Spoilers for TBC and AWS below: TBH, I didn't like Tree when he was introduced in AVOS. He seemingly appeared out of nowhere and was given a ton of relevance that didn't seem warranted. And his relationship with Violetshine seemed sudden and forced as well.
But that quickly changed in TBC. While I originally didn't like him as Violet's mate, I LOVED him as Rootspring and Needleclaw's dad. He seemed to genuinely care for them in his own way, and he would do anything for them. He plays an instrumental role in making Rootspring more proactive in the plot by encouraging him to help Bramblestar's ghost and meet with the rebels.
And after reading Tree's Roots, I've begun to appreciate his character even more. The novella explained so much of his character, such as why he was so hesitant to join a clan and adjust to clan life originally. After all he'd been through and what he'd lost, he'd become afraid of becoming attached to anyone in fear of losing them again. I realized that he and Violetshine were actually perfect for each other; they'd both been constantly ripped away from people they cared for.
It also explained why he's so quick to doubt clan customs. Growing up with the Sisters, Tree was conditioned to believe that the way they lived was the only way of life, and he lived his life staring out of a keyhole. He was only able to open the door after meeting his father Root, and ever since he's been wary of following the rules blindly. It explains why he's always telling Needleclaw and Rootspring to question clan rules. Although Rootspring would never admit it, Tree and Rootspring are actually a lot alike. Tree started out desperately wanting to be able to see spirits like his Sisters and adapt to their beliefs. He wanted to fit in among them so he wouldn't cast out. Rootspring also wanted to fit in, and in contrast was dismayed when he found out he could see ghosts because it meant he wasn't normal by clan standards. Tree knows that being "normal" isn't always what's important and he doesn't want his kits to go down the same path he once did.
Overall, I think Tree's one of the best characters in modern Warriors, and he's a great mate for Violetshine and a great father to his kits. I also love how both Rootspring and Needleclaw are named after Tree and Violetshine's respective parental figures, I think that's really sweet.
