Rainflower: Hailstar. I want to name my recently disfigured son Crookedkit as a reflection of his...appearance. Hailstar: But...why? Rainflower: Because...Because because. It's. Crooked. Now. His jaw. Is crooked. Hailstar: Well, there's nothing really in the code that says we HAVE to change cat's names when they're...you know. Rainflower: Well, there's nothing that says we can't either. So...could we? Hailstar: But why though? Rainflower: (Losing her patience) Because if I had known he was going to destroy his perfect little face I would never have named him Stormkit to begin with! What is so hard to understand about that?! Hailstar:... Rainflower:... Hailstar:...Have you talked to Shellheart about this? Rainflower: ... Hailstar: Have you talked to Stormkit about this? Rainflower:... Hailstar: Have you talked to anybody about this? Rainflower: .....I gotta go. (Leaves) Hailstar: Wow...that was weird.
That's how I imagine it would have gone in a slightly more realistic version. I hope I captured the general confusion and hesitation of what seemed a perfectly nice and reasonable leader to traumatize a recently disfigured kit even more then he already was. I mean...

You're right it does seem strange Maybe she black mailed him with something, or he just did it to shut her up, because he knew what a harpy she could be, or maybe he consulted with Heatherstar, who was probably like..
"I changed Hopkit's name to Deadpaw, and he loved it, I'm sure Stormkit will take pride in his new name too!"

I headcanon that in the Clans' culture it's a mother's right to name the first part of the kit's name, regardless of what she wants it to be, so even if Hailstar could technically (according to the warrior code) not let her do it, it might be a taboo to go against a mother's wishes in that way.
Honestly, I think it's worse that they kept him in the nursery for 12 moons.

I've always been bothered by that, like WHY did you agree to doing something like that??

And then he also gave Oakpaw to Shellheart as an apprentice because she told him to even though cats generally don't mentor their children. It always seemed like Hailstar was a total pushover who would just do anything Rainflower told him to.

I've never understood it. Why would anyone want another reminder of that horrible accident? It's almost on the same level of Heatherstar renaming Hopkit, but at least Meadowslip protested.
I guess naming cats after their injuries was just a "thing" back then.

That would explain why Echomist made an effort to avoid conflict with her over Crookedkit.

There will never be a good reason as to why they chose to give a heartbreaking name to him. It's all around disgusting.
I'm glad the Clans don't do this anymore in the newer books. It's cruel.
