan. Head lifted and tail high, he slipped out of the camp entrance for the last time.
“Good riddance!” Redspring snarled angrily, though it was clear that her eyes flashed with emotion, upset that Nettlesting would abandon the Clan so easily. Coward!

Twigpaw snorted as he watched Nettlesting leave, "I can't believe he ever tried to teach me anything. He's never been strong enough to be a warrior of Skyclan!" he spat. Not caring who heard him.
Springpaw's hackles were raised, her face distraught as she took in Spiritstar's body. "Warblerwind would NEVER kill her! Never!"
Skyflight was still looking unmoving at Spiritstar's lifeless body, the she-cat in shock. Warblerwind had killed his own mother? There must be something else going on beyond that. She had seen the love that Warblerwind had always held for Spiritstar.
Shadespots leapt off her cliff ledge, padding toward the apprentice's den to look for her kits. She needed to know they were alright.

Spiderbite watched Nettlesting go with a heavy heart. He frowned at Redspring's outburst and the hiss he heard from Splashecho. He tried to offer Plumwillow a sympathetic glance before turning to face Twigpaw, Redspring, and Splashecho. "He's gone. It's done. Let us take care of our dead."

Flyingpaw looked over at her siblings then over at her mother. Twigpaw's attitude bothered her. She knew how much he enjoyed training with Waspstrike and she had no words for Springpaw and her mother was just unsettling these day. She tried to find her father.

Sparrowstrike was standing on the edge of the lower ledges, a deep frown settled into his face as he saw the hatred spewing out of his mate and son. His ears went back when his eyes met Springpaw and her grief for her friend. His eyes continued his scan, settling now on Flyingpaw who looked lost. Jumping off the ledge he padded over to her, "Are you alright Flyingpaw? I know this is a lot to take in." he murmured gently, touching his nose to the top of her head.

Spotting Shadespots moving, Basilpaw sprang up to his paws, rushing after his mother as he called out to her. “Mother! I- I need to tell you something, I couldn’t before, but…” He trailed off, ready to tell her the truth. As morbid as it felt, with Spiritstar gone and Spiderbite assuring him, he didn’t feel afraid to tell his mother anymore.
“Quickwing just said that Warblerwind pushed her!” Wingpaw exclaimed when Springpaw made her strong remark. He looked at her with both guilt and stubbornness. “She’s Basilpaw’s mentor, I know that she wouldn’t lie about that.” He reasoned, even if it hurt him to know that Warblerwind was a killer.
Plumwillow looked miserably at Spiderbite, knowing that this was all going to be awful for the medicine cat. She sniffled, but nodded to his herbs. Her voice was raspy as she mewed. “I’ll help you prepare her and Silvercloud. I owe her that, if only Quickwing and I had left earlier, or gotten there faster…” She trailed off, sighing heavily.

Flyingpaw pressed against her father, trying to hide away from the high emotions of the Clan. "What's going on? I thought...Why is this happening? Father, I'm scared."
Spiderbite flicked his tail over Plumwillow's ear. "Don't be like that. There's no use in 'if onlys' or 'what ifs.' What's done is done. What I am grateful for is that you and Quickwing saw what happened and bright Spiritstar back." He took a deep breath as he looked over the bodies. "Let's move Spiritstar's body to the center of camp with Silvercloud's. We must hold vigil. Perhaps, throughout the night, StarClan will show us the way." He twitched his whiskers in uncertainty. They were without a leader now. What were they going to do?

Mudwasp stared in shock at Spiritstar's body, listening numbly as Quickwing and Plumwillow explained what happened. His fur bristled at the news of Warblerwind's betrayal and Nettlesting's decision to leave, "We're in a Clan full of traitors." He hissed quietly to Echowing, tail lashing behind him in anger.
Frostlight's ears flattened against her head when Spiritstar was brought in, pressing firmly against Withermist's side. Even though she had some notion of what had happened, it was still a very shocking thing to see. "I don't think Warblerwind would do something like this without a very good reason." She murmured to Withermist, looking at her mate with a question in her eyes, "There has to be more to this story."
Hawkpaw was just about to answer Emberpaw when she looked up at the commotion going on at the camp entrance, her ears falling flat again when she saw Quickwing and Plumwillow bringing in Spiritstar's very still form, "She... she's gone?" She whispered, looking at Emberpaw with wide eyes.
Kestrelfrost stiffened in surprise at the sight of the SkyClan leader's dead body, his ears going flat against his head. First Silvercloud, and now Spiritstar?! And with Whitesun missing now too, just what will SkyClan do now?! "There's no one to lead us now! Spiritstar didn't name a deputy before she left the camp earlier!

