Man I hate these. They're so tedious. I keep telling myself that I really need to hurry up and power through Midnight (it's been a good two weeks or so, and I'm only 52% in oof), but this ain't it chief? I remember the first time I read Dawn, I skipped a large chunk of the journey, then the part where they explore the territory, because ugh. It was my least favourite book in the arc. Do you like travel segments? If not, how do you think they could be improved?

I very rarely like traveling books as far as this book is concerned. Not to mention they tend to feel kinda repetitive after awhile, at least for me. I mostly just tend to skim through them.

I spent I think 2-3 months on Outcast and a month on the first half of Sunrise because of the travel portions (The former being a tribe book doesn't help matters). God help you if you have a travel segment going COMPLETELY off the map (including the old map that shows past the territory, which I used for TNP in the past when I still could find it), it's impossible to get your bearings then when that happens, and thus literally every twolegplace just blends together and it is hard to indentify even more with how they describe twoleg objects so poorly.

In general, they’re a snoozefest. In my opinion, The Sun Trail and Hawkwing’s Journey did them well.

I'd rather see life in the clans, but I don't mind them. I do wish that all the cats they meet along the way, like Woody from the Beaver Trip, Bob, etc, would at least get a mention again, instead of being completely forgotten

I think this is why I dislike them - barely anything that happens in the travel segments seems to affect the main plot.

True, some events has affected the main plot, like Purdy, and the Tribe, but others, not so much. I understand that there's a ton of characters to deal with, and other things, but it's a bit sad, that they never mention these cats. I know Cody wasn't exactly a cat they met while travelling, but she's still a cat outside the clan, who pretty much saved Birchfall, and I don't think she was ever mentioned again after she left.

It really was I think Cody and Daisy could have become really good friends, if Cody had stayed, I could see her being a perm queen

The travelling segments of TNP weren't too bad in my opinion. The ones in the other books I've read slowed me down.

Most of them I find to be a bore. Though, books like The Sun Trial and Hawkwing's Journey were executed pretty well. It does make me concerned for Graystripe's Vow, since he's obviously doing some travelling in that book.

Oh! Another good thing about traveling books, is how they shine some light on some otherwise background characters that haven't got much attention in awhile. I really liked the traveling scene in The Power of Three, where Brambleclaw, Birchfall, Brackenfur, Hazeltail, etc went looking for Sol. It had a really cute scene of Hazeltail and her father Smoky, and it showed how much Birchfall cared about Whitewing and their unborn kits.

I love the idea of traveling scenes in books in general, though warriors seems to force them and while other books really get creative these just seem to be "we see some sheep. A dog chases us. Twolegs. A friendly kitty pet. Someone falls in a river. The end."

I struggled though TNP bc of the journeys. They’re just filler and a pain to read.

I really don't mind traveling segments, most books do them well like Hawkwings Journey. That book include the character traveling across half the world but you hardly notice. We'll see if Graystripes Vow is a good traveling book, and as long as someone else comes with him I think it will be good.

I agree that that they can be tedious in some books, but to me, they’re NOTHING compared to the plot-halting, incredibly repetitive Moonpool trips. They didn’t bother me as much in the earlier books because they were included much more sparingly, but now it seems like we’re forced to watch the same POV medicine cats make the same trek to the Moonpool and make the same small talk two or three times every book. I know there’s extenuating circumstances in TBC, but that honestly makes the trips even more frustrating because of their redundancy.
Okay, sorry for that. More on topic. I think the least tedious traveling segments are the ones that feel reminiscent of Fireheart and Graystripe’s journey to rescue WindClan, there and back again. They are an ideal length— long enough to detail the truly important challenges and intriguing aspects of the trip, but short enough to allow at least two-thirds of the remaining novel (including time spent at the destination) to breathe. They have clear plot relevance, genuine tension, and compelling interactions between both established characters and newly introduced ones. Basically, they are just as engaging as the events that take place in the sedentary remainder of the novel, getting across to the reader that the journey is as important as the destination. I think Moonrise and Crookedstar’s Promise both have good examples of such traveling, as well as several books that others have already mentioned.
