it's so weird being bilingual because like my first language is english but i am also fluent in spanish and when i woke up from a nap a few minutes ago i just automatically thought 'quiero comida' instead of 'i want food' like ??????? ? why ??? it's so strange

it's the weirdest thing i swear. i'm swedish/english bilingual and i honestly can't tell which language i/my subconscious prefer anymore.
it gets really weird when you start thinking in the third language you're forcing yourself to learn though, like?? french, why are you in my head now?? and commenting on that woman's trousers of all things? i'm not even conversational yet get out

i was lucky enough to grow up with it and move abroad to the uk as a young child, so both languages are really close to my heart. still can't decide which is easier for me to use though.
if you ever want to practice your swedish i'd be happy to help you do that in the form of written conversation. might be fun, you never know

Tack mycket! ^^
I grew up in proud Swedish home in America. My mom is half Swedish and still carries on quite a few traditions especially around Christmas time. My ancestors went to New Sweden, Maine and worked as translators.

varsågod, att använda svenskan blir roligt.
ah, alright. that's really interesting, i think. i know a lot of my great-grandparents relatives moved to america back when the huge surge of swedes crossed over, so i have quite a few distant relatives over there. not that i know them at all, i just know that they exist, i don't even know any of their names, we're too distantly related for that. still, i think it's kinda cool to know that i do have relatives out there in the world.

My uncle is constantly trying to discover who were related to in the area, and so far...so many people. It is crazy

It can be. Sometimes it's really weird though, especially if I knew them before realizing that we were related

yeah, i guess so. how do you bring that up? hey, so, we're like third cousins once removed waddup? i have a pretty big family myself, but we all stay in touch so i would know if i was related to anyone. i'm grateful for massive family gatherings, honestly.

hello! i speak no swedish, unfortunately (it's a v interesting language), but i'm semi fluent in spanish, and i know what you mean. i think it's the coolest thing when i dream in spanish though, and then sometimes i'll just start speaking spanglish? like, i'll be at a friend's house, and someone will like pass me the salt at dinner or something, and i'll say gracias instead of thanks, and i genuinely don't mean to? i'm white, so no one else in my house speaks it, but i do try to keep myself from forgetting it when i'm not in school by speaking it anyways, so maybe that's why. it's weird.

yeah, dreaming in another language is so amazing! i always feel great when i wake up after a foreign language dream (i don't have them much anymore though, i miss properly learning a language). i think it's because i feel so accomplished, since i must know it pretty well if i'm able to dream in it. i think that's good though? you'll hold onto the language for longer that way.
same though. my spanish is limited to a few song lyrics that i can't pronounce or make sense of.

"I'm fluent in this." "I'm semi-fluent in this."
Me: I watched a 4-minute Elmo short in my target language and understood about 50% of it.
Now I feel bad. I want to dream in it so badly. I want to understand it. Speak it well. I've been studying for a year and don't have much to show for it.

I've been taking Latin for 9 years now. Sometimes when I can't figure out the English word for something, my brain fills it in the gap with the Latin equivalent. Like once I couldn't remember the word "lieutenant" so I said "legatus" instead.
I also call my parents mater and pater.
On top of Latin, now I'm learning Italian as well as the Russian alphabet. Later down the line I wish to learn Spanish, German, Russian, French, and Irish.

One time I forgot the word "wait" in English One time I thought in my head while looking for a book in the language I'm learning, "Oh, it's in *word for English*."
Let's break that down: "Oh, it's in-" thought in English "*word for English*" not thought in English.
Actual: "Oh, it's in 英語."
