I am not very familiar with poisonous plants, but I always asked myself if death berries are realistic. They work extremely fast, Brokenstar died after a few moments. Is it realistic that they work that fast? The poison shouldn't even be in their blood after such a short time, should it?

I think it is, the actual name for them are yew berries, and if a human eats a seed, then they could die, so I imagine a little cat would die, and probably much quicker than a human.

I don't know how realistic Brokentail's death is. I guess it depends on how many berries he ate. From what I've read about yew (or death berries as they are called in Warriors) death may occur within a few hours of ingestion.

its not realistic for them to die within seconds like Brokenstar did but they're definitely poisonous. iirc it takes humans a few hours to die after eating them so it would probably take a cat several minutes

I'd never thought about this before, so I got curious and googled how long it'd take for yew berries to kick in. Most sources that I found say it happens rather quickly, but not many websites are specific of the exact hour. This type of cause of death hasn't been recorded frequently with humans, beyond their usual these-are-poison warnings. The ones reported mostly pertain to livestock, like cattle -- who are humongous -- dying within 24 to 48 hours, with humans taking up to 1 to 4ish hours (the longest possibility I saw was an estimated 6ish hours) before they're dead. They don't exactly detail whether it's just the berries that were eaten, or the entire plant, which might make a difference with potency? I dunno. Reports say that the animals are usually found dead right by the yew berry bushes, so it must kill fast, because the animals don't get far from the bush. But since we're talking about cats, who are not only a lot smaller than humans and livestock, but whose kidneys and livers much work faster and break down or absorb stuff quicker than us, that makes a big difference. Cats' kidneys and/or livers are always, like, two seconds from shutting down if they eat something that doesn't agree with them, poisonous or not. When a cat's health is going downhill, they go alarmingly fast; the kidneys and/or livers are very often the culprit. That said, deatherries would almost certainly work quicker for them, I think? Since Yellowfang fed the berries to Brokenstar, then sat and talked to him for several minutes (and keep in mind that he kept chewing and eating while they were talking; that almost certainly didn't help matters), and then Firestar heard another few minutes of Brokenstar dying slowly and painfully, I'd presume the Erins weren't that far off ;p

I'm assuming Yellowfang gave him several and was familiar with the potency?
