Sometimes I wish I came with a warning label. Or at least directions so people knew how to handle me. It’d make life so much simpler if I did.
“WARNING: tends to get overly attached to people they’ve known for only a week. DIRECTIONS: be gentle and kind, don’t push them away.”
I do that; I smile at each time my phone lights up with a text from them, I adjust my routes in the hallway just to see them for an extra few minutes, I even will drop everything just to hangout with them. I’m someone who thrives when interacting with people, when forming relationships. I’m so afraid of people leaving, I’m tired of people always leaving.
“WARNING: cries when yelled at/invalidated, or whenever experiencing strong emotion. DIRECTIONS: validate feelings and help them calm down if in a public setting.”
It happens to me all the time. When I got a new laptop for christmas I began to shake and bawl like a baby. Whenever I found out Zoe, my dog, had torn her Achilles tendon I bit my lip and let tears fall down my face. When I get made fun of I clench my fist and cry. It’s because there’s so much emotion in me it leaks out. I’m terrified that my feelings are wrong, I just want someone to tell me it’s okay to feel the way I do.
“WARNING: becomes moody/temperamental, will lash out with snark and sarcasm. DIRECTIONS: give space or respond with humor to ease their mind.”
It’s a habit of mine, a defense mechanism of a sort. There was this one time, my group therapist was talking about how people will “attention seek” and how that is a bad thing and I, being the smartass I am-and being in a grumpy mood-I replied, “no one can live without attention. I mean, I’m sure you’re getting plenty of it from your high horse.” Let’s just say it didn’t end well, but now it’s an ongoing joke. Whenever I seem pissed everyone quotes just that at me.
“WARNING: has a crappy sense of humor, will laugh at the worst/most random things. DIRECTIONS: either laugh with them or correct them if they said something harmful.”
I don’t know if it’s normal for people with mental disabilities to find jokes about death amusing, but I do. One of my favorite jokes is to say “kys” or “kms” where my friend always responds with “kys=keep yourself safe” or “kms=keep myself safe” which is ironic because it means the total opposite of that.
I guess you could find out all this stuff just from talking to me and being around me, or even just asking, but it’d be so much simpler if people just already knew this stuff about me and how to react to it.
