L followed, listening to Orpheus quietly for the moment. He wasn’t sure this would give him any clues, but it might, right? He needed everything he could get, and this, this was a chance to get to know Orpheus better. “Have you ever been to one?” He questioned, following Orpheus out the door, his hands in his pockets. If he had, then maybe L could make him slip up and say he’d been somewhere the real Orpheus certainly hadn’t been.

L considered that, weighing it against what he knew. So far, he didn’t think Orpheus had made any mistakes, but he was ready for when it happened. “Interesting.” He answered, nodding a little. He would have to look into this “Mr. Hermes” more, wouldn’t he? That seemed a valuable clue to him, though he couldn’t have said why exactly. Perhaps he would press Orpheus for more information at another time. For now, he was more interested to see where this went on its own. He paused, then shook his head a little. “To be honest, I’m a little annoyed with my current case.” He answered. “So, no, nothing that can’t wait.”

L had no idea what to expect from the fair. Or festival. Whatever it was. He didn’t know what to expect from it, was the point. “It is mostly confidential.” He agreed, though he paused as he met Orpheus’ eyes, his own expression difficult to read. Well...he supposed he could take the other person up on that, couldn’t he? Though he obviously couldn’t actually tell him anything specific. Well...that was easily explained by the whole confidential thing. “I’ll consider it.” He said honestly, deciding not to make a decision right away. Best to think it over first. “As you said, it’s quite confidential, but I don’t doubt you would be helpful.”

Orpheus watched, honestly surprised that Ryuk was even considering it. He had almost expected the detective to dismiss the idea out of hand, and was pleasantly surprised to find him considering the option. “Let me know if you ever want me to listen, or talk about it with you. I’ll leave you my work schedule. I start tomorrow, actually.” He sounded relatively proud of himself for that fact. It hadn’t taken too much to find a job, but the fact that he had actually taken the initiative to do it? That had been a huge step for him. “We’re almost there,” he added after a moment, pointing to the fairground up ahead. There were lights strung up around the area, and people milling about. Orpheus pulled out the money he had brought for entry, then moved towards the entrance.

Had L been honest with Orpheus, the conversation would have gone very differently. Then again, had L been honest with Orpheus, he wouldn’t have gotten to know him at all, so maybe that wasn’t a fair comparison. He had no reason not to lie to him, though. And so far Orpheus had bought every single thing he’d said....or, at least, pretended to. l didn’t believe he was being honest for even a moment, but it didn’t matter. “Oh, congratulations.” He responded, remembering that Orpheus had been looking for a job. Pretending to, at least. “What is it?” Would Orpheus tell him? Probably, yes, as he had little excuse not to. They were friends, just two friends going to a fall thing together, nothing at all suspicious about it. “So we are.” He agreed, looking at the entrance. Right, it was a thing that cost money. This, he supposed, was why Watari had insisted he take some with him. He had no idea how much it was likely to cost...he glanced at Orpheus, leaning over to see how much he had, then copying him. Then he followed, eyes moving constantly to keep an eye on everything.

“Thanks,” Orpheus returned, a smile pulling at his lips. “I got hired by a café, to be their waiter. Server? Something like that.” He couldn’t remember the proper word for it, but it didn’t really matter. A job was a job. Did he consider Ryuk a friend? Not yet, he decided. They had only known each other a few days, after all, and they hadn’t spoken all that much besides that first day when Orpheus had invited Ryuk to stay. But maybe… maybe, he considered, they could be friends. Maybe this was the start of something. “Oh,” Orpheus responded, glancing at the money Ryuk had pulled out. “I… it’s not that expensive, I pulled enough for both of us.” He offered an uncertain smile, hoping Ryuk wouldn’t take offense to that. “I just thought… since I have a job now… my treat, yeah?” He was blushing as he said it, hoping desperately that Ryuk wouldn’t be hurt that Orpheus wanted to pay. He didn’t know him well enough to know if he was the type that would take offense. After a long moment, he handed the money to the person at the front, still blushing. “Two, please,” he murmured, casting a glance at Ryuk.

