"Oh he is, I wouldn't want to go up against him in a real fight. He could sit on me and take me out." She joked, trying to picture Hayflame sitting on top of her, it would certainly be suffocating. She was much smaller than him, he had a large frame while her own was small and slim. She had no clue who she inherited that from, maybe a distant relative she had no clue about. She tried to pay attention to the discussion they were having, listening about his own mother.
"I'm sorry...I'm sure there's a place like Starclan for cats in the city, maybe you two will meet again there." She tried to assure, but she had never heard of cats outside the clans having an afterlife, though it would make sense for them wouldn't it? Even the evil cats of the clan had their own life after this. "As for meeting my own father, I hope I do but it all depends on how I carry myself in this life. If I remain true to the path of a warrior, I will surely meet him. We have a lot of catching up to do." She commented, wondering if he was watching her now. Would he be ashamed of her bringing Rowan or would he be proud of her for having a kind heart? She hoped it was the last part, someone in her family had to have a sweet bone.
"She may have my pelt, but that's okay. She can't exactly kick me out of the clan, that'd be too shameful for her. That and I've never heard of a warrior being sent away for showing land, usually it's something more severe like...killing a cat." She shuddered, recalling the stories she had been given as a kit of cats willing to do anything for a chance at power. Quiet the horror stories to keep a kit in line but they did work and her mother knew them all. After that, she stood up and brought herself to the exit of the den. She had a mission now, to get them food.
"You're fine, just stay put. Might be better this way anyways, don't want you to be ambushed by even more warriors." She teased before taking her leave, she made her way to the warrior's den, pulling her nest free from it's resting place and dragging it towards the spare den. She left it outside then went in pursuit of the Fresh-kill pile, she was stuck choosing a piece of prey when her sister waddled over, belly bigger than the last time Softchirp had seen her. She seemed exhausted, eyes dull as she stuck her nose into the pile and sifted through it. Softchirp kept her silence, not wanting to bother her. The two hadn't spoken in a while, something she neglected to mention to Rowan. She didn't want to involve him in her own sibling problems, he had his own wound to tend to and his life outside the clan to get back to. She was about to snatch a spare sparrow when Sparklight leaned away and finally looked her in the eyes.
"You are the one that brought in the stranger, right?" She asked, she seemed more curious than angry, eyes finally getting a bit of light to them. Softchirp stood awkwardly, wondering how to answer her. It wasn't like it was a big secret, she was the one who brought him but she didn't want to start a fight with the expecting she-cat. Instead, she remained silent until Sparklight spoke once more. "I'd be careful, Softchirp, you know you tend to get yourself in messes you can't fix." She hinted, snagging the rabbit she had caught earlier and taking her own leave. The young warrior was left standing there, ears flat against her head as she tried to forget what she was hinting at. She quickly grabbed the Sparrow and made her way back, gripping her nest with her spare paw and flinging it inside. She entered right after, dropping the sparrow quickly when she realized she had flung it too far and right onto Rowan.

Rowan was unable to hold back a comedic snort as she conjured the image of the warrior sitting on her, shaking his head with a smile plastered on his lips. "I can imagine few worse fates," He chuckled, smiling at her as he she spoke, focusing in on her glowing eyes while she thought to herself. Why do you look so strong when you're focused like that? His whiskers twitched, and he blinked and snapped at himself internally. Why by the ancestors are you asking yourself that?!
Rowan had to refocus himself as she suggested that, maybe, there was another place that might have his family. As great as it would be to see my parents again, they probably wouldn't even remember me. He had to imagine it was true, even though such a thought was pretty depressing. "It would be nice." He responded quietly.
He listened intently and shifted on his side as she gave him the quick version of how a warrior made their way into StarClan. "What do you mean by that? What is the 'path' of a warrior, exactly?" He asked, genuine curiosity in his mew as he wondered how a cat 'won' their way into this 'StarClan.' It was so, so different from the grounded, anxious concerns of his day to day life that such a focus seemed weird to him, but he still wanted to hear about it.
"You just send a cat away if they kill one of yours?" He meowed incredulously. He couldn't imagine someone killing another cat in his group and getting off that easy. What if they returned to get revenge and do more harm? It seemed like a foolish thing to do.
Rowan stayed put as she ordered, flicking her side with his tail as she teased him, settling his head down on his paws as she exited the den and thinking about all that they had talked about--a lot, really, for such a short time.
When he heard the return of Softchirp, he opened his mouth to speak. "I mean, if yo-" Then, something was projected straight for him and he couldn't react fast enough with his injured side. Thumping down halfway on his head and pelt, the tom-cat let out a mortified mrrow? and tried to blindly push the thing off of him.

She was quick to remove the moss from him, landing it beside his resting spot. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to!" She quickly explained brushing off bits and pieces off his fur before settling down in her nest finally, it was sat rather close to his but she didn't mind this. It wasn't like the two of them would be able to carry on conversing like they were with her half way across the den. "Oh,oh, the sparrow, here!" She brought herself back up and dragged it in front of him, puffing her chest out. "You can have the first taste, I have these every so often but it's one of my personal favorites for birds." As she waited for him to dig into the prey, she curled her tail over her paws.
"As for what you asked earlier, the path of a warrior is a simple one. We follow a set of rules given to us as soon as we were born. They are pretty self explanatory, like rejecting the life of a kittypet and things like that. And we do send away cats who bring us harm, there's no use to them there and no honorable warriors kill so we tend to refrain from that kind of punishment." She was rambling a lot, a little frazzled from her earlier flinging of her nest onto him. She curled her tail back around herself, letting herself get comfortable in the nest. She brought herself close to him once more, their fur brushing ever so slightly. She didn't think how this might be strange for Rowan, to her this was just like sharing a meal with another clanmate of hers. They always sat close, even shared tongues most evenings as they discussed their days together. "So, who's this cat you were close to? Were you mates?" She asked nonchalantly, taking a bit of the prey after he did so.