She and Quickwing were still here, and brought Spiritstar home. She looked back at Quickwing, her love for her evident in her silent gaze, before she moved to help Spiderbite prepare the bodies. Spiderbite had been her close friend for moons now, ever since she used to pester him when they were apprentices together. She sniffled. “I believe in you, and Starclan. I just hope you know that. It’s… it’s going to be hard for you, after this, Spiderbite. Who else are we going to look for for leadership right now?” She admitted suddenly.

Spiderbite faltered, completely caught off guard by what Plumwillow said. Sheer panic resonated through him. "Me?" he repeated in his usual snappy tone. "Why me? There's still Lavendersky. A-and the senior warriors. You're stuffed up with grief and speaking nonsense. I'm not a leader. It's not my destiny to be like Spiritstar."

She hoped if he ever came back, she could end his life herself. She looked at Mudwasp. “Good riddance then, that they’re gone then. But this is going to be one big mess…” “He didn’t kill her.” Withermist shook his head sharply, seeming to realize something. “He wanted to kill what was inside of her… he succeeded, but… failed, then. Both.” He murmured, lifting his muzzle and looking at Frostlight seriously. “He didn’t kill her. He didn’t.” Emberpaw felt frozen in shock and fear, her eyes blazing as she whispered. “She was just… just alive? How could she already be dead?” She crouched low, eyes lowered. “Starclan must have punished her, right? What else could it be? Warblerwind… why did he lie?!” Snapped into realization, Cobrafang called out. “Kestrelfrost is right! Spiritstar never named a temporary deputy. If we don’t get Whitesun back, what does that mean for us?”

Here are some other reactions)
Blackfire scowled, her tail lashing at the thought of Warblerwind betraying his mother like that. Could he really do something like this? She saw the look on her sister's face, but what if Plumwillow had a point? Maybe they misheard or didn't hear everything that had been said.
Firescorch gave a low growl, his eyes still on Spiritstar's body. This must be yet another punishment from StarClan! It had to be! Spiritstar turned her back on StarClan and not even two heartbeats later, she's dead!
Shadowmask watched everything going on with her ears flat against her head, the growing tension between her Clanmates starting to make her nervous. This tension and anger was just how AdderClan first started to grow, she remembered it clearly.
Spotteddawn padded towards the elder's den, wanting to check on her father as well as seek some comfort from him. It was hard to believe that Spiritstar was actually gone! She had been leader since she was a young kit, and now she was gone! "Lichengaze?" She mewed, looking into the den for her father. The queen's belly was only just starting to show signs of her second litter, and she dreaded the thought of bringing them into such uncertain times.
Sundapple looked at both Silvercloud and Spiritstar with grief in her eyes, mourning the losses that SkyClan had suffered today. She shook her head, not wanting to believe that Warblerwind would do such a thing to his own mother. He had always adored her! Why would he do such a thing?
Seedflight wrapped her tail over her young kits, pulling them closer to her belly as she watched from the nursery entrance, "That traitor! How could Warblerwind do this?! To his own mother?!" She hissed, fur bristling in anger.
Rainpaw shrank back as the Clan started yelling and arguing again, her ears flat against her head as she watched. Was Spiritstar really dead? But didn't everyone say that she had nine lives?! How could that have been her last one already?

Without Spiritstar choosing a deputy, and Whitesun missing, Starclan’s all we can hope for to tell us what we can do…” She looked around with worry. “If there’s any faith left in them. It’s going to get bad. Really bad.”

Spiderbite grit his teeth and couldn't look at Plumwillow. He hurried to the bodies of Silvercloud and Spiritstar to work on decorating them with the burial herbs. Herbs in his paws always made him feel better. "Well, if Whitesun is missing then surely we can still find him," his voice was quick, sounding rather flustered. Spiritstar gave up on him, but I'm sure some of us haven't. Maybe some warriors would be willing to go on patrol? We can't abandon him and the others." He glanced at their clanmates, seeing the horror, sorrow, and fear all around. "The Clan needs to be put to work before high emotions take over once again."

"No kidding." Mudwasp growled, glaring down at the panicking Clan. He sighed and shook his head, looking at Echowing again, "Gotta pity the one who has to clean this mess up." He added. Now they had no leader or deputy, no one to truly lead them. Mudwasp doubted that Lavendersky had the energy to do such a thing, and he didn't think Spiderbite had the right experience for it either. "So what? Do we choose a leader ourselves? I doubt StarClan would choose one for us, and if they did, they'll want one who will do what they say." He grunted.
Frostlight touched her nose to Withermist's cheek, "Don't worry, I believe you." She murmured, meeting her eyes with his. "Warblerwind wouldn't kill his own mother. There's more to this story than what we're hearing."
Hawkpaw shook her head slowly, not believing for a second that Warblerwind would do this. "No... no, he wouldn't! He loved his mother, he wouldn't do this." She mewed, remembering the look in his eyes when he had pulled her away from Spiritstar earlier. "I don't believe that he would." Hawkpaw added firmly.