L nodded a little, considering what that could possibly mean. Why had he chosen to get a job only a few days after L had arrived? Was he telling him something? Or was he trying to seem normal, to throw L off his trail? He hesitated a moment later, caught off guard by Orpheus’ explanation. Oh...so he wasn’t supposed to pay after all? Well, that was good, since he barely knew how to do that. He was far from offended, and out the money back in his pocket, nodding to Orpheus, expression serious. “Thank you.” He said simply, following him to the entrance. “That’s kind of you.” Was he trying to make L feel like he was in debt to him. Was he trying to make L realize he was the one who held the power here? Or...was this simply an attempt to make friends, to lull L into a false sense of security? Either way, he stepped inside after him, and his eyes widened a little as he looked around. There was…a lot of things. He turned a full circle slowly, looking around at all of the interesting things he hadn’t seen before, eyes scanning his surroundings thoroughly but for once not only for danger.

The thing about Orpheus is he would have a hard time seeming normal, even if he were trying his absolute hardest. He was just trying to live life and make it through each individual day. It was harder now than it had ever been before, but… having someone around made it easier, whether Ryuk realized he was helping or not. “Of course,” Orpheus replied, more than grateful that Ryuk hadn’t been offended by him offering to pay. Well… he hadn’t even really offered, he had just paid. Was that inappropriate? Oh well… it was done now, and Ryuk didn’t seem terribly offended. Which was a relief. The fairground – or… well, it wasn’t exactly a fairground, but whatever it was… was huge. Orpheus spun around a few times, trying to get a glimpse of everything it had to offer. “Do you… have a preference for what we do first?” he asked after a long moment, glancing over at Ryuk. He rubbed his hands together, realizing the air was slightly chillier than he had anticipated. “Personally,” he murmured after a moment, watching his breath billow into the sky, “I think I would prefer to find somewhere selling cider.” He looked around. What were the other options? A ferris wheel? A corn maze, pumpkin patch… petting zoo… there was plenty to do. And probably not enough time to do it all.

L wasn’t intending to help. He didn’t even know what he was helping with, in fact. He was only aware that Orpheus was dangerous and he had to be very, very careful how he went about this. He certainly didn’t mind Orpheus paying. It wasn’t like he really understood social norms anyway, and he took Orpheus at his word that he wanted to, though he was suspicious of his motivations, of course, but he would have been suspicious no matter what Orpheus had done, so that wasn’t new. There were….so many things to look at. L couldn’t quite stop turning, slowly taking it all in, though he didn’t quite let Orpheus out of his sight. This could have been a trap, to throw L off guard. He wouldn’t allow that to happen. “I’m afraid I don’t know enough about what’s here to have a preference.” He admitted, glancing at Orpheus as the other person spoke. He brightened a little at the mention of cider, though and nodded. “I would like cider.” He agreed, glancing around the large area. There were a lot of things he didn’t know what to call...if Orpheus had intended to disorient him, then L had to hand it to him, he had succeeded.

Orpheus stood still, uncertainty dancing over his features for a long moment as he tried to take it all in. He had, of course, been in public places since he’d lost his hearing, but he hadn’t really been anywhere that had quite so much going on. Logically, he knew there were sounds all around them, various things attempting to pull their attention, but he wasn’t aware of what those things would be. He decided to stick close to Ryuk (well, hopefully not too close, he didn’t want to freak him out) and keep most of his attention there. If someone really wanted their attention, then Ryuk would tell him. Hopefully. “Maybe…” he considered for a long moment, then pulled out his phone and took a picture of the ground map that stood a few feet away. “I think maybe we should look over this over cider,” he explained. Maybe that would make it a little less overwhelming. Orpheus turned, pinpointing the short line waiting outside a small building with a menu tacked up on the entrance. It seemed… yes, it was a vendor’s building, not an actual restaurant. If anyone would have cider… he pulled closer, struggling a bit to make sure he was moving and leading the way, but also always keeping Ryuk in his line of sight. He didn’t really know what to do in the case of them getting separated.

