Yiiiikes. SH certainly did not do her justice, and neither did this short piece. She came off as obsessive, spiteful (the 'disappear like dew part' was just bleagh) and lowkey rude to the reader. They could've done so much better with this character.

I honestly prefer SHA's characterization of Spottedleaf. The books seem like they are trying to make her seem "sweet" when the spite she displays here better aligns with her actions.

You speak of them not doing her justice, but exactly what has she done in the books to deserve justice to begin with? We know nothing about her character in the canon books beyond being an airhead and romantic.

The biggest sin Spottedleaf committed was calling the name Rusty and other names that humans use for their cats “ridiculous” when we have cats named Runningnose, Deadfoot, Crookedjaw, and Brokentail. Forget Spottedleaf; Rusty is a beautiful cat name, and I will never forgive her.

Oh yeah, if you though I hated Spottedleaf before, that short story really nailed the coffin for me no doubt. Petty spiteful obsessive femcel...
If you take account of SH it actually makes her whole character way creepier, the novella only made me feel even more blegh about her as a whole more on that note.

I refuse to accept spottedleafs heart
but in her honest answer atleast she has some character
'I began to seeFirepaw differently'
Why does no one talk about this? this was in the main series and is..super creepy
Honestly this thing gives evil spottedleaf a whole new look, not evil cause she was upset she died too early but just...obsessive

if apprentices are perceived by the fandom as being tweens to older teens, then spottedleaf is like uhhh...? over 20?

@nettles if apprentices are perceived by the fandom as being tweens to older teens, then spottedleaf is like uhhh...? over 20? idk about the rest of the fandom since im not too active in these discussions but for me the way i perceive the ages are: kit: 1-12 apprentice: 12-18/20 warrior/full medicine cat/etc: 20+ average elder: probably somewhere in the ballpark of 70+ to 80+ spottedleaf i personally view as being like, 25+ age wise, at least from how shes written to act. how i perceive a characters age depends heavily on their mentality. so yeah i didnt think about it much as a kid but once i got old enough to rlly formulate my opinions on the way the ranks are written, i found spottedleaf MEGA creepy.

But if it helps to compare her age to other cats somewhat similar to her in age, she was still an apprentice when Bluefur's kits were born, and Mistyfoot and Stonefur were already warriors by the time Willowbreeze became pregnant. So yeah, she was definitely older than how she initially seems.

Thing is I think a lot of people find it creepy, like I most certainly do, especially when you know she admits that she wasn’t happy that Firestar was moving on from her SEASONS after her death even though she stayed supportive of him.
The biggest problem with her character that makes itself apparent in Spottedleaf’s Honest Answer was that the Erins always kept defining her by her “romance” with Firestar even when they were trying to endear her to the audience. She’s always going to be known first and foremost that she is in love with him and has little personality elsewhere. The Erins could have written about anything in an interview with Spottedleaf (for instance, what’s it like being a StarClan warrior? What was it like dying? They tell us about how she stayed in her den for a month after but her thoughts are still of Firepaw and how she wished he died with her) and kept Firestar as a small portion of it instead of making it the sole reason we were talking to her, where even the StarClan cats know that her weird obsession is all there is to her. That’s all she exists as.
Spottedleaf’s Heart didn’t talk about her romance with Firestar for once but what we had instead almost blacklists the book entirely within the fandom. She should have stopped being relevant when TNP rolled around.

and I cant help but wonder if its because spottedleaf is a she cat.
A super creepy character but a character none the less.
Imagine if Spottedleafs Heart was instead a horror adult book about her obsession over this cat?

yeah thats generally my thoughts on it. especially from the way the writers treat it. i feel like if firepaw and spottedleaf switched genders, spottedleaf would be treated as a much more sinister presence in the series. i dont feel like people strongly defend her when its pointed out, but nobody seems to really think about it either, and im not sure if its because shes a she-cat or if its because shes written as though shes young or if its because the narrative doesnt act like its a creepy thing.

They (Especially Tumblr) also use Spotted "being a victim" as an excuse to not hag on her creepiness as if that excuses her literally creeping on a cat barely out of kithood himself. Being a victim or anything doesn't excuse behavior (Starclan forbid behavior as nasty as that), it EXPLAINS it, but even then her creepiness was established before the blasted novella, it's jus now, thanks to how she is in the series itself, it just added more fuel to the fire. And just reminds me of the people that use mental illness to excuse shitty behavior. Whether you account for SH or not, regardless Spottedleaf in the end is still a creep (who if you see SH as canon, was practically continuing a cycle) and people should be allowed to rag on her for that. Even without SH or acknowledging it as canon people should be allowed to rag on it cause even without it is gross, addition to SHA which just adds more to hate her for as an adult. It adds "creepy obsessive stalker who can't get over not having a literal happily married man as HERs and wants his wife gone and probably lied about their relationship being okay the entire time seeing as she's sulking constantly in heaven about him seasons later after she said so" as a trait. Forgive my very vindictive venom btw