Rowan stared as she pulled the moss nest off of him, looking up at her, bewildered as he wondered how that was able to happen. He turned from bewildered to embarrassed again as she brushed bits of the moss off of his fur, but he didn't mind and didn't protest, nor did he protest when she placed her nest so closely to his. Though, he did wonder why she had felt embarrassed to be leaned in close to him if she was now settling herself right beside him.
He smiled up at her as she pivoted to the prey and brought it to him, looking mighty pleased to have done so as well. He inclined his head downwards and murmured a Thank you," showing his gratitude for her for carrying so well for him. Then, he leaned down and took a bite of the sparrow, spitting a feather off to the side as he did so.
"Mmph," He mumbled through his mouthful, chewing it delicately and slowly. After a couple seconds, he started nodding his head approvingly. "Thash no rat," He spoke through his mouthful, enjoying the much greater quality of this treat than what he was used to. Were all of the clan's options this tasty? They could be half this good and still be better than a rat.
He finished his bite, leaving it for her to take a turn after she finished speaking. For the moment, he listened to her laying out the fundamentals of what the path of the warrior was, nodding at the sensible example she gave about kittypets--of course the warriors would, there was a reason they weren't kittypets. But he tilted his head in interest as she explained that no honorable warrior would kill another. It was a very strange rule for him to hear.
On the one paw, he lived in a place where that wasn't possible. It was kill or be killed if you were in a bad situation--few cats would send an intruder running with their tail between their legs. To hear not killing was one of these rules...it seemed rather foreign to him. Then again, they lived in a very different world than he did. Maybe they could get by okay without killing--it just seemed unlikely to him.
He listened as she nonchalantly brought up how he mentioned Ebony, and his cheeks went red hot when she candidly asked if they were mates. He had never heard a cat ask that with such relaxation, and he had to assure himself it was just a clan cat thing, such candidness. "N-no!!" He stammered, his head rising from his paws and his gaze falling down to them. "I-I mean...We weren't...w-well, it's...uhh..." He struggled as he felt very put on the spot, and uncomfortable with how normal she made it sound to just ask someone about their mating status. "I guess you could say..." He cleared his throat before speaking, recollecting himself so he could respond with more than a couple words at a time. "...she had lots of tom-cats, and some she-cats lining up to do whatever she wanted, but when she met me, it was shortly after my brother had died, and she..." He cast his glance out of the den, towards a distant point outside that he couldn't see. "I wasn't doing well, and she was there. She made me smile, and kept me going." He looked back at Softchirp, trying to cheer up from his distant gaze and sadly sappy words. "And so I ended up being the tom-cat who did whatever she wanted," He joked with a smile on his face, though it wasn't exactly a joke. "Maybe that is a mate, I don't know, but we're just...close." It felt very strange talking this at length with a near-stranger about Ebony, and he knew in the back of his mind that he had to be careful to omit certain truths about her and how she was related to him being here, but she had been really honest and vulnerable with him from the start, and not only was his mission to get information, but he also appreciated it and wanted to reciprocate the opportunity to be vulnerable to someone who he didn't believe was going to use it against him.
He finished his long-winded explanation of who Ebony was to him, still feeling a bit of a question mark in his own head. Of course, he had left out the part about...Well, that Ebony sometimes felt so distant and unattached, leaving Rowan aching for her and wondering what he had done wrong; and then in other moments she'd get so close to him again like there hadn't been anything wrong. He still didn't understand it, but he didn't want to speak ill of her in front of this clan cat.
His mind shifted back to thinking about the rules she was talking about, eager to get off of the subject of Ebony. He wondered what the rest of these rules were, and put it in the back of his mind to ask her when there was a good moment for it in their conversation. And then on the other paw... "I have to say, it didn't look like the other cats with you were very intent on following the 'no killing' rule. Or Quailpad, for that matter. It didn't look like they would have shed any tears over letting me bleed out." He shrugged glancing away for a moment, but then back to her as she scooted in close to him and made him acutely aware of how warm her fur was, especially in the light draft that was coming through the semi-standing den's patchwork. The question put her a bit on the spot to answer for her clanmates, which might not have been very fair, but right now he was staring at the cat who was closer than he would normally let a friend. It's...their rules...I guess... He thought to himself as his felt his ear tips getting a bit hot.

Her ears perked up as he spoke, listening to him explain his relationship with her. It seemed rather...confusing to her. She didn't understand where they stood even now, they sounded like mates but there was a power play involved in the relationship she hadn't heard of before. Usually mates were equal in her clan, not one doing the bidding of the other constantly. Without thinking, she spoke her thoughts aloud. "I don't know how healthy that sounds if I'm honest. Does she do things for you? I know she was there after your brother died but if I'm honest it sounds more like she used your pain to get what she wanted, which was a tom who would listen to her without question. I know this sounds maybe far fetched on my end but I don't believe any mates in my clan have that kind of dynamic." She paused, looking down at the sparrow before quickly looking back at him. "Then again, I could be completely wrong. Seems that maybe mates are a bit different in your walk of life." She gave a nervous laugh, looking away once more. She just had to babble on, it wasn't her place to give him advice or judge his relationship with this she-cat but it felt wrong to her. If a tom chose her out of every cat just because she was willing to do his bidding she wouldn't feel very comfortable in his presence or of their relationship. She would want a tom who would help her just as much as she did them, the two of them working together to be better. She didn't want to feel walked over or even doing the walking over. When he changed the subject back to the no-killing rule she gave a small mrrow of laughter.
"You have a point but I think some warriors interpret the code in their own ways to justify their feelings. As for my fellow clanmates, they might see it as meaning not doing the killing with their own bare paws. So, technically, they were fine with letting you bleed out. If you're worried about them killing you though, I promise they wouldn't. They're all hiss no claw." She realized she just made her clan seem weak to an outsider and she quickly changed her tone. "Not to say they wouldn't severely harm a cat who threatened our lives, we would. But as of right now, you seem to be fairly harmless so I doubt they would go out of their way to bring actual pain to you." She stopped once more, she was just digging a deeper hole for herself right now. She need yet another subject change but what? The words of her sister rang ever so clearly in her head and she felt the need to discuss it with an outside point of view. It was kind of difficult to discuss though without it seeming like she was trying to seek advice for her own problems. She mulled it over in her head for a few moments before finally coming up with a solution.
"So, uh, not to seem weird but can I pick for more of your past? You see, I'm just so curious." Very good, totally not fibbing and having it be obvious. Why did she have to be so transparent? "Have you ever made a really big mistake? Like one that could be life changing for yourself?" She tried to keep her voice at a level of curiousity, which was a bit easy, she was curious to know if someone had suffered the same paws of fate as her.