If L had had more of a sense of personal space, he might he noticed how close Orpheus was to him, but he really didn’t. He was also distracted by the sheer number of things happening around him, the way the sounds and sights and smells pulled at his attention, dragging it away from Orpheus and tossing it gently back and forth between people and things. He glanced up as Orpheus removed a phone, and he hesitated, unsure what he was doing until he explained. “Ah.” He said, nodding a little. “That makes sense. It’ll allow us to see where we want to go after we get cider, and so on.” He turned a little, making sure no one was sneaking up on him, then followed Orpheus, hands in his pockets. He didn’t intend to let the other person out of his eight for even a moment, which meant whatever Orpheus did, he would do too. He wasn’t entirely sure what that meant, but he was going to find out soon enough. It didn’t occur to him that Orpheus might expect him to pay for his cider. In fact, it didn’t occur to him that it would cost money at all, and he was too lost in thought to notice the other people paying. That, and he was trying to take in his surroundings all at once. Which wasn’t working too well. His eyes were very wide.

Orpheus was, quite honestly, expecting Ryuk to pay for his own cider, especially since he had paid for the tickets. He wasn’t, however, going to be offended if Ryuk didn’t pay. He had brought enough money for the both of them. And he was probably going to get paid pretty soon – he started his job the next day, after all. They were at the front of the line now (it was moving quickly), so Orpheus quickly ordered his cider and paid, then moved out of the way so that Ryuk could order for himself. He had opened the map on his phone and started looking over the map. He didn’t want to make any decisions about their afternoon without Ryuk’s input, but he figured it would probably be best if he could at least orient himself. It took Orpheus a long moment to realize that the person at the counter was beckoning him forward, trying to serve him his drink. He blushed, then moved up to the counter and muttered an apology as he took his drink. It was hot – even the cup in his hand was hot – but he was looking forward to it. It at least helped mitigate the chill of the autumn breeze. Orpheus stuck his phone back in his pocket, breathing out and hoping that nobody would be upset with him for not noticing. Or for holding up the line.

There were way too many rules to keep up with. How was L to know that Orpheus intended to pay for their tickets but not for the cider? It was all terribly complicated. He perhaps needed to leave the house more, but he didn’t intend to do that. He could, but he wasn’t planning to, because he had plenty to keep him busy as it was. He watched Orpheus order, noting everything about how he did it, and not only because he was watching Orpheus closely anyway. He wasn’t entirely sure how to do it, and he planned to simply coyly what Orpheus did. He successfully managed to order his cider, though not before a couple confused, false starts. Then he realized they were waiting for him to pay. Ah, so Orpheus hadn’t done it. L didn’t mind, he just didn’t know what to expect...he pulled out some money, stared at it for a long moment, then handed it all over. Hopefully that would be enough. He stepped aside, letting the next person through, and his eyes landed on Orpheus ignoring the person offering him cider. Was he so lost in thought that he hadn’t noticed? Or was this intentional? He wasn’t sure, but before he could say anything, Orpheus moved and accepted the cider. So whatever he had been doing, it was either nothing or a subtle message. But what? L glanced over as they called out his fake name (Ryuk, naturally, it would have been difficult to explain if he’d used anything else) and accepted his cider, wrapping his hands around the warm mug, then looking expectantly at Orpheus.

