So I was just lurking when a question popped into my head. Forgive me if I'm flat-out wrong, my memory on Arc 3 is very fuzzy at this moment, but what was the point of Sol and Rock? I know Sol stirred up trouble with the eclipse and whatnot, but other than he felt kind of pointless...? Like they were teasing that he was going to reveal the Three's parents, but they just ended up ignoring him in the end and finding out anyway? Like? Rock was supposed to be an undying spirit guide (what was up with that anyway?) to Jayfeather, but he wasn't that helpful and felt kind of patronizing tbh. Why not just use Midnight? In the end of it all I just felt done with them and confused as to what their purpose was. Then again POT felt directionless in general.

sol was kind of useless but he was one of the few saving graces of that arc imo. i agree that rock is boring and pointless though

I don't really know what you mean by "purpose". Sol seemed like he was supposed to be the arc's villain but then the Erins thought some family drama would be cooler (which it was, it just needed to be planned earlier).
As for Rock, I think his purpose is pretty clear. He's there as a superior figure to the afterlives like StarClan and the Tribe of Endless Hunting, and is there to teach Jayfeather about cat history so that we as readers can get more lore. I don't think he was ever meant to be a spirit guide that would Jayfeather with current problems, just to teach him about the past (Jay actually asks him for advice several times and he always says "I'm not here to tell you that")
I think Po3 has the best ideas of all the arcs, but it did suffer from a severe lack of planning. A lot of the more interesting elements are only brought up a few times and the narrative does get distracted and sidetracked a lot.