Rowan was shifting through a range of emotions as she proceeded to talk through the various legs of their conversation. To start with, he didn't react he didn't react well to the way she analyzed his relationship with Ebony. He immediately felt defensive of her, mainly grabbing the takeaway that Softchirp thought Ebony was just a manipulator who just used him to get whatever she wanted. No, Ebony definitely loves me!
And who are you to decide who she is without even meeting her?! He thought indignantly, likely unable to hide a scowl from his face as the perspective on Ebony had taken him aback and left him flustered. He turned away from her, shifting slightly in the nest he rested in, ending up back on his stomach instead of his uninjured side and generally looking more tense.
His gaze left her and traveled to the outside of the den, his ears flicking as she backed away from what she said rather half-heartedly. He didn't like what she had said at all, and he was burning to defend Ebony, but he knew his task here needed to be more important, and as much as it peeved him to admit it, if he snapped back in defense of Ebony he might turn away the only cat who had shown him real kindness in this clan.
Not looking back at her, he pulled in a quiet breath and exhaled it slowly, trying to calm his slightly risen fur, as she shifted the conversation away from the topic after laughing nervously. Maybe he was being far too easy to read and she realized just how much he disliked what she had said. Still, he didn't say anything in response, letting her push the topic away from Ebony. I better not bring her up again. I guess that was a mistake. At the time, it seemed like being fully open, at least about the existence of Ebony, was a good way to show he wasn't just getting by alone with scraps of rat, something that might have seemed unrealistic to a discerning cat, but it had clearly backfired on him.
"Ahh," Rowan breathed with interest, his gaze returning about halfway to a point between the outside of the spare den and Softchirp. So, these cats were a little less bound to these rules than it seemed at first. They see the rules how they want to, just like any of us. That was useful to know, and certainty settled a bit of worry, in the back o his mind that he didn't want to entertain, that the clan life had some sort of moral high ground.
A small smile made its way onto his face as she quickly added a note which made his ears twitch, her words really not a threat towards him but clearly an attempt to get back the sound of being a fierce bunch of cats. "Well, I better remember that then," He mewed quietly, half with humor and half noting her eagerness to seem like their clan was tough. I suppose I will need to really see these cats in battle to know how they are.
He was unprepared for the abruptness of how she adjusted the conversation next, picking up and how awkward she spoke as she tried to adjust the conversation anew. You're just so curious? Hmm... She was trying to sell it pretty hard, and he started to consider that perhaps he wasn't the only one playing at something. Is she digging for something too? Did her...did Gingerstar put her up to this? I don't know how she could of... He didn't see where the leader would have had time to put Softchirp up to this. No, perhaps they just operate on suspicion by default. The other cats certainly did; maybe she's just better at hiding it...most of the time.
Now, Rowan was less eager to divulge intimate details of his own life, but he tried to keep that fact guarded as he finally returned his gaze to looking directly at her as she asked him for any life-changing error he had made. Well, there's getting my brother killed, He thought rather callously, but left it unsaid, both to keep it closer to his pelt and to avoid the possible way she would take it. He didn't want to hear from another cat that he 'couldn't have done anything to stop it' when he had queued them to go exploring and he had been the one who wouldn't be chased out. His pride had gotten his brother killed and no one would convince him otherwise.
Leaving that unsaid, he struggled to think of anything he could safely give her. Being more guarded now, he defaulted to humor to deflect any deeper searches. "Nothing extra life-altering comes to mind, but I've made plenty of mistakes if you want to hear about those. For one, this one time, I was clumsy and got my pelt clawed up by a...kittypet-" He used her word for the house cats, which he had heard once or twice before but which still felt unfamiliar. "-and this once cat had to heroically fight off three other cats there and another cat named Quailpad in order to help me. Isn't that a really silly name?" He grinned at his own joke, liking to think that wherever he was, Quailpad's ear was itching or he was tripping over a rock.