Orpheus wasn’t paying much attention to Ryuk’s process of ordering. He just sort of assumed it was something that Ryuk knew how to do. It was something you watched the adults in your life do for a really long time until you were alone and you did it yourself, and maybe you fumbled a little bit trying to get the exact amount of change out, but in the end it worked out alright. Life was full of false starts and accidentally holding up lines. Orpheus just wished some people would be kinder about it. He tried to ignore the couple of people still in line that glared at them both as Orpheus led the way to an empty picnic table. Orpheus didn’t set the cider on the table, instead choosing to hold it carefully in the hopes that it would warm him up the rest of the way. It was doing the trick so far. “We’ve got a couple options what to do next,” Orpheus explained, setting the cider down long enough to pull out his phone and slide it across to Ryuk, the map shining up from the screen. “I think we should try to do as much as we can while we’re here, but that’s just because I think this stuff is fun, but…” he shrugged, hoping Ryuk would be alright with this. It was so hard to read him, especially without tone to give him a hint what Ryuk (and, if he were honest with himself, everyone else) meant. “There’s a petting zoo, which we might wanna do while it’s still warm, and the pumpkin patch, which we should probably do soon but ask them to hold our pumpkin for us until later, because it’s gonna be heavy and we don’t wanna carry it around all day. And we should do the ferris wheel at sunset.” Orpheus considered for a long moment, then tilted his head. “If… you don’t want to do something, just tell me. I’m sort of ambivalent about the corn maze, but it’s sort of like a puzzle, right? So you might like it…” He took a sip of his cider, immediately recoiling. “Too hot,” he mumbled in explanation.

L was watching, paying close attention to all the things the others were saying, the way they glanced their way. Okay, he didn’t know how to do this very well. He wasn’t in public very often, it was all very new to him. He was sure some of the glares at least were aimed at him, if not all of them. Still, he’d successfully acquired cider, so he wasn’t too worried. It didn’t occur to him that some of the glares might be aimed at Orpheus...why would they be? He leaned over the phone, looking at it curiously as he tried to see what Orpheus was indicating. The cider warmed his hands and he took a sip, then looked back at the phone, nodding seriously. “Yes, we should try things.” He replied agreeably, eyes flicking over the options before Orpheus even read them out. The corn maze caught his attention immediately, and he tilted his head at it. Trying to imagine what it would be like. He’d never actually been in a corn maze… “Yes,” he mused, glancing up. “That makes sense. I wouldn’t want to carry a large pumpkin around.” He was stronger than he looked, but he wasn’t that strong. His cider was hot. He blinked at the realization and stuck out his tongue a little, trying to get the air to cool it. Then he tilted his head at Orpheus again. “I would like to try the corn maze,” he said simply, sipping his cider again and running into the same problem as before. “The rest sounds good as well. I’ve never done any of this, actually, so it should be interesting…” He was actually looking forward to this. Even though Orpheus probably wanted him dead, he was an interesting person to hang out with. Besides, he’d promised Watari he would take care of himself, and this felt like it counted.

Orpheus gave a tiny smile, gaze catching on the way Ryuk stuck his tongue out just a little bit. Still too hot, he figured, so he elected to just keeping holding onto his cup instead. At least until it cooled off a little bit. The weather was crisp and chilly (though not quite unpleasant), so he figured it wouldn’t take very long for the cider to reach a drinkable temperature. He’d already burned his tongue on it a little bit, so he figured he could be patient. “The corn maze sounds fun,” he agreed, looking up from the phone to see if he could spot it from where they were sitting. It wasn’t immediately obvious that it was a corn maze, but if he squinted he could tell that what seemed like a green wall was actually a field of corn. He couldn’t see the entrance to the maze, but it probably wouldn’t be that difficult to find. “I’ve only done it a few times before,” he admitted softly, lightly blowing on his cider as though that would make it cool off. It didn’t do much, especially since the plastic lid was still on the cup. Still, his mind knew that food cooled off when you blew on it, and he hadn’t quite made the cognitive jump that told him it might not work as well with the lid on. He wasn’t actually paying that much attention to it – it was just force of habit. “We can drink our cider while trying to get out of the maze,” he murmured after a moment, glancing around as more people started to sit at the tables around them. “If you don’t want to sit here and finish it, I mean. We can get more done if we multitask, but… it’s up to you, really.” Orpheus managed a shy smile, trying to catch Ryuk’s gaze to see what he thought. “It’s just… if you haven’t done any of it before, I figured you might want the chance to try more things. Although… I guess we could always come back if we don’t finish everything…”

