Spoilers for The Broken Code below By problem, I mean his possessor, besides Ashfur, who do you think it could be?
Here's what we know about him so far...
1. He's a tom
2. He may or may not be from StarClan, I can see it was a Crookedstar/Mapleshade thing, where Shadowsight thought he was a StarClan cat, but he turned out not to be.
3. He mentioned to Squirrelflight, how she'd always stand up to him when they were younger. There could be two things about this, the first, is that he was alive during Squirrelflight's time, the other, is that he is just saying what he thinks Bramblestar would say.
4. He is obsessed with punishing cats for breaking the code.
5. He prioritizes the warriors over everyone else.
6. He probably died before Dewnose got his warrior name, since he couldn't even remember his name
That's all I can think of right now

I don't think that Fakestar really care about the warrior code, it's only a tool that he is using to create quarrels between the clans.

I want to say it's Darkstripe, that maybe he COMPLETELY lost his mind after Tigerstar was killed twice, but he never met Squirrelflight, and he doesn't seem to have the right capabilities to pull something like this off, he seems to be more of a lackey than anything.

Like I've been saying for awhile now, the possessor likely doesn't really care for the warrior code and is simply using it as a front by using Darkstar's law to his advantage. He's already broken it himself, after all, such as not letting the elders eat first. He clearly doesn't actually care.
He also tried to kill Sparkpelt via dogs, and it's for this reason why I still think it's Ashfur (at the very least, it's almost definitely someone who's been associated with Firestar and his family in the past).

I finished the book, now I have more clues.
Whoever the bad guys are (I honestly believe there's more than one) at least one of them has a serious grudge against ShadowClan, I think.
Here are some new suspects I thought of
1. Darktail - ShadowClan rejected him, even when he brought them prey, they still rejected him. He's this angry guy with abandonment issues, and he knows about clan life.
2. Shrewclaw - I know this guy died like a thousand years ago, and he hasn't appeared in any of the main series, and it's doubtful that anyone even remembers his existence, but he died with hate in his heart, hate directed at ShadowClan.
3. Sleekwhisker - she could possibly be dead, and be part of the evil ghost crew.
4. Breezepelt - the current Breezepelt is clearly an impostor, he's way too nice! (this one is a joke)

I can't imagine the possessor being anyone but Trashfur. Possessor has an OBSESSION with Squirrelflight and her family. There is only one character who has it out for her.

However, I doubt understand why he would be causing issues for basically everyone. His beef has always been with Squirrelflight, and Squirrelflight only. Ashfur may have been a psychopath with messed up morals, but I doubt he'd let the elders suffer, especially considering that one of those elders was his foster brother. I also doubt that he'd use Tigerclaw's way of killing his mother, to try and kill another cat. I could be giving him too much credit though, but I don't, I just don't get Ashfur vibes from him.

i think ashfur has pretty much surpassed the point of caring about morals and all that. if it is ashfur, he's clearly been marinating in his anger for a while up in starclan before taking action; i just think that now that his plans are in action, he doesnt care about who gets hurt in the process. he feels like he's been wronged.
but ashfur alone isn't an evil supervillain. i definitely think there's someone guiding him and helping him get to where he needs to be. possibly an accomplice, but i think that ashfur is the accomplice in this situation. kind of like how he was with hawkfrost.

Yeah, that's what I think too, I think he could be involved, but he's DEF not the ring-leader. I'm going with Mapleshade as the ring-leader, because she likes to stick her nose in everyone's stuff. At first, it was just Appledusk's family line, but she went after Tigerclaw too for some reason, and he's not even related to AD.