She could feel how uncomfortable he was becoming and looked down, she knew she spoke out of turn but it wasn't unlike her to try and speak up about things she didn't agree with. It had ruffled lots of fur in the clan before, she had been working on it and keeping her mouth shut but she still had trouble sometimes with it. She suddenly felt coldness wash over her pelt, as though she had jumped into cold waters after snoozing in the sun all day. Why did she feel this way? Everyone gave her the cold shoulder every now and then but when he did she felt different, it affected more than she thought it would.
When he let the subject change and began to talk about his own mistake, she felt a bit better. They were still talking, good. She could maybe fix this but he seemed to be hiding more than he let on. Had he made some other choices in his life besides such a small one? She tried to give a laugh but it didn't come out, just her mouth opened. She didn't want that answer at all, it was more of a light take on what she asked. He must be hiding from me now, right? Surely that's not the biggest problem he has. Maybe...She decided to just be forthcoming on why she actually asked her question, hoping it would let him relax and be like he once was.
"Well, that does sound quiet the event. I'm glad your hero was there though." She teased for a moment before looking outside the den. She knew this would help her case but she hadn't discussed it past her own punishment with Gingerstar the day of. "But I meant something a bit more extreme if I'm honest. You see, I've made some big mistakes before." She turned her head to the side, still not looking back to Rowan. Her mother's harsh words rang so clearly in her ears, it was if it had only just happened. "I mean...I once..." She was struggling to get the words out, if she had just taken a bite she would have thought she was choking by the ball forming in her throat. Her voice grew solemn as she continued on. "We had another fox problem recently, I went to investigate on my own because I didn't understand why the clan wasn't doing anything especially since Sandhawk had passed away from them." She never told him her father's name but she was sure he could piece it together himself to understand who he was and why it mattered so much to her. "I didn't know it at the time, but Adderskip had seen sneaking out and followed because he was worried." Pain pierced her heart as she recalled the russet colored tom, his memory was forever seared inside her head. "Things went so wrong..The foxes outnumbered me so much and they were everywhere. I wouldn't have made it out alive if it wasn't for him." The sounds of growling filled her ears, the area around her changed from the safety of the den into the snapping of teeth in front of her, trying to clamp down onto her fur. She shook her head, the images fading from in front of her as soon as they came. "He pushed me out of the way of one of them, it was reaching for my face with it's teeth. He misjudged his steps though and when he did that, they landed a bite to his neck. There was no saving him, I was such a coward I ran. I didn't stop running until I was in the camp, even then I was so scared from it all it took what felt like hours for me to explain what had just went done." The worry on her clanmate's face was also clear in her mind, fretting over her while she believed Adderskip was laying there, dying on his own.
"We managed to recover his body and drive the foxes back but I got punished for it. I was watched like a hawk, much like you are right now. They also wouldn't let me out of the camp walls, I couldn't leave until recently. Of course, I was the last to eat and I was treated like an outsider for moons until finally it seemed cats were warming up to me again." She remember the first time a warrior brought her a piece of prey to share between them, the two eating in silence. It was such a small gesture to any other cat but to her it meant the world. The next day, cats were speaking to her again and treating her like one of them. She had felt so down during that time, on the verge of leaving the clan forever. She got put back on patrols slowly, the tension between them fading away. Of course, her and Sparklight never recovered though. Sparklight originally had a crush on Adderskip before she became mates with Bravethorn, it took the worse toll on her since Adderskip's own family had passed away long ago. His memory wouldn't even live on in the kits of a littermate or his own. She shifted in the nest, tucking her paws underneath her and wrapping her tail neatly over her side. She felt cold once more, eyes wandering outside as she forced a wail of sadness back down. She was able to recover from that night, make her relationship with the clan better but Adderskip had no chance.
{I hope her backstory is okay ^^;; think it'd help her be pushed towards leaving the clan when alienated because she had been before.}

(Yeah it's great, really sad x.x poor softchirp just wanted to protect the territory in spirit of her dad :c
and oops i didn't notice that either it's fine no one will ever know)
Rowan had a slight smile on his face until she elegantly danced around his dodge like it was a mouse who had landed in her paws. Blinking at her, he could tell she was taking the step first towards sharing what she was asking him for, and he prepared himself as he could see her growing more uncomfortable than he had already made her.
Rowan listened to the depth of the story, focused on her as she explained the situation that she wound up in, and the consequences she hadn't meant to put into action. He hadn't been ready for the intensity of the situation, how close to death she had been and the utterly haunted look that seemed to overtake her expression as she described Adderskip's role in the whole thing.
He figured rather quickly Sandhawk was her father, given that it was unlikely another cat had passed from foxes as well--although, this story put that thought to shame. And this time, Rowan could see the guilt at her involvement in the whole thing. It left him a bit speechless, but thankfully she kept speaking, explaining how it impacted her life in the clan.
He felt really bad for her. He saw how the clan could blame her and put the fault at her paws, because she was the reason Adderskip had followed her, but she didn't want to be followed. She was trying to serve her clan well. As she explained how outcasted she was for so long, he couldn't stop some of the newly-found coldness towards her from warming up in sympathy. Maybe she's playing me. Probably is. He thought to himself, but all of the impacts were visibly there--the way none of the cats smiled at Softchirp--the way her brother had warned her she'd be getting in trouble "again" for helping Rowan...
"That is horrible," He murmured quietly, gazing towards her and analyzing the pain in her face and trying to decide on the right words. He could tell her that he couldn't imagine how it felt for something like that to go so wrong, but he would be lying. "He sacrificed himself for you," He sighed quietly. "And now you carry his memory forever. And your clanmates...they blame you?" The way his voice dripped with confidence as he spoke of the memory of the dead warrior rang of experience, and it might have been a logical conclusion that he was thinking of his brother as he said it. It already seemed pretty clear what the answer was, but he asked nonetheless. "That's awful. I'm really sorry." His voice dripped with sympathy again, the hesitance and distance he had displayed gone for just a few moments.
Then they seemed to reappear. "Why did you tell me this?" He breathed out through his nose, watching her intently as he wondered why she would share such a personal and painful memory and mistake with a stranger. The sparrow still lay between their paws, but he had forgotten it as her story had gripped him in its claws. "I'm not saying I feel the same way they do about it, but it sounds like you have a lot to patch up with some of these cats."