L could be patient and wait for his cider to cool off. He definitely could do that. It wouldn’t take long, probably, even if he didn’t know exactly how long it would actually take. He didn’t like the feeling of burning his tongue. Sticking it out didn’t actually help, though, so he stopped. He followed Orpheus’ gaze to what he assumed was the corn maze. Would it be fun? He hoped so. He didn’t want to waste time on something that wasn’t fun…would Orpheus object if he wasn’t having fun? L hoped he would. It seemed only fair that they do things both of them enjoyed... He noticed Orpheus blow on the lid, which seemed...not very productive if he were honest. He couldn’t quite see the purpose behind it. Did Orpheus realize the lid was still on? It was possible he didn’t...should L tell him? Was he overthinking this? The answer to the last question was a resounding yes. He shook his head a little to clear it, nodding once as Orpheus succeeded in catching his eye. “I’ve never done anything like this,” he answered honestly, sipping his cider again, forgetting it was hot. He stopped immediately but it was too late but he was forced to stick out his tongue a little again. Speaking a was consequently a little bit difficult, but he tried it anyway. “So...I’m really alright with whatever you consider the best things to be done,” he explained. “Shall we?”

Orpheus couldn’t hide the small smile that appeared as Ryuk tried his cider again, only to find that once again, it was a little too hot. He didn’t mean to laugh at his pain, it was just that… it hadn’t been more than a few seconds. Orpheus could relate. He had to keep suppressing the urge to take a sip from his own too-hot cider. “Maybe we should get some ice cubes,” he said after a moment, glancing at his own cider. “I thought the cooler weather would help cool it, but…” he shrugged, then shook his head a little bit. He didn’t know if watered down cider would really be the best, but it had to be better than repeatedly burning their tongues. Especially since he could tell from the way Ryuk was moving his mouth slightly differently that it didn’t feel very pleasant. It was harder to tell what he was saying with his tongue out, even that little bit. “Let’s start with the corn maze,” he decided, his smile softening just a little bit. He stood up, waiting for Ryuk to follow suit. Walking and talking was difficult, he found. He had to be walking perfectly even with the person he wanted to understand, and even then he had to sacrifice his ability to look out in front of himself if he really wanted to understand what Ryuk was saying. He would have to get used to it. For now, though, he had to balance understanding with not tripping over himself. Hopefully, Ryuk didn’t mind the balancing act he had to navigate.

“Yes, ice cubes,” L agreed, glancing down at his cider again, which was, naturally, still steaming. He resolved not to try it again until it stopped doing that. “The lids may be making that difficult,” he added, tilting his head a little at the cup before taking his lid off. And then realizing that he didn’t know where to put the lid...he was beginning to see a sliver of truth in the words ‘you need to get out more’. Functioning in human society was harder than it looked on security cameras, clearly. He stood up, moving to follow Orpheus to the corn maze, still holding both his cider and his lid, since he hadn’t yet spotted a trash can and he felt bad leaving in on the table. He had pulled his tongue back into his mouth as he had, once again, discovered that that was a poor solution. He has no idea it made things harder for Orpheus...well. If he had, he wouldn’t have been there in the first place. This also meant he didn’t realize he needed to look at Orpheus when he spoke. Thankfully, he had a habit of doing so anyway. “I see the entrance,” he said suddenly, pointing with his lid hand and trying his cider again with his other one. Against all odds, it burned his mouth again and he coughed a little, lowering it sheepishly. Old habits died hard, it seemed.

