I finished reading Mapleshade's novella a day or two ago, so I decided to make another thread on her.
First off, Patchkit and Perchpaw. They are adorable. Omg.
Anyway, so after getting through all the forbidden romance and murder...I'm perfectly neutral toward Mapleshade. I feel bad for her to a degree, a lot of the cats were pretty scummy towards her in this book. I mean, I would be surprised if she didn't snap. Mapleshade committed some heinous crimes (I really didn't appreciate how she took advantage of Birchface/Frecklewish) and definitely deserved the DF, but I still feel sort of conflicted since her victims weren't the best people either. One moment I feel they had it coming, but the next I feel they should've lived? As a whole, Mapleshade was pretty incompetent and should never have crossed the raging river with small kittens, or even had half-Clan babies. The situation could've easily been averted.
I know this book is kind of controversial in the fandom, what are your thoughts?

Ravenwing is the worst and if any other of the med cats we had known had been there they would have chewed him and oakstar out and not let the kits leave camp
frecklewish is like..the only one of mapleshades victims i feel bad for. Mapleshade lied and such and she didn't know how to swim
but everyone else in the book? h o r r i b le

I completely agree with a lot of things you said.
However, I said this before, many times, but I don't think that any of her victims were bad cats, they just did bad things.
Like, Appledusk cheated, which is bad, but he also died saving the lives of five cats.
Frecklewish was a good friend, and a great aunt to the kits, until she found out that they weren't actually Birchface's, but the kits of the guy who was responsible for his death.
Ravenwing is this young medicine cat who recently lost his mentor. Then, Rabbitfur started telling him stuff about Mapleshade's kits, and then, he go that sign from StarClan. I could be wrong, but I believe he spilled the secret, not only because he was angry that Mapleshade broke the code, but because he was afraid of StarClan's retaliation, they had to send him the omen for a reason right? Maybe he misinterpreted the omen, who knows?
Also, it's hard to get a handle on whether Ravenwing or any of the cats, were bad cats or not, because it's only told from one perspective.
I would really like to see a novella, or something, told from the perspectives of Mapleshade's victims during this time, it could shed a lot of light on all the controversies and stuff.
Moving on...
I absolutely adored Nettlepaw and Myler, they were def the best characters in that book.

Mmm I guess you could argue they aren't bad cats? Which is true, they're not villains, they're not Mapleshade. But they did do bad things that were morally gross. So obviously they won't go to the DF for their actions, but it doesn't mean they'll sit well with the readers. Which is why many feel conflicted over this novel I suppose. There's sin all over.
Appledusk cheated on two she-cats, didn't even ask his other kits names, and then threw Mapleshade under the bus to save his own hide.
Frecklewish called the kits "things", played ignorant to drowning kits, and then attacked Mapleshade while wishing she was dead, which ironically led to her own death.
Ravenwing stood by and did nothing while the clan persecuted a queen and her hits, he didn't suggest any other way to handle the situation either. He also knew his actions would put them in danger and he still did what he did.
However, it doesn't justify Mapleshade killing, at the same time people can't help but feel bad for her. Imo, I blame Oakstar most of all. For punishing innocent kits, and exiling them and also being bias in his judgment against Mapleshade as well. In fact, before the truth even came out he had planned to have the kits raised to avenge his son, he would have eventually wanted them to kill Appledusk, who ironically is their actual father. Oakstar is just awful.
