Doing this again, because I read PoaW and boy do I . . . not like it.
Redtail's Debt
Listen, I absolutely loved the idea of Redtail coming into his own and not looking up to Tigerclaw all the time, but did they have to do that debt thing? It was fine but then Tigerclaw murdering him due to that (and other reasons) was incredibly dumb. I'd like it better if Redtail was in awe of Tigerclaw ever since he saved him and he looked up to him until he realized Tigerclaw's morals were twisted and sick. Another thing I hated was the retconning. Firstly, Ravenpaw's attitude. In Into the Wild, he was jumpy, and especially afraid of Tigerclaw. Here, he's agreeing with him, and starting to be like Tigerclaw? What? You could argue that he became jumpy ever since Tigerclaw killed Redtail, but Bluestar's Prophecy states that he's been jumpy since day one, and that's what I'd like to believe. Ravenpaw does not strike me as the "if you turn down battle you're weak" type.
And now for the piece de resistance, or rather, the opposite of it: the whole Redtail killed Oakheart thing. Blech. The whole point of ITW was that Oakheart was killed by a rockslide and Tigerclaw lied. Not that he was partially telling the truth. He lied. I don't get how you could ignore such a crucial part of the books! *bangs my head against wall*
Tawnypelt's Clan
I actually liked this one. I liked how they portrayed Tawnypelt's restlessness and unwillingness to let go of what she once knew. Kind of like "back in my day" but more nostalgic and sad. The fact that she refuses to accept the new ShadowClan after everything Darktail has done is really nice, to show that she longs for the days where ShadowClan is strong, her mate is by her side, and she's not at odds with everyone. The dream was nice too, to show that she really wants to believe that she's back in the old ShadowClan. Not sure why they had to include the Tribe in this one (perhaps for a getaway?), but it was a nice change of pace from the Clans. Overall, I wouldn't say this contributes much to the overall plot, but I did like it.
Shadowstar's Life
I wanted to like this book, but there were just some aspects of it that I didn't like. Firstly, the things I did like. I liked Shadowstar mulling over what would happen once she was gone, once all the original leaders were gone. I also liked how she felt concerned about this life being her last. However, I feel like there was a better way to create the battle where Shadowstar died. The Quick Water thing felt rushed, and completely contrived just to create conflict. I also hated how ShadowClan and WindClan were the only ones believing Shadowstar, and everyone else was like "but why?" Why would Shadowstar lie? That whole thing was a mess. I also hated Sun Shadow's death, because a. I like him and wanted him to be leader and b. it felt like Diet Coke Lightning Tail's Death.
Overall, PoaW was fine, but I still prefer LotC to it (except for that one)