Well… as much as ice cubes would be a good idea, it seems like they weren’t going to get any. It was alright. The drinks would cool off eventually, and they’d at least have something warm to drink as they went through the corn maze. Orpheus hadn’t thought to bring gloves. He didn’t know if it was cold enough to need them, but he did know he was grateful for the warmth of the cider in his hands. The breeze was chilly, but not freezing… yes, it seemed like a perfect fall day. He hoped Ryuk thought so, too. Taking the lid off the cider was a good idea, Orpheus thought as he watched Ryuk do it. That way it might cool off just a little bit faster, even if there wasn’t really anywhere to put the lid. There had to be a trashcan somewhere, right? Orpheus opted to keep his lid on until he was sure there as somewhere to dispose of it. He didn’t want to lose the use of a hand to carrying around a lid. “You’re right!” he exclaimed, following Ryuk’s gaze (and his point). “There’s a trash can by the entrance, too,” he noted, tilting his head towards Ryuk’s lid hand. “We can toss those. Although… it might be possible that corn stuff could get in the drink…” He didn’t know if that made sense, but he knew that sometimes the corn fell off the stalks, if they had been touched by too many excited people. “I guess that’s not likely, though,” he admitted sheepishly.

L hadn’t intended to stop them from getting ice cubes, but it seemed he had anyway. Ah, well. It wasn’t a big deal, as long as Orpheus didn’t mind much. It was cold, but it wasn’t cold enough to make L actively wish he hadn’t agreed to come. It was...well, outdoors. A somewhat foreign concept to him, truth be told. He spent a good amount of his time in front of his computer, and when he wasn’t doing that he was on the phone or texting Watari or staring into space and thinking. He tried to sip his cider again, making a face as it burned him. He wasn’t going to have a tongue left if he didn’t stop that, but that was easier said than done, it seemed. “Oh, so there is,” he agreed, eyes finding the trash can right as Orpheus pointed it out to him. He sped up a little to get there faster, assuming Orpheus would follow, or if he didn’t, he’d catch up. He glanced over his shoulder at that, looking at Orpheus as the other person spoke. “Corn stuff...ah,” he said, tilting his head to look at his cider again. “I’m unfamiliar with corn, but if that’s a problem that could happen, I might want to keep the lid on. I don’t like corn.”

Watching Ryuk dip his tongue in hot cider for what must have been the fourth time was enough to make Orpheus start to regret that he hadn’t stopped Ryuk from heading to the corn field so he could grab ice first. But… hopefully it would be a drinkable temperature soon. He didn’t know why they were served so hot, except perhaps that people tended to carry them around and they still wanted them to be warm when they finally had a chance to drink them. But… people wouldn’t be forced to carry them around so much if they weren’t so scalding when first purchased… Orpheus shrugged, shaking the thought away. It didn’t matter, now. It would cool off sooner or later. “I… don’t know if it will be an issue,” Orpheus admitted, speeding up to keep pace with Ryuk. He didn’t want to miss out on anything his companion had to say. He was genuinely fascinating, and Orpheus was enjoying the chance to actually spend time with him and see him outside the context of sitting in the middle of the room and staring at a screen. That seemed to be most of what Ryuk did on a day-to-day basis – getting outside was probably a good thing. “I just remember things falling when I was last in a corn maze, but there were also teenagers throwing corn, and I was… tiny, so… it might not be a regular occurrence.” He glanced up at the entrance, a genuine smile flickering across his features. “Ready?” he asked, tilting his head. “There may be another trashcan inside if the lid becomes an issue. Or… I can carry it for you if it proves there’s no corn stuff falling from the sky.”

