I've just reread the first arc, and I'm wondering what y'all think.
Firestar has done so much for the clan by the end of the first Arc. He exposed Tigerclaw, which was a big surprise to Dustpelt but I think that's a plus for Firestar in Dustpelt's eyes. There also is clearly a baseline of respect, like when Fireheart tells him he would be too soft on Fernpaw and Dustpelt pretty much nods and is like "yup, you're not wrong." He also y'know, saves the forest in book six. No big deal.
But of course I don't think he really ever forgave Firestar for 'taking' Sandstorm from him--he obviously fancied her and enjoyed making fun of Firestar with Sandpaw even up towards book four and his hostility continues even into book five I think.
They aren't buddies at all, but what do you think? Does he still despise Firestar by the end of the first Arc? Or does he reach more of a begrudging, unhostile respect?

Pretty sure he doesn't despise him or even hold anything against him anymore but rather they were a sort of frienemy dynamic with banter and mutual respect after that. Not exactly friends, but not enemies either, but you can tell they do get along to an extent compared to when Dust was bullying Fire constantly early in.
Also Dust had Fern by that point, so he had no reason to even be angry at Firestar for getting Sandstorm by then anyways.

I agree with Brindlefern. I believe Dustpelt was only jealous for a little while when Fire and Gray became warriors first and then Fire and Sand were getting close, but it wasn't as big a deal.
He moved on when he got with Ferncloud though, and I don't think he's ever been as mean as he used to be since then? Frenemies would be a good way to describe Dust and Fire's friendship.

Lionblaze thinks to himself "The dusky tom often argued with Firestar, but Lionblaze suspected the two warriors relished their disagreements, sparking off each other and never holding grudges."
This basically tells us that while Dustpelt and Firestar were certainly not friends, they at the very least respected one another and Dustpelt was never afraid to argue with something he disagreed with. Firestar also entrusted him to train Squirrelflight, so he does at the least trust him.

No, Dustpelt doesn't despise Firestar. He's had disagreements with Firestar, but hasn't been terrible since TPB.

I think Dustpelt didn't like Firestar when he was a kittypet. But if we were Clan cats, wouldn't we? I think Firestar earned Dustpelt's respect when he drove out Tigerstar from Thunderclan.

He doesn’t despise him, it’s obvious that he’s come to respect him.

With most of the relationships in any of the books the characters are either really good friends, hate each other, or have no real interactions with each other. The thing about Firestar and Dustpelt is that it is one kind of relationship that does not really fall into any of these categories. Their relationship has grown and matured just like the two of them have. If anything I would call Firestar and Dustpelt acquaintances.

There's actually a scene where he's still envious toward Fire, from what I recall, even when Fern was in the picture, over Sandstorm. It always did annoy me that the Erins completely destroyed and erased the DustSand relationship in favor of FireSand. Feels like bad writing.