She wondered to herself the same thing, why did she feel so comfortable around this stranger to tell him? The question ran through her mind for several moments. She knew why it was on her mind today, her sister had brought it up without actually saying it when she got the prey. She finally let a low breath escape her mouth as she came up with the answer. "I feel like I may have told you because I feel comfortable enough to do so. It sounds silly but I haven't spoken with a cat like I did you in this short time in a long while." She feel anxiety ripple through her pelt.
"I know I have a lot to patch up with them, I've been trying to make things right but it's hard to do so. I'm at fault for the death of a warrior, whether on purpose or not doesn't matter. I've mentioned it several times before, I'm not a great warrior. If it was me who died in that fight instead of Adderskip I'm sure the clan would have forgiven him by now. They lost a great warrior and kept the one who doesn't even know how to wake up on time." She gave a bitter laugh at that, shaking her head. She felt the guilt gripping at her heart like a hawk at a mouse it just caught. It brought a great deal of shame to her, the clan may be suffering at the loss of him but she lived with the last memory burned into her mind. His cries filled her ears every time the sun fell back in the sky.
"Another reason I brought it up, I feel I should mention, is my relationship with Sparklight still hasn't recovered. When I got the prey for us, she told me to be careful because I tend to get into messes I can't fix myself." Her ears went flat against her head as she recalled the words in her mind. She knew Sparklight was still upset, how couldn't she be? It wasn't just any warrior who had caused the indirect death of her crush, it was her own sister. Someone she slept beside in the apprentice's den and nursery. A cat she had trusted to make the right choices, who knew of her crush and encouraged it. The only cat who treated her like completely normal was her brother, she didn't understand why but she was grateful for him. It felt like the others were just waiting for her to mess up again, biding their time until things went wrong once more.
"It's weird though, I know she loved him deeply and misses him more than any other cat but it feels a lot of the time I'm the only who was truly scarred by it. The cats may be wary of me now but each time I close my eyes or lay to rest his memory comes alive. Even if it's not one of the attack his image is ingrained in my mind till the day I die it feels." She turned to Rowan, eyes blinking anyway any sadness that plagued them. "I'm going to be the best warrior I can, I'm trying to. I just need to get over the nightmares before that happens and my own fear of danger."

"I think I understand," He murmured quietly, inhaling a deep breath and releasing it in a heavy sigh. Her words felt honest, and even if he felt he was being played, Rowan was feeling really sorry for the she-cat. The context of how she got to feeling the way she was was, honestly, heart-wrenching, and hearing her beat herself up again and again as she explained why she talked to him about this made it tough for him to keep his typical cover.
"Some outside ears can listen in a different way," He quietly murmured, meeting her eyes. The two reasons she brought it up to him spoke to similar things--she was feeling isolated in her own family, and maybe it was making her a little desperate for connection, of any sort. It's almost like they're torturing her. I wonder if they understand how it is affecting her. I wonder...if they care. His thoughts didn't put much faith into the other warriors, given what Softchirp was telling him. It sounded like they had condemned Softchirp for the most part and didn't have a lot of forgiveness in their hearts.
A part of his mind reminded himself that she was desperate for connection, and how perfect it was for the mission he was here for. He knew his leader would be encouraging him to talk her up to make her feel better and and to slowly turn her against her unforgiving clanmates. But as guilt at the thought gnawed at him on the inside, he pushed the idea to the back of his mind and chose to go with what felt right to him. He could do all that work a bit later.
In a movement strange even for him, he reclaimed some of the distance he had scooted when he took poorly to her comments about Ebony. With a quiet sigh, he reached a paw forward and gently contacted the end of her tail with it, in absence of her paws which were tucked underneath her. "I don't know if they ever stop, Softchirp," He quietly mewed, gazing into her eyes=, speaking from his own experience. "You just have to remember him well, and do you best to be the best you, especially to Sparklight."
Of course, he had to take note of what Sparklight had said. The other she-cat must have meant that somehow, Rowan might end up getting her into some type of mess. He'd have to be careful about speaking around Softchirp's sister if he wanted to get the cats here at least somewhat comfortable with him. Still gazing into the warrior's eyes, he sighed quietly. He had hinted at knowing something similar to what Softchirp was describing, and now he was probably going to owe her an answer. Great job, rat-brain. He would have hissed at himself if she wasn't there.

His words brought only empty comfort to her, she took his 'I understand' as a way of trying to show some sympathy to her but she didn't want that. She just wanted to forget it all, some night she would stay up the whole time, wondering if the clan would be better if she had run away a long time ago. She unfurled her tail and looked back at him, meeting his gaze finally after staring away so long. She was sure the pain was evident on her face, she willed it away but it remained clear as day.
"I try, to remember him at least. It's not hard to do that. Being my best self though, what is the best version of me? I don't even know that. The best version of myself seems to be lacking the real materials to be a clan cat sometimes if I'm honest. I couldn't imagine myself leaving though, I love my clan deeply and I'd die for them." Her voice choked at the end, the irony of her statement wasn't lost on her. She knew very well that she had that chance and she had run away like a coward into the night. She promised herself to never do that again though, the clan was her top priority now even if it wasn't as clear to the others around her.
"I'm sorry for even mentioning it to you, it's not like you can fix the issue, only I can. I just needed to get it off my chest, it helps a lot to talk about it. The rest of the clan won't discuss it with me unless it's in passive aggressive conversation that is only one sided." She sighed, feeling the rise and fall of her own chest. "I hope you have someone you can talk to in the city, it's very lonely to keep feelings bottled up like this."

Rowan awkwardly pulled his paw back as she unfurled her tail, feeling the dynamic shift the other way as she wasn't incredibly receptive at his attempt to give her some comfort, a little bit of catharsis. He looked down at his paws, absently digging his claws into the ground underpaw and then pulling them back out, repeating this action a few times as she was honest about not feeling there was much in her that matched the standards of her clan.
He wasn't experienced with this particular feeling of failure, of failing a group that one was committed to. He only felt like he had mortally failed one cat, but she seemed to be tortured by the scorn of her entire clan. "Well, I don't know you very well. So I won't pretend like I do and tell you that what you think is wrong," He gave a shrug, still looking down at his paws.
He was silent for longer than he meant to be, losing the best thing to say. He simply felt the way he was powerless to help how she was feeling, and words just felt...pointless. This was putting him in a similar place to his home, where so much danger was around him yet he could never really know where it was coming from. He just...had to push through it.
The danger for her, though, wasn't a threat of death. It was the unending scorn of her clan. Sure, death was final, but he could see this was plaguing her every day. The pain on her face was impossible to miss.
If you don't even feel like these cats want to listen to you, why have you stayed? You must be the most loyal cat alive if you still love them so much. He looked up at her as words of comfort still didn't come to him and she spoke of her utter love for the clan. "You're a special cat, Softchirp. The clan, well...they're lucky to have you." His words were quiet, and he tried not to let his envy for a cat with that quality of character slip into his voice.

