Should Sol have been better off left as a deliberately enigmatic antagonist? As in a villain whose lack of background is what makes them seem so mysterious and appealing. Somewhat similar to the Judge from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, the Dark Knight's Joker, and John Carpenter's the Thing?

I actually liked him better after he got a backstory. Like, before I read SkyClan and the Stranger, I didn't give a rat's butt about him honestly. Now, I feel really sorry for him, and I'm curious to learn more.

Absolutely 100% yes. plus the thing about characters like him in general is that they can wear out really easily if they’re kept around for too long and loose their mystery too fast(see also: discord) so he probably shouldn’t have been around after po3 to begin with
but anything would have been better than him literally stamping his foot yelling “I WANNA BE A WARRIOR!!!11”

His mysteriousness was what made him good, if anything the backstory WAS what ruined him for me. In Eclipse he's like some alien, the way he acts, interacts, talks, he was an enigma in of himself, giving him a sob sory tha they did soured that for me and made him less enjoyable as a whole. His appeal for me WAS the mystery. Who the hell is this guy? Why does he do these things? Yet learning this stuff takes away that very appeal. Not knowing him was the best part of his character because it made him even more like an alien of a being to the cast AND readers.