He's been stewing in Starclan for years. He didn't try to use Tigerclaw's way of killing his mom on just anyone - he tried to use it on Squirrelflight's daughter. Which he is DEFINITELY not above doing considering he was willing to let the three burn alive. Besides, he's likely working with someone because he's easily manipulated and is happy to help others in their evil if it helps him with his goal of screwing things up for Squirrelflight (dude has issues)

He doesn't seem smart enough to come up with these plans on his own though, isn't he more of an opportunist than a planner? Wasn't Hawkfrost the one who came up with the fox trap plan for Firestar? And I doubt Ashfur started the fire, it was just a natural thing, that he used to his advantage. But maybe he did get more intelligent and vindictive in StarClan, who knows?

I want to believe the erins will do something that will blindside us all and be awesome, but we've all seen how the books have gone...

I don't think it's that they're not clever, I just think that they've written soo many books, and have had sooo many characters, that it's hard to keep track of everything.

Ashfur or Darktail. Ashfur IS in StarClan by 2 votes, so it's more likely Darktail.

I'm late to the party, but here's my take:
Ashfur is in the body right now. He's controlling Bramblestar's body. I say this because of Brashstar's obsession/love for Squirrelflight, hatred for Lionblaze, Jayfeather, Alderheart and Sparkpelt, and lots of other reasons. We cannot pass off that Brashstar tried to use dogs to kill Sparkpelt, which is exactly how his mother was killed. This does not mean the impostor is Tigerstar (come on, guys). Ashfur is just evil now.
Sol is alive, and hiding somewhere. He helped Ashfur come up with this scheme. I say this because using the cats' biggest weakness, the Code, as a way to divide them and bring out their insecurities and distrust of each other, is a totally Sol thing to do. Ashfur has never shown anything close to this level of cunning. Ashfur is just an angry and emotional dude who became Evil after having to watch Bramblestar and Squirrelflight hitting it off for two arcs.
A new character we've never seen before who is the enabler. He/she has wanted to destroy the Clans for a long, long time but has never really found the right candidate for the job. Ashfur found him/her somehow and volunteered himself to infiltrate ThunderClan and start dividing everybody. This new character has powers at about the same level as Rock and Midnight, but unlike them, he/she is Evil!

I'd like to see all the Dark Forest trainees or all of the cats who 'didn't have a chance' and felt angry about their short / meaningless lives to be the ones behind this entire mess.

So, I thought about something What if the possessor doesn't have a problem with ShadowClan after all? What if they're just going after ShadowClan, to scare Shadowsight into spilling the beans about the code-breakers?

i haven’t seen this mentioned yet but another clue that it could be ashfur was the fact that fake bramble had no idea who the sisters were yet knew that squirrelflight spent time in starclan. clearly the clan didn’t talk much about the sister era so you’d think squirrelflight spending time in starclan wouldn’t have been mentioned either. ashfur saw squirrelflight in starclan so he knew she spent time there.

i read a theory on facebook that someone thought maybe after the Great Battle with firestar vs dark forest , there was fragments of the dark forest cats and formed one mega evil cat. i think its that AND ashfur. The only problem is that it sounds totally fictional, super bad, even for the Dark Forest. I don't think that conspiracy theories are gonna work, badgerfang.

Nah, it's totally Ashfur betraying Starclan. Once I had a dream where I was visiting Silverstream with Graystripe. I asked her 'Are you really going to do that to those cats' in relation to the Broken Code. She said 'I don't know' which is temporarily reassuring. But still, Squirrelflight loved Ashfur for a moment before her paws set on a different path, with Brambleclaw. I could see how Shadowsight would see Ashfur as 'nice' and mistake him for 'Nice Ashfur'. Ashfur would want to kill Bramblestar, duh, and his kits, but he wouldn't dare harm a Medicine Cat. He threw out Squirrelflight, maybe to spite her, and gave harsh punishments to the Clan. I'm surprised that StarClan even thinks it's 'ok'! So, it's Ashfur because he STILL wants to harm Squirrelflight. But, maybe StarClan IS bad... To support this, I have the Moonpool. It's unaccessible, so StarClan obviously feels guilty. Or just doesn't want to commune at all! This is obviously going nowhere, so I'm just stopping this train of thought. While I can. :3