A sudden warmth enveloped her and without thinking she placed her nose to his cheek, burying it into his fur. "Thank you for that, Rowan. You don't know how much that means to me." She didn't move away as quickly as she probably should, instead lost in the moment of feeling valuable for once. She never in her life had considered her as such and even if it was coming from an outsider it meant something to her. After several moments, she finally did pull away but not in a quick embarrassed way, more as in the moment had passed and she didn't want to linger longer than she was welcomed. She brought her paws out from under her and stretched them out, the pain leaving her finally for the time being.
"I will work to be better, show the other cats I am worth it. I don't want to bring shame to my family's lineage anymore." She gave him a small purr, pushing the sparrow back towards him so he could eat. It had been a long day and even with all the emotions surging through both of them, they had to eat or else they would certainly be useless the next day. Of course, I guess that doesn't matter right now does it? I won't be allowed on patrols until Rowan is healed and long gone. He won't be leaving this den unless it's to make dirt, we are both trapped here until the foreseeable future.

The rogue was initially bewildered by her reaction, hot off the discomfort of feeling like there was nothing he could say that she wanted to hear, but as she pressed her nose into his fur, his ear tips went warm, his fur warming as she clearly appreciated what he had said this time.
He was plenty embarrassed by the time she pulled away, and it was better that she spoke so that he didn't try to respond right away and leave himself stammering to respond to her appreciation. He tried to gather his composure, sticking it in the back of his mind that these cats liked closeness and contact way more than he was used to, and let a smile replace the slightly bewildered expression that must have lingered on his face.
"You're welcome," He quietly murmured after Softchirp finished speaking, swooping down upon the sparrow and taking another bite of the quality prey as he thought particularly about the second thing she said. Bringing shame to one's family wasn't something he had ever thought about before--he didn't even have memory of those days--but it seemed quite important to her, and it left him wondering how she handled that burden when she also felt that Sparklight, and other cats, didn't even want to give her the time of day to make up for her mistakes.
In a way, it seemed like an incredibly outmatched battle she was fighting, and he wondered how in the misty breath of the ancestors she was going to win it. Softchirp hadn't given him the best image of her relationship with her family, and he didn't envy her the burden she felt to do right by them, even if he didn't have experience with or completely understand that feeling of loyalty.
"Yeah. Yeah you will," He quietly murmured, nodding slightly as his gaze fixed on her. "Although, I suppose I've made that harder, now, haven't I? I guess I have to do whatever I can to make it up to you." A slow grin spread across his face, and he lowered his head down towards the sparrow. "I'm so sorry for being a burden," The wide smile quickly disappeared, replaced with an anxious sad face, accompanied by a playful, mock sorrow. "However can I repay you, brave hero?" He tried to place a drop of mock awe in his voice as he gazed up at her...though it wasn't hard to do, as it wasn't precisely a mock feeling--not exactly awe either. He couldn't get his paw on top of it, but most of what she had said and done since they had met left him with an appreciation of her, maybe a respect even, in the early stages of them knowing each other.

She touched her tail to his side quickly, in a playful manner. "The best you can do is get to feeling better soon. Besides that, not much else, the clan will move on from this and soon the memory of you existing in our walls will be long gone from their minds. Not to make you feel insignificant, but the clan life moves quickly and waits for no one." She mused, remembering how life never seemed to stop for them despite the troubles they faced in their day to day life.
She felt the need for a quick subject change, trying to not put the tom even more down. "So, after all of this is said and done, do you think you will return back to the city life? Or maybe explore a bit on your own? I mean you have personal ties to the city through that she-cat of course but the world is yours to explore it seems. I'd love to go see the sights beyond our border but as you know, once tied to a clan the bond is hard to sever." She tried to think of a better way to put it, she had been saying it this whole time but it still seemed like something hard to describe to a cat who didn't live the way she did. "Like once you cross the border as a warrior, it's like a tugging on your heart and paws to return home. I'm not sure if you experience that but that might be a good thing as I said." She gave a small laugh as she took a small bite of the sparrow herself, realizing how silly it was that she hadn't seen so much.

Rowan's ears twitched as the she-cat basically told him he would be forgotten after being sent off. He wasn't expecting that bluntness from her, but he took it well, not having really expected the clan to be wistfully pondering his possible return three moons into the future.
Then again, he was going to be returning. He certainly was going to be brought along for whatever strategic knowledge he gained of this place, and it hit him hard for a moment that when that day came, Softchirp would...They were going to have to...
The tom-cat failed to keep his disappointment off of his face as he glanced away while she was in the middle of asking him what he would be doing after he left. Okay, I barely even know her. I shouldn't feel bad about this. She is just...an enemy, and I bet even she would bend her Code to kill me if she knew what I was doing here. He forced himself to rationalize this, pulling himself away from guilt as much as he could by reminding himself that they were acquaintances for the course of minutes. Still, he'd be lying through his teeth no matter what way he responded here.
Of course, ideally, he was going to be able to find a way to extend his stay beyond just a few days--that was hardly time to get a few more cats' ears and learn more of the clan's way of life and how they guarded the camp. It was beyond him at the moment how he was going to make sure that happened.
The truth was that he didn't exactly have anything that made him love the group he was a part of. He couldn't say any of this to Softchirp, but since the death of his brother he was almost held in its claws--penance, for trespassing they said. A cat's life wasn't enough. No, it wasn't that he loved the group at all. He was in their service and he couldn't leave, as much as he wanted to. He was certain they would track him down. But he couldn't forget what he was promised--get this mission done, help secure the camp...and his life was his to do with as he pleased. Stay. Leave.
So how badly was he going to lie to her? "Oh, I'm sure I'll go back to the city. As much as I'd love to explore some place like the territory you have here, I'm sure I couldn't make it all alone in the unknown expanses. Who knows what sort of dogs or other creatures I would run into? As much as the stench of that place makes me want to retch sometimes, I don't know what I'd do out on my own, out...there." It was truthful in that he wouldn't be testing his fate, going out alone to ancestors-knows-where. He chose not to bring Ebony back into the discussion. "I don't think I could ever catch something like a sparrow, anyways. Rats are easy because the monsters mask your approach pretty well."
(That's alright, just let me know if there's anything i can do in the thread or if you need a break or something i don't want to be stressing you out ;.; )

