Really. From the start they had this very negative vibe to them. A lot of terrible, vile cats came from ShadowClan, and while there are good and decent cats within the Clan, many of the characters come across as battle-hungry, power-hungry, aggressive and unpleasant. Plus they've fallen apart enough times to warrant a drinking game. So why has SC been such an unstable Clan throughout the arcs (DotC SC was respectable though)? Is it just because the Erins like to torment them? Or is there some deeper issue?

Poor territory and values aside, I always thought Ripplestar and him randomly attacking the other Clans at a Gathering was the catalyst, and then it just became a downward spiral from then on.

Weren't they said to have the harshest territory? That could be part of the reason, having to fight harder to survive

bc the erins needed a token villain clan
okay but in all seriousness, Shadowclan being harsh and slow to trust does make sense since they're shown to have lived on a harsh, dark territory. it doesn't justify them being morons and allowing random strangers to take over all the time, but in theory it does make sense. i just wish they were better written tbh

ShadowClan is my favorite Clan!
But yeah, they do fall apart more often than the other Clans, and honestly I think that's because it's easier for the writers to have a dedicated punching bag than it is to spread the negativity around.
As for in-universe reasons, I think it may be their values on strength and the fact that they don't particularly care about Clan blood. While ShadowClan does make fun of TC all the time for having a kittypet leader, this seems to be more trash-talk than something they actually believe, especially because ShC has a lot of non-ShC and non-Clan cats, and always has. As long as you can prove your strength and loyalty to the Clan, they'll take you in. The lack of the same level of distrust of outsiders "just because they're outsiders" that the other Clans have mean they're more likely to listen to cats who come along and criticize the parts of their lifestyle that don't quite make sense. Unfortunately, Tree is the only one who's ever criticized with good intentions, and he went to SkyClan, not ShadowClan. The other three (Tigerstar, Sol, and Darktail) all had evil intentions, and they all went to ShC.

Half of it is a realistic downward spiral and cultural values that are hard to get out of, the other half is just the Erins needing a designated villain Clan even if it isn't logical. Examples of the first half would be Brokenstar's leadership and how it followed from Cedarstar and Raggedstar's and the rebellion in AVOS. Examples of the second half would be Nightstar and Cinderfur getting killed off and Tigerstar accepted just because the Erins wanted their main villain to be in ShadowClan, or the whole Clan except for ThunderClan-born Tawnypelt being fine with Blackstar making everyone atheist and getting rid of their mentorship system and such, even though for all their flaws they'd previously had no issue with StarClan and you would think at least some of them would revolt just hearing the idea.

It's because they were written that way.
And probably because they have a harsh territory and not good values, as some others have said.

They are written that way because we need a "bad people clan". Other than that they probably feel like the "bad guy" persona was given to them by the other clans and then they eventually embodied the characteristic.

It's such a shame because ShadowClan under Shadowstar's rule was truly awesome and set them up for a good future. They seemed to genuinely enjoy their territory as well as respect the other Clans. They weren't the sharp, irritable warriors we see now. They focus so much on brute strength now and days.
