back at it with the mapleshade
she and her story (prior to going to the dark forest) is the most interesting one to me so many things could have been avoided or changed had someone had more moral decency
So
Au where Reedshine isn’t horrible and actually gets mad and rejects Appledusk for cheating and throwing his former mate out like trash to save his skin and steps in to defend Mapleshade instead of him.
Like she sees Appledusk just, saying it was a mistake and all that
and not even so much caring about his dead kits, but more so the fact he could get exiled
And wonders if the roles were switched would he do the same?
So instead of 'no cat is more loyal than appledusk' (like reed what the heck were you thinking) she turns on him, calling him a two timing cheater (which he is)
after this, she taks pity on Mapleshade, this soaking wet queenwho just lost her kits and had her mate throw her out, and convinces Darkstar to let her stay, if only to recover....after all this is a thunderclan warrior they could gain, someone who knows the cats weaknesses and is an extra claw.
Appledusk doesn't get banished but the clan is not having any of it (besides his apprentice I imagine)
Mapleshade is in shock but Reedshine helps her through it and actually names one of her kits after Mapleshades deceased ones (flowerkit to remember petalkit) as the two spend more and more time together and Mapleshade earns her place in riverclan
Perhaps the two even start to get feelings for each other. Having future litters with help from some tom.
And appledusk dies alone and mad

How was Reedshine gross? She's one of the few characters in that novella who wasn't.

How was Reedshine gross? She's one of the few characters in that novella who wasn't. I guess gross is a bit of an exaggeration
I just, come on reed
It made me annoyed to see her defend her cheating mate and just..stick with him after seeing how he treated mapleshade
and then to throw shade (pun intended) at a grieving mom

To be fair, Reedshine was already pregnant at this time. Her motivation for defending Appledusk probably had more to do with not wanting her kits to be without a father and probably considering him to be the lesser of two evils.
Though, in general, the entirety MV could've been alot better.

I revel in the idea of Appledusk sulking in Riverclan camp as Mapleshade cuddles around Reedshine and they swoon over the kits that see Reedshine and Maple as their parents instead of Apple

Knowing Mapleshade, she'd probably not be any better off. She'd still want to kill Frecklewish and Ravenwing. We saw Myler attempt to show her kindness and she refused it. Perhaps Reedshine's aid may keep her from going so far, but I don't know. Mapleshade always seemed to have an idealistic view of her plans.

She denied Myler after everyone had rejected her. I just wonder if one person showing her kindness (Darkstar or Reedshine) could have helped. Riverclan was brutal to her. She loses her kits and then they don't even let her take shelter for the night.

It's also possible that it makes it worse by giving her time to recuperate and make a more thought out revenge plan than her haphazard schemes. The moment that Appledusk revealed she was just a fling seemed to be the worst moment to her. She wasn't going back at that point.

I always took it as Mapleshade having lost support from everyone in her life was the final nail. It was when she made the promise that she had taken that step to mur d e r. If I recall correctly she didn't go straight to murder either, it was only after sulking alone for a while did she finally snap. Myler was there yes but a random stranger wouldnt do much good at that point I like to believe if just one person had shown some kindness before the curtain call that she wouldn't have turned out the way she did and the clans were shaped enough by it that now most cats aren't murder happy when it comes to half clan kits (keyword most) I think in this au I imagined she would have her moments of starting to fall/dark thoughts but Reed would snap her out of it

Once you get the heart freezing metaphor, it seems like the die has been cast and they've made up their mind.

If something like this had happened, I don't think Mapleshade would have any reason to try and get revenge. She'd have kits to raise, a new love interest, a new home, and the tom that cheated on her would suffer, etc. I don't think she'd be forgiving toward ThunderClan, but hey, since River and Thunder were still at odds there would be a good chance she'd meet her formal clanmates in battle, and can take her anger out on them while also proving her loyalty to RiverClan. Who knows.

I find this to be an interesting thought, because I can definitely imagine Mapleshade going nuts on ThunderClan during battles, and maybe even losing her temper, which gets a ThunderClan cat near-killed (or actually killed), so her RiverClan Clanmates are like, "Okay, that's...not good, but it also is good? They're our enemies, so yes, viciousness is expected and wanted, but...wow. I don't know how to feel" lmao I would love if that happened, because you can bet that she'd certainly not to show any affection or hesitation toward her former Clanmates. RiverClan shouldn't have an issue with her being soft on ThunderClan.

Honestly, I could imagine this Mapleshade being like Thistleclaw was towards the end of his life, where he was delusionally paranoid and seeing enemies everywhere. It works out so long as you don't get caught out alone, but if she is, then she's going to end up dead in a ditch like Thistleclaw did. It got Snowfur killed too, for that matter. Life spans are slashed heavily when you become that one super aggro clanmate.

I wonder if she'd be able to stop herself in the thick of fighting if she had to, but I very much doubt it. I mean, once she has a goal, she's certainly on the nose about completing it, but that could extend to battle as well, with her attacking ThunderClan until she can't anymore. ThunderClan cats would fight back just as hard, because they despise her, as we saw their reactions when she was exiled. Even so, this is an AU, so I'd like to imagine she does find it within herself to control her temper with thoughts of the family she's created in RiverClan, so her determination to get back at ThunderClan only goes as far as her wanting to prove her worth to her new Clanmates and be a loyal warrior now.

All I can think about is her being announced as deputy at a Gathering, and the ThunderClan cats being meme that's like "(chuckles) We're in danger" ;p They'd lose their minds. Just imagine how pissed they would be...perhaps she'd enjoy their reactions, and how they clearly seem to think she'll be constantly vying to attack their territory now that she has authority to make those calls, but really, she's just happy with what she's got now. The best revenge is living life to the fullest and proving your enemies wrong about you, and maybe in this world, she would be happy with that.
