I read through DOTC before, and have recently finished the Super Edition attached to it, as well as the two novellas. Here are my thoughts on them:
Moth Flight's Vision: I liked this book quite a bit. I thought Moth Flight was a cute protagonist, I liked her ditzy nature and she gradually gained her mother's respect over the course of the book. Her relationship with Micah was nice. Speaking of Micah, his death was so sad. Clear Sky maaan.
I felt Clear Sky's character was strange in this one, since by the end of DOTC, he was a lot more humble and aware of his mistakes, but in MVS, he's back to his aggressive and spiteful Thunder Rising self. Anyway. I liked how they built up and introduced StarClan/the Moonstone and the leader ceremony. Moth Flight's kits were adorable, I think Blue Whisker is my favourite out of the four of them.
One of the only things I disliked about this SE is the medicine cat can't have mates thing being introduced. It felt kind of wrong to me how Moth Flight and StarClan made Acorn Fur give up her love for Red Claw, and how everyone else just sorta rolled with it and didn't have any objections. I mean, I get that they wanted to keep there duties and all, and I can see where Moth Flight's coming from, but just because she couldn't handle having a mate and kits, doesn't mean that the other medicine cats couldn't.
This was still a solid book, I'd give it an 8.5/10.
Thunderstar's Echo: Not much to say about this one. It was okay, but nothing really happened, except for Lightning Tail's death, which was a really nice send-off for him and ngl, I got a little emotional. Oh, and somehow this book made me like Thunderstar, even though I didn't care for him during DOTC. I didn't pay much attention to the ThunderViolet kits subplot, but I do headcanon that Lightning Stripe was Owlstar's deputy and became ThunderClan's third leader.
Had some nice moments, but overall there wasn't much to it. 6.5/10.
Shadowstar's Life: Now this, this book really irked me. What a mess. The allegiances were pretty botched. The book as a whole felt very hastily written and sloppy, which brought down the enjoyment for me. There was this very major contradiction (retcon?) where Gray Wing states he has no clue what will happen to ShadowClan after Shadowstar's death, but then at the end of the novella they look into a puddle and see events that happen many years into the future. Sun Shadow's death was a knock-off of Lightning Tail's.
The OG ShadowClan cats were shown to be kind and respectful in MVS, but in SsL, they are complete jerks, blatantly competing and fighting among themselves for a shot at being picked as deputy, even though Sun Shadow had just died. The book paid a huge disservice to Shadowstar herself. She had some very wise lines in DOTC, but the author dumbed down her dialogue and every other thought she had concerned amber eyes. She just wasn't interesting at all, which is disappointing since I loved her in DOTC.
My biggest issue with SsL is Quick Water. I mean why her as the villain? She's old, and she was insignificant past Thunder Rising. Again, she's just a clone of Willow Tail. And to be honest, Quick Water shouldn't even be in StarClan. Willow Tail I'm more lenient towards, but Quick Water deliberately led the dogs to ShadowClan territory and watched as they mauled and killed Sun Shadow and Shadowstar, and she even killed Shadowstar again later in the story after causing a four-Clan battle. I was baffled when she was forgiven the first time around by TC and SkC, especially since she had no proper alibi to explain where she was and what she was doing when she got caught attacking Shadowstar. I was even more confused when Shadowstar forgave Quick Water in StarClan for murdering her twice, and when Sun Shadow approached her cheerfully. She should've been sent to the Dark Forest.
Yea, definitely not a fan of this one. 2/10.
