I haven't read it since its release, but I remember liking it. However, I hear that it's a common least favorite. I'm curious as to why this book is disliked so much?

The timeline is a little messed up with some events, Yellowfang has an unnecessary power, and most of ShadowClan is unlikable, including Raggedstar. His relationship with Yellowfang came off as verbally and especially emotionally abusive.

adding onto mothflight's good explanation. there was that little trend of thunderclan medicine cats suddenly not wanting to be medicine cats when they were in training. spottedleaf was retconned into not originally wanting to be a medicine cat. then cinderpelt started as a warrior and grew into a medicine cat. then yellowfang was suddenly revealed to have a RANDOM POWER out of NOWHERE that forced her to go from warrior to medicine cat. that in itself was horrible to find out. we knew in the original series she was a warrior first then medicine cat, but we didnt know the reason.
cant remember if leafpool also had this trend happen to her. as far as i remember, she was into helping cinderpelt as a kit and thus always wanted to be one. and then jayfeather continued that trend of also not wanting to be a medicine cat but was forced to become one bc of his blindness.

Too many inconsistencies, Yellowfang's power, and her relationship with Raggedstar was horrible.

I couldn't stand reading about the relationship between Yellowfang and Ruggedbutt. He was emotionally and verbally abusive, and I had to put the book down several times. Foxheart was a jealous hag, and Lizardstripe was a terrible Foster mother to Brokenstar as a kit.

I remember having a hard time reading it because I absolutely hated so many of the characters. By the time brokenstar was full grown it was a terrible grind. Books rarely ever do this to me, but ShadowClan was just so unlikeable. As for all the other reasons everyone else has listed, the timeline was just messy and confusing. It's a given with warriors at this point that there'll be timeline errors, but YS was especially bad.

Retconning Mudfur's great backstory is reason enough to hate it, not to mention its other flaws. Yellowfang felt way too meek, like she's a total pushover in this book.

Foxheart is one of my least favorite characters of all the Warrior Cats, Lizardstripe definitely wasn't a good mom, and Raggedstar for how "noble" the seemed to be portrayed in the first arc turned out to be pretty immature and Tigerheart-like. (who, funnily enough, is his grand-nephew.)