It was annoying, being handed a drink that couldn’t be consumed immediately. L didn’t want to keep burning his tongue, but waiting didn’t seem like it was happening. He tried to ignore the cup, instead glancing at Orpheus, who kept pace with him as he sped up. It was easy to forget why he was here, when they were hanging out like this, chatting like friends rather than enemies. But L didn’t forget for a moment. If that was why Orpheus had brought him here, he would be disappointed. Still, he supposed this wasn’t so bad. It turned out being that outside smelled different than inside. And there was a cool breeze that was at odds with the warmth of the sun...he was surprised by how many things were different. He had been thinking outside was mostly like inside, only...outside. Not that he hadn’t ever been outside, but for longer than it took to walk between buildings or get in a car...it had been a while. He couldn’t help that he checked over his shoulder now and then. There were people, anyone could have been sneaking up on him. And they had even more cause to do it now that he was with the imposter. “Ah. That would do it,” he mused, imagining corn being thrown. Okay, maybe he was imagining cooked corn, having never (or not in a very long time anyway) seen the plants, but still. He didn’t want any sort of corn in his cider. He didn’t even like corn when it wasn’t in cider. “Wait...we need to be strategic about this.” He answered seriously, eyeing the front of the maze. “We need a map, and we need to know where the exit is, so we know which direction we need to be headed in generally speaking.” He glanced around, looking for someone to ask, though he wasn’t sure how to tell. Maybe it would be obvious…? He hesitated, then carefully put the lid on his head, trusting his hair to stop it from falling off. “I need to be able to hold the map,” he explained. “And you can keep your hand along the wall, which will only work if there are no open areas where the wall ends, but that’s a risk we may need to take.”

Orpheus blinked. Okay, so Ryuk was either hyper analytical (which made sense, considering he was a detective), or he had never been in a corn maze. Or both. “The last time I was here, the corn maze was sort of like a scavenger hunt,” he informed Ryuk, giving a small smile as the detective placed the lid on his head. That was one way to do it, although Orpheus had to note that he would happily have carried it for him. Evidently, he either wasn’t trusted enough for that, or Ryuk had other plans for what Orpheus should be doing that required at least one hand for. He took a few steps ahead, keeping his eyes trained on Ryuk as he did so, just to make sure he didn’t miss anything his (possible) friend was saying. Were they friends yet? Orpheus might have said yes, but he also knew Ryuk was here for work, and it wasn’t like Orpheus had many friends to compare his feelings to. Maybe this was just what people felt for their more familiar acquaintances. Either way, Orpheus hoped that they might end up as friends before Ryuk left. Maybe they could stay in touch! Orpheus thought he would like that. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath and making it the rest of the way to the corn maze. “Here,” he said, fetching a map and handing it over to Ryuk. “It should show you… oh!” The surprise in his voice was genuine as he looked at the map for the first time. It was shaped. He didn’t know they did that with corn mazes, didn’t know they carved designs into them. “It’s Orion,” he said with no small amount of amazement. “Or… at least that part is. Oh… I guess it’s labelled.” Orpheus blushed, awkwardly scratching at the back of his neck. “But… but there’s the Big Dipper, too… it’s like we have to make our way across the sky in order to get through the maze. I like that.” He lifted his gaze to meet Ryuk’s, a smile shining wide and bright across his features. “I don’t think we’ll need to worry too much about keeping a hand on the wall. That would be… sort of hard, too, because the wall is made of corn plants. Stalks? I guess they’re called stalks.”