Plumwillow, even though he stated otherwise, quickly latched onto Spiderbite’s words as though being given an order. Now buzzing again with a hint of energy, she nodded quickly, always one to jump the gun a bit fast. She darted towards the center of camp, calling out loudly above the masses.
“Spiderbite says that we should make a search party for Whitesun. Er, well, that’s the most logical path to take. Whitesun’s our deputy, and that’s still got to stand, right?” She called.
“Spiderbite’s a medicine cat, and following Starclan blindly is what got us into all this mess!” Echowing hissed firmly, only to growl lightly as Emberpaw shot up at Hawkpaw’s side. While she had been ready to argue her sister’s deep faith in Warblerwind, she refused to miss the chance to search for their parents. She wrapped her tail around Hawkpaw’s shoulders. “Hawkpaw and I will go! We have to, Jadefeather and Whitesun are our parents, we won’t give up on them!”
“What if Spiritstar was right though? What if going back to Twolegplace will just result in more of us being dead?” Dewcloud called out, her eyes filled with stress and conflict as she turned to look at Plumwillow.
“Who’s going to lead the search, then?” Poppyclaw asked firmly, glancing over at the remaining Senior Warriors, knowing they likely could do it best.

Spiderbite shot his head up when Plumwillow called out to the rest of the Clan. What is she doing?! She's making it sound like I'm giving an order! He shot Echowing a look of annoyance at her StarClan comment, but at least some cats were willing to search. "Look," he flicked his ear as he addressed Dewcloud's concern. "I know it was Spiritstar's last order to not go to the twoleggedplace, but our clanmates are still in there. Whitesun is the rightful successor to Spiritstar. We have to find him. If anyone is willing to take the risk of returning to the twoleggedplace, I ask that you go, but you stay together. No one separates from each other. That's how Silvercloud got killed."

“I swear that’s what I saw.” Quickwing flattened her ears as Slateheart’s aggression. “He attacked and pushed her off.” She spoke, watching the hurt in Slateheart’s eyes.
“He would never. I know my son and he would never attack his mother.” Slateheart snapped back before turning away and moving to lay next to his mate. He slowly started to groom her to dry her fur. “Oh Spiritstar…”
Quickwing watched him go, unable to find the words to comfort him. She pushed forward and looked at Spiderbite. “I’ll let a patrol.” She told him. “I want to find Whitesun.” She couldn’t sit here and not do anything. She needed to act. Her paws itched with restless energy.

Spiderbite blinked gratefully at Quickwing. "Thank you, but whatever you do, don't let your patrol get separated. We can't stand anymore losses." He stole a sorrowed look at Silvercloud and Spiritstar. "May StarClan go with you, Quickwing, and guide you to Whitesun."
Splashecho padded over to Twigpaw and pressed her head against his side like she was comforting him. "I want you to work harder in training tonight," she whispered so only he could hear. "There's too many dangers and StarClan has forsaken us. We have to be able to protect ourselves against anything."

"Yes, I will do whatever the clan needs me to do. Your mother will too." Sparrowstrike promised, hoping he was right about Splashecho. "I know it's hard to see the clan fighting internally like this, but the truth will come out eventually and we'll get it solved."
Twigpaw stood taller, nodding with determination at Splashecho. "Of course mother. My mentor says I have been improving rapidly now that I don't have some weakhearted kittypet teaching me."

Cloudberry's aggressive tone shocked Clovertail for a moment, but she quickly recover. Of course any cat would be sharp, if not boiling on the inside! "I will as well" She vowed, glancing up at the stars. "I will until my last breath" Wouldn't anycat? Would some cats really join the dark forest? Who? "Did living cats really join the Dark Forest? Why?" “They did. Either too hungry for power or too vulnerable and young to realize they were fighting for all the wrong reasons.” Cloudberry admitted solemnly, thinking of the cats in the Clan that supported Robinstar and Adderstar without hesitation. She thought of Leafshade and her sons, the toms dying in the battle with Thunderclan, influenced by their mother’s thirst for power and loyalty to Robinstar. She shook her head with shame. Clovertail could tell that Cloudberry wasn't feeling the best right now, but she didn't comment on it. All of the sudden, cats were excaliming out loud, comments hushed and outspocken. "Spirtstar's dead!" Clovertail jumped to her paws, and she finally saw her. The body of her leader - the only leader she had ever known. "Spirtstar!" Clovertail has mad now, her eyes transfixed on the two cats that had lost their lives this evening. It all happened to fast, and Clovertail hadn't been paying much attention, but now Nettlesting was leaving! Cloudberry was talking about that earlier. Now she seemed to deflate, her tail lowering and her ears flatting on her head. I wonder how Cloudberry must feel. She looked at Cloudberry, but couldn't quite read the expression on the older molly's face.