"But you wouldn't be alone right, you have that she-cat waiting for you. She and you could go exploring away from the city." She hated bringing up this mysterious she-cat in his life, it felt like a sore subject, but she felt it was necessary right now considering his one objection was fear of being hunted by dogs or the likes. Well there was another one, which cause a small laugh to escape her when mentioned. "As for catching sparrows, that's easy. I mean it should be quick to learn, maybe I can before you leave." She answered nonchalantly, staring back outside. She had never had an apprentice before, they usually went to the older warriors in the clan and those who could handle that responsibility. It would be a good test run to teach him, he would certainly be easier than some of the apprentices she knew.
"Though if you truly wish to continue living in the city, I guess that wouldn't be too bad. Wouldn't it be hard to return to eating rats after tasting the fresh prey here? I mean" a yawn broke her sentence, making her rest her head on her paws. "I don't like the taste of rat, it's the last resort for me." She closed her eyes, not asleep just yet though, instead her ears were still perked up listening to him. "You could even find your own group out there, one that would offer you protection from vicious kittypets." She teased, letting a mrrow escape.

He laughed aloud as she jovially mocked his wound, and even though she didn't know just how ironic what she was saying was, he still found her comment funny on its own. He initially avoided talking more about the city, sticking with his comment about his ability to hunt.
"Teach me?" He queried, trying to clarify if that was what she meant. "Tsk tsk. I don't know if Quailpad would like that," He cautioned comically, though he straightened up a little where he lay and let his smile fade for a moment. "Really, though. You shouldn't keep sticking yourself out there for me, especially with this tension that is between you and all of your clanmates." He gave a quick shrug. "Then again, you could just tell them it's against your code to let a cat die, so..." He talked himself back from warning her against it, thinking it might not be a bad thing if he could get a lesson out of her, maybe just to figure out how skillful they were, and maybe to improve his own hunting ability. He hadn't forgotten about her off-paw comment about seeing the lake either.
"Honestly, it's a rare day I have anything other than rat. I just...can't get used to eating this sort of prey, because then I really won't want to go back to rat. I have to deal with what I'm given." He sighed quietly, not sounding like he was that happy with the fact. "The city doesn't have much else. Have you had raccoon? It isn't that much better."

"That I could, tell them the poor lil city cat can't hunt for itself. What ever shall I do if I know he's being sent off to the big open world without a few good skills?" Her sarcasm was evident in her tone, though she would like to train him. The clan didn't need much of an explanation for this, they probably wouldn't even say anything if she left with him right now. As long as they were both back by sundown the clan would let it go unnoticed until he had to make his leave. She opened one eye to look at him, taking in his facial features, sure it might seem weird but even if the clan was willing to let the memory of him fade away into the background once he left, she didn't want to. They may have just met today but he was proving himself to be a good friend to her, it almost saddened her to think he would be gone soon. She would go back to her warrior duties and proving herself to the clan while he went about his own life, whatever that may be beyond what he already said. She found herself wondering if he would remember her, the warrior who had brought him inside her clan's walls in hopes of healing him but instead got him held prisoner in a den with her. I'm not a prisoner though, right? I could stand up and leave this den at any time, go to my own spot in the other warrior's den. The thought wasn't very convincing to her, deep down she knew she would be sent right back in here and another cat would be posted outside to keep them inside. She knew she was being punished for this, there was no denying this was the reason she was the sole warrior watching over him. If he was a true threat to them, the clan would choose more than just an unreliable warrior.
Upon realizing she was zoning out while staring at him, she promptly closed her eyes once more, listening to him explain why he couldn't just continue to eat sparrow like this. "Perhaps I should bring you a rat tomorrow then? I'm sure I can find some hiding out around here. Be a bit of a challenge, but anything for you to feel more comfortable." When he mentioned a raccoon, her ear swiveled towards him showing a sign of curiosity. "I don't think I've even heard of those before, guessing it's good I havent if they arent good prey though right?" She wanted to keep talking but she could feel darkness calling her name, begging her to fall into a deep sleep. Today had only just begun but she was exhausted after everything. Perhaps tonight she wouldn't dream of Adderskip.

Rowan laughed again as her sarcasm humored the rogue cat and left him with a funny image of Softchirp guiding him like a kit through the basics of hunting while her clanmates stared on, befuddled. He appreciated that she was showing a lighter and more jovial mood now, having left behind the dreariness of just a bit earlier. He knew these feelings came and went, but he was glad they were sharing a laugh.
He took in a deep breath as she pondered if she should get him a rat, and he tried to figure out if she was using sarcasm again, or if that was a genuine offer to do whatever would make him comfortable. A little uncertain as to the answer, Rowan simply bit down on his lip and shook his head slightly. "If you have to hunt for the poor, helpless little city cat, I don't think it gets to be very picky," He murmured, not wanting to come off as demanding. Though...maybe he just...wouldn't mind another piece of something that didn't taste two steps away from having a disease?
He blinked down at her as she seemed to be settling down, going back to having her eyes closed as she lay in her own nest. He quietly exhaled the breath he had taken in, turning his gaze back towards the outside of the den. He didn't know if she was going to rest, but he was wondering what tomorrow would look like. He'd be sleeping here tonight, and then what of the morning? Was he going to be expected to stay still? The medicine cat had cautioned no movement, but that sounded like an utter drag.
Sighing, he set himself to quietly licking down his fur.
(Sure, that sounds great also totally just an idea but what if at some point Adderskip starts giving Rowan spoopy dreams where he spoops Rowan or like warns him about consequences of what he's doing or something?)