“Oh, a scavenger hunt,” L considered that, trying to decide whether that meant he should edit his plan. Truth be told, he didn’t know anything about corn mazes. He was just trying to think of a strategy that would make this as efficient as possible. Not that he wanted it to be over, of course, but it wouldn’t do to get stuck in the corn maze the whole time, and L didn’t expect Orpheus would want to come back tomorrow even if that did happen. Besides, it cost money to get back in, probably. He doubted Orpheus wanted to spend double the amount he was anticipating. He had decided Orpheus should keep his hand along the wall of the maze, which was why he hadn’t handed over his lid. Still...he supposed Orpheus could probably do both, now that he was thinking about it. Oh well. L accepted the map, taking a look at it and noticing the pattern at the same time Orpheus did. “Constellations,” he murmured, eyes widening a little. “I see. So...we’re spaceships.” That seemed to make sense. He didn’t know how space worked, it wasn’t terribly relevant to his work, but he figured traveling across space was what spaceships did. Even if he didn’t know how far actually spaceships had managed to go. He looked up, meeting Orpheus’ eyes, his own a bit surprised as he caught the smile. It looked so genuine...he almost believed it. He felt a tug at his heart, telling him he was wrong here. That he wasn’t the imposter he had decided he was. But it was just a feeling. There was too much evidence to discount on a gut feeling, he knew better than that. Anyone could smile. He smiled back, just a tiny, almost surprised, genuine smile, then turned towards the maze. “I see,” he said simply, trusting Orpheus’ maze judgment. He seemed like he’d been in them before. Unless...he was telling L something? He filed that thought away for later. “Well...in that case let’s go.” And he started inside, trusting Orpheus to follow.

“We’re spaceships,” Orpheus replied like it was a novel idea. He hadn’t thought of it like that, but now that he had… he was rather enamored with it. He didn’t think spaceships could actually travel between stars, but he didn’t think he minded if the analogy wasn’t perfect. Wasn’t that what poetry was? A bunch of imperfect analogies that made you feel something anyway? He wasn’t going to question Ryuk designating them as spaceships, and if he still wanted Orpheus to keep one hand on the corn… he would. He looked up, a small smile on his face as he looked at the endless maze of corn. Or… not endless, but close enough. It would probably take a little while for them to work their way out of it, and as long as they were both enjoying themselves… he couldn’t imagine a better way to spend an afternoon. Ryuk’s smile surprised him. He couldn’t recall if he had ever seen the detective smile before, but he looked… well, almost younger with it. Like he didn’t have to carry the weight of the world all of the time. Orpheus didn’t know Ryuk, but he wanted to help take some of that weight off of his shoulders. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to live knowing that you could slip up and it might actively hurt dozens, if not hundreds, of people. Perhaps a life that did so much good was predestined to be capable of doing a lot of bad on accident. Orpheus didn’t have to worry about that – he wasn’t doing much good at all with his life. He wasn’t even able to help the people he’d been trying to help before he’d lost his hearing. He supposed he could try to play for people again, but… he was afraid. And then Ryuk was inside the maze and Orpheus hurried after him, careful to keep one hand against the cornstalks as instructed. He didn’t want to miss anything that Ryuk had to say. It was… a little bit overwhelming, being out in public again. Knowing that there were things behind and around him he didn’t know about because he couldn’t hear them… he glanced suspiciously behind, expression clearing when he realized nobody else had entered the maze yet.

The idea of being spaceships had been an immediate one for L, a natural conclusion based on the facts. Maybe that wasn’t exactly how spaceships worked...he didn’t know...but they were in space and spaceships were also in space. As far as he knew, there wasn’t much else out there. Planets and stars and asteroids and comets and...fine, maybe there was a lot of there but he didn’t know how any of that worked, either. He was looking forward to making it through. He didn’t doubt that they’d be able to, especially with a map and a strategy, which he wasn’t at all experienced with but had confidence in anyway. He wasn’t sure what had driven him to smile. Orpheus...he was a threat, still, he wasn’t a friend. Was L starting to think of him as a friend? No, he told himself firmly, he wasn’t, he was just playing along, and getting closer to Orpheus was good for the case. That was why he’d done this in the first place, right? He knew it was dangerous, but he was sure he could keep the level of distance he needed, sure he could manage to stay objective. It was far from the first time he’d had to keep a steady mind in a difficult situation. He glanced at Orpheus as the other person caught up, noting the suspicious way he glanced around and behind him, his own alarm bells going off as he did. It was almost like he didn’t want anyone around...was he planning to get rid of L in the maze, somehow? No, people had seen them together, that would be stupid. He kept walking, eyes scanning his surroundings carefully as he moved.
