WARNING: this thread is an absolute disjointed mess and just where i'm gathering my collection of ideas for right now before i lose them.
We have the usual, Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Every cat has their own element that's naturally born in them.
Occasionally rare powers will surface from children whose parents have 2 different elements. But MOST of the time kits will take on the powers of only one parent.
Water/Fire have the ability to raise or decrease temperature of water at will and as such can make ice or boiling water to fling at enemies. (Normal water cats can manipulate things MADE out of water such as rain or humidity but can't control the temperature of it. The only way a regular water cat could use ice is during the winter.)
Air/Fire can have the ability to generate or manipulate electricity. Extremely skilled electricity users have been fabled to even being able to fly by polarizing themselves and levitating. (This is rarely, if ever done.)
Earth/Fire Have the ability to raise and decrease temperature of the earth much like water/fire cats can but can use it to terraform the land completely or even to create rudimentary tools out of the ground by smelting it.
Earth/Water cats have a natural healing and regenerative ability that makes them formidable in battle and as healers, able to knit together wounds almost instantly. They also have a knack for growing plants and being in tune with nature more than anyone. This is one of the more commonly seen rare hybrids as earth and water cats are known for getting along well.
Earth/Air cats are one of the rarest power hybrids of all, not much is known of their abilities aside from being a truly terrifying force. Most earth/air cats have been inclined towards forces of evil or have gone entirely mad. They seem to only have the abilities of both air and earth rather than some combination-power like the others.
Air/Water are known for their mastery of the sky. They have a natural resistance to disease. They are fast and terrifying hunters and swimmers, being able to walk or run on the surface of water or stir up terrifying storms both around them and in the sky.
There is an emphasis on bloodlines and heirarchy. Though some cat's dismiss that. I was hoping that could be one of our first major plot points is having some tension between the old generation of cats who focus on "purity" within the ranks and young spunky halfbloods who want to prove themselves trope.
There is also a kind of "marriage" between cats that happens. Marrying outside of your element has never been forbidden nor has having kits. However having kittens out of wedlock can result in the whole family being treated like dirt. Although weddings between earth and air cats is ESPRESSLY forbidden because (almost) every earth/air combo power cat there has ever been has gone mad and/or evil and been exiled as a result of it because those two powers just don't blend like the rest.
Think of the elemental cats powers of being on a level spectrum.
Earth -- Water -- Fire -- Air
The two elements on the left side represent the actual physical manipulation of what already exists, while the two on the right are a manipulation of more of a thought and an idea. As well as that, the outer elements represent what is transfixed, while the inner two are mutable elements that can flow in nearly any direction.
The combination of earth and air are at odds on two accounts, and as a result, their genetics don't know what to make of it. Instead of a true combination power the cat literally just has Earth AND Air.
So instead of four clans, theres more like just one big society with four different subcultures, one for each usual element.
Fire cats have a habit of being artistic and cook and spice their prey for flavor with their powers. They can tend to be a little on the chubby side because of their love of food.
Earth cats can change the terrain and help things grow, so most of them are builders or farmers. Some also have zen rock gardens and such and are pretty introspective.
Water cats can bring good weather. They don't eat fish or amphibians and might even keep them as pets. Theyre known for being a little weird and often get manic about cleaning and decorating.
Air cats are muses of music and stories. Their powers arent known for being strong, but some are capable of flight. They carve gourds or wood with their claws to make flutes or ocarinas to charm birds or snakes and keep oral traditions alive.
Their society is heavily based on what lineage one has. Purebloods can tend to be cocky about it or gain staus easier, but mixed powers also happen. Cat marriage is also a thing. They have no rule on who cant marry though (although earth and air cats are forbidden to have kittens. more on that later) If a kitten is born out of wedlock, some might have bias though and treat them poorly.
Every cat has a power! Most of them are mono-powered though. So you can only have fire, water, earth, or air. However rarely, and I emphasize RARELY a cat with parents of two different powers can have a combination power of both. Though most kittens even from parents with two different elemental types have a power of only one of the parents.
So EX: A male water cat and a female fire cat have kittens. 1 out of every 10 kittens can be a fire/water cat. And most cats have litters of an average of 2-4 kittens, so it's pretty likely only one kit or none of them will have it.