The morning sun was filling the den through the uncovered holes above, piercing light hitting the face of the warrior sleeping inside. She knew it was time to wake up, actual time for warrior's to start their day, but she didn't want to move. The brush of her brother's fur against hers bringing comfort as she finally freed herself from the dream world. When her eyes opened, she realized she wasn't inside her regular den, instead it looked more rugged...The day before floating into her memory. It wasn't her brother's fur touching hers, no it was dark brown in color nothing like the lighter fur she and him carried. Rowan. As soon as she realized who it was truly sleeping so close to her, she brought herself back into her own nest, embarrassed. At least she had woken up early, it would be more uncomfortable if it was the tom himself waking her up to show she had moved from her own nest into his.
She waited a few more heartbeats, listening the birds chirping outside the camp. It would be a good day for hunting, prey seemed to be awake already by the sounds of it. The cream colored molly wouldn't be able to participate in any patrols though, no, she would be confined inside the camp like she had been only moons before. It was nothing new, though days would begin to blend together soon if he stayed much longer. She let a low sigh out, stretching out her muscles and bringing herself to the sitting position. She looked back to the sleeping Rowan, slapping her tail against his side much like Hayflame would do to her. "Hey wake up sleepy head. It's morning. I actually woke up at a decent time!" She spoke in a excited hushed tone, a giddiness filling her.

(alright c: )
Softchirp fell into sleep long before him, leaving him alone to his thoughts which was something he did not mind. He had a lot to think about--the takeover of this clan, how to make it work. What to do with the cats they beat, whether they would submit to new leadership or not. He also had to think about how to get himself to be able to stay longer, somehow. He wasn't certain how to make it happen as no answer was coming to his mind, and he eventually found himself fatigued with being unable to think of a clever way to extend his stay. Sighing with resignation, he settled himself down and prepared himself to catch an early sleep.
He didn't expect to sleep the whole of the evening and night, but he did, perhaps making up for some of the deficit of the previous days. Her tail slapping him left him startled and his head rose up as he mumbled something incoherent with wide, dazed eyes.
He stared at Softchirp for a few seconds, not understanding what was happening or remembering right away where he was and who this cat was. After a few seconds he blinked and remembered everything, and with a quiet groan, blinking his eyes shut and laying his head back on the nest, he responded to her. "Already? I've barely caught a wink of rest," He protested, left groggy from the length of time he had slept.
Knowing what she would say, he lifted his head back up after several seconds, his eyes half open as he looked at his side, taking in how the wound was looking. It wasn't burning him with pain, so that was a good sign. Achy and stiff, he rose up from the nest he was in, oblivious to the way he'd been adjusted towards the edge of it to make space for her in his sleep.
He gave a stiff stretch with a quiet groan of pain, and he gazed ahead at her as his lithe brown musculature flexed with it. "I'm an injured cat. Don't I get special sleeping late privileges?" He quietly protested with a drop of tired humor to his voice.

"You'd think so, but no. Whitespark should get a look at your wound this morning to see how it was through the night and I feel, no offense, the sooner we got out of her fur today the better." She quickly brought herself to her feet, readying him to come along with her to the medicine cat's den. She knew Whitespark would be up by now, she was one of the first cats in the clan to wake every morning so she could get everything prepared in case something hectic happened throughout the day. I don't envy the medicine cat's at all for the path they follow, waking before the sun has even rose would be torture.
"Also, as a temporary member of Chasmclan," She had decided to not use the word 'prisoner' or captive, she preferred to think of him as a cat staying with them as a member of the clan than the other "You should grow used to waking up earlier than you probably would in the city. As Gingerstar says, the sun waits on no cat, best to start the day with it." She had heard those words so often she could even hear her mother saying them to her. "Apologies, but I want to give you the full clan life experience before you leave." She purred, pride swelling in her chest once more. Even though her own life in the clan wasn't always great, she still took pride in the life she lived. She didn't think she was above Rowan but she couldn't hide the feeling that being a clan cat was a bit better than a city one. Of course, we are born into the lives that are given to us, if only we had a choice in the matter. If they could, she was sure that most cats would choose to be a clan cat.

Rowan gave a grumpy grunt as Softchirp finished speaking, not appreciating at all the call to actually adjust to the life of the clan that he was infiltrating and being hosted by. The truth was that there wasn’t a whole lot to do except get yourself food and protect your own little area in the city, and, well....obey commands, if they came someday. Like the previous day.
“Yeah. Your medicine healer-y cat didn’t seem to distinguish between me and a dirt patch. The younger one, though, what was her name? She was at least...well, she didn’t seem to hate me. That was nice. Shadepaw? It’s Shadepaw, right?” He should make a point of greeting and smiling at the cat who had wanted to know soooo much about him. In a funny way, he didn’t really think that, after the previous day of conversation, the apprentice was all that different from Softchirp. Just...not as good at containing all that she wanted to know.
He left behind the issue of waking up, hoping it would fade into the back of consciousness and that he could sleep to his normal time the next day. “I guess we better go, then. I’m sure it’ll be a quick look, no problem, and done.” He yawned, then started stepping towards the exit of the den, glancing back at Softchirp, not particularly interested in taking a lead.
